40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know I am a welder for a company that builds rollercoasters... Every single weld is inspected and x-rayed for any defect. So I guess this doesn't apply but just so everyone can feel a little bit safer I figured I'd let you internet people know.

I think the safety people walk wooden coasters every day as well to make sure all is ok - like the track hasn’t gone wonky or loose bolts, etc.

I'm one of the inspectors, and while roller coasters is unusual, a weld is a weld. I remember a roller coasters car rolling in once after it came in contact with another one. The lawsuit after a deadly incident would be huge so they do what they can

This may not be a coaster you're familiar with, but if you are, do you know why Cedar Point's Dragster is being shut down? The few articles I've seen only mention the recent accident. I never got the chance to ride it, but what a ride it must have been. If it was half as scary as I thought the Magnum was when I first rode it, I'm sure this one would have been worth "riding the lines".

That was a carnival roller coaster. Coasters at actual theme parks have MUCH tighter safety regulations and are inspected daily. The rides at carnivals are hurriedly slapped together by pill-addicted carnies who might miss a couple bolts.

Well, safety is an issue that needs to be adressed, and of all things, welding often is the step in the process from raw to ready that bears the highest risk. A good welder, I mean a really, really good one, is someone you don't just find about anywhere, or can train regardless of total lack of talent, a good welder, who excels in precious situations and in difficult settings, who thrives the harder it gets ... should be paid as much as an engineer. I'm an engineer. Also, you literally build a device that allows physics to apply joy on stressed people like engineers, ... or kids ... or those who are both.

Because way too many people are idiots, and nearly all of the ones who are will lie about it. Which makes calling tech support ten times as frustrating for those of us who aren't, because the techs are so used to people lying to them that they never believe you when you say, "Yes, actually I *have* tried all of the standard fixes, and they didn't work, or else I wouldn't have called you. Now can you actually LISTEN to the problem I'm trying to solve, instead of telling me to check if the cables are connected for the fourth time in a row?"

I have to disagree on this one. If you're talking about just using the computer again, then yes: turning off and turning it back on again will often allow you to go on working in the short term. However, it may not fix a developing underlying issue. If you have a hardware issue, you may have a short time in which you have technical difficulties of increasing frequency and severity, and in some of those cases, off-on may temporarily allow work to continue, but will not fix the impending failure of the hardware.

That sort of persistent hardware issue is very unusual. The vast majority of the time, the problem is some obscure and hidden internal configuration that gets reset when the computer reboots. So in practice, rebooting really does fix the problem in all but a very few cases.

If you have Windows 8 or higher, and you do not have fast startup turned off (which has to be done manually, so if you don't know what it is then it's on), a restart will work better than shutting down. Fast startup causes a hibernation on shut down, so stuff doesn't clear properly. A restart clears everything.

I guess it depends on what you mean by fundamental level. For example, I can press buttons like a pro but that doesn't mean I can fix a computer. Sometimes the problem is the one option I just haven't thought to try, even as simple as power off and on again if rebooting hasn't helped. Next time I'll think of that too. I'm not the hardware expert with a check list; I have my job, the IT people have theirs. I can't fix my car or fridge either.

Many of us have been in a situation at work where we realized that something suspicious was going on. Whether we had to sign an NDA or a contract promising that we would keep our lips sealed about the business’ practices or we were threatened with losing our job if we opened up to the public, it’s no secret that companies keep information from the public. Sometimes secrets are used to ensure the business has a leg-up over competitors or utilized to keep the magic alive, at places like theme parks and Disneyland. But other times, dirty little secrets are intentionally kept because business owners know that the public would not be supportive of their practices.

When secrets come to light about discrimination or unfair treatment of employees behind the scenes, consumers are quick to boycott or tarnish the name of a company. And they should be. We all want to know where our money is going, and if a corporation does not align with our morals, they won’t get a penny more. Unfortunately, however, many businesses have mastered the art of keeping company secrets under lock and key, so we are very lucky when employees, like the people featured on this list, decide to open up.

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know Many of the books you read - especially romance - aren't written by the person who's name is on the cover. Most romance books are ghostwritten and bought by someone else (often a man, I've found) and published under a female's name with a fake bio. How do I know this? I'm a ghostwriter.

Not true. Wife works in romance industry and has worked with hundreds of authors. Most write under a pseudonym. Many of her work friends have two names, author name and real name. A few of the biggest names who publish many novels back-to-back do use ghostwriters to keep up production. In those cases, the author lays out the idea and then collaborates with the ghostwriter.

Without disrespecting an entire industry nor wishing them to lose their work (ghostwriters) I can’t help but feel shortchanged/duped by discovering something I read was merely outlined by the so-called author. Or that the so-called author didn’t write a word of their biopic or biography, what happened was they spent time vocalizing reminiscences that someone else rationalized into a coherent narrative. I think what I’m saying is it’s ok (for me) if you don’t want to be personally identified as a ghostwriter but it doesn’t sit right that another person claims author status when they did no such thing.

Were we given time to grieve the death of someone we had taken care of for a week or more:: nope. Was counselling offered: nope. Also very important to start asap! After 6 minutes without CPR your chances decrease dramatically . And even it is 5% ..... It's still worth it. i've done CPR on a 92 year old. He did not survive, but lived for a week so the family had a chance to express their love and their goodbyes.

I believe that stat is "on average, based on how anyone preforms CPR". I had to get recertified recently and 99% of the lesson time was spent on ways to improve the effectiveness of your CPR, along with an explanation of why those things were so important. The odds still aren't great, we were told. However, we were shown a video of a case that looked hopeless (an old Australian beach rescue) where they followed the steps (as they were at the time, before some of the procedure updates) even as the guy didn't seem to improve. He made a full recovery. Know what to do - see if there's a free class in your area or use the red cross learning resources, including their app. Preparedness increases the percentage.

Cause of death has a big impact on resuscitation rates. With drowning, for example there's nothing physically wrong with the person. A person's heart stops for a reason, and that reason is going to have an impact on whether or not they can be brought back. I think in my first responder district (large geographical area, aging population) our rate is more like 3%. Even so, bystander CPR is critical for those very few saves.

First Responder here--I have yet to be on a save. I think there were two in the last five years in my jurisdiction. There are so many different factors impacting viability--for example, the thing that made your heart stop in the first place is important. It's not like the movies. In training we're taught that people who die nearly always stay dead, and rather than beating ourselves up for failing to save them we have to remember it's a miracle if we bring them back. We still try our hardest.

