From the beds we wake up in to the buses we take and the offices we work at, it often seems like we live on a man-made planet. But the natural world is all around us, all the time. It's just we build such intricate hideouts, we sometimes forget about it. So let's refresh our memory.

For that, Bored Panda invites you to visit 'The Fabulous Weird Trotters.' It's a Facebook page that regularly shares pictures of the "sometimes weird, sometimes fabulous, and every time fabulous weird" faces of Mother Nature.

They've got adorable plants, atmospheric ghost lights, creepy spiders, and much, much more. No wonder over 1.3 million people follow this page.

I live in Florida where the goal seems to be to pave the state... our motto should be "One State, One Slab of Concrete". A lovely wooded area, with many stately old oaks, was just cleared in my neighborhood for a medical office building. My neighbors cut down two majestic oaks that shaded the whole street, paved their front lawn, and parked trucks on it. It makes me so sad. I am moving away from here, it's just too heartbreaking.

I found the empty lot where my grandfather lived as a boy in Beaufort, South Carolina. The house was gone, but a tree like that was there. I like to think he and his sibs spent time in that tree. (The house was torn down by a developer. He moved another house off the land, tore down my family's house, then went bankrupt. Such a waste. The picture I saw of the house was almost as beautiful as this tree.

We're releasing this list on a special occasion. Almost exactly 50 years ago, on June 5-16, 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) was held in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the UN's first major conference on international environmental issues, and marked a turning point in the development of international policies.

When the participating 122 countries — 70 of them considered to be developing and poor — adopted the Stockholm Declaration, they essentially committed to 26 principles and an action plan that set in a multilateral environmental regime.

One of the overarching principles was that sovereignty should be subject to not causing harm to the natural world of other countries as well.

And this is some beautiful lizard, that's for sure ❤ The white under his mouth goes perfect with his color! It's sad they're endangered though :( If I could keep one as a pet I would. Well beauty can be deceiving you know ;) By no means am I knowledgeable about this, had no idea there was such a thing as "alligator lizards" to begin with. But, my guess would be the lizard is a baby, so at that point even if they do bite it's gonna feel more like a nibble than anything else; if not that, could also be the guy knew how to properly hold and handle one of these things. Either way, regardless I would hold and pet one too if I could, this size or even a little bigger. Call me crazy 🤷🏻‍♂️😁

These biers get bigger every year, as the birds return to them and add more nesting material. They end up really huge. We have a pair that has one of these in the woods behind our house. They hunt for rodents and snakes in the field between your backyard and those woods. Their babies are VERY LOUD too.

From a Pennsylvania government website:. A nest may exceed eight feet wide, 12 feet high and weigh more than two tons. Typical nests are five to six feet wide and more than three feet high. The bald eagle builds the largest nest of any North American bird.

    Beth L

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

This particular "nest" was built by humans as part of a display for Hueston Woods State Park. Real eagle nests don't hold together well enough to bear the weight of a full sized human, and often can't be separated from the tree that holds them.

Thanks for pointing it out. I would have, too, sunce rhis is obviously not eagle-built. We have a pair of European Sea Eagles (?) close by, and their nest is about five years old now and mostly grows in height. They just throw more stuff on.

I got one of these last year and had no idea what it was as it was the only one at a grocery store and had no info on it or the planter. It was really cheap and looked pretty rough. I planted it in my yard, and it grew a little through the summer, hibernated all winter, and went absolutely crazy this spring! It is huge with so many flowers, and I love it so much!!

The Stockholm conference started the contemporary "environmental era." In many ways, it took governance of planetary concerns to the mainstream. This resulted in over 500 multilateral environmental agreements being adopted in the last 50 years.

In fact, most of today's conventions related to planetary crises like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the whole environmental regime being implemented through the UN system trace their origin to the Stockholm Declaration.

The world is all tuned in to the Stockholm+50, to be held in the same city in June, but with a vastly changed planet, notwithstanding the rooting of the multilateral environmental regime.

On June 2-3, instead of discussing how the past half-century lived up to their previous vision, world leaders will talk about the next 50 years and the emergency actions that our planet so desperately needs.

"Human development is largely fuelled by a tripling in the extraction of natural resources, food production, and energy production and consumption over the past 50 years," says an advance draft copy of the document to be discussed at Stockholm+50.

A visualization of the next 50 years, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on May 4, 2020, states that "1 to 3 billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well over the past 6,000 y [years]."

The study explains how humans have resided in a “climatic envelope” characterized by ~11˚C and 15˚C of mean annual temperature and “the geographical position of this temperature niche is projected to shift more over the coming 50 y than it has moved since 6000 BP [before present]”.

According to Tim Lenton, co-author of the study, the situation looks unbelievable to many. Areas in North America and Europe that have comfortable temperatures would become as hot as North Africa. Tim warns: "Where we are headed is a place we don't want to go."

