Artists Pay Tribute To The Pregnant Elephant Who Died Due To Someone Stuffing A Pineapple With Fireworks
On May 27, a pregnant elephant died in Kerala, India, of excruciating pain after it bit into a pineapple filled with firecrackers. The explosives went off in her mouth, damaging her jaw grievously.
A spokesperson from the Kerala Forest Department told Sky News that farmers are known to put fireworks inside food and plant it on the edges of their fields to keep away wild animals.
The incident came to the public's attention when forest officer Mohan Krishnan, part of the team who attempted to rescue the animal, shared the story on Facebook.

"She trusted everyone. When the pineapple she ate exploded, she must have been shocked not thinking about herself, but about the child she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months," Mr. Krishnan said.
Officials say the wild elephant probably wandered out of the Silent Valley National Park (SVNP) in search of food. It is believed to have reached the Malappuram District, where the animal allegedly bit into the fruit stuffed with firecrackers.

Animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi said Malapurram is one of the most dangerous places for animals in the whole county. "It is a murder, Malappuram is famous such incidents, it is India's most violent district. For instance, they throw poison on roads so that 300-400 birds and dogs die at one time," she said, adding that an elephant is killed every 3 days in Kerala.
The elephant's tongue and mouth were so badly injured, she wasn't able to eat. "She didn't harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village. She didn't crush a single home," Mr. Krishnan added.
The elephant later got to the Velliyar River and stood there with her head partially underwater. The forest officer explained that two captive elephants were brought to lead her out of the river, but she wouldn't move. Eventually, she died while still standing in the water.
Officials took her back to the forest in a truck and cremated her there. So far, it isn't clear where exactly the animal got hurt.

Local authorities have registered the case and initiated a probe into the killing of the 15-year-old elephant. Two organizations announced money rewards to anyone who can provide information that would lead to an arrest.
While the investigation is underway, people on social media have been paying tribute to the poor animal by sharing artworks they made to honor it.

I feel ashamed to know that a person from my homeland(Kerala) did this. I was a crying mess when I found out about the incident. Being a animal lover, you tend to have a soft side to every single being. I hope the person lives the rest of his life in misery.

Not enough, Haleema, we all have to join in fight to rid our planet of evil, and that takes commitment, we all - the consumers, are contributing to destruction of life on this planet - including our own; all those deadly bacteria and viruses are the work of human ignorance, arrogance, apathy, indifference, laziness, selfishness, and cruelty. Humans have to change the way they eat and live. Sorry is not enough, the way "humans" treat animals and our planet has direct consequences how they treat each other, and every single human being has power to change that, if not for animals, than for themselves. When somebody says " I'm so lucky, and I don't take my luck for granted" but does NOT do anything for those who suffer, does nothing for common good, than no - he/she does take his/her luck for granted. Get involved, change your lifestyle - please realize that what ever you do as a consumer directly impacts our planet, nature, and animals - either positively or negatively. My daughter's favorite animal is the elephant, reading this article and scrolling down the page to see the tributes to the momma elephant and her unborn calf caused an instant stream of tears to roll down my face. Jenny, - the farmers do, they put explosives inside fruits and plant them on the edges of their fields to keep wild animals away...... their fields are ever more expanding into the wild animals' territory - their home!! It is absolutely necessary to curb human overpopulation and urban sprawl especially in Asia, Latin America, and Africa where human population is exploding. Humans are raising billions upon the billions of animals for human consumption to cater to their insatiable appetite for meat, dairy, and eggs. How can our planet to withstand all that? It can't. It will collapse, emergence of all those deadly bacteria and viruses did NOT just happened!! We all - the consumers everywhere in the world are responsible !!! Please stop crying and change your lifestyle and start fighting for our planet, for animals' sake and our own!!!!

Yes they - the consumers are doing everything bad, they are eating one million animals every hour...therefore causing unconscionable pain and suffering to animals and causing destruction of our planet ( deforestation, methane pollution, emergence and spread of deadly bacteria and viruses). I know it's horrible but...the reality is that these farmers are trying to protect their crops. They are poor as f**k so any threat to them has to be eliminated. Trust me, the irony is not lost on me either. It's them that destroyed THEIR environment and are causing the elephants to be closer to humans. I'm in no way justifying the act, just that there is some logic to it, even if it strikes you as being horrible.

No, don’t go there. Are the majority of humans stuffing explosives into fruits and blowing up animals? No. Are the majority of humans who have read this story rightly disgusted by it? Yes. Don’t say a virus that has wiped out a lot of elderly and vulnerable people across the globe is somehow deserved. Disgusted this happened. Probably some kids thinking it would be a "fun" prank. Maybe they didn't realize or mean to kill such a large magnificent creature. I'm just confused how how the firecrackers were set off, without a flame.

Too many farms, too many people deprived of their conscience. 80 % of all grains planted is used to feed animals - billions upon the billions of animals to be heinously slaughtered to cater to human insatiable appetite for meat, dairy, and eggs. That's a lot of land stolen from wild animals. If all that crop was to feed people, there wouldn't be world hunger, no famine, no destruction of our planet, no animal suffering!!!

I have been to Kerala a number of times and it's hard to believe this incident happened there. Kerala is not the usual India we see in movies, entire state is like a tropical rain forest with rich greenery, actually the state is one of the cleanest and non-chaotic places I have explored in India. I'ts really hard to believe such an incident happened there. I don't think they could have done it intentionally, because I have seen people with pet elephants in Kerala (yes, pet elephants) and people taking them for walk and even bathing them in ponds. Upon scrolling through the news reports about the sad incident, I think the poor elephant may have eaten sweet-coated crackers that farmers use to ward off wild hogs that destroy their farms. elephant_b...77a078.jpg

The pineapple wasn't fed deliberately it was a bait to scare off wild boars. I don't know who you are but thanks for not jumping the gun. I am tired off people communalizing and politicize every unfortunate incident and just bickering without realising root of the evil.

The same with wild horses here, they are being rounded-up with helicopters and massacred, so public land could be used by ranchers for beef production. Billions upon the billions animals are raised in the world to be slaughtered, never enough meat for 7.8 billion of disgusting, destructive, heartless, irresponsible "people". How supposed to our planet support all this? Ill, cruel humans are meating themselves out of existence...taking us all down with them; but why animals have to suffer for it?

Hi. I'd like to bring your attention to the following. The article needs slight correction as the barbaric incident did not take place in Malappuram but in Mannarkkad division of Palakkad district. Actually, India is so messed up right now. With a communal right wing govt at the Centre, every incident blows up on the internet and is somehow always blamed on the minorities however false the claim be. And thus, the actual issue is always forgotten, and no solution is reached.In this particular incident, as reported by some news sites, Maneka Gandhi, who's is a member of the party in power at centre, she tried to balme it on Malappuram which is the only minority populated district in the state of Kerala. Many people have pointed it out to her in the reply of her tweet. I don't know what kind of humans would be so awful to an innocent animal and the what kind of person/s would give the f****d up incident a communal colour. Hope, we as humans find our humanity. Don't bring government into this. The government did not tell them to put explosive pineapples in the field. It was the people who caused this barbaric tragedy. Plain and simple.
