Switzerland.
Con: high cost of living.
Pro: the flag is a big plus.
Not even a high cost of living because the wages are even higher. Life is two or three times more expensive than in France, Germany or Uk in absolute, but cheaper relatively. The legal minimum wage (purely indicative, there isn’t a single person who doesn’t earn more) is around 26 eur/usd per hour. That means the lowest wages at any company (cleaning or warehouse staff) are around 5000 eur/usd a month.
I live in Switzerland and think that high cost of living is a justified con. With everything getter ever more expensive, more and more Swiss people are struggling to pay their bills - particularly health insurance (which is obligatory) and taxes are quite high. My personal pro would be the dense network of public transportation.
Load More Replies...Sadly yes. I'm swiss, my fiance is Latino, my family was horrified
Load More Replies...Took me longer than it probably should have to figure it out. Very punny.
United Kingdom.
Pro: Beautiful countryside that generally has public access.
Con: Run by a bunch of corrupt and useless tw*ts.
anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job" -Douglas Adams
Load More Replies...I wholeheartedly agree with this. There’s some absolutely brilliant historical sites and stunning views. However, Brexit is seeing a rise in nationalism.
Yeah. I never realised Stella Braverman was Enoch Powell re-incarnated.
Load More Replies...18th on the Corruption Perception Index, for those who have never lived in a really corrupt country
That's probably because our systems aren't especially corrupt, whereas our ruling party absolutely is. You won't get far bribing most British cops, but bribe a Tory and you're quids in.
Load More Replies...That's not just the UK, practically everywhere is run by a bunch of asholes.
Well, it is and it isn't. It's sort of one country that's composed of four countries, at least one and possibly three of which aren't actually countries. The outlier is Northern Ireland, by the way, which is definitely a country by any metric.

Australia.
Pro: No guns and free healthcare.
Cons: everything wants to kill you and the sun gives you cancer.
Australia: pros - the animals are so cool, and seeing a kangaroo on my driveway is cool. Cons - it takes a bit to learn what is not going to kill you and the biggest spiders are the least dangerous… most of the time
Load More Replies...Pro: well-run. Con: unless you are first nations australian and can't even get a VOICE.
First nations people have the same voice as all other Australians. Just don't have a constitutionally enshrined special lobby group that no-one else does. If the referendum was just about constitutional recognition, it would have easily passed. The 'Voice' can still be legislated into law.
Load More Replies...Australia has so many pros- rich and beautiful First Nations culture, amazing scenery, diverse landscapes, beautiful beaches, great weather, chilled lifestyle, great food, multicultural population, healthcare, good coffee….Cons: First Nations people do not get the respect they deserve, selfish drivers, the outback can kill the unprepared, long distances between things, rip tides, and bitey stingy things. Most of these things can be overcome with a little education and common sense.
It takes as long to get to Australia as it does to fly to the Moon.
Load More Replies...Today I learned that there has been no spider related death in Australia since 1979 https://australian.museum/learn/animals/spiders/spider-facts/
More people in Japan have been killed by spiders, than in Australia in the last 40 years. Redbacks have hitch-hikied a ride to Japan in shopping containers.. people see a black spider with a red lightning bolt, and touch it. Fun fact about redback venom...you have to do gentle exercises, walking, to work it out of your system...but if ever bitten, get to the hospital regardless
Load More Replies...The flies are probably worse than all other Australian animals combined. But only in Alice Springs and other desert areas. They've mostly been controlled now that we've introduced dung beetles.
Load More Replies...Pro: Don't need to waste money on military. They just send a box of wildlife to their enemies.
Beware the drop bears, hoop snakes and bunyips.

Ukraine.
Pro: great food.
Con: located close to Russia.
Still doesn't make the Russian invasion right, though.
Load More Replies...Ukrainian here. Can confirm, pelmeni and borsch are amazing. Though we are run by a gullible ex-clown
Norway.
Pro: incredibly beautiful and clean nature.
Con: the weather is often so bad you need to stay indoors.
The real con is the months of basically complete darkness imo. That's so much worse than bad weather.
I can take the long winter night ( when in netherlands). There is lighting. ( So many beautiful lamps, lights ) Its the long days. S**t the eff up birds. Its 3:45 am and i need more sleep. Summer meant blindfolds and earplugs.
Load More Replies...Norway's gonna be homing a lot of introverts after this. Save me a room, please.
Come to Almería (Spain) and enjoy of the sun even night
Finland.
Pro: people avoid you.
Con: that's kinda lonely.
I really like Finnish people. Everyone I've worked with/befriended is straightforward in their communication and has a dark sense of humor 😄. Also Sisu!
Pro: moomins, sauna, nature, nature everywhere, salmiakki, you can drink water from every sink, heesburger, more nature, LONKERO Con: cold
I lived for a long time in the UP of Michigan. Hancock has a sister city in Finland. Finlanders are people of few words but can be incredibly generous and caring.
Good luck with that. Our language is very difficult to learn.

