Sadness mixed with humor in a perplexing, chaotic, and confusing way—that’s what the r/FunnyandSad online group over on Reddit is all about. An old-hand on the net, having been founded in November 2013, it has since then grown into a community of nearly 700k members.
The subreddit does exactly what it says on the tin and documents posts from all over the net that are funny and sad at the same time. It’s a melange of laughing through tears (or is that crying while you laugh?) that will show you that life is far more varied and nuanced than the black-and-white we’re used to seeing on the news and on social media.
Sadness is a very natural part of life and we ought to embrace it, instead of running away from it. After all, we can’t be happy-go-lucky all the time (I would know, I tried). And while being sad can even have certain benefits, like improving our memory and judgment, getting stuck in negative thinking patterns and endless loops of sadness isn’t healthy for our mental wellbeing.
I had a quick chat with an expert in the field of psychology about how to identify what these negative thinking patterns look like and how focusing just on our failures, having black or white thinking, and holding ourselves accountable for everything that goes wrong all harm our mental health.

Emma Morton, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, told Bored Panda that, for example, what we tend to focus on more, our successes or our failures, can influence our long-term mental health. For instance, hyper-concentrating on all the things that go wrong or could potentially go wrong can trap us in a perpetual loop of self-criticism and anxiety.
This, in turn, can lead to feelings of very low self-esteem and even depression which, in turn, can make us unwilling to ask for help and support even though we might desperately need both. However, there are other ways how we can end up trapped in negative thinking patterns, too.

I read somewhere that the person who created insulin didn't patent it so that it could be given to people who need it to live at no cost to them. I may not have that quite right though.
You are more or less correct, Banting put the patent price of insulin at $1, and reportedly said, “Insulin belongs to the world, not to me "
Load More Replies...What makes it even worse is that everywhere else, it's approximately $10
Well, first of all you need to go after Congress and the FDA. The reason there are only three suppliers of insulin is because Congress reclassified insulin not as a GENERIC drug, thus available to all drug makers to sell, BUT BECAUSE CONGRESS RECLASSIFIED IT AS A BIOLOGIC drug. That meant that ANY drug company who wanted to produce insulin HAD TO GO THROUGH TESTING AGAIN. That meant that all these drug companies had to spend the equivalent of a BILLION dollars to RETEST AND RE-CERTIFY a drug that they had been selling for years. They couldn't afford it so they quit making it. Government bureaucrats do more damage than a century of non-stop hurricanes.
Congress did not classify insulin as biologic drug, it IS a biologic drug. Biologics is a term for drugs that are produced by living organisms, usually cell cultures (as opposed to chemical drugs that can synthetized by chemical reaction in a lab). That's why most pharmaceutical companies can't produce it, it's literally completely different technology. Also, it's a biologic everywhere, yet the US is the only developed country when it's unaffordable. I think it's because the other governments regulate drug prices for the sake of their citizens, while in the US, free market is worshiped as a god, regardless the consequences it has for people.

One of my prescription medications went up 1446% in 3months! And I have drug insurance!
Here in the US they charge you $40 to hold your baby after you give birth, so this is not surprising. And as long as lawmakers get top shelf health insurance with the job and lobbying is legal, this will never change. I'm sure there's a lot of politicians with their fingers in the pharma pie.
This is not funny and sad at the same time. Just sad and quite angering.
Totally agree! No major or even minor changes have been made to insulin, except the price! I use Lantus and Humalog, have used them since 2014- the only change is the amount of money we pay out of pocket for them. I start at $43 until I hit the donut hole in May/June when the price goes up to $125 a rx. It's ridiculous as these aren't the only high priced meds that I take everyday.
The brand name of one of my medications costs $3000/month at my local pharmacy. The generic version is $1200/month. Through mail order, I get a three-month supply for $10.
Wait until you hear that va((ine makers are protected from liability by our constitution. There is va((ine court which pays out millions of TAX PAYER dollars every year. They got close to $500mil in emergency funding to create a jab that they will make billions of dollars every year for 7 years until the patent runs out , and you know they will come up with multiple strains each year creating another patented seasonal jab .Meanwhile kids are literally getting tortured to death because we don't have enough social workers due to inadequate budgets .Meanwhile we've come up with hundreds of millions of dollars just to PROMOTE the Co vacs . I have to talk in code on a public forum so I don't get ba nn ed . America is a dumpster fire right now . Get your s**t together America. It's not good when the majority of the population is ashamed to live here.
I think my house went that far up in value without any significant changes to it.
yes? it is, actually extortion. apparantly legal. hunh. thank god allllll of us give a s**t enough to be informed and vote informed. right? we CAN make a difference..
if we don't....after damn near fifty years of yah hah...Trump is what they got. it's no where near the end...it'll get worse. the minority party is NOT going down unless we shove them down...