This. Hearts don't just stop, and will normally restart themselves if they are stopped (contrary to Hollywood myth, the purpose of shocking a patient is to **stop** their heart!) Thus it comes down to whether the doctors can fix what caused the heart to stop and whether too much damage was done before they can do so.

Agree that people shouldn't give up, but there's perfectly reasonable reasons why survival rates vary. For example, in children the issue is typically respiratory in nature (e.g. drowning especialy). The coldness of the water and the otherwise healthy nature of the body make survival much more likely. Children and younger adults that drown in icy water are especially good resuscitation candidates.

Half the reason I call our work IT department is because I've googled the fix and end up needing admin rights for it. The other half is when I'm remote working at home and the computer won't connect to begin with.

To consumers, it might seem suspicious that companies feel the need to hide things from us. But according to David Lonsdale, President of Allegiance Capital, many companies depend on keeping secrets for their livelihood, particularly when they decide to sell the business to someone else. He explains in an article he wrote for Inc. that if businesses revealed all of their secrets, they could lose control during a sale. Appearances are extremely important when running a business, so David says that a business owner should have full control over what the public knows about their company. This requires having a trustworthy investment bank, he notes, so there are never any surprises or concerns about what information is released.

David also notes that when a sale is made, the former and new owners should collaborate and decide precisely what story will be released to the public. “Effective confidentiality management provides control and prevents unfounded information from impacting the sale,” David writes.

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know If your baby is in full-time care (40+ hours a week) the odds are that we know about their milestones (rolling, crawling, walking, talking, etc...) before you do. It's just because the majority of their waking time is spent with us. We don't tell you because working hard to provide for your kid doesn't make you a bad parent, and we don't want you to feel like you're missing out.

I asked my daughter's nursery to tell me if she reached any milestones with them. I was working hard at college in order to get a better job so I could provide what my child needed. To me, it was important to record when the milestone was reached even if I wasn't the one to witness it

Whilst it would be valid advice in places where it is now legal, I think though the point of the manager's advice was that the missing drugs were illegal (at the time/location of the theft complaint) and the car owner was never going to report it to the police. Had it been legal drugs, the manager would have probably been more inclined to act on the complaint to avoid negative publicity for the business.

The next reason David notes for why companies must maintain secrets during a sale is because they could lose customers if the information became public. “If customers discover you are selling the business, they may be less willing to do business with you, because they can’t predict what will happen next or how it will impact them,” David writes. “Your competitors are fully aware of this, and can be expected to use any information about a possible sale to help lure customers away from you.”

He also notes that potential new customers may be deterred from doing business with you if they get word of the sale happening. It’s not ideal to be trapped in a contract with new owners that the customers do not know well, or perhaps even trust. David explains that new owners usually do not impact the customers at all, but customers tend to scare easily if they hear about the information abruptly. David says it’s best to reveal the news of a sale to them when you and the new owners feel ready.

I'm glad you said that. I was beginning to wonder if my 15 year old (who's a very good student) was getting to be too old for crying occasionally over the same weekly homework assignment that seems to push his nerves to their limit. Granted, he doesn't cry every week, but his frustration is very evident each time he sits down to do what seems essentially like busy work.

We are literally dealing with our kids' school over a shitty teacher picking on my kids. Last year it was daughter. She is a great student in AP and always has good grades. Talks a bit too much but otherwise well behaved. This year her younger brother has the same teacher and comes home upset with her everyday becuase she picks on him and embarrasses him. He came home balling Friday because of her. Needless to say my wife was on the phone making a report and even the principal agreed they get lots of complaints about her and what she did Friday was unacceptable behavior. She needs to be fired because she is a shitty educator and even shittier human being.

We helped her get it ready for listing. I personally was at her home on Easter Sunday painting the inside and helping her clean up. I know I'm not the only agent who has done things like this for their clients. There are plenty agents who do this because they genuinely want to help people. It isn't always for the money.

Another reason David says companies must maintain secrets during a sale is to not lose high-value employees. He explains that employees often worry that their jobs are in jeopardy when they hear news of a sale, and if they start jumping ship, the quality of the business could suffer. David recommends keeping key employees in on the sale, so they can help throughout the process, and letting everyone else know later on. Similar to how customers can be scared off by the news of a sale, employees can be too. Finally, David writes that keeping a sale under wraps until it’s necessary to break the news can be vital to maintaining company value.

“In the end, confidentiality is all about ethics,” he writes. “You and the professionals you hire to sell your company are entrusted with information that can have a serious impact upon the company, and even the lives of those associated with it. Yes, loose lips sink ships. But they can also sink your sale.”

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know It is against Walmart's company policy for hourly employees to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Rather, they must notify the nearest manager, which could take anywhere from minutes to weeks depending on where the manager is, what they are doing, whether the hourly employee has a walkie, etc. Employees can be, and have been, fired for calling 911 to report an in-store emergency.

Liability. Same reason most retail employees are required by their employer to allow shoplifters leave the store if there is no AP officers on duty: it opens them up to lawsuits if something goes wrong.

It just happened that an African-American man triumphed in lawsuit against Walmart when falsely accused of shoplifting by a white employee. The employee had a history of false accusations and when he called the police he also said the man was threatening him. Could have a lot to do with the policy.

But giving some racist white employee the ability to call the police because some black youth looked "suspicious" doesn't work either. I doubt some one calling 911 for a true medical emergency would actually get fired. It would be terrible PR....

I make over half my money using one tool that costs $50, and a skill that can be learned in 20 minutes. Edit: The tool is a shifter and the skill is knowing how to pull apart and install taps. Drain snakes and plungers are how I make almost all the rest. That "almost" is the reason I need all of my other tools.

It’s interesting that David Lonsdale notes the ethics of keeping company secrets when a business is being sold, because it often feels like corporations keep things to the public to conceal unethical practices. But according to Sarah Green Carmichael at Harvard Business Review, companies might be realizing that it’s actually better to reveal their highly guarded secrets. She spoke to Sami Luukkonen, Accenture’s Global Electronics and High Tech Industry Lead, about why secrecy is becoming less helpful for businesses over time, and he explained that while the tech industry has long been full of secrets, times are changing.

“The technology itself is now really driving the need to become more open,” Sami told HBR. “With digitalization and the Internet of Things, that’s really changing the industry. The convergence of intelligent products, processes, and services, that’s really causing the need for change. So companies need to open up about what kind of products are coming, and that’s really difficult for most companies because of the legacy of protecting intellectual property.”

