I kind of like the idea of being buried underneath a nice tree to become its food. I mean, I'd be dead anyway, it would be cool to be useful and contribute to something beautiful still. Hopefully, the view can also be a consolation for the grieving ones.

I agree. I want to be donates to science or buried in a biodisposable coffin so I can get recycled. Why spending half your savings for that?

I find the concept of being embalmed and having my dead body put on display to be creepy. I'd rather a green burial or cremation. Burying some big, lacquered wood and metal coffin to try to stave off the natural process of decomposition seems so wasteful.

I think some believe the more lavish a funeral is, the more respect/honor/loved the dead is. Also, could be like big weddings where people use a gathering to show off their wealth/kindness/loyalty/concern, etc. I am speaking only of the living, not the recently deceased that may have wished/willed for a lavish service

In a similar vein: I don't understand why not everybody wants to be an organ donor. Wouldn't it be great if something good came out of your death?

Agree, both my parents specified unattended cremations, which were very cheap, & my wife & I have the same provision in our Wills

My parents and I agree, but when we lost dad we tried to meet his wishes and there was no one who would do a low cost, low impact funeral. He always wanted a cardboard “box” cremation, with just a family get together, but no one does cardboard here. So, by the time we picked the most plain wooden coffin and the family inputted (they went against dad’s wishes) the cheapest we could manage was still $7k, and we were made to feel cheap, even by other family members. It ended up a day that was both not what dad wanted and I’m still so sad about that.

I've been to funerals that were very small and not at all lavish, and they still cost several thousand dollars. I like the idea of those pods where they turn you into a tree.

i’d love to be cremated and my ashes mixed into a reef ball, which they drop in the ocean for coral reefs to develop and grow. i was practically raised in miami (though not born there) and i’ve loved the ocean since i could go and explore it.

Sometimes it is not about what the dead or the family wants. My father was active as a voluntary firefighter since his youth, a lot of people looked up to him at work and he was volunteering at church. We decided to have the funeral/ceremony be open to everyone (and keep the coffee and cake -traditional for germany- just open for the closest circle) so that everyone who wanted could say goodbye. There were around 300 people in the church and at the funeral itself and he got all the traditional honors from the firebrigade and his work (coal mining industry) because it was their way of dealing with his sudden death. It actually helped a lot to see how loved he was. But I get where you are coming from. A lot of things at funerals (depending on your culture) are way too expensive and a lot of people try to show off with it. Or the "law" is stupid. My dad was almost 2m tall and we had to pay extra to habe him cremated because they needed to find a big enough coffins for that

I prefer to be scattered over a nice pristine mountain side. If the living wanna talk, pack some nice food and a good bottle, sit down relax then we can talk lol.

funerals aren't for the deceased. they're for those left behind, as part of the mourning process. as far as the rest, yeah. I'm with you on that... I don't really care what happens. Turn me into fertilizer for all I care.

I don't understand it or want a lavish funeral. But my 84 year mother wants one and she shall have one.

I have told my son to drop me down the nearest mine shaft and tell everyone I just went missing. Otherwise, if he wants everything legal, it is cremation and he's to throw my ashes over a cliff at dawn. (I don't want to blow back in his face at sunset!)

That's what I say. Put me in a plain old hand maid wooden box in the ground and I'm good if it was good enough for generations before us, haha. Maybe some fiddle and mandolin graveside, like Wild Bill.

My dad passed away in late 2019. He had arranged beforehand to donate his remains to a medical school. All I had to do was call, and they came and picked up the body. It cost nothing, and it's what he wanted. I plan to do the same when my time comes.

I think we all need to make our wishes very clear before death, preferably in writing. If you die suddenly and your family are grief stricken, maybe never been involved in organising a funeral before, they're at the mercy of funeral vendors telling them what is a "normal" send off. With most funerals held within a week of death, there is no time to think it through or shop around.

I have ALZ so I'm donating my brain to science (Mayo). The rest will be cremated and go to Fort Snelling National Cemetery. It's a beautiful one. And free.
