The relationship between police and Americans, particularly black Americans, is complicated, to say the least. 'To protect and serve' is their purpose, but many believe that the reality proves otherwise. Naturally, the police are looking for ways to connect with the community to spread the word that they're not all bad guys and even have a sense of humor. Two police departments from the state of Kansas - Lawrence and Topeka PD's - found a unique way to connect with their communities. "What we have found is that using humor generates a lot more interest, generates a lot more replies and retweets and things like that if it's funny because people don't expect a police department to be funny," Public Affairs Officer Drew Fennelly from the Lawrence Police Department explained to the media. The two Twitter accounts have a huge following and people are actually looking forward to hearing what the police have to say. Scroll down below and see the list of the best tweets from Lawrence and Topeka cities' police departments and don't forget to vote!

See? Everyone lends a hand! It's down right neighborly! They might even have a warm place for you to sleep tonight.
This actually happened to my now-dead ex-husband and I was in the passenger seat to witness it. He was driving us somewhere one morning and saw a cop parked. He yelled out the window, "Get a real job, pig!" and flipped him off. I said, "Oh my god, Mike, what was the point of that! That guy is SO gonna pull us over! Why would you do that!!" Sure enough, ten seconds later, PEW-WEW-WEW. Cop pulled us over and it turns out they'd gone to the same high school and the cop remembered Mike. In a bad way. Apparently Mike and his circle of friends used to taunt and verbally bully this guy. So now the guy makes Mike do the whole car check - brake lights, blinkers, wipers, you name it - and gave us two tickets, for having a malfunctioning brake light and for not having the car registration on us. Needless to say, my dead ex-husband was an idiot. Did he learn from it, though? Nope.
Here in Finland it is legal to insult police but if you know the name of that police and insult him/her by using his/her name then it is illegal. The Finnish police just do not have enough time and resources to punish everyone who insults police.
Here in the US it is perfectly legal to insult a cop or gesture offensively at him (falls under freedom of speech, the Supreme Court decided), but in a select few local-level jurisdictions (oddly) it's illegal to use profanity or yell at someone. Colorado's El Paso County charges you with "harassment" if you curse at someone. So you could theoretically say, "Officer, your face is a crime against humanity and I think your mother should have aborted you," but you can't say, "F*** you, officer." Which is hilarious to me because the first sentence is clearly more offensive than the second.
Load More Replies...Maybe they did it to throw you off the scent? They will quietly leave in a week or two when people are less likely to suspect their new found wealth. Look for the guy that starts buying artisanal donuts instead of from their usual lower priced bakery. They won't be able to resist the lure of sweet glazed temptation....
Ah yes, the glorious war of insult between Police and Fire. We have both in the family, parties are interesting.
I used to warn my kids that "If you make me get out of my bath to come & deal with your nonsense, I will do it wet & naked & I will not be paying for your therapy!"
Please, would someone explain the TJler thing to me if you don't mind?
They are a troll that likes to be racist or just flat out rude
Load More Replies...I feel like if more police departments acted like these guys there would be a lot less hatred and distrust for the police... at least they would be a little bit more approachable but unfortunately (at least in my area) the cops take themselves too seriously oh and they have a tendency to draw on their "routine traffic stops" also which is a little ridiculous to me.
These cops have a great sense of humor! You need an at least slightly twisted sense of humor to be a good cop.
gotta love an agency with a sense of humor! apparently Topeka & Lawrence PD are the funniest we've got out there
