A lot of us like to sneak in a cheeky visit to McDonald’s every once in a while. The jury’s still out whether it’s the tasty junk food or our childhood nostalgia that keeps us coming back. Again. And again. Whether you’re a McDonald’s fan or you steer clear of it, you can’t deny that the chain’s restaurant designs had style and energy in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Bored Panda’s got a wave of nostalgia ready for you with this list of vintage photos from McDonald’s several decades ago, so scroll down, upvote your faves, and share what you remember about the fast-food restaurants from your childhoods, dear Pandas.
We hope that we won’t make you too hungry! When you’re done with this cool photo list, check out r/nostalgia who constantly update their collection of old photos that give us that bittersweet (or is that sweet and sour?) feeling of nostalgia.

When I was a kid my mum wore a purple felt tracksuit once and I said it reminded me of Grimace from McDonalds, I have never, and I suspect I never will, see such unadulterated rage in my life
This made me laugh so hard. You just made my day Unwelcomed Guest...
Load More Replies...Those fry guys freaked me out when I was a kid; something about having just eyes and legs was unnerving. I even ran out of a McDonalds and refused to eat lunch there that day because they had people dressed as them.
My spouse dressed as the blue fry guy when they were a child. Years later, my mother-in-law found the old costume and proceeded to wear it around the house. Yes, I did try it on. It was literally a massive dome made of crotchet wire as the frame, covered in blue shag like fabric and two big AF eyes that you could see out of. So cool.
Thank you! This confused me as ours in England are still like that!
Load More Replies...There are several countries that still have those, so should not be in this post. Actually where they don't have it besides US btw? (Truly don't know)
They still have apple pies, they just aren’t fried anymore.
Load More Replies...The worst part was when it was raining then the sun was shining right after, we insisted on going to play anyway, bathing in puddles :D
I grew up in Phoenix and Las Vegas. The worst part for us was April through October.
Load More Replies...I miss this so much. Kids these days won't know the pain and joy of sliding down that metal slide and going to "jail" in the hamburger .... in august in arizona. Now they're all bougie and look like cafe's so dumb
Those were the BEST! Was sad when I couldn't climb into Officer BigMac anymore
I can feel the a*s burn from that metal slide! I think I still have scars.
This looks exactly like our McDonald's, circa mid-90s. Outside, even the toys in the same positions.
Yes, in Vails Gait, my brother and I would enjoy the playground.
There was a McDonald's in BC Canada that still looked like this until a few years ago. Totally blew my mind when I rode by it
You wouldn’t mix up a photo of an old-timey McDonald’s interior with any other fast food restaurant. Nobody else had the same combination of cheeseburger seats, chunky plastic toys, and a loveable colorful cast of characters: from Ronald McDonald and Grimace to the Hamburgler and Mayor McCheese.
McDonald’s has changed a whole bunch over the years. Some might like the modern look, but a bunch of us would love it if the chain went back to its old playful aesthetic. Even if that’s not possible, we’d settle for a time machine so that we can grab one last old-school Happy Meal.
spent many of meals on those burgers as a child. oh and that floor, nearly slipped to my death too many times to count.
Fun fact: They did away with these because they were being used to sniff cocaine. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/stirring-response
Damn they caught me ? Ooooh sorry.... asking for a friend !
Load More Replies...I remember having to close one night (I used to work at a McDonald's in a nice area of my city as a teen in the mid-80s) and you're darn, uh, tootin' that the manager and assistant manager had a bump or three towards the end of the shift in the back office and used these spoons.
These bad boys go for a lot online if you can find them. Wish I still had one ;)
Ohh, you can have one smaller in silver for just as low as 18.25 euros at the corner of the main station in Milan. Oops. I was told they were ?
Load More Replies...Wonder how many of these is at the bottom of the ocean right now sigh....
😆 LOL😂 omg really? People use to use them to snort cocaine!? That's why they got rid them?
I've also seen that floor in Burger King, Subway, and a lot of other 80s and 90s fast food places
First it was the orange square tiles. I had 3 in my area that still had the classic design inside & out. They all remodeled to the new modern design (inside & out) about 6 months ago. But....there is one that has never been changed since the 70's. McD's moved to a larger location a block away, and the original became a taqueria, which never updated the flooring or exterior.