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know I worked in an independent senior citizens center for five years. I don't know about other facilities that are independent, but at mine, you were supposed to be mostly to completely independent. There were some tenants that needed a caretaker with them at all times, but the families found that cheaper than moving them to an assisted living facility. After about two years, we got a new director. We went from 20 rooms filled to all 42 in a few months. Several of these tenants I would hardly call mostly to completely independent. Clearly my boss just wanted to fill the rooms and get his bonus. We had three women move in during the same week that all had dementia. One of them went completely downhill in a period of eight months. When she first got there, she just seemed forgetful and quick to anger. After a month, she forgot her children were adults and that her husband died. Another month, and she had no idea where she was. She thought the facility was a hotel and would always talk about how horribly she was treated. She caught her apartment on fire. She'd freak out when there were guests in the dining room. Eventually she refused to bathe, and ended up with a severe yeast infection between rolls on her stomach. We had no idea that was going on, we just knew she wasn't bathing and smelled very foul. She ended her eight month stay stealing other tenant's outdoor decorations and becoming incontinent. The others caused all kinds of problems, wouldn't stop harassing staff to the point where it was getting really hard to perform our tasks, other tenants threatened to move out and refused to go to meals so they could avoid them... My point of this is: Just because a facility says they'll accept your dementia ridden parents doesn't mean you should place them there. Sure, it's cheaper for you. But they don't get the care they need. There are no nurses in our independent facility. In the five years I worked there, we only had two half hour meetings educating our staff about dementia and how to handle the people suffering from it. There's no one watching them 24/7. They could seriously harm themselves and others. They need to be somewhere where the staff is trained to handle them at their worst, and properly guide them through the horrible transition. Please, think twice before putting them in independent facilities.

It can be really hard for families to understand how severe their loved one's situation is, and accepting the situation is difficult, too. It's a good idea to speak to your loved one's doctor and close friends if you're unsure what level of care they need. Elder care in the US is nowhere what it should be, and many employees at these facilities are minimally trained. It's essential you visit your loved ones and monitor their condition, the condition of their room, and the quality of the staff. Get to know the people who work there a little. Those are important ways avoid/catch abuse and ensure your loved one maintains good quality of life.

One thing we found as a red flag was if they didn't want family coming to visit. We had my MIL in one ( it was more an assisted living family home) where they said we could come and go as much as we wanted, during the day. Other places wanted strict visiting hours, and advance notice. And the place we choose was really good

My friend mom used to work in these types of places in 90's and early 2000's and she told up alot of people were forced into incontinence. They would just need assistance to get up or to the bathroom and out of shear laziness of the employees (not even staff shortage) they were forced to wear adult diapers.

Obviously I would sign up for it while still of sound mind but that had got to be one of the criteria, least dignified ways of dying. Nobody deserves that. Frankly, your facility is probably fine for someone a little bit forgetful. Deteriorating that quickly is not common, it usually takes years unless there is a medical event like breaking a hip or other hospitalization. Your facility needs a more robust process and contract for evaluating residents to determine when they need more care. Many assisted living places are associated with care homes and residents move as they need more care.

There are so many laws in the U.S. to address these issues, but please remember: laws don't protect people; people protect people. There are different laws for nursing homes (higher bar for care) and assisted living facilities (much lower bar), and dual-licensed facilities, in some states, can decide what laws apply to them. If the facility accepts Medicare (federal health insurance for the aged and disabled) or Medicaid (state-operated health insurance for low-income and medically fragile), then additional laws can apply. The onus is almost always on the resident and their family to prove negligence or improper care, which is a costly undertaking, and often times aged parents die during the time it takes to bring suits to court or to settle. When actually charged or found in violation, it's often cheaper for the program to just pay the fines then it is to deliver the best care they can, and if their license is threatened or lost, they just move to another state and open another home.

Sami explains that companies are no longer creating products that only do one thing, so they have to reach out and collaborate with other companies that can help them create a product that does everything. He notes the example of Apple creating the Apple Watch. “The consumer isn’t just buying a watch, they are buying a multipurpose device. And Apple is not a company that’s an expert in, say, wellness, so they have to collaborate with those companies to create an offering to the end consumer,” Sami explained. “The Watch is an ecosystem product, and these ecosystem products are the driving force that are really forcing companies to collaborate. I work customer service at an international call center based in the USA. This is the absolute truth. I will go to great lengths to help and meet your wishes, NOT DEMANDS. I will also help in any way possible, but when you call, please be ready to talk to me. You would be amazed how many call in about an order and Don't know the order or invoice number they are talking about!! If they do not know that, we may go by telephone number. With many customers, we may go through 3-5 numbers before we get the one you used on your order and then go through all your orders to find the one you are speaking about. Also, I have specific policies and guidelines that I must follow. These are mostly in place to protect the customer from fraud. When I ask for information, name, address, email, etc.... I am just verifying that you are the credit card holder, not someone pretending to be you just so they can use your card. Just remember, we are human too.

I can confirm 15 years in the industry. If you are mean and rude I will 100% go out of my way to make your customer service experience suck as much as I can. However if you are nice and polite your ticket jumps the Que. pro tip if you want something from us like a discount or price drop, find out what time the phone line shuts down and ring just before. We want to go home and will give you anything in our power just to get you off the phone.

God no, please don't do this. If you call me right before the end of the day I'm going to absurdly brush you off. Tell you my manager just left and I can't get approval, tell you I'll have to look into it first, or just deny it ans get you off the phone. Want good customer service? Call between 10-2pm. Just long enough for your rep to be settled in, not so late they're burnt out and if it's a big issue enough time to work on it, get answers, and call you back before the end of day

People who are continually rude to call center/help desk employees should be forced to work the job for at least two weeks. If they don't have a coming to Jesus moment or a nervous breakdown, they are either psychopathic narcissists or alien life forms.

I used to work in a call center. (I was damn good, too.) I always enjoyed calling when I had a problem - because I know how the game is played...I find that reps don't quite know what to do when I speak to them in calm, reserved, tones and make specific demands regarding my issue - I can hear the fear through the line.

Please cover your sex toys with a condom, and be sure to change to a new condom if you're sharing with your partner/s. You can share sexually transmitted infections by sharing sex toys if they aren't covered with a fresh condom (new one for each person) and cleaned properly in between uses.

Well, on that note, I know a bit about body jewelry. They say if you have a fresh piercing, or if you're stretching your ears, you shouldn't use acrylic or silicone, as they're too porous to remain sanitary. You should use stainless steel. That would be an interesting dildo. I suppose there's also glass, or wood sealed with natural laquer.

