35 Buildings That Got Repurposed For Something Their Architects Probably Didn’t Even Dream Of (New Pics)
While my renovation means getting a new rug from Ikea, changing a lightbulb that’s been out of order for the past year (or five, if I’m being totally honest), and keeping my succulents alive, some people turn it into an art form.
Welcome to the inspiring collection of renovations that deserve their own place in history compiled by Bored Panda. From the abandoned church that’s been remade into a skater’s dream park to a defunct subway entrance that’s been cleverly turned into an actual entry to the Subway eatery, and it only gets better.

Moved Here 4 Years Ago. Converted Victorian Church In England. Love This Room
Not uncommon in the UK. A friend rented a converted church like this, it had a mezzanine which was the 'bedroom'. I thought it was all wonderful.
What a blessing it would be to live in this environment... So serene, thought-provoking and inspirational ~
Wait, what? Why? How? ... I cannot fathom this, how could this happen at all? :D
Stone Observatory Tower Converted To A Home
The Building Used For The Swimming Events At The 2008 Summer Olympics In Beijing Was Transformed Into This Dope-Looking Waterpark
Errr... weren't they all designed for their next use? Like the athlete's village is each time a new neighourhood etc.
A good thing, too. Too many Olympic venues just sit and rot, because the communities don't have a use for them.
Load More Replies...It was built for swimming and is now being used for swimming? I bet the architect never saw it coming, lol!
I promise the architects were thrilled- it's a perfect use for a building with multiple olympic-sized swimming pools. They MAY have suggested this future use. (Also, this structural system was a big deal at the time.)
When we think of architecture, we start picturing an entire complex process that gets to make a building from zero. But very often, architects work with what they’re already given, whether it’s defunct objects or abandoned buildings, and they have to work their way around them to give these ghosts an entirely new meaning and purpose.
Repurposed buildings also have power to revitalize communities. It often happens when industrial structures like old factories are remodeled into community centers—sites of leisure.
In Germany There Is Waterpark Called Tropical Islands. It's A Literal Tropical Island Built Inside An Old Blimp Hangar
I've been there a few years ago and basically it's lovely. But you have this grey dome above you (at least in winter, I think in Summer they can open it a bit) and this made me a bit depressed after some time.
Nope, you're right, it is literally not a tropical island.

According to Kaelan Burkett, an author at Architizer, “repurposed buildings are not simply reincarnations of their former selves; an arts center does not have the same relationship to a community as a factory.”
“But these projects do not act as replacements or departures from what preceded them, either. When architecture is successfully repurposed, it does not hide its history, but instead becomes a relic, projecting its identity into a new age, and embodying the contradictory qualities of tradition and innovation, of preservation and progress.”
Vienna Gasometers: Gas Storage Tanks First Built In 1896 And Converted Into Mixed-Use Developments Between 1995 And 2001
Yeah. And 35 years ago when it was compeltely empty, we had wild raves and clubings in one of the towers. The ground is konkav and when you had too much fun, you rolled down that indoor-hill to the wall. It was a magical location.
Load More Replies...And that's how they look like when left to rot. IMGP5889-6...67dab6.jpg
Are they not structurally robust? How long does it take for them to decay like this?
Load More Replies...the name of the building is "ant & eagle" (I don't know why) and it is a home for students.
Load More Replies...They should just be called "gas storage" as "-ometer" implies that they measure something which they don't. The name "gasometer", coined by the original inventor, stuck even though its misleading in the scientific world.
when they were gas tanks, they were totaly empty. inside was just a gigantic black ballon, that was filled with gas during the night, so the ballon filled the building and all windows were dark. during daytime the gas went to the users and the ballon got smaller. so you could see light through the windows and everybody knew, how big the ballon still was and how much gas was left. so: gas tank is displaying how much is inside = gasometer ... sorry for bad english! :-D

Niccolò Paganini Auditorium, Parma, Italy, An Abandoned Sugar Factory Converted Into A Concert Hall By Renzo Piano In 1996
I love Renzo Piano's. buildings. We have one here in Sydney and although it's not one of his more inventive designs, it's still beautiful. The Piano wing of the Pierpont Morgan library is really beautiful.
Great and cost effective, but... very unattractive from the outside, sorry.
This Abandoned Church Was Purchased By Skaters And Renovated Into A Dream Park
Oh they've put all the art on plywood instead of painting directly on the church, that's very thoughtful
But how did it work with church acoustic? It must be deafening.
That reminds me so much of that Tony Hawk game where you can skate inside the Sagrada Familia
Kaelan also claims that repurposing architecture is not a new concept. For example, “The Hagia Sophia has been rebuilt, redesigned and redecorated many times in its lives as a church, mosque and museum. Similarly, the Kremlin has housed many regimes since its 14th-century construction, and undergone a corresponding evolution of forms.” In such cases, the changing roles of architecture often reflect or enforce political ideologies and claims to power.

McDonald's In The Art Deco Former "United Kingdom Hotel", Clifton Hill, Melbourne, Australia
This isn't sad. If the building can't be repurposed into something commercially viable, it gets demolished and we lose that historic building. This is how preservation works, its how we save historic fabric.
Ooo, this is really pretty. Nice one to save the building instead of tearing it down to build an ugly new one.
We had a McDonald's that used to be a bank for several years but sadly they tore it down and rebuilt it.
The sign on top is a bit of an insult to the incredibly beautiful lines of the building. I'm surprised they were allowed to do that.

That overhanging concrete isn't support from underneath anymore so whats holding it in place?
It's not concrete. It's a plaster veneer that was always suspended from above. Theaters often look quite solid, but their internal structure is theater itself. The ceiling hangs from the actual structural roof above. The walls were merely self-supporting 'curtains' within the overall building.

This Hotel's Breakfast Lounge Is Inside An Old Bank Vault
The office I work in was originally a bank built in 1865 we still have the old vault etc we also have a f**k ton of draughts in the winter noisy leaky pipes dodgy electrics (probably still the original wires) no fire exit etc and as it's a grade 2 listed building it's a major pain to have any work done, so yeah working in a really old repurposed building isn't always pretty and fun
That's just bad maintenance. My office was built in the 1660s, and my house was built about 1600, and both are very comfortable. There's nothing about a building being legally protected by listing that means it cannot be updated, changed and made comfortable for modern living.

What is a “Thrift store “ is it a store/ shop for charity .
Just a place where you can buy used items(clothing, furniture, etc) for low prices. They are usually backed by a charity.
Load More Replies...This is not a good thing. There is definitely a correlation for businesses failing and the rise of charity stores in towns and cities that are in economic decline. This should not be celebrated as a positive repurposing as it is just sad

These transformations get less uplifting and more depressing as one scrolls down.
In my city (which is super big on local history and was settled in the mid-1600's), there's an old Citizens National Bank that was built in 1877. It's such a cool building, inside and outside.
