The world is a big place, and sometimes you don't have all the answers to all the random questions. The Internet does, though. There's even a subreddit called What Is This Thing? where people post photos when they have no clue what they're looking at, and others try to identify these interesting things. Can you believe it? A place on the Internet where you can ask and not be afraid of getting ridiculed for your ignorance and asking questions? Unbelievable, I know. That's why Bored Panda has compiled a list of some of the most random stuff and interesting facts found on that page, and you will surely learn a thing or two. From an unorthodox public bathroom door design to a hole in the sky, these cool photos and the explanations behind these random things are real eye-openers. This makes me sad because the old man is likely faceing the end of his life to pass his collection onto a stranger or maybe he can't walk well anymore either. This is a gift not just of the mementos themselves but of the heart, to see one's passion passed along to another.

Poor caterpillar carries the eggs around and protects the little wasps when they hatch(some odd hormones are released which confuse the larva's brain) only to be eaten later by these same little monsters. I admire the whole wasp family for their interesting biology and life but they can be truly awful and creepy sometimes.

I wouldn't have think that I would be able to be sorry for a caterpillar. But I went to check what is a Braconid Wasp and why it lay eggs on caterpillar. Getting eaten alive is soooo much on my top 10 of "death to avoid whatever the price".

Wrong answer though. those are not the eggs but the cocoons of a wasp species. The eggs where much smaller the larvae lived inside the caterpillar and now they came out to spread the word.

Free honey and free pollination of the local farms. Bee's actually produce much more than they will use because they are always making enough for hard times. Its a bee keeper's job to keep the hive safe and the bees safe. So this Elisa chick needs to settle down a bit.

We had a play house in our backyard when we were kids. Mom found the base of an old sunglasses display rack that we used for a table inside. Problem was that it had a hole in it. Bees ended up making a nest in it! Naturally, nobody wanted to get stung, so we called a beekeeper about it, turns out they were honeybees, and he was more than happy to come and take them so that he could look after them. :) We got our playhouse back, the bees lived, and the beekeeper got a new hive. Win/win/win.

Once a large pyrite discovery was made. Few people and their leader (can't remember his name) found something that was old, shiny and... well, it was obviously gold. They brought tones of the thing back to Europe just to discover it was a common pyrite. Everyone laughed at the poor men. They remained "fools" in other people's eyes for the rest of their days. Since then, the pyrite came to be known as the "Fool's gold".

Very nice find. Not often do you find a rounded gravel with a perfect cube of pyrite in it, much less a gravel of slate as they are both soft enough to be destroyed by running water with any kind of sediment load in it.

Yup, Man-O-War type jellyfish. Highly venomous. Stingers hurt a bundle! If stung, place a very hot cloth on your hand (without burning of course). Heat denatures the protein toxin. Works instantly. I used to be a scuba instructor and did it a few times for divers.

I've rented a place on a hill in a quite wild countryside (basically just landlord and me living there) and there were water sources on the property. When it was raining there were some visitors on my deck, mostly salamanders and toads 😍 I abolutely love toads since childhood, so one rainy day I excitdely grabbed one passing by, he took the biggest pee in my hands 🤣 I obviously scared him, and I was sorry about it but it was hilarious 😆

A Nixie tube (English: /ˈnɪk.siː/ NIK-see), or cold cathode display,[1] is an electronic device for displaying numerals or other information using glow discharge. Inside a Nixie tube The glass tube contains a wire-mesh anode and multiple cathodes, shaped like numerals or other symbols. Applying power to one cathode surrounds it with an orange glow discharge. The tube is filled with a gas at low pressure, usually mostly neon and often a little mercury or argon, in a Penning mixture.

a nixie tube is a neon equivalent of LED 7-segement display unit - basically an antique numeric display, that needs high voltage to function. glows neon-orange. if this unit in the photo is fully functional, it is an extremely valuable addition to an Electron-Pusher's collection. :-)

The CD47 (or GR-414) is the largest nixie tube in the world, with a digit height of 135mm. It seems to have been used in weigh-stations, as there are symbol tubes of the same size with the symbols Kg and t. (according to Google).

Not kidding, but in Norway some rightwing idiots had the opposite thought and massively complained about a bus being chockfull with women wearing a Burka - when it was in fact just the seats. Of course, they plastered it all over the internet where it was picked up and shared by many other idiots.

That's... well I 'm always surprise how much imagination some people can use to be mean to others. Just like when I discover the anti-homeless street furniture. It's different of course but usually the places where commodities are mandatory, are places that sell food and drinks. I would boycott places like that: poor interest for the people spending money in their shop.

Disabled person here, if I had to use that stall, I would immediately photo graph the view from inside and outside, find an attorney and file charges for indecent exposure, violation of my right to privacy, and a violation of the ADA laws, and anything else the attorney could come up with. Sick, dishonest, and twisted. Those stalls are required by law for a reason.

