Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a direct sales strategy some companies use to encourage existing distributors to recruit new ones, offering them a percentage of their recruits' sales. It's a legitimate pyramid scheme. What separates it from the illegal ones is that distributors can make money not only through getting people to enroll into the program but by selling products as well.
However, regardless of legal status, a lot of people have lost money after they got into MLM—even for those companies who are considered legit, the bulk of the profits come from recruiting new members. This was covered well in this segment of HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Many huns (people who shill products/services for an MLM; the sellers have a tendency to frequently use the word 'hun' when initiating a sales pitch) are often trying to take their operations online, bombarding their contacts with obnoxious "get rich fast" proposals. So in an attempt to counter them and "stop MLM schemes from draining our friends dry", the subreddit r/antiMLM is trying to highlight just how ridiculous they can be. Pharmacist Student Speaks Out
When I was in the waiting room for day surgery a few months ago, they had up a poster about how herbs and natural medicines interact with hospital drugs and procedures. It was pretty extraordinary and terrifying to read. Herbs and supplements and whatnot count when you list your medications!
My neighbor was MLM=selling what I call "magic fruit juice". It was ridiculous the claims she made and the price charged. She lived off it, swore by it, wound up in hospital with kidney failure on it. And, yes, the kidney failure was related to the "magic fruit juice".
I live this as well - cancer patients come in with even weirder med lists, and after none of the "natural" remedies have worked and they're out $20,000 from doing down to mexico for some shark liver oil treatment, they finally come knocking at western medicine's door and we're expected to save them. just like she said above, it's absolutely exhausting. this post is spot-on.
Rates of essential oil poisoning has increased dramatically since scentsy and doterra have been peddling there products. I have seen people recommend others to actually consume the oils, put drops straight on the tongue and putting it straight onto the skin. All of which should NOT be done. Even if they are natural, they can still be toxic.
I am very into herbals and a very few other alternative medicines. however, I try not to tell people about this or if I do get specific about what I use. Because of this. Too many people think if they read a paragraph on Pinterest or their friend Becky's mom's next door neighbor "discovered " a really great supplement she can get "at cost," that's all they need to know. And will argue about it like its the edge of the earth. They refuse to hear or understand that any therapy has counter indications, toxicities, allergies, interactions, etc. Even water has a toxicity point (look up hyponatremia). Alternative therapies do work, occasionally even better than traditional medicine, but you still have to be just as careful and aware. And make sure your herbalist and Doctor both know what you are taking. if your herbalist acts as if its not necessary they know your meds, run.
Honestly, as someone who has safely and successfully used herbal remedies and essential oils for decades I am horrified at what I hear coming out of MLMs and their distributers. None of these people have studied or know anything about these substances. And now the whole arena of this kind of treatment is being tarred with the same brush
Dad ended up in the hospital 2 weekends ago because of some stupid s**t he bought from a catalogue. Promising I don't know what, they target him because he's 92 years old. And I don't live with him or have power of attorney.
The multi level marketing tricks you into thinking you will get rich quick. The products are not regulated by the food and drug administration. Its poison