Let's hope that Stockholm+50 will come up with something that will ensure both humans and all the critters that we see on 'The Fabulous Weird Trotters' will get to keep our homes.

Black Beauty is a legitimate sunflower type, though they are often a shade of very dark red, this one is darker than average.

Such a beautiful fish. I don't know, but the edge of that sail sure looks spikey. I would get stuck if I were handling it. That fish is huge. I hope they sent him on his way and didn't keep him to eat or as a trophy.

It’s amazing how many places you find the same shapes and patterns in the universe. I mean, the top picture of the sun looks like a human egg. If you look closely in the mirror at the iris of your eye, the folds look like the nebula found in space. We really are made of the stuff of stars.

The exaggerated white lines are to make them visible to birds, so birds will avoid. Some large glass-surrounded buildings have stuck white string at various levels, so birds don't fly into them & kill/seriously injure themselves, replicating the spiderwebs.

They’re beautiful, but loud and nasty-tempered, believe me. I used to live in Arcadia, CA where the L A County Arboretum is located. The Arboretum has a resident flock of peacocks, which are designated as protected. They sometimes leave the Arboretum and wander surrounding neighborhoods. Residents just have to leave them to whatever they decide to do. Believe me, you will be in a world of s**t if you hurt one, worse if you hit one with your car, as they also have total right of way on the roads around the Arboretum.

I would not open the shutters again this season. Such a great insight into a hive! For ventilation then other windows will have to do... But I wonder if it is loud?

It's not loud. We had a hive in our bathroom wall (my father rearranged some pipes when remodelling and the brick fell out after he died; we didn't notice for a long time since it was on the side of the house where we don't go) and we never heard anything. Once in a while we'd have to rescue a confused bee from our house (I think the lights confused them) but other than that, it was great to have them there. We had them removed by bee experts (the ones that relocate the hive) when we had to have some plumbing done.

I would be stoked to have that. I once bought some mason bee larva to raise in my yard in a mason bee house (little tubes of cane, the lay eggs in tubes). Had to wait for the weather to warm up to put them outside so they hung out in my crisper drawer for about a month in a container. We had to keep them moist so my husband and I had to “water the bees” occasionally.

If it’s too much to handle, call a local beekeeper to remove them and add them to their own hives.

This is awesome. I would totally welcome this to happen at my house. How often do you get to see the inner workings of a hive, live from the comfort of your own home? But then again... I'm a weirdo who allows spiders to stay in the house & who feeds the jumping spiders who live in my mailbox and windows. Lol.

"Rhodotus Palmatus, Aka The Wrinkled Peach

Rhodotus is a saprobic mushroom, meaning it feeds off of dead organic matter, specifically fallen hardwood logs. It has a “circumboreal” distribution, and can be found in North America, Europe, North Africa, as well as Asia.
It is most likely to fruit during cooler temperatures after long periods of rainy weather. This beauty is not edible and hard to find, but wow what a cool looking mushroom!"

When Sperm Whales Need A Nap, They Take A Deep Breath, Dive Down About 45 Feet And Arrange Themselves Into Perfectly-Level, Vertical Patterns

They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017. French photographer Stephane Granzotto was documenting sperm whales in the Mediterranean for his book on the creatures when he came across these sleeping whales.

Indian Pipe - This Fascinating Plant (Monotropa Uniflora)

Indian Pipe - This Fascinating Plant (Monotropa Uniflora)

Definitely one of nature’s weird wonders. Because it has no chlorophyll and doesn’t depend on photosynthesis, this ghostly white plant is able to grow in the darkest of forests.
Many people refer to this strange plant as Indian pipe fungus, but it is not a fungus at all – it just looks like one. It is actually a flowering plant, and believe it or not, it is a member of the blueberry family.

If you're wondering how they survive without photosynthesis (IE they don't get their energy from sunlight): Indian pipe is a parasitic plant that survives by borrowing nutrients from certain fungi, trees and decaying plant matter. It's commonly found near dead tree stumps because it's living off of the dead tree!

The blueberry family (Ericaceae) has many parasitic members, which obtain carbohydrates by tapping into the tissues of other plants or by relationships with mycorrhizal fungi instead of by photosynthesis.

    Cyclocosmia (Trapdoor Spider)

    Cyclocosmia (Trapdoor Spider)

Also known as The Chinese Hourglass Spider, cyclocosmia latusicosta, are a type of trapdoor spider. They are ambush predators that patiently wait for their unaware victim to scurry past their lair before they strike and eat them as soon as they detect motion.

If threatened, they burrow themselves headfirst and back up plugging the hole with their abdomen. Their backside looks a lot like a coin and because of that they were often mistaken as coins by Chinese farmers who would come across them. They also resemble Aztec sun stones. Their bite is low risk (non-toxic) so if you ever pick one up, and it bites you, you should be fine.

Asian Water Monitors have venom gland inside their mouths to help digest food and protect themselves from predators. For extra added nightmares, they can also climb trees and jump down, possibly on you.