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know If you're sitting at a blackjack table and aren't sure what play to make, ask the dealer. No, seriously. We're trained to know the official Blackjack strategy guide and are allowed to give you that information (considered common knowledge). If the dealer doesn't know it off hand, their supervisor should have a copy of it and will help you out.

Discipline yes, to some extent (although a sort of blind discipline whilst on the job only, I think we’re all fairly familiar with forces personnel reputations when “off duty”). Top tier training? I’m not sure that’s strongly associated with the armed forces, unless it’s referring only to technical training of certain physical things (equipment, fitness etc).

Apparently tech companies even alter the definition of the word “sale” to suit their particular needs. Digital Information World explains that advertisers can use bidding techniques to acquire data from tech companies without a technical “sale” taking place. “You should remember that tech companies only need to adhere to the legal definitions of various terminology, and this allows them to bend the rules a little bit and still be able to claim that they do not sell user data,” Digital Information World notes. "It is important to be cognizant of the various ways in which companies can use legalese to make it seem like they are not actually violating your privacy. This can be useful in terms of safeguarding yourself from losing control over your personal information in a day and age where privacy violations are unfortunately becoming highly commonplace all in all."

I don't cook with a lot of oil, and I don't deep fry, so maybe this is common knowledge. But I have never heard that you shouldn't dump oil down a drain.

I only heard it in the last 10 years, when I saw a video on some of the 'fatbergs' in a sewer system, but maybe that's because I wasn't cooking for myself before that. You should wipe the oil out of the pan with a paper towel and put it in the bin. I have heard of people soaking rolled oats in the pan and throwing it to the birds, but I'm not sure about the merits of it.

So when you get squashed flatter than a cockroach because a driver was working too long, you are in the care of a doctor who has been working too long. Perfect. /S

Fire Department: We worked 48 hrs on and 96 hrs off. If we were busy, 75% of the time, we didn't sleep at all or very little. Take an overtime shift and now it's 72 hrs. Lifespan post retirement is 12 yrs just because of the sleep deprivation much less the c**p we are exposed to. Wouldn't have traded it for anything. Retired and still stay up all night once a month. 40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know I work in video games. Our job is to make our game as addictive as possible so that we can make the most money out of micro-transactions. (Think mobile phone games) A lot of our game design is by marketing telling us what people will most likely buy in the game by watching data. Sure, it starts free-to-play, but to keep you playing and paying we mine data to make it more "sticky." After a while I felt like I was working for a drug dealer and quit recommending our games to people I knew. Sure, people have fun playing the games we make, but I don't want to hear later about how much money you or your kids wasted on it.

One of the reasons I'm willing to pay a one time price on a mobile game. I know the people making them need to eat too, but the micro transactions and loot boxes are just slot machines or roulette dressed in new clothes. Alternatively I'm willing to watch some ads in free games if it's not excessive, because then it's a bit like commercials on tv, but if those ads are taking up most of your gaming time, then the effin thing is not worth the trouble.

I don't mind paying for ad-free if it's a good game, nor do I mind watching ads to earn game points. What I mind is when there's no way to succeed without paying real money. My other pet peeve is all the games where a young woman with a baby is shivering in the snow, and the "player" in the ad is too stupid to pick the right things. Then to top it all off, the gameplay doesn't have anything at all to do with the cold woman. So why the ad?

Trust me, devs still want exatly that. And that’s the reason why indie games are much, more often about “returning back to golden era”. The ones that want just to monetize everything are large studios who become so greedy over the time that they are able to put microtransactions in EVERYTHING. But if you want to experience games like in the old times, there are always possibilities (try factorio, terrara, or on iphone goblin sword).

Tbh I don't get why people call in-game purchases a waste of money. Not talking about kids here that might not even know what they're doing, but when you consciously decide to pay money to get entertained - why not? That's pretty normal and the people developing and maintaining these games gotta eat and pay rent like we do.

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know Barely anyone in the state of Georgia gets an autopsy. If you wanted to kill someone over the age of 40, all you would really need to do is make sure that they had some kind of previous medical history and the body was found outside of a metropolitan area. The coroners here are only required to have a high school diploma. Some states are worse, most better.

Thank the Lord there are laws to protect us so ppl can’t go around spewing BS and get away with it. Most coroners in Georgia are doctors or have advanced degrees. They are elected. There are many laws protecting us as well. For example, anyone that dies within 24 of hospital admission is an automatic autopsy. Coroners have to mandatory training, 40 hrs annually, for high tech science and medical education. Like, blood splatter analysis. The science they use to catch criminals is amazing.

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know After working in the travel industry I can tell you that hotel room rates are often not fixed prices. If guests come to the front desk and ask the price we generally start at the high end. Most people accept this as fact and pay up. However, if a customer is hesitent or threatens to walk out we can sometimes drop the price to keep them there. Often there is a bottom line price set by the owners- we can't go any lower than that or we lose money.

Never use one of those online booking services. Just call the hotel directly and ask for a better rate or make an offer. The hotels have to pay a commission to those sites, so they'd much rather give you the deal directly and avoid the commission.

I'll use a booking site to get an idea of what hotels are in the area and kind of price range then use that info to know which hotels to call directly and book. It never hurts to shop around, especially when traveling on a budget.

My husband and I stayed at a hotel near the Colorado Sand Dunes National Park. I don't remember how much the hotel room cost, but my husband made a comment that he thought it was too much. The desk attendant asked how much we wanted to pay. My husband gave out a figure, and she said okay. It was a third off the regular room price. I have never had anything like that happen before. We literally chose our own room price.

Night auditor a long long time ago. If you come in real late, like 11pm or later, the Auditor would really like to sell the remaining rooms, if any. You can get a really good rate and the Auditor most always can change the rate to anything over the "floor" price.

This isn't exactly all accurate. As a person that has family in multiple countries, we have learned that simply, you need to shop. Sometimes a .com is cheaper than having a local call, sometimes having the local call is cheaper. Sometimes not having a reservation is cheaper... It's all apart of traveling. A little due diligence goes a long way. Remember that tipping isn't socially universal, but where it is... DO IT!!! it can open doors and experiences you didn't expect.

I used an online hotel booking app and saved 50% off the nightly rate. Every time I went to the hotel in person to try and book a room - even though they recognized me and were happy to see me - they would charge me double the online rate. Give online booking a try!

