“Dog-Friendly, Child-Free” Pub That’s Been Banning Kids For 11 Years Sparks Heated Debate
With only four words, a British pub made millions of enemies, attracted new customers, and started a conversation on (un)acceptable family outings.
On April 14, X user @ItsThatEm posed next to a sign that caught his eye while walking in Fishpool Street, St Albans, Hertfordshire, East of England.
Located outside of Lower Red Lion pub, the chalkboard read “Dog-friendly—Child-free.”

In the following hours, the post reached millions of users’ screens. As of today (April 22), the picture of the controversial sign was seen by 75 million people.

“I was surprised it went quite as far as it did,” admitted landlord David Worcester, who runs the Lower Red Lion pub.
“I have no objection to children in any other pub, ever; I just don’t want them in mine.
“I enjoy a game of pool but I don’t want a pool table in here, either.”
As he told presenter Jonathan Vernon-Smith, the pub’s policy has existed for “about 11 years,” as per the BBC.
Worcester decided to place that sign outside following complaints from parents who stated they were only informed about the rule after entering the establishment with their little ones.
For Worcester, the presence of children disrupts the stress-free atmosphere he wants to create for customers in the pub.
“I just want to create an environment where my customers can sit and relax; it only takes one child to kick off, and that spoils it for absolutely everybody.
“We’ve got upwards of 40 pubs in St Albans, all of which are child friendly, and most are dog friendly. I believe I’m the only one in the area that isn’t.”
The sign reminded customers that their furry friends were more than welcome inside, but children would have to wait a few years before they could enter the pub

Despite this, the sign sparked outrage among many social media users, who argued that no bar should enforce child-free policies.
As some people pointed out, parents don’t want to give up the activities they enjoyed before having children, and sometimes, they cannot hire a babysitter or nanny.
“It’s getting harder and harder to go on a holiday these days as more accommodation places are banning kids. I don’t think it should be allowed, but at the end of the day, if they don’t want or need our business, then that’s fine. I will spend my money where it’s appreciated,” a critic penned.
“Dog people are making me hate dogs,” somebody else wrote, while another sarcastically added, “But dogs barking and sniffing all up on people and peeing in the middle of a place with food is perfectly acceptable.”

On the other hand, some showed full support for the pub’s policy, citing children’s unpredictable and sometimes uncontrollable behavior as justifications for barring them from entering the establishment.
“I’m all for this! Nothing worse than trying to have a quiet drink or a meal even at a restaurant with friends and some child/children kicking off, running around, etc, and the parents doing nothing about it,” a separate person said.
Another parent expressed their approval of the idea, writing, “I have kids and I get it…. People deserve to go out without kids screaming their heads off.”
Others maintained that pubs aren’t suitable environments for children, therefore making the ban necessary. “As someone who spent way too many hours in pubs when I was a child watching drunken brawls, people cheating with other patrons’ wives, this is only a good thing…” an X user shared.
As a picture of the sign went viral, people quickly jumped to the comments to voice their opinions regarding the pub’s child-free policy

Meanwhile, many drew parallels between this case and other child-free private spaces, such as adults-only hotels.
“It’s a choice. There are child-free hotels, too. If the landlord can make a living this way, he should be able to make this an option for his business. Seems there are a lot of other pubs nearby as child-friendly alternatives, which is an important point.”
This isn’t the first time that a restaurant or pub has tried to avoid meltdowns from their youngest customers. In March, a restaurant in New York took a different approach by rewarding parents of “well-behaved” kids with a discount.
Additionally, some cruise lines, like Virgin Voyages, offer adults-only experiences for those who don’t wish to sail the seven seas with children.

We don't hate the kids. We simply have very little regard for 'parents' who are raising wild animals in the form of kids.
Spot on John, there is a huge problem with parents not parenting anymore. My nieces and nephews are awesome little people because their parents raised them right. I'd happily watch all 10 of them and not bat an eye. Its the little sociopaths in training that you see running around that ruin things for the good kids.

Pubs are where adults go to get drunk and behave like children. No problem with this policy as I don’t want to go out drinking where I have to moderate my language or topics of conversation. To put it another way, a pub is a place where adults go to take a highly dangerous and intoxicating d**g. It is not a place for kids - especially in the evening.
Depends on whether you're talking about the bar or the restaurant attached to the pub. Most pubs (here at least) have restaurants that are family friendly. Kids aren't welcome in the "adult only areas" though - at the bar or at the poker (slot) machines.

