Humans have come a long way since our Neanderthal forefathers, but sometimes, something happens that makes you wonder just how much we’ve evolved. Are we really so crazy about our health that we come up with useless products like diet water? Unbeatable eggs? A case for a banana that is already equipped with a perfect guard called a peel?
Though some would say those are useless things, we say it’s marvelous! These utterly weird, unnecessary things perfectly depict our creativity in every imaginable sphere. Yes, sometimes this useless stuff we invent is a bit over-the-top, but hey, stairs that seemingly lead nowhere might be a portal to some other dimension.
You just have to take a proper look at what seems like the most useless thing in the world. Just like a road sign containing a message that it isn't a road sign might seem like one of the most useless objects you’ve ever seen. But it actually carries a more profound message and isn't some measly design fail at all.

These balconies are each shared between two apartments. You climb out the windows on the edges of the balconies to get onto them. They look a bit cramped and annoying to use, but we should have higher standards for pointlessness.

They probably did it to avoid the annoyance of angry stupid drivers who reversed into the pole and accuse them instead of admitting they drive like s**t. If they let the pole there it's for a reason. Maybe it can't be taken off because the base is a large ciment block underground. Or maybe this pole is supposed to wear another sign that isn't available at the moment.

In several countries buildings have to be separated into different fire-sections, between which there have to be doors. There might be a big sliding door on the left to separate the parking area on the left from the one on the right in case of fire. To be still able to escape between the both of them as a pedestrian there is the door on the right.

A lot of these have rational explanations and/or were purposely made as gags. At first glance, the situation may seem odd, but there are decorative, utilitarian, and other reasons for the supposed "fails."

I've seen much more useless things... Fire axe behind glass that says break in case of fire... Stairway into the side of a building - no door.... Elevator in a building with 5 floors with 10 floor buttons - if you push anything above 5, it lights up, and a second or two later goes out... Front door that locks on the outside... much stupider than these.

Actually, #4 kind of makes sense when you think about it. What if you wanted to hang a curtain over that window? Then if someone comes knocking, and you'd rather not have certain people knowing you're home, you can peep out the hole rather than drawing the curtain back.
