The Quirky Side of Walmart
The internet is notorious for miscellaneous content. One such example is the everlasting phenomenon known as “People of Walmart.” Ever since the original website by the same name appeared sometime around 2009, it has become a bona fide repository of Americana, the un-airbrushed view of real people and genuine characters who don’t ever end up on magazine covers.
But they sometimes make headlines. Quoting this decade-old NPR opinion piece “Is Walmart A Magnet For American Mayhem?” the dispatches from the field in 2011 followed: “A customer was nabbed by police for sampling raw meat at a Walmart in Pennsylvania. A woman said she had an encounter with a bat at a Walmart in Minnesota. A family of five was living in a car at a Walmart in Florida. A girl had a run-in with a monkey at a Walmart in Missouri. A man was caught in flagrante delicto at a Walmart in Louisiana. And that is just in the past few weeks.” You can see how Walmart became a sort of Wonderland calling to the adventurous spirits.

I Wish We Had Walmarts In Europe
Walmart destroys every small business in a 20 mile radius. This pic is cute but the story behind is walmart employees are so underpaid, the plants in the garden section would die without intervention.
Load More Replies...WalMarts are terrible places with abysmal working conditions and they choke local economies and are just bad for everyone and everything. You do not want them in Europe.
When I read the first words 'I lost my dad at walmart...' I think of something tragic happened 😂
They tried to establish the brand in Germany but found out that their hiring tactics, management style and questionable quality products didn't fly in a highly unionized, mostly well infrastructured (when it comes to discounters ) country and almost immediately tanked.
Grumpy german customers felt annoyed by being happoly greeted when entering the shop and grumpy german employees refused to sing happy songs before work. Very funny!
Load More Replies...You really don't want Walmart. They pay their employees really low wages, and treat them pretty badly, according to what I've heard. It's the store we go to when there aren't any other options.
This is all true. Even those of us who wont' shop at Walmart for ethical reasons end up paying for it - via our tax money going to public subsidies to badly paid workers. US taxpayers are helping the Waltons be billionaires and terrible employers. https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/walmart-mcdonalds-largest-employers-snap-medicaid-recipients
Load More Replies...LOL That's hilarious. I get it too because I worked at Walmart in my early 20's - they do NOT take care of the plants!
Please - whatever you do, do NOT allow Walmart in Europe. They destroy every other small business around them. They get everything supercheap from China, then sell it super cheap. If you are desperately poor, that might be good, but because of the prices, they undersell every other business and put them out of business within a year. Just - DON'T!
We have ASDA in the UK, which to be honest, is just as bad and it's owned by Walmart...
That's so awesome!! I would be proud if my dad did that, I think its really nice.
walmart sucks, but boy does it make life easier sometimes. we were so happy when one opened right up the road from us, it meant we didn't have to make enormous shopping trips every two weeks when in the closest city for other reasons.
This reminds me so much of the "Don't turn into your parents" insurance commercials from Progressive
You can do that?! Home Depot and Lowes needs volunteers to water their plants.
I think that there is a WalMart in Germany. Fortunately, all employers in the EU pay their employees a living wage, health insurance, get paid holidays and vacation days and time off after the birth of a baby - Mother and sometimes the father. I refuse to shop in WalMart when we visit famliy. It's either Target or Costco.
Seems like customers are the ONLY people willing to water ANY of the poor, parched plants at Walmart… I’ve done it myself on several occasions! Many Walmart Garden Centers are thirsty wastelands!
there are enough mega-marts putting family owned small business out of business here already...from Aldi, Lidl, to OBI and TOOM. cant even find a decent butcher or baker anymore. f**k walmart.
I still think they leave the plants dry so that people will come along, see their plight and buy them to rescue them.
You wish you had a monstrous corporate conglomerate that will destroy every downtown area on your continent, eliminate millions of jobs, and force the ignorant into indentured servitude without a living wage or health care? Consider Nuclear Armageddon instead. It's horrible, but doesn't last as long as Walmart.
The Waltons, owners of Wal-Mart, are parasites on the people of the United States. Citizens pay their employees wages by supplementing Wal-Mart's substandard wages. We need to claw back all the billions that the Waltons have stolen and put them to work in the fields, picking vegetables for the rest of their and their children's lives.
"I got my dad at Walmart'. What?? Careless reading and a double-take.
We have it in the UK, but it's called ASDA, which they bought (was originally Associated Dairies)
Based on the things I’ve heard about American employees rights, I wonder if walmart could adapt to European countries. In my country we have 164 weekdays of paid parental leave (shared by mom and dad) and one parent can be a stay at home parent with a child under 3 years old without losing their job. And almost everyone is a part of a union.
Amazing how many times I've seen this picture. He must have hundreds of children
Or a couple of really careless offspring? They keep losing him.
Load More Replies...They never water the plants at the one near me and most of the plants are just dead
I know this thread has turned to anti Wal-Mart (no problem)_but there was an old saying "give a guy a hose " ....hint : extension
You can find these in Bauhaus, Obi, Hornbach in Europe... But, no, we do not have Walmart...
We had it in Germany. Wasn't very nice. And closed after 2 years or so. REAL afterwards, I think.
The Walmart Effect—The Other Side of The Coin
The phenomenon was also spotted by The Wall Street Journal, where Miguel Bustillo explained it in “Today’s Special at Wal-Mart: Something Weird”: “Almost any imaginable aspect of American life can and does take place inside Wal-Mart stores, from births to marriages to deaths. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin once officiated a wedding at the Wal-Mart in her hometown of Wasilla.”
“People Of Walmart” proved to be excellent entertainment for the internet and social media. Today, more than ten years after it emerged, the fascination with it is stronger than ever. Created around the time the phenomenon occurred, the subreddit People Of Walmart follows the legacy of many online accounts and groups, and websites dedicated to the weird, wholesome, and unique shoppers spotted in the hypermarket.