I have a child, I like child free places, my partner has dogs, we like dog friendly places. If you think a child free, dog friendly place is a problem then there’s a really simple answer, don’t go there.

I thought by definition that pubs would be child free? The name alone implies that I'm going to an adult oriented place and do not expect children. To the people going waaaaah, there's literally hundreds of businesses that allow kids, some of us want to go out somewhere and not deal with loud kids, we do deserve that option.

There are plenty of restaurants that are tailored towards kids, Chucky Cheeze etc.. and there are MANY where kids are allowed. Why can’t there be ones tailored specifically for adults?

Not my business so it's none of my business how the owner chooses to run it. You have a choice to spend your money there or to not do so. I'm sure there will be enough customers grateful for a child free environment to support this business so just go somewhere else if you don't like it. If someone gives you a boundary that you find unacceptable then turn around and go the other way. You are not entitled to trespass over the boundaries that others have set for themselves in their rightfully owned spaces. Many entertainment venues have age limits. Amusement parks have height requirements for some of their rides. Movies have age limits according to rating. It is not a big deal. Before anyone adds that there are discriminatory practices that would be illegal know that I am aware but I also know this is not one of them.
I remember a whole debate here about smoking in bars. Government wanted to ban it and people said "if there was a market for smoking free bars, there would be some". And then when a certain bar banned smoking, there was an outrage, just like this. In this case 1 pub out of 40 doesn't welcome children, so you go somewhere else when you want to bring your child. People who want to go out without children present, also have the right to have a place like that!

I've been to a number of pubs in The UK recently and most were both kids and dogs friendly... The children were definitely more noticeable than the dogs which were all well behaved and sitting/lying near their owners. To be honest the kids were also no bother...
Parents like that annoy me. It is one single pub out of hundreds that's not for you. OMG get over it and go somewhere else. When I was younger it was completely normal that you do not bring small children to a pub. They do not need to be there and miss out on nothing. And the parents can either go somewhere else or get a sitter if it has this one special pub.

I used to live in New Orleans. The city is about 85% Catholic. I went to many bar/restaurants where their ‘be fruitful and multiply pro-creations’ run amok. One time a kid somehow crawled and got stuck inside the ‘claw machine’ (it’s a coin operated machine filled with toys where you move this claw like thing to scoop up a toy usually to no avail). Fire department came, the parents were too busy to watch them. I personally don’t think small children need to be in bars

I'm a boy-mom of 3 and I can say when my husband/I have our rare Date Night we don't want to be seated by children. It's for the simple fact we have kids and if we wanted them there it wouldn't be a Date Night. No stress, no mom mom mom, interruptions we just focus on each other for a change. When we do take our sons out we have them make sure they respect others space and don't argue or bicker or be loud interrupting other peoples good time. People don't pay money to have their dinner, movie, etc ruined. We don't helicopter parent but we also don't free range parent letting them run amuk. We know not everyone wants to say/wave Hi a million times to our children. Let people enjoy their time and I agree there's places that could be child free. We don't mind it is what it is.

Mom here. I am so confused. I haven't been to a lot of bars, but I've never seen kids of any age at any of the ones I've been to. I can't imagine kids being louder than the music or the drunk adults (I can barely hear myself talk in those places), but I also can't imagine bringing kids there. It's just not a kid environment. A bar and grill (like Chili's) makes sense, but a regular bar/pub? I guess this is just a debate I never expected to see.
While child free places are perfectly fine, dogs in an indoor eating establishment seems like a bad idea. They're a tripping hazard, potential health hazard, and there are plenty of people with allergies.

I don't think the real problem is the kids. The problem is more about the a*s hole parents that are raising them.
Mom here. I am so confused. I haven't been to a lot of bars, but I've never seen kids of any age at any of the ones I've been to. I can't imagine kids being louder than the music or the drunk adults (I can barely hear myself talk in those places), but I also can't imagine bringing kids there. It's just not a kid environment. A bar and grill (like Chili's) makes sense, but a regular bar/pub? I guess this is just a debate I never expected to see.
While child free places are perfectly fine, dogs in an indoor eating establishment seems like a bad idea. They're a tripping hazard, potential health hazard, and there are plenty of people with allergies.
No one is saying you have to have a dog to go there, or even that it is encouraged, just that they are allowed. They aren't allowed to meander about or misbehave. Unlike the children who infest most pubs these days, who become everyone's problem as the parents basically give up all responsibility. My mate has a kid. I hate going to a child friendly pub so I don't bother going with him. Adult only pubs for me. I want to relax.
