I remember when I went to school and they used to tell us how superior we were as a culture to everyone else. They'd put everyone else down and say that Greek should have been the 1st spoken language in the world as opposed to English. They really didn't like the English or Americans. Saying this, although I wouldn't choose to live there I do like to visit often and most people are nice towards tourists.

I think you're thinking of the english loanwords from Greek like biology, geometry, palaeontology, etc., those sorts of words. The base of english is germanic. Simple demonstration. "Son". German: "Sohn". Greek: "Nios". English: "Sun". German: "Sonne". Greek: 'elios. Definitely different. Both indo-european, but the link to greek is remote.

Really? Chinese, Aztecs, Egyptians? Those all predates Greeks. There were civilizations that predates Greek civilization by the total length of Greek civilization. The correct thing to say would have been, Greek civilization is the basis for most European civilizations. Definitely not all. Still, I like them the best in comparison along with Chinese.