Canada.
Pro: free healthcare.
Con: it takes so long to get that you might die waiting for it.
Same in Mexico. There is free healthcare, doctors are well trained and the attention is good, but it is so understaffed, bureaucracy-ridden and slow that most who can afford it just go for private care.
For all the BP about free healthcare in Canada, it turns out that Canada has a two-tier healthcare system: Top-notch, old-fashioned-American-style employer-paid for 30% or self-paid healthcare, with a terrible but free government healthcare fallback for the other 70%. Federal government healthcare excludes prescriptions, mental healthcare unless from a medical doctor, physical therapy except following hospitalization, occupational therapy, extended care or dental. Provincial governments may include some of these.
Load More Replies...It’s not free. It’s funded with our taxes. Too little funding and completely mismanaged by a bunch of stupid, corrupt and completely don’t give a $h!+ if you die politicians. Access to it is next to impossible and when you do the wait for tests to be done is, unfortunately, not laughable because it’s not funny. The lack of safety of you are in hospital because the nurse patient ratio has run us ragged and we can’t be 10 places at once. But, no one is asking us, the healthcare professionals, how to fix it so it delivers what it promises. I ask you, who knows more about this? The healthcare/medical professionals, or politicians? *buzzer* Wrong answer! It’s politicians. They know everything. 🥴🤢🤮 I need to go to the ER! What do you mean the one nearest me is closed and I have to drive 100 miles to the next nearest one! This is not an exaggeration. It happens all the time if you live in small town Ontario.
For the record, my wife, here in the USA, needed several minor outpatient surgeries. Each specialist had a 6 months long wait. Surgeries more or less the same. When she goes to the E.R. often I go pick her back up 12 or 15 hours back because no one has helped her and by then she got better on her own. But we get to pay through the nose for it.
Australia is starting to go the same way, unfortunately. Four years for a free hip operation is common.
A couple weeks ago here in Canada I wanted to see a doctor (non emergency) and phoned a clinic and an hour later they called back and told me to come in and had to wait less than 10 mins when there.
Ok, half my family is Canadian. They live in pretty big cities and they never have to wait. I hear it's harder in the rural areas, but that's true here in the USA as well. Doctors prefer to live in Vancouver B.C. than Bumfu*k Ontario. Can't really blame them until they incentivize them.
Meanwhile in the USA while suffering from my suffocating breathing attack, the earliest appointment with the cardiologist was three weeks away. Glad the cause was not my heart.
I'd rather wait for a doctor than have to pay $700 AFTER INSURANCE for a friggin ultrasound.
Scotland.
Pro - it's pretty stunning.
Con - The weather is s**t.
Scotland: Pros - One of the most beautiful places to explore. Food fit for the climate. Con - Midges!
I read midgets the first time and got super confused. Lol
Load More Replies...Me too! (the burst into flames part). Most no-one else gets it. I think it's my Irish blood. Can't stand being in the sun and alway say I feel like I'm going to burst into flames. My sisters are the same.
Load More Replies...I have to agree. There are so many brilliant historical site to visit and stunning landscapes to explore. Explore the cultural sites in cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, etc.Visit the highlands by pack accordingly for weather and listen to the locals. If you are fascinated by history, myth, and the great outdoors I highly recommend visiting Shetland and Orkney and making your way up to Norway if you have time. Scotland will always hold a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to visit next year to see family and friends- it has been way too long. 🏴🏔️
my mom and dad just got back from scotland (I have a rainbow gonk and a stuffed highland coo) They say that it would be wonderful weather while in the train but then as soon as they get off the train, it starts raining.
I don't know where your folks are from, but in Scotland the trains tend to have roofs.
Load More Replies...I can stand the bad weather. Scotland is so beautiful and has many exciting historical places to visit🙂💞
Con: when a scotch person talks to you. You are not really sure if they are friendly or want to beat you up. ;-)
Con: even if you speak English fluently, you won't understand what half of the people there are saying.
UK Pro: We're like a USA lite. Some of the good parts of the US without the guns and religion.
Con: We're like a USA lite.
still beats 1000% higher school shootings and 1000 000% higher medical costs.
Load More Replies...Yeah - no. I am from the US and lived in the UK for a while. There is a state religion and they are chill about it. That is NOT the same as the predatory evangelicals here. The real problem for me was if something cost $1 here it cost 1 pound there so it didn't feel like I was paying $1.75 (the exchange rate at the time).
I am from USA and also lived in England for a couple years. The religion thing was so not an issue. Definitely not like out bible thumpers here.
Load More Replies...Definitely. I love the south but I'm too scared to go there on my own because of the guns and religion.
Load More Replies...After this past weekend in Aus (the Voice defeated and Neo-nazis in Melbourne allowed to salute and cowardly wear full face masks) I'm afraid that we've gone too far over and are giving you guys are run for your money on being US lite. (also without guns and religion)
Hum I would have to say no on this one. Perhaps we have some of the habits of fast food, but beyond that our similarities end there. We British universally hate our country, for a start. lol.
No we don't. How ridiculous. I hate the tossers who are running it but I bloody love the country . Or maybe you're just not from Yorkshire.
Load More Replies...Still not as much as America...they literally want trump back, it's beyond absurd.
Load More Replies...I high-tailed it out of there personally but it does have fascinating history and absolutely beautiful landscapes. I do like visiting my siblings when I go back, but I am always happy to leave the country as well!
Thought about moving back, be nice to be near family. Then Brexit and Boris sealed the "NOPE".
Load More Replies...Same goes for Canada. We are USA North. No guns, same stupid red-necked ideologies in too much of the population.
México. Tacos and narcos.
Short for "narcotraficante". Drug lords
Load More Replies...I sooo want to visit Mexico, but I can't really handle spicy food - is there another delicacy that Mexico could offer that isn't so hot??
You can eat a lot of things not spicy at all. The food depends very much on the places you want to go, but in most Mexican food almost all spiciness came from salsas, which are added by the eater at the table. Most tortilla or bread based dishes are not spicy by themselves. Depending of where you go, try “enchiladas suizas”, which is a variety of enchiladas with spiceless (but flavorful) tomato or tomatillo salsa, closer to an Italian sauce; try “chiles en nogada” and “chiles rellenos”, that are poblano peppers charred and totally spiceless, similar to bell peppers, stuffed with sweet ground meat or chesee. And try every taco, flauta, memela, gordita, quesadilla, sope, garnacha, huarache and whatever other dish made with corn masa harina. All of them are great, and spice is not forced on. If you feel very adventurous, moles, witch is a paste made of peppers, veggies, fruits, cocoa, nuts and oils, are very peculiar and divisive. Not all are spicy, but are a very unique thing.
Load More Replies...love Mexico, but not the crime, my family is married to beautiful mexican women!
I'm Venezuelan.
A pro is that our food is delicious, a con is that for like five years we had none of it.
Venezuela is one of the most beautiful countries on the world, sad what's goin on there
Washington D.C. is what's going on there. They (Washington) sanctioned the state-run oil company and placed a trade embargo against it, denying it US Dollars. It's what our corrupt and power-hungry government does to any country, even allies, that do not do as they are told.
Load More Replies...When I was about 12 I thought where would I go if things in my country went down, and my first thought was Venezuela, nice people, my godfather lived there, great relationships between Peruvians and Venezuelans, good oportunities... and now because of the greed of the last governments they drove more than half of their population to starve and migrate. Jódanse Chavez y Maduro!
Peru is going down. Thanks to the "nice people". Still want to go to Venezuela?
Load More Replies...Narco, criminal state, communist, facist government, criminal gov't, export trash to the USA!
Due to Socialism/Communism which is not pushing it's way into the US. Do stock up on food or be sorry.
Venezuelans should all be driving diamond cars and laughing at how poor the Saudis are.
This description sounds alot like one big capitalist country I know...