This is for urine tests or quick tests. To get a real idea of how pregnant (or not) you are, ask to do a BHCG test. That is a blood test that shows the actual amount of that hormone in your system, which doubles every day from conception to a certain point. Can't remember what that point is but hey, I'm not Google! DO NOT go to your emergency department just for a pregnancy test! That is not an emergency to them, it will p**s the ER staff off & it will cost you a fortune! This is assuming you are in America of course. Here in Australia, go to a the A&E (Accident & Emergency) in a public hospital & everything is free. But it's still not an emergency to the staff & it will p**s them off. But it will be free to p**s them off at least!

This is incorrect. I worked at a medical lab & although we did use the same type of urine tests as you can buy, the sensitivity of the test is key. It tests for hormones & the more sensitive it is to those hormones, the more expensive the test will be. So that $1 test may give you a false negative because it can't pick up the lower amounts of hormones, allowing you to think you aren't pregnant when you actually are. That's how the 'early' tests work, they are simply more sensitive to the hormones than some others. The original pregnancy tests that you could buy required you to be at least a week late before they would pick up anything!

It’s not the insurance industry way to screw you… it’s due to the billions of dollars spent treating the uninsured and those who refuse or cannot pay. Those who can afford care are charged more to make up for the losses. It was true before ACA, it was true during ACA and it’s definitely true now. Your insurance company profits less when charges for medical treatment increase….just like you.

It's not even from the store. We'd go buy ingredients from Costco. Whole Foods tries to justify you paying so much money for your meals because it's all organic and fresh ingredients but it's a lie. For once, this is actually a regulated label - it actually DOES mean something, and the products under that label ae required to meet specific growing regulations. If they do not, the they can be reported to the food standards agency or department of agriculture or what have you. This comment on organic labelling applies to the UK and USA, I cannot comment on other country regulations as I only know these.

I worked from them before. When produce is going bad, they give it to prep foods, and we made it into food that went into the cold case for a few days, and when it was going bad, we heated it up and put it out in the hot bars. The hot bars are expensive, and often pretty old by that point.

I knew a woman long time ago that was trying to get her family to eat healthy. She asked her husband if he agreed that anything she bought from whole foods was healthy and he agreed. She tripled the amount of money she was spending on food because she "perceived" it to be healthy. Crazy!

40 People Reveal “Dark Secrets” About Their Jobs That Common People Aren’t Supposed To Know In mental health, often the appearance of progress is more important than progress itself Edit: I'm *not* saying counseling or therapy don't work at all, just saying there is sometimes pressure to inflate positives to have clients stick around.

And it's not always a lie either. Much of a person's mental state is perception. If they feel they are making progress the mental state can turn from negative to positive. Which is actual progress. Do that a few hundred times and the mental pathways are reinforced. You have changed the actual structure of the brain with positive reinforcement.

As someone who lives with depression and has had therapy, plateaus happen. When I felt like I wasn't making progress, my therapist would often compare the current state to back when I started working with her, reminding me that I might not always see improvements week to week, or even over a month or two, but I was doing better than when I started. It's important to think you're making progress, because it gives you a sense of control, and hope that you can improve your situation. If you feel like nothing's changing, and that there's nothing you can do to make things better, then it's easy to give up.

Talk therapy doesn't work for everything. Sometimes with trauma, the client spends an hour a week re-hashing and talking about the trauma and then spends the next 5 days all worked up and upset, has one day of relative peace and then it starts over again.

This can only last so long and there comes a point where the humans need to be managed in a healthy way. Also, HR does not exist to benefit the worker. HR is to cover the a$$ of the company. Just fyi, one thing you can do with single-use plastic food containers is use them as 'boxes' for shipping. Like wide mouthed jars that things like peanut butter or coffee crystals come in, or sour cream tubs. Just tape the lid shut. They're sturdier and lighter than cardboard, too. I found out about this recently, and I've been trying to lowkey spread the word.

The Amazon just throws s**t away left right and centre. Also, it blows my mind how simple recycling should be but I've cleaned offices and whatnot, and it amazes me that there is no consistency in what people good in the garbage vs recycling bin. Some people literally use the bins that's clearly marked "cardboard only" for just about everything including actual garbage. Oh and a sidenote: be what most people think of as cardboard is actually classified as paper. Cereal boxes are paper but the box those boxes are shipped in is cardboard.

Corporations do not recycle. They sometimes reuse end product to lessen the front end cost but that is to benefit them. 97 percent of Solid waste is generated by business. They need to be forced to recycle but that is politically unpopular, so we continue to try to solve the garbage problem by regulation over 3 percent of the trash....If they don't, your recycling efforts are all but a drop in the bucket........ and taking away my plastic straw was as wildly pointless as wings on an elephant

Also heard later that people were complaining about bulging walls. What many people do not realize is that TVs are shipped on pallets to a store, but then to come to your house that TV is not receiving the same "white glove" service and the packaging is not made for individual shipping. TVs that make it unscathed are probably coming from a nearby distribution center so it doesn't have to travel far.

Has anyone mentioned agriculture yet? If we (I'm in the U.S.) paid our workers a salary that attracted legal immigrants and citizens, all produce/ornamentals would be priced as high as the stuff marketed as organic. A lot of farm labor is s**t work, and it's the only industry with no overtime pay requirements. 50+ hour weeks are normal. The factory farm I work at starts at sunrise with a minimum 9 hour day, working Saturdays as well. I'm a U.S. citizen with a Horticulture degree so I have it better than most of my illegal immigrant coworkers. I once spent a 10 hour day with a crew bent over in the field just to see what it was like and I had to take the next day off. I try to source all my produce and plants more ethically because of this, even though it's pricey. Edit1: I was wrong about ag being the only industry exempt from overtime. I looked it up on the Department of Labor website and they have a page listing all the exceptions (commissioned sales employees, computer professionals that make over a certain amount, etc.). It's a weird list, but economics isn't my expertise so maybe the jobs on there make more sense to someone that knows better. Edit2: Woohoo popped my gold cherry. Farming is finally paying off. Thank you kind stranger!

Your post is why my mother and MIL both supported the farmworkers union organization here in the US and I will continue to support labor rights. Everytime you eat a salad, or an apple, or a baked potato, please think about the human who picked them. They deserve a fair wage. That fair wage means that you might pay a dollar more for a pound of strawberries but those men women and teenagers deserve it.

