Did you know that hippos attract mates by peeing, elephants only sleep two hours a night, and male bees are locked out of the hive during winter?
I’m a writer and illustrator living in the Netherlands, and I draw sad animal facts. I’ve spent the last three years researching and illustrating sad facts about adorable animals and sharing them online.

Andrius, you are loved around the world by humankind.💖
Load More Replies...I wonder how scientists found out at first place that a mouse is sad. For me, these little buggers are always super excited running here from there and so on...
By paying more attention to them than you do, mayhaps?
Load More Replies...In comes a chunk of cheese and these sad mice will be grinning from ear to ear.
I know what makes a mouse scared, but what makes a mouse sad? And how did scientists know they were sad? Do they cry? I need more info! Ackkkk!
Nutty Nature Hacks
I mean this one isn't that sad.. They plant the nuts they grow into, lack of a better word, but tree and the squirrels get even more nuts. Win win
When you see several trees that are growing on top of each other (say three trees grown from the same spot that have grown into each other), that's very often the result of squirrels that never retrieved nuts they buried.
This is actually not true. They just hide more nuts than they need for the winter. Also, they might fall prey to some predator - and in that case they will never be able to eat those nuts. They do remember where they hid their nuts.
They say that about the German squirrel (red squirrel?) too, but in a documentary I saw that the squirrels know very well where they hid the nuts. It was the magpies and jays that watched them hide a nut and then retrieving that nut when the squirrel left. So later the squirrel looked for its nuts and they are gone. Then the squirrel is running around in confusion and people thought that that is forgetfulness. But the poor squirrel is just looking for his nuts.
"It isn't my fault I forget were I hid my "nuts" they are too small and hidden where I can't see them".
One year, I gave a friend's mom a squirrel feeder for Christmas, along with a 50 lb. bag of ear corn for it. The next summer (they lived in a nice neighborhood), people couldn't figure out why there were stalks of CORN shooting up in their lawns! It's not only nuts that squirrels bury and forget about. . . .
Mirror Meltdown Moments
Google preventing bird strikes for things that you can put on your windows. Some are running in to refection they think sre open sky. It is dangerous for birds to attack straight on in full flight so I wonder at the percentage of this one.
"Whose that awesome bird in front of me....(smash) oh # * ## !! oh it was me."
For three days I had a bird running into my window non-stop... I guess he REALLY hated himself.
Cold but Not Colder
"Really I have a warm heart it's just so darn cold outside that's it".
Selective Attention Experts
Not true. Cats have definite preferences for various people, and I know for a fact that one of ours likes men because of their deeper voices. Plus, mine come running when I talk to them.
I agree! I've got 13 cats and they all like my high pitched voice I use when I talk to them and they don't like or care for when my husband talks to them unless he tries to talk like I do which can be weird lol.
Load More Replies...Tehy don't care that they recognize the voice, or don't care about who talks to them?

Tiny Tears, Big Drama
My life is marked with tears instead of places being marked with tears Why is life so depressing most people on bp are always upset it should be called depressed panda
I was taught as a kid that their scent glands are near their tear ducts (or perhaps are their tear ducts), so it's not actually their tears they are using
Love, The Painful Way
Actually, they nip each other, trying to not draw blood. It’s showing caution to one another. Just a fun fact :)
Ah... as in the Austin Powers quote: "I won't bite... hard!" 😁

Now how can that be true sharks have very bad eye site and can't see who they bit?

Awww.. that's sad. I guess that why by nature they reproduce multiple babies and quickly too. If not im sure by this rate they would have been extinct by now. :/
Creepy Snack Time
They cry because the thirsty moth sneaks up to the sleeping bird and tells them sad stories.

Solo and Thriving
Single women also live longer than married women. Single men, on the contrary, live shorter. We may conclude that marriage is bad for women and prosperous for men. Men need a housekeeper. Women need to go out and do more important things than housekeeping for their men :).
I think everyone who doesn´t have to deal with others s**t lives longer so.
Weight Gain Woes
Mildly Passive Puppers
I'd like to say they did it to themselves. Early domestication was the weakest wolf. He could never eat. We ate and left bones with marrow and such. We fed him. He barked when things were coming. We woke up and defended ourselves. I have a basset. Would she defend me? NO! but she will let me know when something is coming. I now defend her. And she snuggles me. Fair trade.
Load More Replies...Well, if a wolf came up to me, I probably wouldn't stop to find out if it needed help solving its problems.
people say we disabled and bred dogs to be "stupider" but really wut happened is dogs are capable of doing just like wolves, but dogs are smart enough to make a human do it for them instead by acting like they cant, that's why when you dont see them they get into everything, or do all the stuff they made you do when they think your not looking {but you really are}
My great Dane is a major puzzle solver. He loves to figure things out. BUT he will come get me for help when a ball is behind a chair because he knows if he bumps the chair it will fall over - and that's too scary for him. So he asks for help. He's not dumb! :)
This means that dogs are smart enough to ask for help, so they can solve problems, while wolves haven't learned to do that yet, fyi!
Too Many Faces to Handle
Einstein had static and dynamic. He said static thoughts, where you live who your are married to etc, took up X of the brain. However, if you kept learning dynamic things, ie new things, you could overload and start removing static thoughts.
Most animals can't recognize faces at all. They can't even tell it's them in a mirror. It takes a special area of the brain to do that. That's why some people are face blind - that part of their brain doesn't work. They can only tell one person from another by clothes, body size, etc. Weird but true

Blobfish get a bad rap. they look like normal fish at depth. If you, as a person, went down to 4000 feet you'd be turned into paste but this fishy would just be swimming around
This is actually a pic of a blob fish when scientists bring it up from the deep. Because of the pressure of the ocean, they do not look the same where they live (way, way deep down). They probably have other ways of moving down there.
Load More Replies...They actually look like normal fish when in water. They only look blobby because we take them out!

Gravity Has Opinions
6 ft is 183cm. Not far off 2 metres (200cm). When they drop and hit the ground, the thump from falling makes them take their first breath of air.
I believe they dangle closer and closer to the ground before the final drop, so is xitcreally
That's what makes them start breathing. If I fell six feet, I'd stop breathing!!

Mastering the Art of Excuses
They do that to protect their eggs. Predators like to hunt injured prey.
Yep, they do it when you're getting too close to a nest. I love these little guys, we have lots of them where I live in WV. :)
We get these in our driveway for whatever reason. We try our best to not run over their eggs. They look exactly like rocks. When you get close walking by they definitely act injured to draw your attention away from the nest.

Same happens to cats. Their snouts get in the way so they can't see directly in front of them.
With rabbits it’s a bit different, because rabbit’s eyes are on the side of their heads