Armenia.
Pro: We still exist.
Con: Unsure for how much longer though since 3 neighbors repeatedly genocide/ethnicically cleanse/invade us.
Looking up the web for civil war in Armenia. It started in about 200 BC. The first Nagorno-Karabakh war started in 1988.
Pro…. Really pro and I can’t state this fact enough. Ararat Brandy
This comment makes me sad. Glad to hear you still exist. Everyone on this planet has a right to exist. I wish we could all try to get on!
I had to look up this country because I had no idea it even existed
A war occurred there literally days ago. Where are you from?
Load More Replies...Just made peace with one of it neighbors, love the amenians!
And most of the expats live in Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale or Fresno Ca.
Funny how the Kardashians don't give a c**p and they are from there...
Pro: if you're rich it's one of the best places in the world.
Con: you can't get rich here.
Italy
Probably it is you can't get rich if you're honest.
Load More Replies..."Best place it the world, can't get rich there"? Sounds like a socialist utopia. Sign me up.
Make a pizza with fresh tomatoes and mushrooms, bacon and egg. Breakfast pizza, problem solved.
Load More Replies...Nepotism, bureaucracy, taxes, pervasive mentality that whatever you want to do is probably not worth it. Assuming that business idea is never going to work.
Load More Replies...communists, looking for cheap labor from the third world, the men are pervert, want s*x with little boy from the gypies!
USA.
Pro: I have the freedom to choose the profession I love.
Con: I have to practice active shooter drills with my sweet kindergarten students.
Bonus!! Pro: my pay is funded by the government.
Con: My pay has me constantly worried about having enough money for my bills.
That's a weird choice of pro. Even most people living in dictatorships and autocracies have the freedom to choose a profession they love. And certainly everyone in a democracy does.
I think they were trying to think of something that was free in the land of the free and got stuck.
Load More Replies...Even though I usually say negative things about the states: Pro: amazing achievements in sciences e.g. NASA; amazing scenery e.g. Grand Canyon; amazing cities e.g. NY; Great cultural impact in movies and music. Cons: Republicans and MAGAs and their consequences.
Why the heck are you getting downvoted? God, this site is so damned toxic.
Load More Replies...To be honest that con is too well known, we need to talk about something else with y'all sometimes!
Load More Replies...There is no point to incarcerate all the law breakers. The better way is to rehabilitate and educate people so that they have the means to change.
Load More Replies...Pro- let me get back to you on that Cons - that's a long list. Let me get back to you on that as well. In a nutshell: Pro- blue states/con- red states. Guess which one I'm trapped in
As a pro I would say (just because is not a thing in my country) Thrift Stores! Cons: too many crazies.
Which country are you from? (I'm in Scotland, where we don't have huge supermarket-sized thrift stores like in the USA, but we have many small charity shops where I buy most of my clothes and a lot of other stuff.) I've never been to the US but if I do in the future I definitely want to check out the thrift stores, especially the Goodwill Outlet stores I've heard of which get sent leftovers from other Goodwill stores which are then sold very cheaply by weight. I'm in a group which refers to these as "the bins" since the stuff is sold from big plastic containers which are wheeled out for customers to rummage through. I was confused at first because "bins" in my country normally means containers for trash disposal.
Load More Replies...You might have the freedom, but you probably can't afford it...or will be paying on your student loans the rest of your life. I started on the path to the career I wanted, but it would cost about $100,000, so I settled for good benefits and a short commute...
Pro - lots of stuff is fairly cheap. Con - people still can't afford it because their bosses hoard the money and pay them a pittance, so they have to beg customers for money to eat.
Pros: It depends because the US is vast. Cons: It depends because the US is vast.
Egypt.
Pros: it has an airport.
Cons: I don't have money to get on a plane in that airport to get the hell out.
Con -women are not safe here, many women I know have been groped and harassed, and a lot of men wont talk to you if you are with a man they will ask your husband/boyfriend instead, very agressive salesmen in shops, friend was puled into a shop and they locked the door telling her to buy something, she had to scream to be let out.
At this point I'm afraid of asking you for a pro...
Load More Replies...I always wanted to visit Egypt because im interested in history. But after so many people here on BP told horrible stories about their visit I really hesitate 😐
Yeah - I'm a woman and not going to veil, so I don't go to places where I am expected too. I don't believe religious people who make outsiders wear their religious garb. A hijab is not a costume. If I wore it that's all it would be.
Load More Replies...Pros -- steep history and amazing architecture. Con - women can't travel there alone.
If I can't travel alone, I won't go even if I could travel with a male partner or friends. I won't spend a single Euro in a country where I'm considered inferior. (Edit: spelling)
Load More Replies...Pro: I mean y'all probably have like the coolest ancient history. Or at the very least it's tied with Rome and Greece.
I visited Egypt once, in 2007, and as a male travelling with my brother, it was okay, even though we were massively bothered by shop owners, everywhere. After the Egyptian POLICE killed two Israeli TOURISTS, I’m not setting my foot in that country anymore. Not before they have a completely different, non-Islamic government.
I've been to Egypt like five times, every time to the same city. (Hurghada)
South Africa.
Pros: Amazing climate, amazing food, amazing people, incredible landscapes and natural beauty, affordable cost of living compared to the rest of the world, robust private sector.
Cons: Horrific corruption, poverty is rife, horrendous public service delivery, rolling blackouts, inflation, stagnant economic growth.
