“Buy Another Seat”: Mom Sparks Outrage After Passenger Reclines Seat Into Her Lap
Interview With ExpertThe dispute over airplane etiquette has once again taken center stage after a mother-of-two went viral for venting her frustration at a fellow flyer who reclined his seat in front of her during a three-hour flight from Cairns to Adelaide, Australia.
Her post, uploaded to TikTok, has already drawn more than 4.3 million views, but also fierce backlash from travelers divided over who was in the wrong.
- A mother went viral on TikTok after showing her struggling with two kids as a passenger reclined into her space.
- The clip divided viewers: critics called her entitled, while others blamed shrinking seat space.
- Experts urged passengers to avoid confrontation at all costs and prioritize common courtesy.
“When the guy in front of you puts his seat back when he has an empty seat right next to him,” the mother, identified as Norton, wrote. She added that once the seat tipped back, it was “30 cm from [her] face.”

Norton explained that she had been seated in the middle with her 10-month-old baby on her lap and her 2-year-old by the window.
In her viral clip, she can be seen struggling to corral the children as they play with toy airplanes and tractors, visibly pressed for space.
That’s when the passenger in front suddenly reclines his seat, snapping it back into her already cramped area.
With the chair just 30 centimeters from her face, Norton said she was left with virtually no room to move, let alone tend to her children.

The situation, she explained, made it hard to breastfeed and retrieve the toys her toddler dropped. She called the move inconsiderate, noting that the passenger “could have moved over and put the other seat back, where there was no baby behind him.”
“Or, when he laid down across both seats, he could have at least put his seat upright since he wasn’t even using it,” she vented online.
“I know everybody has the right to put their seat back, but where is the common courtesy? We had no space.”
Debate ensued, with many accusing Norton of being entitled while others defended the front passenger’s right to recline his seat
@matildanorton Hear me out.. he had an empty seat next to him. He could have moved over and put the other seat back.. where they was no baby behind him. Or when he laid down across both seats he could have at least put his seat upright since he wasn’t even using it 🫠🫠🫠 I know everyone has the right to put their seat back.. but where is the common courtesy 😭😭 we had no space #airplane#travellingwithkids#commoncourtesy#helpme♬ original sound – Matilda
As is often the case with airline complaints, the video turned into a lightning rod for debate.
“As a mom of 2 toddlers: Don’t make others responsible for your choice to fly with small children,” one wrote.
“It’s HIS seat. Hope that helps,” another added.
Others accused Norton of hypocrisy.
“So let me get this right. You won’t switch places with your kid because you want him to have a window, but expect a stranger to give up their comfort for you? That’s a new level of entitlement,” one commenter said.
Others empathized with Norton, ultimately placing the blame on airlines for shrinking seat space

But Norton wasn’t without defenders, with some framing her ordeal as the inevitable result of airlines reducing seat space and soaring prices that force passengers into increasingly uncomfortable accommodations.
“I think airlines need to get rid of reclining seats in economy,” argued one viewer.

“People have the right to complain,” another added. “They even have the right to be upset, but this paradigm is so emblematic of the problems in the US.
“We blame our fellow passengers for reclining their seats, when it is the airline that made the seats that way. Be mad at the airline, not the person following the airline’s rules.”

A third one agreed.
“Customers should direct their anger at airlines and plane manufacturers. The only thing I can think of that’s more torturous than sitting in any airline’s seat is having my teeth drilled.”
Experts urged people to be more considerate of others, noting that a small degree of courtesy can go a long way in defusing situations like these

To better understand the situation, Bored Panda spoke with Diane Gottsman, a national etiquette expert at The Protocol School of Texas, who said that while reclining may feel like a right, it should also be treated as a responsibility.
“While it’s more comfortable to recline your seat and relax when you’re on an airplane, it’s important to be aware of the people you are inconveniencing,” Gottsman explained.
“You may have paid for a seat that reclines, but if you are resting your seat against someone’s knees behind you, it’s a discourtesy to your fellow passenger.”

She suggested that passengers take a moment to gauge the situation before leaning back.
“A good rule of thumb is to look back to assess the situation. If they have their tray table down, are using their computer, or have extremely long legs, your consideration would be appreciated.”

For those caught on the receiving end, Gottsman recommended seeking help rather than confrontation.
“If you were the one who is being inconvenienced, you can ask the flight attendant for assistance and let them handle the situation.”
“Did you talk to him?” Netizens believe the issue could’ve been handled better with some communication

