There's an old saying that tells us, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Its exact origin is unknown, but an early version of the phrase appeared in print in English in 1546.
The words refer to the art of determining the age of horses by inspecting their mouth, which, even though it's a tricky task, can be done to a considerable degree of accuracy.
So it's a poetic way of reminding us to be grateful for our presents. But the subreddit 'Choosing Beggars' can also illustrate this basic act of human decency. And it does that by showcasing everyone who can't — or, for some reason, won't — express gratitude.
So join us as we explore the depths of this online community in search of entitled people complaining about free stuff. Believe me, simply witnessing their ridiculous behavior should be enough to once and for all remember the importance of a plain "thank you." Even if we don't mean it, at least it helps us to avoid looking like entitled brats.

Choosing Beggars Are Expecting More From Free Movie Showings
It is a lot! That'd cost probably £100 in a normal movie theater!
Load More Replies...You have to just ignore entitled people. Don’t give them your time or energy
This person is awesome! Free popcorn, beer, and a movie, wow! Pack any other snacks you want and bring it with you.
The urge to punch these people would probably be more than I could overcome.
'Some people expect a lot' are the same people that never offer to help others, contribute to the common good, say thank you or leave a tip. Please don't let them override your better instincts. What you offered your community was thoughtful and generous and sounded like a lot of fun!
Yes, I can think of plenty of people like that, who moan about everything but would never get up off their asses for anyone, or offer to help. They are the worst!!

I Was Giving Away A Free Dishwasher On Craigslist And Caught One In The Wild!
Ew. I immediately decline on these deals. I was wanting to buy a game off a lady who was selling it on Facebook marketplace for $15. I don't have a car but I have no issues taking a bus to meet people at a Tims or somewhere else, usually meeting up at a place they're needing to go anyways. So, this lady said she could meet up in a popular area she was going to be in and set a day and time, about 2 bus rides for me. (She knew what area I live in and that I took the bus.) She drove a car. About an hour later she pms saying she wants an extra $5 for the trouble of using gas and her time. ...Oo. I made up an excuse to decline the sale. I know it's only $5 more, but it's the principle. Just her tone put me off.
I've heard that was a thing. Get someone to met then bump up the price to try and get more money. Only dirty dealing turd burglers try that.
Load More Replies...The buyer was trying to get some more free stuff along with the thing OP was originally giving away, so OP responded saying they’d take away half of the price. since the price is $0/free, that doesn’t do anything and is a sarcastic and funny comment.
Load More Replies...The sense of entitlement is strong with these folks. They clearly believe that the world owes them without giving anything in return.
Entitled people have a tendency to adopt goals based around their own self-image, often leading them into conflict with others.
While they may be able to put up an exterior of being nice and well-mannered on the outside, research shows that it's all just for show; deep down inside this is usually not how they truly feel about themselves or other individuals around them.
Yes Gary. I Will Pay You $25 To Pick Up An Item I’m Giving You That You Want For Free
What delusional world was this guy daydreaming in? Like, Seriously?!... "Bruh, I Will straight Reach Across this Web and Slap the Internet right off of Your Entitled A**!"
This is where you agree to their demand, give them wrong address and let them waste their gas and learn a much needed lesson. They get tough love, you get a giggle, it's win win.
Could some of these ingrates be trolls just going around harassing people?
I like the answwer, though. Polite but drastic enough to show the person how far out they are.
It's Free Pool
Word. We moved to a neighborhood that although it's "small" as in number of houses, the lots are big (between 2-4 acres) so that everyone is spread out a good distance from the each other. We had a pool installed in the atrium so it's screened in (there are lots of trees around and we didn't want to constantly deal with leaves) but it's still "outside." It wasn't uncommon to hear splashing and walk out to find a neighbor kid or two. When I asked what they were doing they would say "oh it's fine, our parents said we could come over." WTF?!? Yes, we did invite them over ONE TIME and apparently this translated to "we are totally cool with your kids just walking in our house to use our pool." When we put a lock on the fence, the little b*stards complained to their parents, who then complained to us. It is unfathomable that we live in a world where I have to explain to a grown-@ss adult that their child is not entitled to swim in our pool and still have them get pissy.
I would go over to their house and have a party in the yard with a few people and see how they like it.
Load More Replies...Wtf. What kind of selfishness is this? And also what country is this? Because I am fairly certain if you were to just rock up at my or my neighbours houses wearing swimmers if shut the door in your face. (If you came uninvited and expected us to cater to your every need)
This neighborhood pool thing is always not going to end well, plus too much liabilities
My mom always insisted that if we had any friends over to swim, they MUST, with zero exception, have a parent/guardian with them. My parents weren't willing to take on responsibility for someone else's kids. I cringe whenever I hear of pool owners NOT doing that. We're talking about kids' lives here.
If I had a pool, I would not share it except family and close friends who I can rely on showeirng before they go in. Sorry, but it's not jsut a matter of insurance but also hygiene.

