This Online Group Is Dedicated To Shaming Greedy And Delusional Landlords, And Here Are Their 40 Best Posts
If you've ever lived in a rented apartment, you know the drill. Mold is sneaking out from the corner of your bedroom? Call the landlord. Your only hot water source for the past week has been a kettle? Call the proprietor. But often, it sounds easier said than done.
Not only are landladies and landlords notorious offenders in not picking up the phone when you need them the most, they are also sometimes known for “look at all these property problems, I don’t give a damn.” Spoilers: zero damns given.
So no wonder many tenants are taking photo evidence as their last resort in a fight to make their houses somewhat more livable. And the corner of Reddit called LandlordLove [sarcasm detected] documents the most troubling cases of "leeching landlords" in hopes to "abolish the archaic practice of landlording where housing is not considered a right but a privilege to be paid for."
Of course, troublesome tenant and landlord dynamics don’t end there. Sometimes, the former are not innocent either when refusing to pay rent or subletting their couch to some random dude at uni. And although we may never find the truth, we can at least take a glimpse into what it takes.
Psst! More examples of how some landlords neglect their tenants can be find in our previous post right here.

As if the communication between landlords and tenants wasn’t hard enough already, the worldwide pandemic has put an extra strain on it. In a previous in-depth interview with Bored Panda, Joshua Browder, the CEO of DoNotPay, which is the world’s first robot lawyer, explained more about the current situation in the US.
“Landlords are straining their relationship because they are desperate. Across the world, there are laws in place that prevent evictions and allow tenants to get an extension on their rent.” According to Joshua, “landlords are using extraordinary tactics, including even checking a tenant's tax refund with the IRS, to get a payment.”

With the money you can make from the lawsuit you'll win (this is a felony), you can buy the entire property.
I don't understand how someone who willingly RENTS his apartment can consider spying on the people who'll live in it. If you rent it, then you have to accept the fact that is is rented.
I have a feeling they weren't doing that to watch their property. I think they did it to watch the people living there....in a creepy way

Landlord Would Like Picture Proof The Hot Water Isn’t Working
what kind of photo did you expect? One where you can feel what temperature it is through the screen?
I would expect a photo of broken water. I'm really disappointed by this one ;)
Load More Replies..."The hot water is broken" may also mean that the piping is broken and hot water is running everywhere. "How" is a legit question. Also, a better way to describe the situation with words is, "there's no hot water, it's running but it's cold".
This doesn't belong here. This is not an example of "landlord being a jerk"; rather, a case of "tenant expresses himself poorly". If you say "hot water is broken" the natural interpretation is that some part of the installation (the tap, some tube or valve, etc.) is broken. If you mean that the hot water isn't hot, say something to that sense, like in the last line ("the hot water is not hot" or "there's no hot water").
My tenants do this crap all the time. "My {insert} is broke" ... How about some info? Is it the hot water handle that broke? Is the hot water dripping and won't shut off ? Or is there no hot water coming through? Information Sharing is key.
In addition to common property problems that don’t always get sorted with one phone call, many tenants are feeling pressured to pay up during quarantine. However, Joshua suggested that tenants ignore the pressure since “There is nothing the landlord can do and they are best by not responding.”
“If the landlord keeps messaging or visiting the tenant, then they should document these actions and may even have the basis for a harassment claim.”

Load More Replies...If this was in the UK, then we currently have a ban on evictions, but it may have been before this came into effect. There are also legal procedures to go through before you can evict someone. Without reading the article in full it is not possible to say whether the landlord is an a*rsehole.
This was a shared house, he rented a room in the house that the landlord lived in. The landlord knew he was high risk because of his job. He hid he was sick from his landlord and landlord locked him out because he did not want to get sick. Same laws to not apply for lodger situations like this and eviction bans do not apply either. The captions on the person that shared and the link are very misleading and disturbing compared to the entire explained article. News/social media at its finest..
Load More Replies...We don’t know what he did that resulted in his eviction, let’s remember that.
Agree but there should have been an eviction moratorium at the time. I worked in property management for ages and this isn’t how evictions even work. Not sure about London but in USA it’s a months long process, not something that just happens overnight.
Load More Replies...While the things done to him and the dying of COVID is really awful, I fail to see the link between the two things.
But how is this the landlord's fault though? Being inside an apartment wouldn't have guaranteed surviving the coronavirus. I think this is just another case of BBC's yellow journalism. In no way is his death related to being evicted from his apt.
Because eviction is a legal process, not a “I just changed da locks now he gone” type of a deal.

Imagine Paying For Someone’s Negligence

If she is in the US I hope she sent him her hospital bill.
When I moved out, my last landlord charged me $80 for leaving 2 sofas that were there when I moved into the house. When I asked why they would do that, they basically said it was because there was nothing I could do about it. I was so ready to be done with them that I just let it go. I hope they enjoyed their $80 extra dollars. Jerks!