I do NOT need your permission to recline a seat that I PAID FOR. If you're too special to deal with it, you might want to consider first class since that's the kind of treatment you expect.
Yeah my husband is 6'5. He HAS to recline that seat if he has a prayer of getting from A to B with the least pain possible. If we're flying more than a few hours we save up for a more expensive seat.
Load More Replies...I don't think that airline seats in economy should have the capability to recline.
We were just on a Jet2 holiday. The plane was economy only and the seats could not recline. The mechanism was not there.
Load More Replies...Airlines should not have seats that recline unless they increase the space between rows. Many people end up having the reclined seat shoved right up against their knees. And it is almost impossible to use your table when the seat in front of you is reclined. Everyone knows that they are taking up space that the person behind them paid for when they recline their seat. I don't understand why anyone thinks that is okay. If there is someone in the seat behind you, don't recline. If you do, you are depriving them of space they paid. for.
I fully support your comments about airlines. *I’m* cramped in economy when the person in front reclines and I’m not even 5’2”. But I take issue with your hypocrisy regarding who paid for what. The person in front PAID for the couple of inches space their reclining chair provides as part of the service. Mom could have done a number of things to alleviate her situation. Ask the guy in front *nicely* if he’s willing to move to the seat in front of her toddler. If she’s incapable of facing that, non-confrontational, social anxiety (valid reasons!), ask an FA to ask on her behalf. Switch seats with her toddler so she’s behind the non-reclined empty seat. Or, recline her own seat to gain the measly 2” back! TBH, I’m not impressed with the image she used to prove her point of being crushed. She’s *obviously* leaning forward, her head, shoulders and upper back aren’t even touching her chair. And ask yourself the important question: who took the pics? The seat in front of them wasn’t reclined, why not swap places with them and have easier access to the aisle for bio-breaks? Because I don’t believe for a second that a random stranger agreed to take pics of this poor “crushed” mom to post on TikTok. I’d have more sympathy if this young woman wasn’t being blatantly manipulative while expecting the world to just cater to her.

This is the problem with looking at everything in the paradigm of "rights". Just because it's mechanically possible to recline the seat doesn't mean it's reasonable to recline your seat at all times. Just because your noise ordinances prohibit noise over 120 db after 11 PM doesn't mean it's OK to play music at 140 db up to 10:59 PM, or at 120 db at 3 AM. You can't be issued a summons for it, but don't be a d**k. Don't take more food at the buffet than you can eat. Don't take all of the crunchy top part when they bring out a new dish to the buffet. Don't leave your clothes in the dryer for five hours, but don't take someone else's clothes out the moment the dryer is finished... and if you have to, treat them with respect. That passenger deserved a baby screaming in its ear the entire flight.
I mean, we could nuke every country in the world and survive, but should we really? This guy is right
Load More Replies...I think their is staff on the airplane who can hekp you. Why post everything online? This morning I couldn't open my jar of jam. Should I complain online? 😐
Wow... as of right now, 63% of the people who answered the poll don't blame the airlines. No wonder we're f****d.
That's because people want to pay less for airplane ticket. You can pay more to have more place, it's already an option. A lot of companies already have money issues. You have what you pay for. In my opinion, having a 2 years old in a plane is much worst than reclining seats...
Load More Replies...Google pictures of plane seating from the 40s to the 60s and then rethink your answer. The ONLY time I fly is international and the Ukraine Foreign Legion rejected me on age. I drive cross country.
I grew up in the late '50s and early '60s and an economy seat back then was approximately the size of a First Class seat now. On BOAC and Air France they were larger.
Load More Replies...This sucks. On the bus, too. The underlying issue, of course, is that the seats are reclinable, AND the space is too crammed for this to happen without fallout. After all, most of these issues might be resolved by a few words exchanged between the people involved. Nobody wants to hurt the guy behind. Nobody wants the dude in front to be origamied into the seat. How about ... checking, arranging something that works best for all parties involved, and complain to the pennypinchers who decided that one, two, three more rows shall be installed without the plane's length being extended just as much?
Courtesy is to check before you recline the seat and to even ask before you do. Today’s planes aren’t meant for a full Celine, especially if folks do it suddenly w/o checking. I know of at least one person who got a bruise on his head from one and know several who’ve had laptops broken. Check and ask
The fact that you pooped out a couple of kid does in no way require me to change my behavior.
I don't understand HOW could she possibly lean with her back on her seat if she was not only breastfeeding sometimes but mainly holding her baby the entire flight. Switching seats with her toddler at the window wouldn't work as the 2 yo would be there anyway only crushed on mother and the baby sibling. If they sell tickets for an adult and baby on one seat they must make it POSSIBLE! Otherwise they should not offer that deal. Honestly I didn't know seats on the plane can decline and I'm shocked of it as I had always having bloody spots on my legs and feet from my childless flying times. An by now I've also experienced flying with baby on me and toddler next to me at the window - can't imagine that on the top of it someone puts a seat in my face, it's also terribly dangerous it could hurt faces of the people behind. Standing on the seat and kicking hitting seat in front of us I don't allow, which is very hard job as my older is hyperactive but I take it as my responsibility so I'm busy!
Pathetic and entitled person just wanting to get internet famous.
Well...the person reclining probably needed a nap. Bc you know...wild toddlers on their feet in the back seat 😒🙄
That's why he was so grumpy, kind of like a toddler. Most toddlers behave better than most airline passengers these days.
Load More Replies...The mom doesn't like people who recline their seats. I don't like those who bring their children on planes. Neither of us will be happy
Children have just as much right to fly as you do to put your seat back. Ugliness. You were one of those children once & probably one of the jerk ones. This is why the world sucks now. As some people told the mom, if you don't like kids on planes, don't fly.