A country that is rife with history as well....really want to go someday to learn more about their culture.
You should go. It is so beautiful and the people are really nice. I have been only twice but still feel the need to see more more more.
Load More Replies...I worked in Cape Town for two weeks and WOW, it is such a strange place. Was chatting to this girl who did all this amazing charity work yet was also HUGELY racist and homophobic. It was weird.
not surprising at all if you know the history. We're very similar to the "deep south" in USA, who also have charities.
Load More Replies...It's ironic and sad how that country seems to go down the drain step by step. I think everyone thought things would get better, not worse after the end of apartheid.
Things are better if you aren't white. You can go to formerly white-only schools. You are not under military curfew. You can marry whomever you want. You can start and own a business. You can get rich. It's mostly people who benefited from apartheid who complain these days; or those who are not currently benefiting from the corruption, shall we say.
Load More Replies...My cousin lives there and her stories make it sound like the frigging wild west.
If “poverty is rife” and you have “inflation” and “stagnant economic growth” you do NOT have an “affordable cost of living.”
Brazil.
Pro: it's a beautiful country.
CON: we have 9000 bank robberies or street-armed robberies every day.
Two of my Brazilian friends were comparing bullet wounds they have and laughing about it. I'm just standing there going, wha.. that's terrible! and they were like, ahhh it's Brazil.
I'm Brazilian myself and I think that's crazy. You either lied or your friends are from Rio.
Load More Replies...First day in Rio as a tourist. I get to witness 3 robberies outside my hotel and 1 police chase. Otherwise the country is amazing.
They also have one of the highest rates of cosmetic surgery for women in the world because of the ridiculous pressure to attain unnatural beauty standards. If a woman wants to get ahead in her job, she has to go through surgeries just to look 'presentable'. It's sick.
They aren't very good atheists, then. That's sort of the most important thing.
Load More Replies...I still remember the guys who tried to hijack and rob Pele until they realised who he was, backed up, apologised and left.
The Netherlands Too many pros so ill name a rather unknown one Pro: we have specialized tools for everything. Need a tool to cut out the seeds of an appel, here you go appelseedscutter. Want to get every little piece out of ketchup or appel sauce put of your bottle, here a flessenlikker. Con: house crisis, cost of living.
OP forgot the kaasschaaf, a tool to slice cheese. Very important!!!! Osthyvel_2...6d71e9.jpg
A common thread I'm seeing in many of these is the untenable, increasing cost of living and government corruption.
At least the Dutch government isn't very corrupt. And they hide it well!
Load More Replies...But in Netherlands ( or it was 20 years ago ), you have to prove you can afford the place. Rent can be no more than a certain percentage of your income.
Load More Replies...I have been very curious about the Netherlands. Yeah, I could google all about it, but I'd rather hear from my fellow Pandas that have or currently live there! What are the actual CONS of living n the Netherlands? Which areas are best? Worse? Etc.
As for areas, Avoid the big cities or even Holland. A bit further away, life is much nicer (greener, less crowded, less crime, nicer housing) and cheaper too. Like in Friesland, Drenthe or Brabant. I live in Groningen (the city) myself and it's great.
Load More Replies...Too many pro's, indeed. Main con for me is that its so ridiculously expensive compared to counties around us. Groceries, fuel but also traffic tickets are one of the highest in Europe
India.
Pro: amazing food & festivals.
Con: religious tension, overpopulation & corrupt government.
Terrible pollution, terrible air quality, and a lot of poor sanitation.
Drinking and bathing in the Ganges while a body floats by.
Load More Replies...Just to balance the negativity: amazing culture and ancient history. One of the oldest civilisations on earth.
Murdering all your women After they're raped - wonderful "religion" and culture! Keep it! Send me the food...
Germany.
con: we had one of, if not THE world's most infamous leader in history represent our country and it still haunts us to this day. Our education system is on par with American dumpsterfire and our current military would get soloed by our local gym.
pro: we got some hella good non-alcoholic drinks here, tho.
pro: Free healthcare, you can freely choose what you want to do with your life, no guns
We have guns, but we have better laws and less psychological problem cases due to better health care.
Load More Replies...The infamous leader was Austrian but yes, Nazism does haunt Germany to this day. However, far-right sentiment is on the rise globally and at least Germany is more aware of its dangers. I feel safer as a Jew here than I have in other countries.
"Thanks, Germany for owning our Hitler. And thanks, Germany for letting us own your Beethoven." - Austria.
The whole infamous leader thing is only an issue if you make it one. I recommend visiting Germany, it’s a friendly and beautiful place.
The only con there is everyone wants to practice English, so it can be hard to practice German lol.
Load More Replies...Meh I call BS on the education critique. I've met hundreds of Germans and the majority are WAAAY more educated than the average American. I mean, sure, if you are only talking about Brandenburgers then fine. I've met too many AfDers and Reichburgers in Brandenburg, but they a small minority.
Well, we USED to have a pretty solid education system, but it's falling apart for a couple of reasons, all of which are tied to money.
Load More Replies...The con wouldn't be as bad if not for the currently alarming amount of people who seem to want to go back to that dark era.
Germans have a great attitude, too. No body shaming, no matter what somebody looks like. Germans are empathetic & understand that could easily be them.
Tourist here. We learned every town had its own wine and beer. Drink local!

