Did you know that hippos attract mates by peeing, elephants only sleep two hours a night, and male bees are locked out of the hive during winter?

I’m a writer and illustrator living in the Netherlands, and I draw sad animal facts. I’ve spent the last three years researching and illustrating sad facts about adorable animals and sharing them online.

When you see several trees that are growing on top of each other (say three trees grown from the same spot that have grown into each other), that's very often the result of squirrels that never retrieved nuts they buried.

    Becky Kidus

This is actually not true. They just hide more nuts than they need for the winter. Also, they might fall prey to some predator - and in that case they will never be able to eat those nuts. They do remember where they hid their nuts.

    Steve Bowman

They say that about the German squirrel (red squirrel?) too, but in a documentary I saw that the squirrels know very well where they hid the nuts. It was the magpies and jays that watched them hide a nut and then retrieving that nut when the squirrel left. So later the squirrel looked for its nuts and they are gone. Then the squirrel is running around in confusion and people thought that that is forgetfulness. But the poor squirrel is just looking for his nuts.

One year, I gave a friend's mom a squirrel feeder for Christmas, along with a 50 lb. bag of ear corn for it. The next summer (they lived in a nice neighborhood), people couldn't figure out why there were stalks of CORN shooting up in their lawns! It's not only nuts that squirrels bury and forget about. . . .

Single women also live longer than married women. Single men, on the contrary, live shorter. We may conclude that marriage is bad for women and prosperous for men. Men need a housekeeper. Women need to go out and do more important things than housekeeping for their men :).

I'd like to say they did it to themselves. Early domestication was the weakest wolf. He could never eat. We ate and left bones with marrow and such. We fed him. He barked when things were coming. We woke up and defended ourselves. I have a basset. Would she defend me? NO! but she will let me know when something is coming. I now defend her. And she snuggles me. Fair trade.

    people say we disabled and bred dogs to be "stupider" but really wut happened is dogs are capable of doing just like wolves, but dogs are smart enough to make a human do it for them instead by acting like they cant, that's why when you dont see them they get into everything, or do all the stuff they made you do when they think your not looking {but you really are}

Most animals can't recognize faces at all. They can't even tell it's them in a mirror. It takes a special area of the brain to do that. That's why some people are face blind - that part of their brain doesn't work. They can only tell one person from another by clothes, body size, etc. Weird but true

I'm probably the only one that's wants the coyote to catch and kill roadrunner. Same with tom and jerry, ever since I was little I wanted to kill that stupid mouse, for being so mean to tom. (since i love cats)

Is this connected to those creepy bird-tear drinking moths? I kinda hope so, because the idea of the moths flying around making other random birds cry is just troubling...

They do that to protect their eggs. Predators like to hunt injured prey.

Yep, they do it when you're getting too close to a nest. I love these little guys, we have lots of them where I live in WV. :)

We get these in our driveway for whatever reason. We try our best to not run over their eggs. They look exactly like rocks. When you get close walking by they definitely act injured to draw your attention away from the nest.

Same happens to cats. Their snouts get in the way so they can't see directly in front of them.

With rabbits it’s a bit different, because rabbit’s eyes are on the side of their heads

HorSes have something similar. They can't see you when your riding them, right in front of them and directly behind them

Fortunately, they can't cover their smells with deodorants like too many people do. That smells even worse.

So it is nice if we fill our gardens with flowers!

As I've spent years uncovering sobering truths about the animal kingdom, I've discovered fascinating tidbits, such as the fact that while elephants barely sleep, giraffes are also minimalist snoozers.
