Think of it as herd immunity: the population is protected from a disease (a fake narrative) after vaccination (a response) by stopping the germ responsible for the infection being transmitted between people (destroying that absurd fantasy with facts).

I've lost a family member from polio contracted from receiving the vaccine. HOWEVER, even she believed everyone should be vaccinated and understood she was a rare case. She passed in her mid 40's and never once spewed the anti-vax messages these idiots do.
My mother grew up Before Polio Vaccine. I was (I think) about 18 months when it became available. She burned rubber to get me to the doctor because, as she assured me, not having it was worse than the possibility of any side effects. Your family member was a smart cookie.

I’d also call them out on their bs that 1) doctors don’t have the knowledge or time to learn about vaccines (though I’ll admit some doctors don’t know) and that 2) parents generally have the knowledge and time to do research on vaccines when their doctors supposedly cannot.
Doctors spend around 8-10 years learning this, AFTER high school, and they can't become an official doc until they absolutely CANNOT screw this up. Also, (from what I've been told, may be wrong) the viruses or bacteria used to make vaccines are dead or subdued, so you can't get the disease from the vaccine.
Believe me when I say doctors can most definitely screw stuff like that up, but the anti-vaxxer is still full of bs. Most vaccines use dead viruses or bacteria... or even just parts of the virus or bacteria (antigens, the parts that trigger an immune response), but some use attenuated viruses or bacteria, and those can lead to mild cases of that disease.

Vaccine-induced polio can cause temporary paralysis, so the anti-vaxxer may be telling the truth there. It happens in places where they use the oral (live) polio vaccine instead of the injected (dead) polio vaccine. Having said that, vaccines save millions of lives and most antivaxxer arguments are nonsense.
My mother in law did have polio at the age of 29, BEFORE the vaccine existed. She spent 7 months in an iron lung in the hospital in Sacramento and her sons had to "visit" her from the lawn outside the building as children weren't allowed inside the ward. She had to use a mirror above her head to see them. She did recover and walked with a limp the rest of her life. These abhorrent antivaxx fanatics should be forced to spend a week in an iron lung to understand the ramifications of their choices.
It's a pity we can't find a way to paralyze them for a week or 2, so they can enjoy the benefits of the unvaccinated.