Pros: Beautiful beaches and views, great weather, hospitable people.
Cons: Corruption, exploitation of the marginalized members of the society, nepotism, bad infrastructure, low pay, and the culture of placing celebrities and politicians at the pedestal of our society.
Welcome to the Philippines.
I'm married to a Filipino and have visited many times. Pros: Beautiful scenery, incredible biodiversity, very hospitable people, great food, family-friendly, cheap pampering in the form of massages and manicures, etc. Cons: Poverty, celebrity worship/consumerism, pollution and (for me personally) the humidity!
Hospitable people - except when they're kidnapping you? No water comes out of the taps in Manila.
I love my country so much that I refuse to leave (translation: i'm too poor to leave)
I have 2 sons. Both adopted. They both have contact with birth families. My youngest 48 years is Filipino. Just found that out.
One thing I have never understood, why does the country start with Ph, but the people with F?
Cause it's was originally name "Islas Filipinas" to "Filipinas" during the Spanish colonization but it changes to english term "Philippine Islands" to "Philippines" during USA colonization

Spain.
Pros: almost everything: weather, food, open minded society, relatively affordable, free healthcare…
Cons: Our people always thinking that life is better anywhere else.
Sounds like a great place, let the moaners go! PS: I enjoy going to Spain, specially in winter when the weather is grey and gloomy in France.
Spain is bigger than Andalucia and Valencia! The weather is also grey and gloomy in winter in the north of Spain.
Load More Replies...I lived in Spain for several years and not a day goes by when I don't wish that I was still there..
Same sentiment, OdetteB! Lived in an old farmhouse in Alcala de Henares for six years -- most memorable years of my life. Only returned to the states as I ran out of money. Thought I'd accrue more and return - never happened. That was 40 years ago but "not a day goes by when I don't" miss the people, food and lifestyle. I'd pay small fortune for some Cochinillo Asado from the caves in Plaza Mayor...
Load More Replies...My wife and kids are Spanish . I am planning on moving there in 2 years. Not sure the best way to do it.
I’ll tell you a few, as someone who lived there for 32 years: - Ridiculously high unemployment - Ridiculously low wages - Workers’ rights are really s**t - Most people only care about themselves and their families, which leads to nepotism being rife and little possibility of social mobility. - Tax evasion is considered normal. - Really high freelancer fees make entrepreneurship really hard unless you’re loaded to start with. - Cockroaches.
Load More Replies...Hah hah, if only we could sleep that long. When I used to live and work there ( I lived in a smaller city so my experience may be very different) there was definitely a siesta period from about 2:00 to 3:30 pm where we would go eat and get some work done. My students would actually go home for about an hour and then come back at 4:00 for additional classes. I actually really liked it and it was a great way to have an actual break built into my day.

Greece: Pros: * The weather is nice, except in the summer when the sun just hates your very existence and you roast alive even with the AC on full blast. * Nice beaches, in the right weather. * Kick*ss cuisine.
Cons: * Greeks have a reputation of hospitality but honestly, we are not a very nice people. Sexist, closed-minded, always out to exploit others for gain. * Greeks naturally just hate each other over the shi*tiest things. We're talking actively, maliciously wishing misery upon one another, especially the ones we view as in any way successful or 'different'. * Anyone in the tourism industry is an exploitative shark, the islands are no longer places where people actually live, they are just glorified resorts for the rich.
I teach high school in Greece, and much of the negatives listed are changing each year. Every year (for the past 16 years) I've seen the kids get more open-minded, more aware of equality and then more caring about equality (gender and lgbtqia+, but...not so much with religion). More aware of and speaking out against bullying. The first year I taught "Of Mice and Men" not a single kid noticed the sexism. Taught it two years ago, and not only did they all immediately grasp the sexism, they also all noticed the rather homoerotic descriptions of the character Slim... :)
Mediterranean food in general has lots of good things.
Load More Replies...That two faced thing, isn't isolated to Greek's. That's just human nature. Not too long ago, it was something that was usually kept fairly contained. Private venting to those you're close to. But over the past decade or so? Everyone puts that pettiness, loud and proud on display for all the world to see. The sad part is, that even as they do it, they still can't admit, or even recognize what they're doing.
"the islands are no longer places where people actually live, they are just glorified resorts for the rich." The fourth-largest island in Hawaii -- Lanai -- is 98% owned by billlionaire Larry Ellison of Oracle. He still lets us poor people visit, as long as we fork over the cash he needs.

