Someone Vandalized Gandhi’s Statue In San Francisco And It Now Has Beaming Red Eyes

What if we told you everything could be improved by simply adding googly eyes on it? You can have endless fun by putting them everywhere. Walls, doors, carpet, a random statue in the middle of your hometown, or even your dog – you name it. Sounds just about right, doesn’t it? But there’s always room for improvement, so no wonder someone figured out how to step it up to a completely new level. Sure it will take a bit longer than just popping googly eyes on, but wait till you see how cool these improved eyes look in the dark. How come, you may ask? Scroll down to find out!

This statue of Mahatma Gandhi located in San Francisco recently got a really cool improvement

This bronze sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi was sculpted by Zlatko Pounov and Steven Lowe as a gift from the Gandhi Memorial International. It’s located northeast of the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Usually, the glasses are stolen but this time, something was added

The city’s vandals have never lost their interest in it, as it is known they took away the glasses from this sculpture more than five times, leading to the SF Arts Commission always having a few extra pairs on hand.

Some prankster installed red eyes that glow in the dark

Only this time, nothing was taken away but rather put on. Someone posted pictures on Reddit, showing a man installing an addition to the statue’s original eyes that make them glow bright red in the dark and we can’t wrap our heads around whether it’s creepy or not.

They are really easy to make on your own

However, if you have a sudden wish to improve any sculptures in your own hometown, apparently it’s really easy. All you need is some red LEDs,
coin cell battery, and
tape.

So you can improve any statue wherever you are

All you need to do after taping the LEDs to the batteries is covering the construction in black play dough and you’re all set!

You decide whether it’s more creepy or cool

Sure, Gandhi could be seen as a pretty controversial figure but putting that aside, these red eyes will definitely make an impression no matter what. Imagine wandering the streets of San Francisco with those red eyes following you. Spooky!

The Internet was surely amused though

See, the Indian part of me wants to defend the statue and say it's disrespectful and nobody should be doing that, but the other Indian part of me is laughing my non-existent socks off. And then the American part of me is just looking at the Statue of Liberty in disappointment, because nothing says Freedom like glowing red laser eyes.

I hope they kept them in. This is hilarious! It also reminds me of this statue in Bulgaria of Tsar Samuil. His eyes glow in the dark! tsar-5d442...76edbc.jpg tsar-5d4422c76edbc.jpg

I hate the use of the word, "vandalized". Since this is easily remedied and doesn't damage the statue.

(Im from tamilnadu, india) I found this deeply disrespectful . Here in india we have great respect for him, he is our freedom fighter, live and die for our country, and teach lot of good things both in words and life. We respect him most, we studied abt his life. Thats why the reason we have his image in our currency. Before playing with his statue, please atleast read his books.

Agreed. If they tried this on the Statue of Liberty in the US or Christ the Redeemer in Rio there wouldn't be so much laughing, and rightfully so, because of what they represent to so many people. Lack of respect, once again.

Oh... my gawd... I... Okay, honestly I am a naive, overly positive thinking ninny. I like to think this was not done out of disrespect, but really to bring out the ... potential in the statue! Honestly, if I (HAHHAHAHAA) had a statue to memorialize me and someone gave me laser eyes. I'd be all up in the afterlife like 'HELL YAH!! Thank you!'

I am so divided about this one. Laughed really hard seeing the result. But I think statues or any other monument should be left alone. Reason: 1 artists doing a good job means a thousands of other copycat-morons with NO humor, NO artistry & NO skills really vandalizing our nations monuments/statues of our heroes&heroines or think it is funny to pull a similar prank on (for example) a War veteran monument? We have seen plenty of things getting destroyed, vandalized & even defecated on because utter idiots wanted to get some views.

I think that your sculpture is creative show of artistic expression yet, I find such gross because some beings while living don't like such imagery of themselves being produced and distributed so why do sum while they are not. I think it is cruel to think about because if they were not born looking that way don't place your creative spin on them .... Just my opinion

You are very significant in creating figures of likeness but I find now that such is spiritually distasteful, some individuals don't practice formal imagery of self not while their living so when gone please take in contrast a decision to leave certain tributes to others as conversational retrospect of thoughtfulness. I think your artwork is brilliantly grotesque Why, because if they were not born that way why consider making them appear as such.