I live in a very rural part of NY. From spring thru the end of autumn, the migrant workers are out in the fields when I drive by in the morning, and in the evening when I'm driving home. And this summer, we've had weeks and weeks of 90+ degree days with no rain. They are hard workers.

Food is priced so low people have no understanding of what it's actually worth. Of course, most people couldn't afford it if you had to pay what it cost/should have cost to produce it, because minimum wage is even lower...

Doctor here. It's practically impossible to get an incompetent colleague to lose their license unless multiple patients complain. I've come across colleagues with horrendous records, ranging from billing fraud to almost killing people (and probably killing some, indeed, we just did not know for sure). Despite all of us trying to use appropriate channels, such as discussing it with the hospital, with the licensing body, we were met with staunch resistance and refusal to even start to investigate. The only way to do it would be to basically tell a patient that the doctor had almost killed them and tell them to file a complaint, but then if that information leaked, we could be sued for defamation. It's really terrible.

A friend of mine works in a hospital testing all the blood, etc. that comes down into the lab. One time he found evidence of leukemia in a patient's blood work, but because the patient was not getting tested for that, but for something else specific, the hospital workers WERE NOT ALLOWED to tell him that he definitely had leukemia. Thankfully a nurse waiting until he left and followed him to his car to tell him to go get tested for leukemia ASAP. She could have been fired if the hospital found out she did that.

In the U.S., it is common for states to have a board or state Office of Healthcare Quality Assurance. This is the government office that monitors healthcare quality at state-licensed facilities, and it takes complaints from patients about poor quality of care or denial of care. They also have the power to investigate, and to suspend or take away licenses of healthcare providers. Hospitals and health insurance plans also typically have an Ombudsman office that assists patients with filing complaints about poor quality or denial of healthcare. You'll have to Google for your state, as there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive list at DHHS (and there should be).

They supply us with absolute c**p and then tell us to supplement the stuff out of our own paycheck. They over book us with kids every time. There was very few times the camp was planned well and I did my best with your kids, but management always blamed us for their screw ups. If you ever have management tell you we are the reason for a problem, 9 times out of 10 it is them. Just trying to let you know. Also, believe your kids if they tell you something was unsafe or weird, they are probably right.

You've met my youngest brother I see. But correct me if I'm wrong, but the youngest siblings are always the most spoiled. My little brother is nine and bites and smacks me if I don't let him in the fridge while I am or I don't want him watching an inappropriate show. Just two nights ago a caught him with a flashlight reading and when I took it away he ran to our mum's room and woke her up (she gets really cranky) she snapped at him to get out, but five minutes later I go into my room with the flashlight and he bangs on the door screaming. Then mum comes out and yells at me for taking the damn flashlight. That little s**t makes my life miserable I swear there's not a single day where he doesn't actively try to annoy me- I literally have a scar from where he bit me.

A certain telephone company with a blue globe logo doesn't actually have a billing department. You are *always* routed to Sales. The job is not to fix your billing problem, it's to upsell you. If you have a legit billing problem, you will be transferred because the rep doesn't want to deal with anyone that isn't a sale. Every time you're transferred, it's actually to the same department, just a different sales rep. Billing managers are really just Sales Managers.

It’s not just in the US, though. For example, I have known Canadians to move to the US or another country partly because their healthcare system is also deeply flawed. Yes, the healthcare may be free or low-cost, but high taxes to pay for it, long waits, plus few or no guarantees of aid following long waits- especially in emergencies- far outweigh any positives.

While I agree that hospitals up charge everything, it's not just the saline you're paying for here. It's also the bag, the tubing, the IV hookup, distribution costs of materials, paying the phlebotomist who put in the IV and the nurse who changes the bag, and likely part of costs completely unrelated to the saline.

I always shudder at what the teacher probably hears that is out of context, or is a complete misunderstanding. Things that look so bad on the surface are often innocent, or even have a funny explanation. Example, my son used to think the word "pickle" was funny. He would call all kinds of things pickle, even though they had nothing to do with pickles. First day of 1st grade, he asked who wants to see his "pickle muscle." He meant his calf muscle. He wanted to flex his calf muscle and show his friends. I was recently teaching him about the body and the muscular system came up. He just added the word "pickle" onto it. I understand how terrible it sounded and I was mortified. 🤣

I worked for all four of those restaurants you mentioned, and I gotta defend Macaroni Grill. I was a prep cook/line cook there and mostly everything was fresh and fresh made (except fried mozzarella, no one fresh makes that, I don’t care how fancy the place is). Everything was quality checked every day. Even had a small herb and veggie garden out back, )which doesn’t go for all MGs, it was just the chef’s hobby.) As for the other 3 places, yeah, obviously there’s a lot of frozen, bottled, pre-packaged stuff, it’s a chain and should be expected. However, there are some things that are made in store; sauces, dressings, dips, some appetizers and deserts , etc. Anyway, all those places get such a bad rap on their food, but while there is some crappy food, there’s also good food and that’s just how chains work

These types of comments are so misleading. Big chains deal with big crowds. Big crowds come in for reasonable prices at a full service restaurant, so, a couple things to remember: 1. Many ingredients arrive fresh daily, then they are prepped in large quantities in order to be served to large crowds in a timely manner, so they are cooked, bagged, and stored, so to save time on preparing your order, yeah, it’s microwaved, just like you might do at home. 2. If you want affordable dinners, yeah, some foods are not top brand, but that doesn’t mean the quality is diminished, and 95% of the time it’s the same stuff you buy in the store. The only *real* thing you should be worried about in any restaurant, is how lazy and apathetic the cooks or management are. This is so typical of the IT industry. In all companies I worked, security wasn't important until something broke. Then management understands that maybe it's important to listen when the it admin wants more security. The only place that wasn't the case was in our national bank. They had good security.

Any medical profession: i.e. physician, pharmacist, nurse, etc. We all consult the internet just as much as you probably do for whatever your perceived ailment may be. Yes, we go to school for an extremely long time; and yes, we are experts in our field(s). However, it is sheerly impossible for a single mind to know everything off of the top of their head in any and all realms of medicine.

If you want medical information, start with Medline or a peer-reviewed journal. If you can't find what you're looking for, ask a librarian. Google and Wikipedia are fine to start out with, but please end up at a site you know and trust.

This is why I push back politely when I need to do it. “I appreciate your concern and I don’t want to do x because…” Usually, giving a kind, well-supported rebuttal works. If you must object to what a healthcare professional of any type recommends (PCP/GP, oncologist, psychiatrist, counselor, etc.), *be respectful* of the professional as you expect him or her to respect you: as a fellow human being doing his or her best.