China.
Pro: culinary peak of the world, I'm very objective.
Con: we kinda live under the facade of a monarchy in the name of socialism.
It's neither a monarchy nor a classical dictatorship. I think "autocratic one party state" probably is the closest fitting descriptor. It just doesn't sound as catchy.
Load More Replies...I laugh every time someone talks about China being a socialist or communist country. Chinese culture makes it impossible. There are so many perks for certain people working in the government. The culture of gifts looks like bribing to American eyes (not that it's your problem). Women are nothing close to equal and people are killed for having an opinion. That is not the community taking care of itself.
Cons: coronavirus, sars, wet markets, state sponsored violence, genocide, literally fighting with every neighbors, illegitimate maritime claims, bully tactics, support for other autocratic regimes Also, culinary peak of the world? What are you on..
China DESCRIBES ITSELF as a "the peoples democratic dictatorship" It's a communist country, helmed by a dictator who uses some vague notion of tradition to make it all more palatable to outsiders. A dictator that had the massive balls to talk himself up about "lifting" hundreds of millions of people out of poverty....because they crossed that TWO DOLLAR PER DAY threshold. Censorship, information control, human rights violations as a rule, every flavor of slavery you can think of....all while making their extra special "economic zones" that allow those that already have a lot, to enjoy the fruits of capitalism, while the rest of the county...exists, technically. But the gall of anyone to presume to nominate China, home to the dog meat festival, in which dogs are hung upside down, and skinned alive, as the culinary peak of the world, is just flat out insane.
Definitely many types of good food. Your government treats you like s**t to keep you in line. I still remember a tour bus guide in China in the 80s repeatedly trying to convince us that China was becoming democratic. His 'proof' was things like, "Many farmers are allowed to won their own tractors". It was a couple of years before the Tiananmen Square incident.
Nothing socialist about China at all. The government does not provide much of any programs to care for its population. To get anything done one has to bribe the person in charge. Most government services are greased by bribes. The communist government's function is to suppress criticism, rebellion, and violence and to suck the wealth out of its people.
Pro: You can walk the streets at 2 a.m. and not get shot or robbed. Pro: Excellent and cheap public transit. Pro: Public transport is clean and efficient. Pro: Inexpensive food. Pro: Inexpensive healthcare and accessible.
France.
Pro: THE food, landscape.
Cons: Strikes, and for foreigners, poor level of English (and others languages)
I'd consider the strikes a huge pro. You keep your government and their capitalist overlords somewhat afraid!
It’s the sheer number of strikes that ALSO affect the metro and bus lines. If you get out of work and there’s a strike, you’re going to have to walk an extra few blocks to get transportation. Also, the shut down neighborhood businesses because huge thrown rocks, overturned cars, and fires are 100% a thing.
Load More Replies...I hate and in the same time, I love their strikes! I like how they are fighting for their rights.
I have such admiration for the strikers. It's ridiculous that workers in NO other countries unite to say, "We'll work, but we also want time to LIVE!"
Load More Replies...As a french, i upvote the pros. And in the cons, i´d say the country is nowhere as clean and safe as it should be at least in Paris.
Additional pro; the TGV's are great! mega-con: toilet paper in every tiny bit of nature.
Load More Replies...That's not to bad compared to other "cons". Pro-tip, "Con(s)" is a rude word in French, it is the "c*nt" word!
When in France as a Dutchie, I always do my best to speak French (learned it in school) and sometimes the natives apreciate it and try their best to communicate but sometimes they will flat out refuse to try to understand you and laugh in your face...
" poor level of English (and others languages)" like in America then ?? emoji-652e...293926.png
" In addition to French, several regional languages are also spoken to varying degrees, such as Alsatian, a Germanic dialect (specifically Alemannic) (spoken by 1.44% of the national population); Basque, a language isolate; Breton, a Celtic language (spoken by 0.61%); Corsican, an Italo-Dalmatian language; and various other Gallo-Romance languages (Langues d'Oïl 1.25%, Occitan 1.33%). Some of these languages are also spoken in neighbouring countries, such as Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy or Spain."
Load More Replies...Don't beat yourself up about not speaking other languages well. Here in UK I'm sure we are much worse at speaking anything other than English!
United Kingdom.
Pro: Universal healthcare, beautiful countryside, nothing that can kill you, good infrastructure, more cheeses than France, more beers than Germany, lush, no cockroaches, no snakes, almost no mosquitos, good education, religion in deep decline.
Cons: Cost of living, Pay rates, Non-income taxation (hidden taxation), Brexit, Conservatism, urban decline.
We have snakes. One species of which is venomous. It won't kill you but it will hurt for a while. Our education system has gone to s*it. We have cockroaches and plenty of mosquitoes (although our mozzies don't carry diseases - yet). Compared to the rest of Europe our infrastructure is dreadful and expensive. We may have universal healthcare, but the waiting lists are so long that people are dying before seeing specialists. Doctors and nurses and paramedics have been on multiple strikes.
I'll add: privatised infrastructure. Water companies are now allowed by the government to dump raw, untreated sewage everywhere, they have spent more on dividends and bonuses on fixing leaks and upgrading the infrastructure and now they want permission to charge us more to do the f*****g job they are meant to be doing.
only after we were all supposed to get a refund on our bills did they (the water bastards) decide they needed to fix everything and charge us for the pleasure
Load More Replies...The UK might have more beers than Germany, but at least the quality of the beer in Germany is protected by the Reinheitsgebot. Unfortunately, Brexit morons have waged a war against regulation (without realising that "red tape" is often there to protect us!) ending up with rivers of s**t and coastal waters that make you sick if you swim in them. I'm saying this as a born Brit who moved to Germany 20 years ago.
"nothing that can kill you...no cockroaches, no snakes, almost no mosquitos" - can't help but feel these are direct attacks on your Aussie cousins😉
Good infrastructure? I hear you Brits moan about your trains all the time.
I guess it's what you compare it to. Compared to Belgium? UK roads are way better. Compared to The Netherlands? They're not even close. No country is
Load More Replies...When I think about cheese, the Netherlands come to my mind. For more beer, it would be Belgium. But as a german I have to say, that we have the better beer.
As a neutral 3rd party and lover of beer I feel the need to say that Germany and Belgium both make some of my favorite beers in the world. But saying that one makes the better beer is like comparing apples to oranges. The styles of beer are so different that it's not really a fair comparison. That said, if I could only drink beer from one of them, I'd probably choose German beer.