Load More Replies...One study even suggests that entitlement can be dangerous. In 2018, researchers from Case Western Reserve University found that entitled people are more likely to experience chronic disappointment, unmet expectations, and a self-reinforcing cycle of behavior which puts them at risk for harm psychologically or socially.
Think of it like this: when someone thinks of themselves as superior, anything that challenges their worldview is met with defensiveness and anger. This creates a vicious cycle: the more they are challenged by society's limitations, the angrier they become at these "injustices."
Restaurant Gives Out Free Candy Canes, People Are Mad They Aren’t Organic
I saw a similar thing when we had a promotion at our store and gave away free cups of vanilla bean ice cream from a local place. The number of parents who complained because we didn't have chocolate/strawberry/bubblegum/whatever flavor their wittle precious wanted was higher than the number of parents/customers who said "Ooh, high quality free ice cream? Thank you!" That's before we got to the ones complaining that they/their kids are lactose intolerant and we should have something for them, too, because it wasn't fair. That was the last community promotion we had, because people are selfish jerks.
I dont know what an organic candy cane is made of, but I would think sugar would be an organic ingredient. I mean, its probably 90% sugar with a bit of color and flavour, right?
Oh c’mon. Back in the 70’s we ate candy with red dye #5 and we are still alive. But then we didn’t get “treats” all the time like kids do now.
WhyTF would you need organic candy canes though?! This is like the morons who only eat gluten free even though that don't have deliac or any other condition where that would be medically required. GLLUTEN FREE IS NOT A DIET NOR IS IT HEALTHIER.

However, social psychologist Jane Adams highlighted that every now and then we mistake entitlement for a sense of self-confidence projected by competent, assured, often charismatic others.
And sometimes, a bit of a fleeting, situational rush of entitlement might even be a good thing. "It can increase creativity and lead to novel, unusual solutions to problems, the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that organizations and employers encourage," Adams pointed out in Psychology Today.

"But he's a BOY!" Yeah, and you recognized that despite his pink shirt, so what's your point, lady?
This needs to be so much higher up!!!!!! I have a Barbie tshirt that my partner rocks like nobody's business. It's not even just a Barbie tee, it's a black Barbie and it says "Soul Sista'" 😁 (calm down, I'm biracial and think it looks adorable on my pale British bf) It's pink and has a rainbow and glitter on it, but it's also soft & comfy from being old and washed a lot, which is why it was pilfered. "Pejoratively labeling an individual or a generation as entitled sometimes reveals more about us than it does about them," Adams continued. "Our unwillingness to recognize another's meritorious worth or hard-earned success, which indicates how often we think with our beliefs rather than about them."
The social psychologist said that a good example of this is how Hillary Clinton was viewed as entitled when she ran for political office, but not when she was actually in it.

