Honestly he wasn't all that emotionally stable it just presented in ways most don't normally notice. His ability to assess risk and decide reasonable amounts of it was nearly non existant. "Hey that person mentioned the platform I'm after, gotta be safe", "Hey this girl I've never met but am pretty certain is brand new to this whole magic thing is pointing a wand directly at me, I'm sure that can't go wrong." "Oh hey, I think that teacher got attacked by a giant dog because he's dangerous, better make it clear I don't trust him." and that's just the first book/movie, his concern for his own well being drops significantly in each sequel.

I dunno. He ended up recreating his parents’ marriage, and then naming his kids both after his parents, and two people that had a huge impact on his life that wasn’t necessarily positive. I feel like if he’d had one more kid he’d have named them Tom.

Anyone that read the book can see that he had major anger issues. Not to mention his impulsiveness and constantly running into danger. He had a self destructive personality, which he LITERALLY followed through on. One thing I would NOT call him is 'Emotionally stable'. My therapist would have a field day with him.

That's the beauty about people! Some can weather any storm while others splinter with the smallest wind. Our greatest strength is our ability to create ourselves. Regardless of the environment or what is inside us, once we get past our purposeful excuses, once we admit responsibility for all the parts of ourselves no one or nothing else can touch, then, and only then, can we live as and reveal our truest selves. It's better to focus on a world where everyone can be better than settle for a world of problems and half-hearted solutions. We are free, right? But, in so many cases, it just seems like we are free to die without any purpose. Free to live a life like a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it. It's like the free, generic version of freedom. Tell me we can't do better.

The story doesn't elaborate but the snake pit incident should be an indication of his ability. Not every abused child grows up to be a psychopath. Some of them grow up to be talented witches. By the way: in the real world, they are witches - male witches or female witches. Wizards are something totally different, with different abilities and spiritual avenues.

Many fictional child characters are like this. Its only if they are sidekicks that kids shows let traumatized kids be actually traumatized. Shawn from Boy Meets World had major issues after parental abandonment, Sam from iCarly had an emotionally and physically abusive mom and was obviously traumatized, has social and behavioral issues, and wound up in jail (as told in Sam and Cat). Cat from Victorious has a strongly implied problematic home life, and she goes from being slightly ditzy teen to completely regressing into a child like state that persists into young adulthood. Angelica from Rugrats has some pretty big red flags even as a small child ( all those kids are neglected but Angelica is the only one with behavioral issues). But they were all side kicks or side characters. Main characters are pretty much always emotionally stable no matter what their hardships are. Harry Potter was an excellent example of that. Image how that story would read if he had to process his trauma.