Ahh, sweet memories of Herbalife - I'll never forget some woman on the street stopped to ask how I would rate myself on a scale of 1-10 and I said 9 and she told me 'That's impossible, because you're fat. Come join Herbalife'
Such a rude woman. Not a good tactic to persuade people.
Load More Replies...Herbalife. Oh ye heavenly hosts, spare us. That's so old and worn, does anyone still.... I mean, obvs, yes, they do, but... Amway and Herbalife.
Stay away from Herbalife! At their promotion events they are very friendly towards you, but you will notice quite quickly that their friendliness is not genuine: they are mainly interested in your money and the money of your network, not (or very limited) in your health.
I Took Great Pleasure In This! (Haven't Seen This Person Since High School, And Even Then I Don't Think We Ever Talked To Each Other)
Yep. One of the reasons I shut down my social media accounts. I had other reasons, but wading through people's MLM junk and friend requests from people I barely knew that would then try to recruit me definitely worked against any benefit I found from being on social media.
Load More Replies...Ugh, this makes me so angry. I had a friend from back in the day I had been thinking about and wanting to connect with, so found her on Facebook and we friended. I should have known better when I saw that she was a Norwex consultant (and the regional selling champ, or whatever they call it). I sent her a PM saying how fun it was to reconnect, asking how she'd been doing with her new life (her husband had died right before we moved away, and apparently she'd remarried), etc. She only wanted to sell me her products. When I told her I already had a consultant or whatever (I mean, to be fair, I did participate in a niece's online party), she ASKED ME THE NAME OF THE CONSULTANT (I was able to give it to her), still tried to push her business on me, and when I told he I was NOT interested in her business, but WAS interested in finding out more about how she was doing and reconnecting as FRIENDS ... never heard from her again. Talk about feeling used.
my mom is a mlm but she only asks her VERY close friends that she KNOWS will be interested. she also has a separate insta account for posting stuff so that only people who are interested will see it. She doesn't make much from it and just enjoys doing it.
Damn...I understand MLM is tiresome and slimy, but sometimes people are just trying out different ways to make a living until they can figure things out. Just say no and move on, no need to try to crush them.
The trouble is, they usually go about it in such a slippery way. If you politely refuse, they drop you like a hot potato and never talk to you again.

You can trust essential oils if used correctly. Like essential mint can help against mild stomach ache and help against mild headache. Or essential cloves can help against mild tooth-ache etc. They are for soothing not healing. But of course they can't help against bacterias or viruses or Tumors or what ever those antivaxxers want us to believe.
Meh. I like a good peppermint or eucalyptus oil. It smells good and is soothing.

That is so wrong, and dangerous telling someone who looks so fit they are overweight. Glad she is so body confident.

"Rude"? I don't get it. You called her fat out of the blue? She asks for clarification?
Would it be that difficult to just reply "I am sorry, you look absolutely fine and don't need any weightloss. Have a nice day.", instead of insulting her?

The Huns conquered large parts of Europe and western Asia and they did all of that without lavender oil. Stop Hun shaming!
God help the essentially oiled. A rash is sometimes the least of their worries. *sigh*
Again, its a useful product people are using unintelligently. Peppermint oil works better than vapor rub, but only for the same purpose, not for say, an acute severe asthma attack. And , just like with traditional meds, not everything is going to be as effective for each individual, or should even be used. As someone who does use alternative therapies, but does extensive research, discusses it with both my Doctor and my very qualified herbalist, etc. this willingness to believe the salesperson has any kind of knowledge beyond a company brochure really scares me

I always carry some sort of strong peppermint scented something, even MaxFeeze for sore muscles has a strong peppermint odor and works great for sinus and tension headaches. i usually put a little on my palms and inhale thru my nose and then my mouth, a drop on my temples if its a really bad headache.

Yes. I went to an Amway meeting years ago, just for fun, because I've always known people don't get rich magically. The speaker promised that if we joined their sect we would be rich in two years. People believed him!!! How can they be so imbecile? Suddenly I asked him: how long have you been doing this? Five years? How come you are not rich? (I knew he was not rich even if he claimed he was making a lot of money because his suit was dreadful polyester, and his shoes and watch were cheap), If getting rich is so easy, what have you been doing the last five years? I was expelled from the meeting. And from every other meeting forever. I still laugh after all these years whenever I remember the guru's expression. Some of my best friends got hooked though. Sad. Suddenly they stopped talking to "non-believers" and became paranoid. They also lost a lot money. I haven't seen them since.

I know someone who managed to get one of the free cars from Mary Kay. I was tricked into going to a party from a pretend friend and her sell game was probably close to that of someone who sells time shares. actually, one is, unfortunately. She never bothered me though because I think she was soooo good at the scam she could smell the gullible from a mile away.
I do know one person who made a huge amount of money from an MLM. But it was because she was a trusted professional in our area. She spiraled into postpartum depression after her baby was born and documented on social media how she magically recovered using the MLM products. She took advantage of the people who trusted her in her professional capacity (the vast majority of whom are low income), sold them snake oil, told them they could also make a ton of money if they signed up under her, while basically bleeding the local market dry herself. The whole thing made me physically ill, and she and I never spoke again. tl/dr: it's possible to make a killing if you're the first one in your market and you're a trash person.