It’s not just the interior and exterior of McDonald’s that’s changed. The food’s way different, too. If you think that McDonald’s fries tasted better when you were young, it’s not just your nostalgia talking. In 1992, the chain changed how they made them. They switched from beef tallow to vegetable oil.
Let’s not forget how darn awesome McDonald’s Happy Meal toys used to be. I’ve still got my collection proudly displayed on my shelf. Now, whenever I go grab a burger at McD’s and glance at their toy display, I feel a bit disappointed. Either the toys aren’t as cool as before or I grew up.
I am JEALOUS beyond words. I have it saved as a search on eBay because if I have another kid I want one safety be damned
Keep an eye on "trade me.co.nz" it's like eBay in New Zealand they've been selling off old mcdonalds equipment recently I saw one of those hamburger jail things on there a month or so ago
Load More Replies...I've always hoped to find one of these at a garage sale or something, Loved them!
Wow, I haven't seen one in years but my 12y still used one first time we took him to a MC
My grandma had one of these when we were little. I have no idea where she got it but we used it in her home in the 90s 😂
No it is too. You can see the lines. They just decided not to transform that one. Including the fries I I have a set of most of them. I don't think I have the drink.
Load More Replies...Either my older sister still had one (I was born in 1987) or they came out with these again in the early 90s but we had the drink cup.
The transformers that we had in Canada actually turned into cool spaceships and jets.
Right after the transformers released in 86 I still have the chicken nuggets one. Believe it or not these are worth a few grand in mint condition.
They must've just gotten popular. I got most of them a few years ago, and I don't think we paid over twenty or thirty for them. Maybe that means still in the baggies.
Load More Replies...Oh my gawd. You kids. My location always ran out of the McNugget box one first during the whole promotion, and the little boys would throw fits.
Amazing... that cheeseburger clearly transformed into a cheeseburger with extra pickles!
We still have cookies https://mcdonalds.com.au/menu/mcdonaldland-cookies
I didn't know they stopped selling them in other countries. Australia never lost them.
Load More Replies...Loved these.. Why did they take them out?? The kids loved them too.. I guess if it sells, you discontinue them...too bad really
Finally, let’s remember just how amazing birthday parties at McDonald’s used to be. They were all the rage when I was growing up and they had a bit of everything. We’re pretty sure that kids have a lot of fun celebrating their birthdays at McDonald’s even now, but there’s just something missing. Or that could be the nostalgia talking.
My dad was the original designer of these buckets and lids. He was an injection molding engineer.
They still do that, or at least they did when I worked there a number of years back.
They brought thos back in 2016 i beleive once my gramma bought a bunch
The one we had at the McD I worked at was stolen. Returned after a week. Judging from the photo's in an envelop around his neck, someone took him on a roadtrip. We framed the photo's
I have a picture of myself (circa 2007) sitting next to him in abject horror. McDonalds just outside of Boring, Oregon.
Many kids were scared of this bench. Teens loved photo pos on Ronald’s lap.
We have a picture of us sitting next to Ronald on a bench like this at a McDonald's in India (yes India, not Indiana).
My son had his birthday party cople of times in McD in Skopje, some 17-18 years ago
When I got married, (1977) I went to McDonald’s and they gave me about 20 of their ashtrays for my reception.
Do you remember that if the ashtray wasn't bent too badly the crew member would wipe them down and reuse them?
The McDLT was really good. Funny thing about these Styrofoam boxes, studies showed that fast food restaurants produced more paper trash than Styrofoam. And the complaint against these was that they were filling up landfills. And when McD did away with these, more trees had to be cut down, because the high demand for paper boxes. At least the paper when dumped on the side of the road breaks down in a year or two.
I missed the McDLT. They should bring it back since they now biodegradable materials.
we used to make boats out of them with a straw and fry sleeve sail to sail in the puddles after torrential rains
ME TOO!!! Brought back a ton of memories too such as how much I disliked Orange Juice back then but love it now lol!
Load More Replies...If you have these or find them, do not drink from them. They were recalled because of the lead in the design.
OMG I think we had around 12 of these! I remember watching my parents drink coffee out of them every morning... My dad would sit there and repeat what was on his cup over and over and over....good times...
I am pretty sure my grandmother had the entire set! She LOVED Garfield! :)
I think they stopped them for "hygiene" reasons.... (?) Something about kids + food + pens + mouth....? Because they were re-using the ones that weren't written on, and someone freaked out about possibly getting some other kid's germs or something....