I don't know how many just released prisoners have the wherewithal to hire an attorney to sue the system. Most are represented by public defenders for free. But you only get a public defender if you're accused of a crime. If you are suing you need to hire an attorney on your own. Most attorneys require a retainer and/or charge hundreds of dollars an hour. So most people cannot do anything about being wronged in this way. Another way the system screws people over.

It would not be possible for an operating room to be sterile. The workers are bringing in a large number of supplies and obviously the packages have been touched by people and stored in various places. And no doubt there have been bugs on the floor, walls, and ceiling. That's why they use what is called a "sterile field". The field is a specific location that has been cleaned to the point of being considered sterile. For example, there will be at least one table or cart with the tools and supplies to be used during a surgery. The appropriate way to add an item is to pull the package open and let the item fall out of the package onto the sterile field. That way, you don’t need to touch it.

It's not uncommon for assistants and apprentices to make the art of really famous, well known, expensive artists. The artist might be very involved in the process or barely involved. They can have studios with dozens of assistants churning out all of "their" work, and then just sign their name to it. And I'm not just talking about, sculptures or art installations where assistants might be doing the grunt work. Even paintings could be barely-touched by the actual artist.

I wouldn't say diamonds are "worthless". They do have industrial uses. They are great for cutting various materials and for sharpening knives. There are also people experimenting with using diamonds in computer processors to make them faster and more energy efficient. However, diamonds would be worth about the same amount per pound as copper if the commodities market wasn't being so grossly manipulated.

Back in the 80's we were shipping software that we knew wouldn't run so that we could ship a "fixed disk" a week later after we had sorted stuff. It's always been a time pressure thing. Beta testing was a neat buzz word for CS classes. What has changed is that we used to actually have support people who listened to bug reports and passed them on to the developers.

They have a tiny little container that they must use and spread the fragments over the bread. Tomatoes or cucumbers? One later, no overlap and reaches neither end. HOWEVER: if you are a regular customer and chat with them and are nice about it they will fill up your sandwich much better! If you leave a review (via the register receipt) that comments about the poor amount on your sandwich you will get more the next time. Be sure to be effusive on your next review when they make you a better sandwich. Subway is now my place!

You have to remember that insurance is not in the business of paying claims, they are in the business of refusing claims. They only make money when they don't pay out, so that is the default setting. When you understand the business model you can start to work their system and get the pay out you need, but first you have to know that they are never on your side.

Really, if we want these to be correctly dismantled and sanitized, don’t make the service staff responsible for it. Yes, they should take the taps off the soda machine, soak them, and wipe down the machine, but that’s it. Any deep cleaning should be maintained by a separate entity. Professionals whose sole purpose is to clean and maintain the machines at scheduled intervals. It’s beyond me that restaurants expect overworked servers, who are making way below minimum wage while not serving tables, to actually be meticulous and caring enough to do the job correctly. This is ridiculous imo. The Front of the house staff is there to sell the food, not deep clean the place. Daily, basic maintenance? Yes, but not servicing machines, furniture, or any other equipment, that is wildly inappropriate

Jeweler here- we use spit to set diamonds. Not as an actual adhesive, but to pick up and move the diamond into the setting. It sounds gross, but trying to move a small diamond with a pair of tweezers often results in the diamond flying across the room and into the bottomless pit that is a jewelry shop floor. So, yea- we lick and stick. Don't worry, there's a vigorous cleaning process at the end!

Ex personal trainer. Your problem is your diet. That's it. You're eating too much. I can work you three hours a day, six days a week, but if you keep eating that c**p "what do I feel like eating?" diet you're going to be as fat as the first day you walked into my office. You don't need a personal trainer, you need a psychologist or hypnotherapist and a dietitian.

BS Garbage! I have a step-daughter who eats a carefully managed (by dietician) primarily vegetarian diet, rides bike everywhere, gets proper sleep, and after years would still be considered morbidly obese. She has summited Kilimanjaro and recently spent 3 days hiking Columbia icefield. Some people just lost the genetic lottery and their body accumulates and holds excess. When I see/hear some "fitness expert" spew c**p like this, I seriously consider responding with a hammer to their skulls.

Please don't tell people they are eating too much when you don't know how much they eat. Don't just assume someone being overweight means excessive eating or unhealthy eating. This post is the exact sort of reason why I'm on the verge (or maybe have an undiagnosed ED), do not tell people to stop eating.

Accounting. That the appearance of everything is fine is more important than is everything actually fine. Financial statement sign offs by accountants are becoming more like rubber stamps. Accountants are blessing financial statements that haven't been properly vetted because of cost constraints engulfing the industry. It's only a matter of time before the next Enron/accounting scandal.

I came out of the profession a number of years ago. The accounts I produced no longer said 'Here's my report on your finances, produced by me' to the client, but more 'Here's a report, but YOUR responsible if it's wrong'. I found the profession was more interested in silly things (is this a capital 'v' in Motor Vehicle?) than on the what we were doing. Just like HMRC - they went from experienced (and respected) people to Uni grad robots to just voices on the end of phone line. Computers churn out endless rubbish which streams of anonymous 20 year olds seem to not understand (or worse - give a damn about). I've seen endless instances where the system has gone wrong and people have been stonewalled with the ol' "computer says" excuse. As always the little people suffer whilst the big boys (Big Corp and Big Finance) get away with blue murder.

I am a vegetarian. At places where I can see my food being prepared I ask for (and get) a clean knife. Where I can't see, like in a pizza place or when I've ordered by phone, I request my item NOT BE CUT. You will not get a polluted knife and you're sure to get a fresh item. I will not eat anything that might have been touched by meat. This goes for any food that goes on the same grill as meat - just won't eat those things. I did go to a Japanese restaurant where they prepare your food at the table. I explained my problem - everyone else at the table had their food prepared - and he brought out totally cleaned cookware and prepared my food especially for me. He got an awesome tip that night !

