This handwriting is a form of "D'Nealian" - which is an easy way to teach "manuscript"(printing) which has "curved" lettering rather than block(straight lines). Young children will intrinsically draw an arc or curved line instead of a straight one. Once D'Nealian manuscript is mastered, it is simple to connect the letters by adding curves or loops to transition to Cursive. My children learned D'Nealian in elementary school. So - why did we change?

Ugh, that's not a book?! I'm ashamed (not really :). I write daily a lot of sheets of music, but I love my own handwriting. My notes are also very beautiful, but very different from that ones. For me, it's definitely a distraction if I have to work from someone else's handwriting. For example, in college I wasn't able to learn anything from someone else's script. It was so satisfying though, learning from my own handwriting. I always LOVED to write by my own hand, and nothing has changed. For me, it's art, like drawing. I also draw, whenever I get a chance. :)

Actually, I write much like this.

Not to detract from the amazing penmanship that I freely admit I could not necessarily produce myself- just pointing out there was a bit of an oops moment there. The author above wrote, SECREMATENTE not SECRETAMENTE. This is a common error when one is carefully copying rather than writing, paying attention to your lettering rather than what you are actually writing.