Load More Replies...Can't. Someone would be offend. The puzzle is an unrealistic oversimplification of environmental conservation efforts, diminishing the real and ongoing struggles faced by environmental activists. Grimace reinforces negative stereotypes about body image and perpetuate unhealthy standards, mocking the body positivity movement. The word game is exclusionary! Includes colors only in English! Ronald McDonald is "saving the environment", reinforcing outdated gender roles where only men are the heroes or problem-solvers! The maze game trivializing real-life dangers children might face, like getting lost or encountering unsafe environments. Hamburglar is Wyt & engaging in petty theft? Clearly trivializing the systemic issues of overrepresentation of people of color in the prison system. Downplaying the serious, real-life implications of criminal justice disparities that disproportionately affect black and brown communities. Insensitive to those who experience the real imprisonment.
This actually gave you something to do, besides read nutritional facts. Who wants to know how much fat and sodium and calories are in their fast food anyway?!?!
About $25 USD for the complete set - https://www.ebay.com/b/McDonalds-Batman-Forever-Glass/35668/bn_71609751
Load More Replies...They also had Flinstones Glasses maybe 1993? Hard glass like these batman glasses
My little sister have one of those.Until now we didn't know where it came from xD
My brother refused to drink out of any cup other than the Riddler cup from this collection when these came out. He was so young and I don’t remember when he got out of that habit, but I remember that cup always being used.
Full to the brim with delicious orange drink (orange in color not flavor).
tHIS! IT IN WORDS! I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT TASTED OF NOTHING!!!
Load More Replies...Ya' kidding me? Just seeing these coolers gives me the wonderful smell and taste memories of chugging that Orange Hi-C that Mickey D's always brought to games and events. They still make it in the Coke Multi-Soda machines...that we will never see again after COVID-19.
Can't count how many times we used this drink cooler and the orange drink that was concentrated... parties, family reunions, church gatherings, etc.
The stuff you have to drink to check for gestational diabetes tastes like a concentrated version of this.
These were kind of squashy and had a little hole with a valve at the bottom. I used to use them as water pistols.
Oh, I still have these! They're adorable but I mostly only have the costumes...
I have this whole set!!! Part of my most treasured Halloween decorations!!! LOTS of my friends want them!
They advertised in the 1970's that you could get a hamburger, small drink and fries and get change back from your one dollar.
Now is so expensive that you can’t afford to eat there it’s cheaper for me who works at Walmart to drive down to in and out or Jack in the box that has a good meal and it’s not expensive
I remember when combos came out and they were 2.99 plus tax.
The prices were the absolute best back then! That is how they reeled us in like crack dealers on the corner. Start them low and go cheap! Look at a menu right now! The inventors of the DOLLAR MENU and NOTHING but a coke is a dollar!! You damn near go broke feeding a family of 5!
Sad to say but I was one of the collectors of these. I also still have all of them. This just reminded me I have them stored in huge totes in the closet.
^^Yes! Drove all over to get each one! And they're worth nothing now!
Load More Replies...I HATED when those stupid things came out. The McDonald's near my apartment at the time always had a MASSIVE line in the drive through...with PILES of uneaten food thrown away at the trash bins near by. Wasting food for fad toys.
My mom buys these for my cat and we call them his “babies” and he will fetch it and bring it back to you if you shake it and then throw it. His first was the fish
The worst time to be employed there! We watched customers order food and pull to a trashcan and throw it away because they just wanted the toy.
I worked at McDonald's during that time. It was crazy how many Happy Meals people would buy to get them.
My husband was working as a swing manager when these came out. He HATED them. People could be such jerks about which ones they got. They had to put a limit on how many kids meals could be ordered at a time. It was insane.
Right?!?!?! ME TOO! It's the easiest way to eat a salad on the go!!!
Load More Replies...I got food poisoning from one of these at the McDonalds in the Field Museum in Chicago, we had to cut the rest of the weekend trip short because I was so sick! The food inspectors closed the McDonald there in 2003 citing unacceptable conditions!
I remember my dad use to buy the chicken Caesar one and it was delicious!! My dads passed away already and this reminded me of him😢
Had a friend growing up who's dad was a manager at McDonald's. When they changed out their playground equipment, the old stuff went to her back yard for a personal playground. It was glorious!