And I came out as bi and my family has kept me around, and a lot of members have been supportive. You don’t have to mention someone’s religion in something like this, it doesn’t matter
As a bi, tatted, Protestant, moving to Utah was definitely a culture shock from the rest of the country. I have seen more mlms out here than I did before. Just sell drugs and get it over with. At least the money is better.

I Am Appalled. I Lost My Son To Depression And My Stepdaughter Posts This. Very Disrespectful And Hurtful
This doesn’t read like a genuine MLM post. This sounds like a vindictive, spiteful post to specifically taunt a grieving stepmother. Horrid.
The last sentence indicates it is an MLM. This person is just a crappy human being either way.

Oh adding a knife emoji, nice touch. Why not a noose? train? Pill emoji? Or go the whole hog and use them all?
Load More Replies...Oh s**t, you're right. My Dad wasn't depressed until the moment that he killed himself. F*****g k**b gobbler. If somebody were to give me a dollar for every time I've seen or heard people advertising dangerous misconceptions about suicide, I'd have enough to by myself some quality hiking gear.
I don’t have depression yet I’ve had 12 suicide attempts. On the other hand, someone I’m close to has depression, yet has not attempted to kill themselves. I-
Oh my god, that is absolutely awful. I hope she apologizes and changes her ways.

School reunions; instigated by successful people who want to gloat and attended by those of a similar ilk. Others, who have not been so successful, do also attend. But then realised it was a mistake.
Congrats on the 3+ kids. Congrats on never leaving your hometown. Congrats on being a racist bigoted sack of s**t (how my reunion would sound like)
Not Wrong
Uh... Essential oils smell nice - I use them during sprig cleaning to have a different scent in the house. However, that's clearly all they are good for. I don't know what CBD oil smells like, but if it smells like peppermint, yeah, you could pretty much get rid of all others. Edit: I do not sell, have never sold, will never sell essential oils. I got mine from a regular retailer.
Selling essential oils is fine, it's when someone sells them claiming they have properties that they don't have that is the issue... saying they smell nice is fine and honest as a selling tactic.
Load More Replies...Isnt that true? We gave cbd oil to our dog after when he had backproblems. The pills for pain werent enough. He was super calm with it. And when he had to be put down because his heart had failed we also gave it to him 💜
it's good stuff! my mom and i both use it for chronic pain, and we've got one anxious dog who benefits from it as well

Inviting People On Dates To Pitch A Pyramid Scheme. Plenty Of "Me Toos" In The Comments
This is one of the reasons I have so little trust in people. It's either MLM or religion. Now that I think about it, they're kind of related.
I almost posted about correlation between believing in the supernatural and believing in MLMs on one of the posts further up the list, but I honestly think you should believe in whatever you want, so long as it doesn't hurt others, and I wouldn't want to insult religious people like that.

Wow! Teaching your kids to be addicted to substances for even the smallest things. That's insanity.
my mom would kill me if i tried to put a scented substance on myself every time i was scared. she has a preternatural sense of smell and would be constantly complaining about how strong the scent was.

that is a sad representation of Christianity. there are some people (okay a lot of people) who use it as an excuse to be entitled, but there are also open and affirming churches that do their best to be inclusive.
Oddly enough, only people I know that believe in essential oils are not Christians. Most claim to be witches, atheists or pagans. Not edgy at all.

It's actually sad when you think about all the money she had to invest and never will get back.
It's only sad if she has a family that's impacted by her poor decisions. If she's facing the consequences of her own stupidity, there's nothing sad about it.

The “what happened to our city” is about the “riots” last year over racial injustice. She thinks people were crying over the city and not the loss of black lives that led to the riots. So double stupid.

Load More Replies...Oh, yes. We had an MLMer infiltrate PTSD peer group. That lasted about five minutes. Essential oils essentially smell nice - that's all they do. Now, I will point out that a certain combination of lavender and jasmine does help me sleep, but that's entirely psychosomatic - it triggers a memory of the blanket my nan used to wrap me in when I was little. But unless your grandma also used lavender soap and grew jasmine in the garden where the laundry was hung to dry, it's highly unlikely that you would get even a smidgen of the same effect.