Why is “People of Walmart” Popular?
Bored Panda reached out to Lina Survila, co-founder of The Joy Of, who shared some thoughts about the root of our fascination with the People of Walmart. “Life happens in the weirdest places. People have a history of documenting things that don't make sense or make us gasp every time. Not long ago, people shared some unusual happenings that might confirm UFOs’ existence, think of crazy happenings in the sky or their backyard,” she said.
“Today, simple things raise so many questions, and people are drawn to document them. Well, the Walmart people project captures perfect moments that amaze, scare, or intrigue others,” Lina said. “It’s so appealing to watch other people and make backstories about how they ended up in the craziest situations. And a shopping store is a perfect place to do that.”

Just Another Day At Walmart
Why Are Walmart Shoppers So Strange?
By looking at the pictures of a bunch of unusual and intriguing people spotted in Walmart, in our minds, we aim to articulate what we see and find reasons why. Lina argues that “we let our imagination run wild when we see an unusual situation and more often create an unbelievable story about ‘what the hell just happened here.’” It’s all part of the game, and getting obsessed is easy.

Does Walmart Have Fake Shoppers?
It’s easy to think that all these weirdos and wholesome people are paid actors. After all, any marketing is good for such a powerful company. However, the majority of weird Walmart shoppers are as real as any other person. Every Walmart shopper meme you see is based on a real person.

How Many Shoppers Does Walmart Have?
With around 2 million workers, Walmart shoppers reach millions in numbers. How much, to be precise? According to Demandsage, about 37 million customers visit Walmart shops worldwide daily. That’s 230 million weekly. With so many different individuals coming in, it’s no wonder how so many Walmart pics of shoppers became popular and memorable.

Further proof that the USA is a fictitious holographic projection created by Canada to keep the rest of the world at a reasonable distance.
For those assuming this is just the US: WalMart is *international*. You may have one nearer than you think. (US, Mexico, UK, China, etc. They use different company name in African countries (Game Foodco, CBW, and Builders Warehous) . They're also found across South America. Creepy but true. They're also in *Canada* ---- bought out Woolco.
As a majority shareholder in Massmart. Definitely don't find these people in Builders or Makro.
Load More Replies...Where the hell do they get this crap? There are two Walmart Supercenters in my town, one on the east side and one on the west, and while you will see the occasional morbidly obese scooter babe without whom it simply wouldn't be Walmart, I guarantee you'll never *ever* see anything like most of these.
Me either and I go to Walmart almost every weekend for supplies. Never have I ever seen this type of stuff in any of the 3 supercenters I live near.
Load More Replies...It's 2022. We really need to stop making fun of people for how they dress. Cloth is cloth. We're all jaded by the internet, so it's not even interesting at this point. I mean, it's basically the apocalypse. If people want to wear a full Elizabethan cloak and a string bikini, let them be.
Walmart tried to get a foot into the retail door here in Germany some year back. The failed. Kinda makes me proud a bit
For some reason, when showing the USA, only the extreme people are used to represent. I'm not a regular Walmart shopper due to my opinion on better quality food found in other stores, but this isn't the norm.
Problem is it's not different at Piggy wiggle, dollar store/tree etc., ethnic shops (since you don't respect the owner and they're in the hood, liquor shops, CVS, Kmart...at least.
Load More Replies...I didn't take a picture. But I worked at one for a long time in Portland Oregon. Best one i saw was stripper with a cat tail butt plug. I couldn't even. 😹
Walmart seems wild! Shops here in Europe are so boring and normal. But I guess I should be glad about that.
Be very very glad. Walmart is, well, quite a soul draining place. Did one christmas season there for gift money- never ever again. Enjoy boring and normal along with knowing the people working are making at least a livable wage 💖
Load More Replies...My husband and I only go to Walmart when we need to have a fight. That place gives us anxiety.
Walmart is owned by a mulimillionaire family, pays their employees pretty much bugger all, even had a food drive -- which went to their poor employees. I would think this is way more important an issue than how some of its customers !ook.
There are eccentric persons everywhere and they're the ones who obviously get attention. The media loves to sensationalize and exploit our "special" people because the bottom line is money. These people mean no harm and are just living their lives. America's has always had a tradition that instead of hiding our crazy Aunt Sarah" or our cousin Billy away somewhere, we just invite them down into the room to meet company. Our watching movies, going to the theater and museums, reading good books and caring for children or aging parents won't get you to open a webpage, will it? It's the eccentric individuals that are noticed.