This still give anxiety...I remember being in one and other kids kept coming up and I couldn't get out
Ugh, I could still fit in there and I'm not even a kid... Good thing these are mostly dead because I'm small.
You haven’t lived unless you climbed up into this bad boy only to be stuffed in with 15 other screaming children crying desperately to find the wide opening in the bars so your parent could yank you out....every dang visit to Mc Donald’s.
The burger looks like a police which makes it look more like a jail cell...
My mom made me climb into one of these when I was about 10 to get my brother out. Still makes me feel uncomfortable to remember. First time I remember being claustrophobic.
Every kid would get one of these if they hosted a birthday all the attendees would get one
My cousin worked at Vonco where these and the baby bibs were made. She used to bring some hoe for us to play with.
These were done away with for being dangerous! Apparently kids were suffocating
And in this cartoony we're invading your tv! Sorry, I couldn't help it lol
Load More Replies...The scripts were rejected so expect the unexpected...I still remember the theme song after all these years XD
Load More Replies...Wow! I as an eastern europen didn't know that these were McDonalds toys. We had an uncle lived in the US and he sent a couple of these via post to Hungary for us. I only knew that these were "AMERICAN TOYS"! I was so proud of these and the fact that my grandfather's brother sent these from west!
Yep, you guessed it. Still got one (or two). The Elmyra one, I think.
I love these. There was a local "3am" restaurant we used to go to, and they used to have their own ashtrays. SO my buddy took one, and I had it for a number of years. SO I brought it back to the restaurant, which was still in business YEARS later..and left it on the table when I left. I wish I would have seen the waitress face to see an ashtray from like 15 years earlier sitting on the table! lol
LOL! So true! 😆 I Had probably 20 or more as teen. Go in group girlfriends walk out and all purses had some
I have spent so much money on Hercules toys, including McDonald's happy meals, because that animated movie was my than 6-7 yo son's favorite and he watched it on vhs almost every day for some 10 or 12 months
i know im late but my parents had a mcdonalds plate with all the characters on it but it broke it was my favorite plate
Load More Replies...We still have all of these. The poor pegasus one broke, but we still have it anyway.
I knew a guy that worked for the plate manufacturer and came up with this idea. It was the first McDonalds child gift with purchase.
I still have most of these in storage. I need to replace Hercules himself. I used it all the time when I'd have a meal with meat and potatoes in it, but then it got damaged and I didn't want to keep using it with a big pointy broken spot. Gotta track a reasonably priced one on eBay one of these days.
That's one thing I've never done and I have no plans of trying to catch up with the history!
I was a party hostess in the late '70's and the cake was a frozen sheet cake that I had to get out of the freezer and thaw before the party!!
I used to have my kids' birthday parties at McDonald's in the early '90's. For 5 bucks a kid (plus an additional small fee ) the restaurant provided Happy Meals, birthday cake, decorations, party favors for the guests and a special gift for the birthday kid. The host also entertained the kids with games. And they cleaned up afterward. It was awesome.
Little girl sitting behind birthday boy looks identical to little girl Carol Anne from 80's original poltergeist. RIP
Back when re-release on VHS was advertised as the last time you could get it before they locked out away in the Disney Vault.
I don't remember these ones. But toys so much better back the day in happy meals than now days
yup have every vhs actually including the old mcdonalds movies and show episodes and stuff in a closet
Oh gosh. I had everyone along with the VHS - donated them to the childrens ward at the hospital a while ago.
Let's say "or one regular Coca Cola" so it feels like there is options...
Elementary schools would give them out during our Halloween parades and I'd beg my Mom and Dad to take us before we went trick or treating!
My kids got Christmas gift certificates one year from a brother and his wife. Since I worked Christmas Eve at Walmart that's where we ate that year. Yes, we were broke and it was greatly appreciated!!
Me too! Think I had the one on the far left and the one in the middle.
Load More Replies...I want to share the most embarrassing moment of my life. My husband hates fast food, but I managed to convince him to go to Mc Donalds for dinner when our kids were little. After getting our trays of food, I stay with the kids while he is supposed to be getting the drinks/napkins and he is taking FOREVER. I am trying to entertain the kids with the dinosaur puppet while waiting for him to return. Finally, being the great mother that I am, I ask my 4 year old to watch my 2 year old and get up to find my husband. I see him over at the drink dispenser. I still have the puppet on my hand. I go up to him and bite his rear with the puppet and make "rawr. rawr." noises. All of a sudden I hear, "Tammy?" and I turn around and my husband's at the napkin area. I just attacked a total stranger's butt with a dinosaur puppet with sound effects. Funny for everyone else, but I was mortified.
