Once you cringe over [insert a wish-wash subject of debate] or the anti-vaxxers and get that sweet aftertaste from the sheer absurdity, you want a second hit. ‘Cause cringe is real and everyone loves it, from me, you, to 1.2 million members of the “Cringetopia” subreddit.
And there’s an infinite source of things to recoil from in laughter and embarrassment because the world, like the people in it, and like the subreddit itself, is colorful. As the community’s description says: “In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god's blessing. But because I am enlightened by my intelligence.” You may even get a philosophical drift on your way to the cringe journey.

To find out more about this insanely popular community, Bored Panda reached out to the “Cringetopia” subreddit's moderator Fjallmadur, who was happy to share some insights.
“We started this subreddit to break away from the politics and hate that CringeAnarchy was becoming saturated with. /u/IAmMrPositive founded this subreddit and brought along me and a few other CringeAnarchy moderators who were tired of the mess that place had become,” the moderator recalled.
Fjallmadur added: “He basically made it a full-time job promoting this place in relevant subreddits and building this community from the ground up while telling people that this subreddit was going to be a place for everyone to come together, put politics aside, and just cringe at the people doing really weird and awkward stuff that they post online.” Today, it has turned into the one of the most regularly active subreddits on the entire site.

When asked what the term “Cringetopia” refers to, the moderator explained that it’s exactly what it looks like, “an amalgamation of the words 'cringe' and 'utopia.'” Moreover, “It's a place where any cringe that doesn't break our relatively lax community rules or Reddit sitewide rules is allowed.”
The moderator of the community sees cringe as inherently subjective. “What makes one person cringe, another person may think is entirely normal,” he said and continued that “My take on it is that we've all done stupid stuff that we look back on and cringe about, and looking at these people is a good way to relive that feeling, even if it's not the exact situation that we've been in ourselves.”

As much of a flaming liberal as I am, I feel that this whole "cultural appropriation" concept is utter garbage. I'm seeing people literally saying that "white people have to wear white fashions and eat white food, mexican people have to wear mexican fashions and wear mexican food", etc. This is actually a crazy kind of racism. Always, cultures spread, people are influenced by other cultures, it is a GOOD thing and it is unstoppable. Even if sometimes it can be a little tacky and tasteless.
White food OMG. What is even white food? Germans LOVE potatoes, but by this standard we wouldn't be allowed to eat them, would we? They come from America and were eaten by native Americans. ...I am also Japanese. This does not bother me in the slightest. Hell, it wouldn't bother me even he wasn't a grand master of shakuhachi. I'm just happy that they took the effort to actually find someone who can play the shakuhachi. Really, please stop being "angry for us" because we ain't angry. This reminds me of the 'controversy' (I dare call it stupidity) about the author they found to translate Amanda Gorman's poem in the Netherlands. The woman they picked (and whom Amanda Gorman was absolutely fine with) is a poet and an author and white, and some journalist (I think?) with black skin was angry that they "couldn't find a Black woman" to translate and - and this is the part where it gets not just stupid but honestly insulting - "the white author wouldn't be able to express the feelings behind the poem of a poet (Amanda) who has always lived in a world that defines her by skin-color" Basically, the journalist said that the white poet wouldn't understand the poem because she was never Black. That just makes me so angry! If we really want equality, we need to understand that we are all human, and if we can understand the language and aren't emotionally constipated, we very much understand emotions! It ended with the white author dropping the project due to the shitstorm
I am dutch and I can say many social laws doesn't give you brains. There are people here who think black pete is racist (yes, those exist here too), and it has been an outright social war for years, activists vs old racists who claim "It's for the kids" and "it's tradition" and it's all seriously going out of hand as no one wants a solution in between

If Dani Jo is an Asian American, then she reminds me of some Turkish people in Germany. Those are more Turkish then the actual Turkish people living in Turkey. Do you know what I mean? I've read some articles. It seams to be like an identity crisis. They don't want to loose their roots in a vastly different country, so they overcompensate. Polish people for example had less difficulties because their culture is very similar to German culture. Interesting topic.

Although I think it's very cringey that they accused him of appropriation, it's also cringey to use the term "SJW". I've seen people called "SJW"s for asking for basic rights for LGBTQ people and women.
Sure, in those cases calling level-headed good people concerned about their community SJWs is lazy and cringe as you say but there are enough unhinged and dangerously extreme people who actually fit the bill for the term SJW to be used.

"Cultural appropriation" is both normal and good for cultures. It's usually a sign of admiration to want to adopt a cultural characteristic and it enriches the person adopting it. It shows how very similar we all are that we can interchange our cultures. The notion that a culture should never adopt something from another culture or have anything adopted by another culture is static and sterile.
I love how white people are the first to be offended by cultural appropriation. "Coco" by Disney was a huge hit in Latin America ------ but white people I knw in the US did a SJW without asking the people in question if they were even offended.... *sigh*

Fjallmadur also added that “we laugh at those folks, feel second-hand embarrassment over what we see, and share it with others, but I think that it's ultimately a way for us to empathize with the people who are being featured on this subreddit.”
And although there are “some bad apples in the bunch,” according to the moderator, “we're not about bullying or spreading hate at all; it's all just for entertainment and understanding other people at the end of the day.”
Turns out, the subreddit has a bit of a bad rep from other communities because “they feel like we're bullying people,” but Fjallmadur stressed the fact that their community is exactly the opposite. “Our community is all-inclusive, as you can see from our wonderful mod team, and I feel like we do a pretty good job as a whole to enjoy the light-hearted picking while avoiding actually hurting anyone,” they concluded.

I take issue with the idea of a baby's consent here. All decisions for a baby is against their knowledge and consent. No one consents to being born. That's not problematic, that's literally how babies work. If a toddler says they don't want to change diapers ever again, letting them decide that would be abuse. Part of it is probably just changes in their lives, but I feel like the more frequent argumentative/clickbait-y type posts have been large factors. I think in its' golden age BP was 99% pet/animal lists, comics, and art, which meant people had more opportunity to make funny and entertaining comments, but more recently it's been getting bogged down by political content and more "bad" stuff (eg more posts like "50 times people experienced evil neighbors" vs feel good stuff like "50 times strangers helped people"). Also a lot more beauty content, which isn't necessarily bad, but causes a lot of negativity for people with discussions about upsetting beauty standards. I find it kinda sad really, because our pandas are getting into more debates in the comments and we've lost a lot of the unity and good vibes :(