I experience the same quandary every time I have to use a public bathroom (i'm in the US)! I don't know which is worse, being in the stall trying to cover yourself from whoever's on the other side, or being on the other side desperately trying to look ANYWHERE but those gaps.

Wiki: CarpEdit Further information: Asian carp § In Chinese culture Carp (traditional Chinese: 鯉; simplified Chinese: 鲤; pinyin: lǐ) can be transformations of dragons, or carp can sometimes change into dragons. According to tradition, a carp that could leap the falls of the Yellow River at Dragon Gate, would be transformed into a dragon: this motif symbolizes success in the civil service examinations. (Eberhard, 1983:57-58) Dragon Gate, at the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi, is where the river flows through a cleft in the Longmen mountains, supposedly made by Yu the Great. According to one account, all the carp competed at a yearly competition to leap the Longmen falls, those who succeeded were immediately transformed into dragons, and flew off into the sky. (Christie, 1968: 65 and 74) Pictures of Carp attempting to leap the Longmen falls have been enduringly popular in China.

I still have no idea of the identity of the woman in my photo, but she is holding one of these flutina accordians. We, none of us, could id the odd thing from the photograph. Thank you.

Mold? Spores? Something On A Tree In The Woods. Too Scared To Touch It

Mold? Spores? Something On A Tree In The Woods. Too Scared To Touch It

Looks like some wooly aphids. Woolly aphids are sucking insects that live on plant fluids and produce a filamentous waxy white covering which resembles cotton or wool. The adults are winged and move to new locations where they lay egg masses. The nymphs often form large cottony masses on twigs, for protection from predators.

    DE Ray
    Community Member
8 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The gate is moved onto and off of the track (those types of races are frequently multiple laps, and you don't want to try to maneuver through the starting gate at each lap), so it is easiest to mount it to a vehicle somehow. As for why a Caddy - I imagine that it was one of the few vehicles cheap and available that also had a large enough engine to pull that much weight at the time it was built. That's why most stretch limos were Cadillacs back in the day - most other fancy upper class cars didn't have enough engine to handle the extra weight. (Now it's a non-issue, as pretty much any carmaker has at least one model with a very powerful engine.)

It's where another person sits that isn't the driver, they face the horses at the back so they can see what is going on and when to fold the gates back after the horses have started the race

The type of car it's on is actually a type of hurse, used to transport flowers (back in the day)for/to funeral homes. You can see rivets around the trunk, holding a cover on top to protect what is normally hollowed out underneath, similar to a truck bed.

Stabilizer mounts for vintage GoPros and other similar action cameras from the mid 19th to the early 20th century. They used this for shooting polo matches, horse riding, carriage rides and that sort of thing. It fell out of use in the early 20th century because it was too big and cumbersome to carry around without looking like a narcissistic twit. These days we call it a selfie stick.

It is an insulin pen needle. It screws on to the insulin pen. You twist the end of the pen however many units of insulin (click per unit) you need. It's disposible.

That's really sad. The place from where these chickens came must have had hundreds, if not thousands of chickens under one roof. They are usually overfed in order to gain weight quicker, but in this way little chicks' legs which are still developing, often cannot support the abnormal body weight. What I'm trying to say is that some chickens are forced to lie down all day on the dirty floor which no one bothers to clean. It's awful, but it's a fact, that's what the worst poultry suppliers still do.

I used to know someone who's parents had a quail farm but they were battery quails. He took me round the barn once and it was horrifying. More than ten birds in each tiny cage, all crammed on top of dead birds and in a lot of instances, the alive birds were desperately eating the dead ones. They sold quail eggs for an extortionate price, it sickened me.

This is why i became a vegan, the poultry industry is f****n sick and barbaric, they don't even try to pretend that bird isn't knee deep in other birds f****n s**t. The phrase "free range" is also very misleading, i believe free range means a small patch of grass or outside land only a few squared feet and it isn't big enough to allow the chickens to freely walk around, they just have a bit of "fresh" air. Its a absolute disgrace. Please people raise your own chickens and eat fresh, healthy eggs. Chickens suffer so badly with eye problems and everything else that comes with birds being packed together and s******g everywhere.

That's actually probably a picture of Thad Starner, who designed his own customizable wearable computer while at MIT and has been wearing it continuously since 1993. NPR's Invisisibilia devoted part of an episode to him. If it is him, it's not a display - it's a functional computer! He apparently helped found the company (Charmed) cited above, and is now working on Google's wearable computers.

If I understand correctly, the textured surface on the tool lets you feel the movement of the machine while keeping your eyes on counting seconds. That way, you can count number of movements in a given number of seconds to calibrate how quickly the machine moves. I think. I hope that's at least a littler clearer than the original explanation.

For those that still dont understand, its a tool used to calibrate the speed of a rotating tool called a lathe. It could be a metal lathe or a wood lathe, but this tool allows you to figure out how fast the surface you are cutting is turning so you can properly set the speed of the rotations.