I suppose the work I do doesn't necessarily have a direct consumer, but it is still worth mentioning. I have done various forms of biomedical research for the past 4 years or so. My current gig is in a cancer research facility at a university, and I have met a host of interesting characters (I work with medical doctors, PhDs, scientists with master's degrees, etc). Research in academic institutions is extremely cutthroat. There is less and less grant money available. If you don't get your grant, you can't fund your research, and people lose their jobs. The thing that baffles me is that many PhDs and MDs who are in charge of these projects care less about the research and more about getting their names on a paper. For some, it is all about image. People will screw each other over to ensure they get the grant first and they publish their data first. It is very political. On the upside, I work with many people who are genuinely passionate about the work that they do. TL;DR - Some of the higher-up doctors and scientists don't care about the diseases they research as much as they care about getting recognition and praise. EDIT: changed notoriety to recognition and praise because words are hard sometimes

In the tanning industry, if we don't clean the bed properly after the previous customer, you can get shingles. If we walk into the room and 10 seconds later walk out, your tanning bed is NOT clean! It takes two solid minutes to properly clean any room. Bed, chair, shelf and door handle. If you tan in a salon that 'sanitizes' its goggles for you to use, they are not sanitary! It takes 5 HOURS in that solution to get rid of any and all bacteria from the previous set of eyes.

We talk about our students because we love them - at their best and at their worst. Their parents talk about them for the same reason. And when a teacher complains about a student to the kid's other teachers, he is likely looking for helpful suggestions, not just venting. (Though venting is good, too.)

Not really my profession anymore, or a "profession" at all, but I used to work the production line at the Swiss Colony bakery. For those who aren't familiar, it's basically mail-order "gourmet" food. Quality control in that factory was nil. 75% of the workers had little to no training. When promoters came through to do a video, they had to bring in extra people to make it look busy. They also had to scrape a couple foot-tall mounds of chocolate off the floor, sweep up the dead bugs, and very carefully not pan up to show where the ceiling had been on fire. Anything you order from them has a good chance of being damaged, tainted, or "modified".

I remember there was a Swiss Colony store in the mall where I grew up. It was right at one of the entrances/exits. I always liked to go in and leave that way because it just smelled amazing. I loved that place and purchased occasionally from them.

Legacy programmer here! All of the debt from your houses, and your parents' and landlords' houses, and increasingly all of your credit card, consumer and student loan debt are ALL being processed on 24 hour cycles on a system backbone that was written well before I was born. And I'm OLD (in Reddit terms). I work in mortgage servicing and tinker with the spiderwebs that hold up the economy as we know it. It's pretty complex, because everything runs on spit and promises and equal parts sunshine and darkness. We find ways to squeeze tiny bits of performance improvements out of an impossible system so that we can immediately put more load on it. If you want to guarantee yourself years of work in an environment you'll probably hate, learn to code in COBOL. Most of the people in my dept are within a decade of retirement, if they live that long. Our company pays college kids to learn on the job now because there are no new COBOL programmers. I hate it. It's a chore to get up and go in every day. It's my dream job and I'm lucky to have it.

But they've always kept my sister. They simply can't afford to lose her. She was working from home decades before the Pandemic. (She loves being in pajamas 24/7. And they're pajamas with feet.)

I work in an advertising agency. A big one. When we get close to the Cannes advertising awards season there's a sudden interest in world issues or minorities, topics that usually grab the judge's attention. There are also quite a few brands that pump money into "research" in order to come up with some half assed story (usually a short film) on how their brand is helping said minorities or contributing to a worthy cause etc etc. This is obviously all c**p, and all they want is the award and to be in the press, which automatically gains the advertising agency more exposure and the brand a lot of free advertising too. The research bit? A script that has been completely approved client-side and we have to go by religiously. Even if that means working overtime, which we obviously don't get payed for.

That's the part of the lab that gets anything removed from a person: from warts and moles all the way to whole colons and legs, etc. We have rooms where the whole specimens are viewed and dissected. If it's one of those labels that says "No nitrites* *except those naturally occurring in the celery juice", and you're adding celery juice, then that is the only way that is legal. Lots of meat products have celery juice added, and nitrites are naturally in it. If it doesn't have that second half, or naturally occurring nitrites are not mentioned at all, and you're adding it, then it's not. It is required to be mentioned by law.

Flight attendant here. The toilet is cleaned more often than your seat. I've watched people change their baby on the tray table on one flight then watch someone spread their lunch on it the next flight. Your flight crew gets paid at 2 different pay rates. The first is "flight time". This the higher of the two but we only get this rate when the plane door is closed. When the door is open (boarding, deplaning, etc.) We get our per diem, typically less than $2/hr. This is why we might seem a little pushy if you're taking too long to sit down. This is also why we might board everyone and push off the gate knowing there's going to be a delay. All airlines are rated, among many things, D:0, A:14 and ACF. D:0- On time departure. As long as our doors are closed by the departure time we get the grade. Average for most airlines is 70-80% on time departures. A:14- On time arrival. This one is a little misleading. The FAA considers us on time as long as we get to the gate no later than 14 mins past the scheduled arrival time. 80-90% on time arrivals. ACF: Adjusted Completion. Basically how many scheduled fights did we actually compete. 99.5-100% fights completed.

MVNOs are smaller carriers that borrow bigger carriers' signal, but that doesn't mean they have the same reception and coverage as the bigger carriers. First off, they don't have access to any of the bigger carriers' roaming network so you're screwed if you're in a rural area. Even in areas covered by the big carrier, the signal and coverage is still worse than the bigger carrier. Also, MVNOs have a data speed limit and are capped at around 6Mbps down. But if you walk into a Metro PCS or Cricket store, they'll just tell you they use the T-mobile/AT&T network and not mention any of the above.

This is the downside to tightening security, it can actually completely negate it because people are lazy. No, no there is not. That rumor started around 2010 for political reasons, and is absolutely not based in any fact. Even in Texas, any private sale has to go through a license FFL dealer, to ensure the various government agencies can track it. And even private sales include a background check for the recipient.

I work for Charter Spectrum. If you want to get your bill reduced it's simple, actually. You just have to call in and tell us you're disconnecting due to high prices. If you don't say you want to disconnect, there's nothing that can be done to help you. We're not supposed to suggest this to customers because the company doesn't really want them to save money. We have a retention dept. that literally gets paid to RETAIN people. Don't call billing and ask for a deal, get right to the retention department. They can help you get a lower bill.

I taught at a private school for incredibly 'academically slow' children with incredibly rich parents. Teachers were not permitted to make any contact with parents- no notes, phone calls, or conferences. Because of this tightly enforced policy, kids never did homework, misbehaved, (I was the FIFTH teacher my class had that year - last teacher was pregnant and had been kicked in the stomach!) and parents couldn't ask about any of their concerns. I gave every kid my phone number and they called me each night to tell me when they finished their homework to see what order they'd finished in! Of course most parents ended up with my phone number. Communication problem over!