Bosnia.
Pros: probably one of the best and most delicious food in Europe - ćevapi and burek unimaginable for anyone who didn't try them, even vegetables is for some reason much more appetising than in Great Brittain and Germany.
Cheap restaurants - for 15 -20 euros you can eat whatever and whereever you want
Coffe culture - everyday, even at work, there is bare minimum of one paid, sometimes two half-hour long pauses when people stop with everything and socialize in cafe.
Crime rate - although there is a lot of crime like corruption there is not much robbery and things like that and is safe in almost every city to walk alone in any time of day.
Hospitality - it is part of culture that everybody greet guests in their house with table full of food, some rakija - homemade brandy made from plum, pear, quince - we're experts in that, they teach you how to make rakija and show hospitality from childhood basicaly.
Free education and healt care - I can't stress this enough. There is no student loans, most universities are state owned universities and healt care is also free, even most medicament are free!
Cons:
Corruption: everything, and I mean everything is ruled by political connections, and because Bosnia is country of Bosnian muslims, Croatian catholtick and Serbian Orthodox christians (plenty of citizens don't consider Bosnia as their country, rather Serbia and Croatia) there is plenty of corruption and stealing of money.
National tensions: war from 90s is almost everyday topic, we are living in the past
Standard of living: salaries are pretty basic, if you have salary cca 2000-3000 euros you will literary live like an milionaire in USA, but if you are without political connections or expert in you area of work, you will find it extremly hard to find a job and unfortunately plenty of people are emigrating.
The hospitaility thing seems like a little much to me. But maybe there's less introverts there and more people who enjoy having company.
They are indeed the friendliest bunch of the ex-Yu countries. I know a lot of people from B&H and it's true

There is no "free" university or health care. Ever. Anywhere. EVERYONE pays taxes, to fund those things, thereby subsidizing the cost. Nothing is "free", stop perpetuating this misleading BS as it confuses one notable place that still can't figure out how to make those things happen.
Ireland
Pros: No guns, so a very safe place to live.
Cons: Totally unaffordable rent and near impossible to buy a house.
Really? Many British people have at least one Irish parent or grandparent. Myself included. We love the Irish. The French on the other hand...

Con : Way too much politics, casteism, division, racism, unsafe environment for girls, road rage.
Country : India

Cons: One of the poorest countries in the world ruled by a malicious military dictator who kills everyone who opposes him. Unending civil war (Edit: World's longest actually). Economy in the sh**ter. Basically, everything is much worse than almost every other country on earth.
Pros: We don't tend to live that long
I was fortunate to visit Yangon a few years ago and loved it! Great food, friendly people, beautiful city. In the country there is a lot of biodiversity. Hopefully it will be safe soon to receive tourist again.
You are also the only other country in the world besides the US that uses imperial measurements instead of metric.
Colombia.
Pro: Great weather, biodiversity.
Con: violence, corruption.
Give me a break. The violence is not nearly what it once was. And a lot about Colombia is actually very progressive compared to many places. Its beauty is unsurpassed, and places like Bogota are now at the forefront in terms of transit and planning.
My country, I’ll also add good food and really kind people for the pros, agree with the cons and I’ll also add the horrible traffic in the biggest cities, mainly Bogota
For Canada, I would say this A pro : Peace of mind. I don't have to worry if I will be able to afford college for my kids, I did not worry about money when my kids need healthcare, I don't have to worry about health insurance if I'm unemployed, I don't have to worry about being financially ruined if I get injured in an accident and the OTHER driver was at fault and not insured, I can just enjoy life and even if I have minimum savings and both my kids want to be doctors, money will never get in the way of that. A con : Winter can be rough. It's cold, everything gets dirty because snow is only nice and white for some time before cars turn it to that brown slush, and taxes are steep. Almost 40% of my income goes right back in taxes and on top of that, we can easily pay 12-15% in sales taxes which is a lot.
Ehhh Canadian here, I think OP might in the nice boomer generation, most gen xyz can't afford to live in the cities or go to university without owing half a mil student loans by the time you graduate
Not the boomer generation. Many of us are having to work until we die because seniors income doesn’t even reach up to the level considered to poverty. Unless you worked a job that provided a separate pension from that of the government. Even that leaves no guarantee you can keep your head above water. Once you turn 65 all of your healthcare needs are paid for by the government. Hooray!! No. If you need physiotherapy for anything you’ve got a very very very long wait because the government pays so little, hope you can afford to pay for it yourself. Our economy is hitting everyone. I don’t know what total utopia this person lives in, but it’s not Canada. But if it is, I don’t know how they managed to afford the deeply rose coloured glasses they’re wearing. I genuinely feel for younger generations who will never own a house, be able to afford to have the kids they won’t be able to afford to send to university, and who the he!! could afford to feed and clothe them anyway.
Load More Replies...Please don't take this as criticism of your country, or any other country, but those high taxes are what pay for the "free" stuff, like health care or university educations.
Pro: They will help you kill yourself. Con: if you're really sick you'll probably die.

