Autism is talked about quite often, but very rarely is it portrayed in media, and even more rarely do we see it explained properly. That's where this amazing comics creator known as AspiGurl comes in. She creates funny, quirky, and sweet comics about her life and the struggles she runs into as an autistic girl. We get to read the comics and better understand from the view of a person with the developmental disorder.

The comics are colorful and have unexpected endings. The illustrations will probably make you laugh and relate many times. It's interesting to see the perspective of someone who sees social events, situations, and everyday life from a different perspective.

Aspigurl told us more about when and why she started creating these comics: "I had the idea for the comic back in 2018. It was almost April and I was kind of dreading the usual ableist posts that we always see around that time for Autism Awareness Month. My husband wtframecomics, who illustrates the comic, and I decided to post a comic each day of that April and we just kept making them!"

She also told us what motivated her to keep creating these comics: "One of the biggest motivations for making the comic is to give other autistic people content to relate to and maybe even illustrations that might help explain and express their lived experiences (same for non-autistics: it can help them have another point of view on autism.)"

On her website, Aspigurl describes herself as "a comic putting forward the voice of autistic people through anecdotes or reflections from everyday life. As there are as many autisms as there are autistic people, it seemed important to us to put forward this diversity by also receiving comic suggestions from autistic readers."

What do you think of these comics? Have they taught you anything new about autism and how people living with this disorder see the world? Perhaps you have autism yourself and can share your side and view? Tell us in the comments down below and don't forget to follow the artist on her social media!

My son has autism and I really hate when people try to compliment him by say, "He doesn't look autistic" Like WTF? Edit: I took out a vulgar rant because it wasn't illustrating my point, but I have trouble describing how rage inducing and heartbreaking this comment is.

Sia's movie was terrible. The only reason I saw it was because i was bored. And let me tell you I was FURIOUS! How could you cast someone who isn't on the spectrum or has no neurological problems as someone who does? Like that is unacceptable. She should be ashamed. >:(

Please don't blame Maddie (the actress). Sia forced her to, and at one point Maddie broke down crying because she was scared people were gonna think she was mocking autistic people.

This jab at Sia is one opinion. I find it unrealistic to believe that anyone, whether Autistic or not is going to be able to represent everyone's traits. The boy in Parenthood differs from the boy in Atypical, Sheldon and Amy could not be further from each other and yet awwwwwwwww. Brick from The Middle and his whispering and quirks are nothing like Forrest Gump. I watched Radio the other week again, after years, and while years ago I cried and loved it so much, it was through better understanding of the world now that it was even more of a next level story. While I have only seen the preview of Sias so far, I think that any movie or tv show with a character that has something different than others going on is a lesson in acceptance, and understanding. 30 years ago the characters portrayed in shows now would have most often been bullied, the object of ridicule, the strange character that everyone fears or torments...now they are the show, now we are better equipped for understanding.

True, no one can represent all of autism. It is a spectrum, as the name suggests. However, when actual autistic people want to help you, let them. I am autistic, and there are many good examples of Autistics in media. Dr. Shaun Murphy, Billy from the latest power rangers, and others. The key is representation and differentiating. You have to let your audience see the struggles, but also the joys. Try to be as ranged as possible. There is one technique i have unfortunately not seen as of yet, which is to include multiple characters on the spectrum, in order to show contrast between the spectrum. And let actual autistics help. We have a voice, let us use it. It is representation like this that embodies the negative stigma autism often carries. Like anything, there are ups and downs. Also, i have my own graphic novel available on amazon about autism called Imagination Team.

Just remember everyone is different. :) Also people might share one trait with the stereotype, but that doesn't mean they share them all. They might also fit the stereotype perfectly, or to a farther extent. There's so much about autism we are still learning, and lots we don't know. My friend, also autistic, is extremely extroverted and good with times and dates. Me, the exact opposite.