Original insulin is cheap.. Cutting edge improved insulin, whatever that is, is very expensive.
It IS illegal it's racketeering - trouble is Governments and Police forces the world over won't investigate, won't prosecute, won't punish.
So, why is it thank the medical industry can extort? The more you need it the more it costs!! But, anyone else it is illegal???
A life saving drug, should not make someone wealthy, who decides on prices, to save a life, the government cares not, as long as they get their share, our world has become greedy !!!
My insurance helps me most of the year but for several months both of mine run close to $1,000.00 each.
President Trump signed an executive order capping insulin prices to $35 a month. Then Biden comes along and kills it. Orange man bad.
a) Biden froze it, it isn't dead yet, and b) the order gave grants to health centres so they could sell the insulin for $35 a month to extremely low income houses. It wasn't for everyone.
Load More Replies...Does that mean people should start creating their own insulin at home like Meth?
Yeah in my country it costs around $23, seniors and pregnant woman free of charge. Free healthcare and redundation for meds should be normal everywhere
Don't forget about Epinephrine to save lives during anaphylaxis. Yup, and Narcan is free. They give it out like candy. And I'm NOT saying it shouldn't be used. I can't count how many times I've given it the field for overdoses. But other lifesaving drugs should be given the same merit.
That's what you get when you let Drug and Insurance companies write the Obama Care Act, ACA.
Thank US Govt Regulations for this. Literally we eliminate one single healthcare regulation and the price would be less than $20 a prescription. The companies charge that high due to US regulations on medications. They also make a lot of money. But the reason for it is govt regulations that prevent anyone but select manufacturers from making it here, requires them to have high costs to comply with medicare and medicaid, etc. Literally abolishing one single regulation will collapse prices. This is not extortion, this is government regulations
Neil, you have no idea how wrong you are.
Load More Replies...This is so insulting. Most people who need insulin are Type 1 diabetics, whose body just doesn't produce it. Many of them are young children, people who do sports, people who otherwise live healthy lives. It's an autoimmune disease, not a lifestyle one. I'm sorry, but go f yourself.
Load More Replies...“Negative thinking patterns can include only paying attention to failures and ignoring successes, black or white thinking (e.g., ‘If I get anything less than an A+ on this test, I’m a failure’), labeling oneself based on mistakes (e.g., ‘I’m a loser, an idiot’), [and] mind-reading (e.g., ‘Everyone will think I’m a loser for not getting this promotion’),” Emma went into detail with Bored Panda how we can end up being overly harsh with ourselves.

As such, having unrealistic expectations of what we’re capable of and being unreasonably demanding of ourselves can lead to “feelings of depression and worthlessness” that in turn “make it harder to reach out for help.” So while it’s perfectly fine to feel sadness, we all need to know when to ask for a helping hand if we find ourselves constantly stuck with only negative thoughts.

It's also because in the US you have to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills for prenatal care and labour and delivery, even if nothing goes wrong. You also get 2 weeks maternity leave, if you're lucky. A lot of people literally cannot afford to *have* a baby, let alone raise a child.

Spent $11.75 Growing Tomatoes This Year. Here's My Whole Harvest!
My single beet was a little bigger, but I planted Aton of veggies - got sick and all it takes is one day of neglect for everything to die in AZ summer temps (I’m new at this). I’m surprised your little tomato turned red so soon! Don’t they stay green in early growth? But what do I know - I get oddball things in my “garden” regularly. Going to try a fall planting this year. Your tomato is adorable. Keep trying!
