Mom Tries To Score A Free Wedding On Daughter’s Big Day, Gets Shut Down Fast By Furious Bride-To-Be
I’ve always valued good relationships with my family. I grew up with parents who put in the effort to build a strong bond with me. A bond I’ve tried to nurture over the years, and now, as a parent myself, I’m hoping to create that same kind of connection with my own kids.
But as this woman’s experience shows, it’s easier said than done. In a recent post on Reddit, she complained about her mother constantly trying to compete with her, which eventually culminated in the lady suggesting a double wedding.
Wedding planning can be exciting, but family dynamics can sometimes create unexpected tension
A newly engaged woman was excited to share her news with her family, but her mother quickly turned it into an unexpected competition
Her mother’s choices continued to complicate important wedding decisions
A venue visit escalated into a stressful family conflict
The bride discovered another troubling detail involving her father and wedding plans thanks to advice from the community
The young woman finally cancelled her wedding plans and said she started thinking on another date
Weddings are one of the most meaningful milestones in a person’s life. I know mine was. Couples spend so much time anticipating that special day. And the ceremony is much more than just a party: it’s the beginning of a new chapter, surrounded by the people who matter most.
According to Paul J. Zak, Ph.D., weddings can trigger powerful emotional and physiological responses. His research found significant changes in oxytocin after the vows, highlighting how deeply this ritual can affect both the couple and their loved ones.
All of that emotional weight can also make wedding planning quite stressful. And not just because of money. Family dynamics are another huge stress. Letting a relative get too involved in the planning is hardly a good idea, and the woman learned it the hard way.
However, family tension during wedding planning is not necessarily caused by the wedding itself. Laura Dabney, M.D., a psychiatrist and relationship expert, explains that weddings can expose relationship patterns that were already present beneath the surface. They can make old family dynamics suddenly feel much more intense.
Dabney also points out that parents may show vulnerable emotions indirectly through criticism or excessive involvement. At the same time, daughters can feel torn between wanting closeness with their mothers and wanting independence. In that sense, wedding planning can magnify tensions that were already there.
A tension that is not unusual at all. Like the woman in the story, not everyone has a good relationship with their parents. In research by the Pew Research Center, 18% of young adults described their relationship with their parents as fair or poor, so we can see why so many weddings are ruined by parents.
Personally, I find it difficult to imagine deliberately sabotaging one of my children’s most meaningful moments. As a parent myself, I would naturally want to celebrate and support my kids during such an important milestone. This mother’s behavior is particularly difficult for me to understand.
So it’s a good thing the young woman decided to cancel everything and start over without her mother.

According to Reddit, this happened NINE years ago, and there is no update, and then the banner covered over, and I can find out nothing else.
I noticed that too. Wonder if couple is still together, Mother scouting out truck stops or bridges..... I am sure if OP got pregnant, mom was suddenly expecting triplets or announced that she was adopting a mystery child from a shifty overseas orphanage.
Load More Replies...not sure why BP pulled this out of the ancient history books, it is nearly a decade old now, with no updates. Plenty of time to have found out who Jack Rabbit is, had the wedding, had the fall out, had a few kids and maybe some divorces already. Sounds like it was just made up and they could not bother finishing the story.