Maybe this lady got confused between iPhone 5 battery issues of fast draining, shutting down for no apparent reason, getting a bit too hot, and slow charging; all of which can be managed. And the Samsung battery issues where they spontaneously combusted. Nowadays, I would think twice about a free Samsung of a certain age being somewhat reluctant to set my house or car on fire. < This post is intended to be humorous with a grain of truth.
All those phones with the spontaneously combusting batteries have probably long since combusted! 🤣🤣🤣

I havent heard of anyone judging someone's phone since it was cool to have a flip phone, lolol, and this sounds exactly why people won't accept something a bit older
Frankly, I've never understood the whole iPhone thing. I'm happy to have an android that's paid for.

Researchers at Harvard and Cornell who studied 99 undergraduates and 98 MBA candidates found that entitled people don't follow instructions, because they see them as unfair.
"They would rather take a loss themselves than agree to something unfair," said the authors, who correlated high scores on entitlement measurements with difficulty complying with the 'rules' of the experimental task. Attempting to understand why students ignored them (selfishness, control, or punishment), they found that fairness was the primary reason.

I have bad (or possibly good) news for you. If the requirement is that a person is going to purchase something using legal tender (money) then the buyer and seller have entered into a business contract. No matter how fleeting it is. As soon as money is involved, there’s a plethora of laws that apply. Stop assuming you are “nothing more than a regular person”, when offering whatever-the-heck for a “small” amount of money. As soon as legal tender is involved you have become a business and are subject to the laws of business.

Entitled people want to be different from others. But just as frequently they come across as indifferent to others. That's why they often provoke such negative responses in those they encounter, especially those they don't personally know.
If you suspect that you might also be acting like a spoiled brat sometimes, there are things you can do to overcome it:
- Recognize the feeling of entitlement. Refuse to let it impact your life. If you have a hard time recognizing the feeling, think about other times when you felt entitled and then notice how much that feeling resembles what you're feeling now.
- Understand that you are not entitled to anything. Unfortunately, the world does not owe you anything. Life is unfair and it's your job to make the best of what you get in life, not to complain about what you deserve but don't have.

- Find ways to help others without expecting anything in return. How can you serve others without expecting anything in return? Simple: volunteer your time. If you want something in return for your services, consider that what you're getting is "happiness" from knowing that you have helped those less fortunate than yourself.
- Learn the difference between needs and wants. People with a sense of entitlement have a problem distinguishing between needs and wants. This makes it very difficult to make healthy, sound decisions since you constantly want more than you need. Instead, focus on what you truly need in life and cut out what you simply want.

This seems to be a theme where people want even more for free if they have to “go out of their way” to pick it up. How horrible for them.
- Focus on what's in your control rather than what isn't. You can only control your own thoughts, feelings, actions, and responses. Stop focusing on what other people are doing or how they are responding to situations. Instead, focus on changing the things that you have some influence over in your life.
- Practice gratitude for everything good in your life, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem at the time. Consider everything you have in your life right now: a home, family or friends, good health, etc. Take a moment to be grateful for everything that you have and realize that there are a lot of people out there who would love to trade places with you.

