Not just Norway, but the majority of European countries have similar standards for police training. There's a reason you don't constantly hear news about the police shooting unarmed people 20+ times outside the US.

In British Columbia, Canada you must have a minimum of 2 years education (law, sociology, stats, criminology, etc...) plus after you are hired you must have 9 months more of precise training.

Its similar in QC. You need a 3 years college diploma (police course) followed by 15 weeks at the QC police academy. Or university degree in law enforcement followed by the 15 weeks at the academy.

Norwegian police is usually unarmed. However at the moment they have temporary permission to be armed due to the fear of terrorism. But I remember being shocked the first time I went abroad and saw armed police as a child.

Reminds me of when I was teaching a course a Police Training College in Scotland. I was teaching IT staff, rather than cadets, but I had the misfortune to decide to go to the loo just as a group came out of one of their lectures. It was a requirement that they address anybody in a suit as "sir" and they weren't allowed to not acknowledge you either, even if you were only in your 20's. Most embarassing as I was desperate for a pee. I also learnt that the plural of "sir" is "sirs". So when two of us were walking down the corridor, we'd be addressed as "sirs". LOL

Why can't we do that here? My brother was in the Army for 13 years but wanted to do something else, so he used his GI Bill to go to college and got his degree in criminal justice and became a police officer (well, he applied, then went through academy training). He's going for his masters now.

I think most countries do police training. University doesn't automatically make a course more rigorous than a police academy or any other place of higher education.

But certain courses of study can greatly enhance your people skills which cops in the US definitely lack. Shooting mentally ill people for example happens quite regularly. Learning sociology and psychology would help. It would also help with dealing with minorities. A ten week police academy course should not be considered sufficient training for dealing with the public when you are armed with a gun.

We have "public services" courses at FE (post 16) level in the UK too. When I did my teaching qualification there were three police officers (in a training role) on the course too. In their teaching demos I have learnt how to take DNA samples and pepper spray people :D

In Taiwan, to join the police force, after high school you have to go through two years at the police academy. To be an officer, you have to graduate from the four year police university. Also, they are attracting women to join, to help defuse tense situations.

To be fair, officers in the US never stop taking classes...there's always a new course of training assigned. They aren't always logical...but they must take the course, nonetheless less. For instance, I live in a the Blue Ridge Mountains, and when my dad was an active duty officer, it was required they drive 4 hours away to the state capital, to take a course on proper driving technique in conditions requiring four wheel drive. The instructor learned a few new things during that course...

That sounds like a good idea. I’ve always felt that cops need more training and the bar raised. Like a four yr degree. It might weed out more of the incompetent morons I see with guns and badges every day.

This is a pretty cool factoid (micro was one of my favorite subjects in college) but it's not exclusive to influenza; viruses in general have a coating called a capsid that protects the material inside while allowing it to attach to the host cell and replicate/infect.

That's actually not surprising to me. The main way radiation kills living organisms is via DNA Damage. The most susceptible is DNA being decoded, as unused DNA is curled up and will less likely be damaged by radiation. The faster stuff grows the more susceptible to radiation damage (that's why radiating tumors works). As a bonsai is by design being kept withing very strict growing boundaries it has a much higher chance of surviving radiation than a normal growing counterpart. Plus fact: there is a bacterial species called Deinococcus radiodurans which as you may have guessed ist extremely durable towards radiation, they do this via very good DNA repair mechanism but also low metabolism and division rates.

Aside from the hypothesis being 80 years old, little dogs living half this, and chickens also being an outlier - us having longer lifespans than 35 years is nothing to do with modern stuff. People historically lived to 60/80/90, General Cao Cao was 65 when he died in the 3rd century of a brain tumour. Lif expectancy was lower in the past but that was because of the high infant mortality rate bringing the number down, not people dropping dead in their 30s.

This is a tendon, not a muscle. Everybody has it, might be visible, might not be. This story of extra useless muscle is pure b******t.

Wish this worked with chronic fatigue! (I’ve read this fact before and tried it on myself - it might give you some sort of temporary relief or distract you, but doesn’t work overall.)

I like, “ 30 days have September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31 except February… “ which has 28 and no one cares how the rhyme ends because you’ve worked out the month you wanted.

That is poorly worded. Of course they have muscles but not muscles related to motion. They do have tendons, which are strictly speaking part of a muscle, but now we're getting pedantic.
