Every now and then, we all need a distraction. But how can we surprise someone who's constantly on the internet? Surely, they've seen plenty of crazy stuff. Well, let's try something different and take a deep dive into the subreddit r/OddlyTerrifying.
It has 1.1 million members, and they're trying their best to share content that lives up to its name. Who knew that Jim Carrey doing The Grinch face without any makeup can look so sinister? Or that a mosquito flying in front of the lens when a person is taking a photo of a square makes it look like a giant alien invasion?
Most of these images aren't even that scary or dangerous when you spell them out. But they can still carve themselves into your memory like a vivid nightmare. Enjoy!

Whether it was triggered by seeing a car wreck while driving down the highway or a friend talking about how they saw a ghost in an old building; we tell ourselves that we don't want to look, don't want to listen, and don't want to know—yet we still look, we still listen, and we still want to learn more.

This is the best. I would have placed her in a wagon and wheeled her around for trick or treats. I kinda wish all kids would do scary costumes, like ghouls and goblins and witches and zombies and this. Costumes for Halloween have gotten too far away from the scary and now it is more like cosplay. Less Batman, more Vampire Bat!

"It's true for almost everyone that you don't want to see someone injured and you don't hope anyone died in the wreck. But, if they did, you do feel compelled to look at it."
To illustrate why, Scrivner wants us to take a look at the world of our ancestors. It was a dangerous place. The world today can also be dangerous, but even the most basic treatments that are available today can severely decrease the seriousness of an injury. "If you got injured 10,000 years ago (or even 100 years ago), your chances of surviving were far less than they are today with modern medicine. Even if the blood loss didn't kill you, an ensuing infection might. This placed a premium on avoiding danger—or at least avoiding the consequences of danger," he explained.

That's a great idea for a horror film! People go missing in a forest and when investigators go in they find these. They later learn that at night these sculptures come alive when you are alone and grab people and over the space of an hour they turn all the body tissue in the victim into wood while they are still alive, but they can't move or speak, yet you can see the immense pain on their face as they change before the brain finally turns too wood, and they are gone. Replaced by a killer wooden sculpture made of driftwood

For some that might seem like hell, but if you come from a broken family, this might well be a life goal. Kids who grew up in trailers, kids who never had a nice clean house like their school mates due to their parents being drunk 24/7, kids who grew up in orphanages or on the street, or simply kids whose parents were too poor to afford more than a tiny apartment - for these this might be a dream come true.

The reason it looks like hell is not because of the type of houses, but the uniformity of it. Could they not have rotated some of the houses on their plots, or made some small variations to them to make each on different. I live in an apartment and the designers deliberately made each one slightly different - bay windows, gable ends etc. It adds variety and makes it more interesting to look at. These are no more interesting than a row of shipping containers and at least they'd be different colours!

Actually, those are harvestmen, AKA daddy-longlegs. They're not spiders, but closely related to them. They're harmless, but still creepy. They gather in clusters like that in order to rest, from what I've read.

I am a Native American, and there are so many legends of the Bear. This is because before the First Peoples of this land were aware of apes, they felt the Bear most resembled man. I suppose it was because they were the only animal, at the time they knew, could walk on two legs and be the size of a man. So we revere the bear, in fact I am from the Bear Clan from the Seneca people.

Bears are horrifyingly human-like when a hunter has them skinned and hanged for processing. The similarity makes it a sight you can not un-see. It still haunts me.

That's actually incredibly cool! I never really thought about where they came from before, and I definitely never would've imagined they came from a nest like this. I don't like to kill anything, even insects, but some you just have to, like cockroaches. Then there are insects that for some reason, I just cannot bring myself to kill no matter what. Like it actually feels wrong to my soul. Praying Mantis are in that group. Along with honey bees, moths, butterflies, dragonflies, and ladybugs (and probably a few others I'm forgetting.) Praying mantis scare the carp out of me, but I just cannot hurt the little guys. We have a couple white ones around our house every year, and I just try to keep my distance.

I feel the same exact way! I was thinking that I was being very overly sensitive, because i can't bring myself to kill those either, with the exception of cockroaches and some spiders and stinging centipedes. I had a hard time trying to explain whatever it was that I was feeling and you said it perfectly! It feels wrong to my soul! We live in such an amazing world.

I live on a cliff and when i'm to the beach i'm always amazed by the number of stupid people, standing on the edge of the cliff, surrounded by "beware the cliff is falling, forbidden to go further" signs. Or by people just under it , patiently waiting to be smashed or stuck by the tide.

A couple of years ago there was a stone arch that fell into the sea in Gozo. Luckily it happened at night and not during tourist season. Walking on the arch had been banned for some time before because it was unsafe, but during the summer most people just ignored the signs and hopped over the fences.

In Victoria 2 people got trapped on a tall rock formation, situated over the ocean. The rock formation is called London Bridge. It was a bridge shaped formation which collapsed in the middle just after crossing it.

Depends on how they do it. If they show you an image they'd be able to capture it while you're looking at it. It's not necessarily a voluntary visualization study.

This is part of a CT scan, so it is essentially a cross section of the animal's scull. In humans they look creepy too whenever you get to the part with the eyes