Popular Supermarket Creates A Scheme That Will Help Children From Deprived Backgrounds Learn To Cook A Meal They'll Enjoy, For Free. Apparently That's Not Good Enough For Some People?
Why not donate healthy food yourself? At least they tried to actually make a difference
Exactly - if you’re starving and need food, a pizza will keep you alive. If you’re just hungry, a pizza will fill you up. If you’re hungry and privileged enough to pick and choose your food based on nutritional content - then you don’t need the pizza and don’t need to shame others for eating the pizza or giving away the pizza. If people have nothing to give but pizza (or are only willing to give away pizza) then let them give away pizza. If someone wants to give away pizza just for the heck of it then let them give away pizza just for the heck of it. Nothing to complain about here! Don’t want free pizza? Don’t take free pizza :) Let the less fortunate have free pizza and shut up about it.
Load More Replies...Pizza is a perfectly healthy option, especially with the fresh toppings they're showing.
The sad thing is, these commenters are so clueless, they don't realize these companies are donating what they already SELL (pizza, coffee, whatever). Your stupid post about what they SHOULD be giving away has nothing to do with the donor's product or service.
Home made Pizza can be healthier than what you often buy a take aways etc. Also it can feed a number of people. Some kids in the UK only have one substantial meal during the day, and that is from the school, as they live on or below the poverty line. Good on this store for offering this.
What's wrong with pizza? Healthier, than an average McD. hamburger. In fact, it's an open sandwich, with a very thin bread-loaf.
Pizza is not unhealthy. it's bread, tomatoesauce and cheese. You can add a salad and some protein to have a wellrounded meal, but in itself pizza is perfectly fine.
What’s wrong with pizza? With a salad it can be a balanced meal. Besides it’s an easy thing to teach a kid how to make and get them started in the kitchen.
- Think about how your sense of entitlement is affecting other people in your life. How have other people been affected by your sense of entitlement? Have you unintentionally made them feel guilty or resentful because they didn't live up to your expectations? If so, remember that other people have their own lives to live and their own feelings. A person's actions toward you aren't necessarily directly tied to how much you mean to them.
- Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself because nobody else will do it for you. It might seem counterintuitive, but one way out of self-entitlement is to be kinder to yourself. When you are feeling entitled, it can be difficult or impossible for you to take care of your own needs. Instead, you might fall into a place of self-neglect because you are expecting others to take care of you.
Following these steps might not entirely cure your sense of entitlement, but they should reduce it to a point where you won't be complaining to people who want to give you free gifts.

She bought groceries for one friend and another is asking. Clearly people are taking advantage of her. This one is even worse. I have a list. Bring the stuff over and I'll pick through for what's good enough.
No More Free Lunch? Let's Boycott

Why are the employees entitled? I doubt the owner pays the cost of the "free" lunch from his profits.

I think that's pretty accurate. I work in a restaurant and I've been yelled at by a few people when my boss ended the 2 for 1 pizza deal on Sundays, so I could imagine 'horror'. I wonder the reason why the employees had a strike over the deal.