Oh God and these were lava when it was 110* in Houston Texas in August
I was once playing on them, and they started to melt it was so hot. Still have the shorts I wore that day...
Load More Replies...The look on the kid's face is like "I'll be good, I swear! Just don't let the hamburger eat me!"
So wish I would of had this play place instead one had growing up.
I have an ancient, highly suggestive photo of me and Ronald on one of these benches. Let's just say there's a reason he looks so happy! ;)
When I lived in KY, the Walmart we'd frequent had one in the back, complete with bench.
Our Walmart still has McDonalds, and the bench used to be just inside the main door- don't know where it went ...
No, but a local Home Depot had a McDonald's. It was great when shopping with a small child.
SO THAT"S WHAT THEY WERE??!? My grandma had these as toys for us (born in 2002) but the darn things were so worn away I just thought they were generic toys. Oh the memories are flooding back now
I'm sure the nuggets had outfits. And I remember a guy with a moon for a head featuring in one of my toys (fingers crossed I find him on the list)
The moon headed guy was Mac Tonight. They used the song 'Mac the Knife' in commercials
Load More Replies...We had the food toys and a mini "drive thru" McD's stand. My girls loved it so much! We have it somewhere still.
My therapist has these. They scare me a little and I don’t know why
Still have all fo mine! My grandparents had them and the drive-thru!
omg i have the one closest to the front! kinda difficult to drink out of tho, unless you have a huge mouth XD
I had the complete set. Sold. I think 10 bucks. Too many people have them. Nobody ever used them; just stored them. Cuz too hard to actually drink out of. lol
That's the back of the chair, the seat is on the other side. And they weren't comfortable.
Load More Replies...always felt uncomfortable with the eyes looking up at me while I was sitting there.
McDonals used to be all about the kids. The one near me now is wall papered with ugly graffiti themed stuff and all about get in - get out.
Seriously! I played it recently to see if it was as sweet as I remembered, and it was! #Gamer4life
Load More Replies...No remembers the McDonald’s Mario 3 scratch and win happy meals we had them in Canada
😱😱😱MY ULTIMATE FAVORITE GAME MARIO 3!😍😍😍! I beat that so many times! My Boys watch me play this still but on the Nintendo switch. They love playing this and all old school games with me. My youngest boy would c**p his pants if he today were handed this happy meal box LOL! He is a huge Mario,Dk lover❤
Omg as I read this the taste of that "orange" drink instantly flooded my taste buds. (Sorry I'm going to puke now).
I'm on my way lol....just can't quit no matter how hard i try!
Load More Replies...McDonald's food smells so bad cigarettes are actually an improvement....
I worked during this nightmare. They didn't have the usual 1 week rotation for a month promotion. Instead they were all available for the whole month, but they were in 'blind' bags. There was always at least one adult standing at the counter asking to feel through a large pile of bags to try and get the one their 'child' was after
That's a lot of happy meals to get. They only changed them 1 a week. So how many weeks did this promo run?
So I take it "this" store couldn't afford the indoor playground?
Back then people didn't give as much of a f**k. At least where I grew up. (sad we've gotten WORSE and restrict more toys by gender)
Load More Replies...Wow. I remember alll of that. McDonald's was a treat for me as a kid. Rarely went but was always excited when I did.
Same it was so special and so amazing, the playgrounds weren't so generic they were fun

erm ... I suspect this is where everyone starts to call many things 'vintage' just to make themselves feel better about it all :)))

I still remember when they used to melt that big white cube of beef tallow in the deep fryer. The fries were so much better and stayed crispy longer.
Load More Replies...There was one in Hamilton, Ontario that had a pirate ship in the middle of it.
The McDonald's caboose! A train car with a mini McDonald's inside that you had birthday parties in
These were great! So many memories. I remember the Barbie happy meal toys. My mom drove me to every McDonalds in the city so I could have the whole collection.
now that some mom ... hope you appreciated that deed in itself