Singapore.
Pros: Healthcare system where you pay based on your ability to pay with government subsidies, yet is very high quality, accessible and efficient. Very low crime rate. A lot of nice green architecture and increasing amounts of renewable energy. Very high home ownership rate of good quality public and private housing 80-90%. One of the worlds highest GDP per capita. Poor are allowed to rent apartments from the government for dirt cheap. Very good food. Cons: Very high cost of living that’s continuing to rise, increasing wealth inequality, increasingly harder to buy a home. The government keeps banning all the fun TV shows and movies.
You forgot a tiny thing : that’s not a democracy but an authoritarian regime that dictates everything. Thus no liberty at all. An open air prison.
Pros: A lot of good jobs here Cons: Anything below 80% in studies and no job for you
Poland Pro: not much going on Con: not much going on On the one hand you get low crime rate, low homelessness, stable employment rate, stable growth, not nearly as bad of a housing crisis compared to the west, cheap, fast and robust city and intercity public transport, decent public healthcare and education, conveniently placed żabkas on every street, nearly all housing is decent quality, extremely high chances you won't go cold, you won't be hungry, you won't be stuck in a bureaucratic nightmare, you won't be sick, you won't be bankrupt On the other hand we still power everything with coal and gasoline, we refuse to grant lgbt people marriage or anything like that, the church is strong, abortion isn't that accessible, generally no progress on social issues, and while your basic needs are nicely met, your polish wage will probably not grant you much else - gonna ride a 20yo car to your job in front of a 10yo computer so that you can go home and watch your newly bought 8yo TV. So, not much going on. You're gonna have a stable but quiet life here. You're gonna be tired but eh, could've been worse, at least your landlord does not give you any headaches so long as you pay up, and you always do. The flat is small, but there's no mould like in Birmingham and it's not legit cramped like in amsterdam. If you're queer you're gonna be queer exclusively at home. The air smells funny and your kid developed allergies. Allergy medication is cheap, thankfully. That's about it. Spice it up with a little vodka on the weekend, it's way cheaper than actual hobbies. Generally, a little money solves all problems but a little-little money is all you have.
Yeah. It was very, very hard 8 years for Poland. I don't trust the current coalition all that much too, but I hope they'll be able to repair at least some of the damages caused by previous ruling party. They'll not be worse, that's for sure :')
Load More Replies...CON: Has a problem with an infestation of white nationalists.
No. And the first half is in big part false, too. Terrible healthcare. Declining and very religion- and nationalism-oriented education. Lots of shops, yes, but many people's wages are so poor that they live from salary to salary even if they're frugal.

Romania has the same growing conditions as France. Romanian wine is amazing.
I'll assume you mean roma, by which everyone who interacts with them refer to as gypsies. They're not "persecuted" they're held accountable for their behavior. Like the child marriages (a girl in out building got knocked up at 13 by a 24 year old, and it was "arranged" by her parents) Leaving a trail of trash everywhere they go, the army of half starved animals they allow to run freely through the streets, the commonplace occurrence of giving TODDLERS, bags of solvents to huff. And checking people's backgrounds is essential to whether or not someone should have the Right to own a gun. We need red flag laws to stop irresponsible people. Also no one needs an AR-15 style gun except the military- especially if they are irresponsible. We have more laws for driving a car, drinking, and smoking than we do to buy a gun in many states. That is irresponsible.
Look, a gun should NEVER be easy to get. I grew up wihth 'em. They get stolen even if locked in a safe (some folks will have the safe stolen, as happened to my dad). They're somehow magically cheap on the street despite supposed regulation. It should not be easier to get a gun than to get a colonoscopy.
I reckon the average person is too stupid to own a lethal weapon - regardless of country.
If that were true, why do so many stupider than average people own guns?

Just because you fantasize in your head that you can out-gun a home invader or school shooter with your make-believe rambo skills, DOES NOT MEAN you will actually carry out that fantasy in a real life scenario.
Guns and the gun culture are NOT A PRO. We have mass shootings almost daily.
TURKEY Pros: * Naturally really beautiful. All those archeologic sites, natural beaches, Cappadocia etc. * Delicious food. * Friendly people. * Good weather. Can swim and also can go skiing. Cons: * Erdoğan * S****y government and economy * All those immigrant Syrians, Pakis etc. who do nothing but use our resources, breed like crazy and look at our women as if they want to eat them.
This one has friendly people as a pro and then immigrants as a con. How do those two things together make sense?
OP was reffering to immigrants not wanting to be really part of their new country, just using the resources, without giving something to it. At least, that's how I understood. And that's a major problem not just in Turkey. And not just with immigrants.

Geez, that last one. I'll admit, I don't have a good understanding of the situation in Turkiye, but that seems quite xenophobic.
Heard an a55hat say exactly the same things about immigrants from Turkey in the 90s in Berlin.
It really feels like the world is on the verge of collapse. Fascism is rising almost everywhere, people can't afford to live and have a home, wars and more wars - it seems like it's all about to come to a head. 😕
I don't think the world is in much worse shape than it's ever been, and better in some ways. We think it's bad because so many people focus on the bad while overlooking the good.

Yep. There's parts of the world where if you don't have the ability to slip a bribe during a handshake, you may as well avoid the country. And, yes, I have learned that skill.. And that's just to get out of the airport. The corruption is one thing that *does* trickle down. (Profits, not so muc.)

Since I used to live in Kenya: Pros - A large amount of diversity with language, communities and landscapes, great weather, affordable cost of living Cons - it's quite unsafe bc of high crime rate, limited transport options and roads are s**t, SO MUCH corruption, good luck finding water, little variety with food as low imports.
Canada, Pro: vast landscape, diverse culture, high standard of living, universal healthcare, clean drinking water, low crime rate, good infrastructure Con: Because of our close relationship with the USA we import all their political hatred. Our politicians are constantly trying to pit the working class against each other so that we forget that the rich and mega corps are bleeding us all dry.
Trinidad & Tobago Pro: Beautiful island, diverse people and wonderful food infused with all different cultures. Con: We are fast becoming a crime ridden and corruption nation.
The World has, is, and will always be a horrible place...of that you can always be assured.