Your Free Wood Is Too Big!
Sometime ago we at home had wood leftover from building but good to go in the furnace. My husband offered it to a friend for free and he was happy about if. After he didn't pick it up for about a week, my busband asked why and he wanted us to deliver it to him. My busband's response was Do you want me to make a fire for you too? That wood went to someone else after that
Not wood, but I picked up a load of unwanted books for a friend's child from where I work (asked her if she wanted them first), then drove around like an idiot with all this dead weight in the boot for 6 months, until I copped onto myself and left them on top of the recycling bins near my local school, where no doubt somebody picked them up as they vanished in a couple of days. Still haven't heard from her about collection, and it's been almost a year. FFS!
Load More Replies...My husband gets those rounds from tree services, all it costs him is gas. It's a lot of effort unloading and cutting, but it's FREE. For the split wood these CBs want, it's like $400 a cord. Firewood-6...2788ea.jpg
Yeah, that's...not really firewood, so much as *potential* firewood, for someone with a chainsaw or log-splitter. But it's pretty obvious that the person who posted the ad isn't going to split it for you--they just want to get rid of it! It's a good deal for someone who already has a chainsaw or log splitter; if you don't, you are not the target audience for the ad.
I would love to take some free wood like this. It's great for natural playgrounds. Jeez. I'd be grateful
You're Not Giving Away Enough Free Stuff
Like...do these people NOT realize they didn't market it to you SPECIFICALLY? All these people act like the seller just DM'd them with an unsolicited offer instead of, ya know...posting it where literally anyone in the world with internet access could see it being given away. (I called them the seller despite them giving something away free bc Idk what else to call them. Freers? Wastenotters? Ooh I like that one. Wastenotters.)
This is literally why I just put stuff in the curb and let the flea market people come take it. They never complain. Had an appliance installer ask about some chairs we had in the garage. Said he could have them. A week later he calls wants them delivered to his house cause he can’t put personal items in his truck. They’ll be on the street trash day, first come, first serve.
This is by my house! Literally there last night lol. I didn't get any shelves either.
Protip: You can set the radius so the free stuff that your search finds are close enough.
Maybe they should offer to let them go shopping in their house for stuff they might like? Ha! Just kidding!
Are these people those who collect free stuff for their garage sales? I don't get it, seriously, I don't understand it. What do they want the person to do? Are they supposed to guess at what that particular human might consider worth coming to get the shelves? "Um, I have some folding tables? Does that sweeten the free pot? No? How 'bout an area rug?"
Wtf is this move? I have never seen this before in all my years involved with Freecycle. What is this "throw in a couple more things to sweeten the deal" thing?
Free Government Funded Food Package Isn’t Up To Their Standard
These parcels were sent out to families of kids on free school meals (and others such as disabled folk) at the beginning of lock down. It was supposed to be 2 weeks worth of lunches, and cost the taxpayer £30 each. There was less than £5 of usually poor quality food, the surplus being pocketed by the private company our corrupt Tory govt appointed to do this. It would have been cheaper and way more effective to give struggling people the money direct. No, this wasn't a rejected act of kindness and charity, it was a scam.
Actually looking at the thread on Reddit (and the items shown) this is not the Free School Food Box - this is the Lock-Down Free Food Parcel that went to people shielding. This was a different scheme altogether and much more useful. It was also weekly. The school meal one was a disgrace I totally agree. This photo is only showing part of what was provided in the boxes I received (they did vary week to week but the quantities of food were similar). It also included oats, rice, box of cereals, tea, coffee, biscuits, tinned fruit and a few other tinned foods, potatoes as well as the carrots, shampoo, body wash... and probably other things I can't remember. I know because as a disabled person I was eligible and received the boxes myself. I didn't need them so gave them to some local families.
Load More Replies...Nothing. There was a lot more to most weekly deliveries than this as well. People think this was the school food parcel and it isn't, this is the box provided to those who were on the shielding list. As I said, those I saw had way more in them.
Load More Replies...If I remember correctly, the organization got quite a bit of money from the government (per person in need) for this, and instead of spending the money for it's intended purpose they pocketed most of it and gave very little to the people that needed it.
As someone has pointed out, wrong boxes. This was the free food parcels sent to those people who were told by the Government to shield.
Load More Replies...This is wrong. This was in the UK. The food parcels were sent to families with children entitled to free school meals to help them feed the children while they were unable to attend school during lockdown. The company that was responsible for putting them together were paid a lot of money by the government to do so, but basically short changed needy families instead. The parcels were meant to have enough food in them to provide lunch to a child for 2 weeks and most contained not even a few days worth. They also provided very little nutrition with little to no fruit or vegetables in some boxes. The box above is merely an example. There were many other low income families who had been relying on these boxes to feed their children during lockdown that were taken advantage of.
This isn't the same food parcel - the one shown was from the scheme where free food parcels were provided weekly to people shielding. It was better in several ways - more food, better range of food and provided weekly. The foods had to be stable so mainly tinned, boxed and dried goods but did include fresh potatoes and carrots and really not that awful. The free school meal one was appalling, no doubt about it. Check it on Reddit - provides more info but also I recognise some of the products I received in my weekly parcel!

Free Is Not Enough To Help Those In Need
When I moved across the country, there was a lot of furniture I could not take with me. A young mom that helped me with packing and cleaning had a friend that had just moved into an apartment but had no furniture or dishes. I offered a lot of my belongings for free. That girl started burning up the phone finding friends with trucks to come get the items offering pizza and beer to whomever helped. It was all gone within a couple of hours. If your given something for free, please be willing to accept it without strings attached. She ended up getting about $2500 worth of stuff for about $100 in pizza and beer.