Mask Off
In Britain the deposit has to be put into a holding account for this very reason.
All landlords: If I could just get one good tenant. When they actually get a good tenant. Landlord: No, not now.
Take pictures of everything on the day you move in. Walls, appliances, windows, literally everything. Send the pictures to the landlord or rental agency on the same day. They will still try to keep your deposit, but it will be easier for you to fight it.
Not sure where the poster is from but in the UK the landlord has to put the deposit in a government-approved tenancy deposit scheme so they never see the cash. If there is a dispute at the end of the tenancy, the tenancy deposit people will not release the funds until the issue is resolved.
In a lot of US states the landlord has to put the deposit in escrow (I know bc I had tenets at a house I owned). But even if you video the whole place before you move in and it’s absolutely perfect, who has the money to fight the landlord not returning the deposit?
I've only been lucky with one tenant who get her full deposit back. The most troublesome one was the family that sub-let the rooms and duplicated the keys but "cannot remember" where they are. The husband even tried to argue it was within his right to do so when the tenancy contract clearly stated otherwise. I had to change every lock to make sure the next tenant don't get robbed because there were keys out there. Their deposit barely covered that.
I thought it was normal for tenants to change the locks when they move in? This is what I've done in every apartment I've lived in and it is advised to do so for your safety

( " usual" wages here are around 800 BGN, i was getting 700 at the time, my bf was getting 1000, and we had a flatmate so we were paying 2/3 of the rent basically) my previous landlord not only did want 1000BGN rent a month originally, but also wanted 150 more when i moved in RIGHT when the pandemic started. not only this but she kept all of the deposit money (1000 bgn) on account of " idk how but you managed to break the sink. and the lightbulb in the bedroom is out." we changed the toilet seat on her demand before we left, we cleaned the place properly, the sink was scratched on the inside but NOT broken (when i say "scratched" take it as i say, literally just scratched, not even deep) and she had made a demand she'd let people view the apartment a month before we moved out!!! we were paying 1150 bgn to LIVE there and she wanted to let people go inside ( no matter if we're outside or in, and what were we doing). she was coming in whenever she'd like without asking or knocking too

Won’t Anybody Think Of The Poor, Unfortunate L A N D L O R D S ?!
The job comment was rude and uncalled for. For most small landlords who own investment properties (houses) or rent space in their own house, this is their job or a major source of income! They still have to pay the mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities and maintenance of the space isn't rented. Most lease's allow for a landlord to show the space three months prior to the termination of the lease so that the place has a better chance of being rented quicker. It can be quite costly to have an unrented apartment. I understand situations change, but the renter in this case should be apologetic not snarky.
To be honest, this is not as clear cut as the other ones. You usually have a notice period in which you have to notify the landlord you will not be extending the lease, if the renter left it right until the last minute, this isn't fair on the landlord.
not sure this counts as being a landlord but i bought a house with a basement unit. i was recently widowed. i worked two jobs as well as receiving rent. i made enough from all 3 incomes to have a roof over my head. i've had my fair share of crappy tenants. i just want ya'll to know that there are some good landlords out there. i hope that all ya'll that had the crappy ones will be blessed with much better!!
We rent out our previous home. The rent pays for the mortgage. If our tenant stopped paying then we would be paying two mortgages. It would definitely we difficult for us.
Load More Replies...That is his job, not all landlords are bad, and they normally have mortgage's to pay on their properties.
Well I guess that depends how much notice you gave as the tenant. You have to give 1 month's notice here. Otherwise you pay another month's rent.
This needs some context. Actually if the man's job is his property rental, then his reaction is understandable.
If the notice was within the agreed term, then the landlords to comply. If not, and the tenant chooses to leave within a shorter time than agreed on a lease, the tenant is responsible to pay a certain amount to the landlord prior to departure. In Australia anyhow!
Are You Sure?
In the US, you pay for a mold expert to come in, then they bill your landlord for their services after notifying the state licensing/etc. people that the properties are unsafe. There are mold expderts who will not charge *you* at all. I found one once.
I was in an apartment where the black mold was dripping down the wall from the vent. I called the managers office and I called the City Health Dept. NOBODY was interested in coming to see this crap dripping down the wall!
This black mould is actually dangerous to health and the place should be really evacuated and professionally cleaned and mould eradicated and the cause of the moisture located and repaired. Too many people are forced to Iive with mould and are unwell. it is very common. Not right but common.

I can tell you ............for 93 pounds a week. LOL Sorry, just had to.
Josh expects landlords to be much more compliant in order to “keep the tenant for the longer term.” This may change some of their common tactics like charging a late fee if the tenant was unable to pay their rent on time. However, these are just forecasts and the overall dynamics may well stay just as problematic.
I'm Pretty Sure This Is Illegal
I used to have electric heating in the apartment I lived in and had to pay the hydro bill. The landlord ran a business in the bottom part of the building. He could have helped heat our apartments but instead he would turn down the main heat when he would leave a night. He did this even when he decided to get the windows replaced in the middle of February... his office assistant was nice enough to turn it back up when he left so that we could get some sort of relief.
I worked at a hospital like this. The only way I could get the temperature changed in a patient room was to call Maintenance.

It's probably a real estate management company hired by the property owner. It seems this one has a sort of guaranteed revenue service, likely at a large premium.

Landlord Commits A Federal Crime To Try And Get Rent
So illegal...and the moratorium on rent still exists in the US. If your income/job is affected by Covid-19 and you are unable to pay rent, it is illegal for landload to evict you. Christians Love Abandoning Their Morals When It Comes To C A P I T A L
People don't seem to understand, that even though they got out of paying rent for X amount of months, the landlord still has to pay the mortgage to the bank, otherwise the property will be foreclosed on. The landlord then loses the property, and the tenant still ends up out on the street. And generally that rental income is what is paying the mortgage.
That makes sense. But I feel like the landlord should have tried to work something out for her.
Load More Replies...Maybe the landlord is living of that very rent and struggling also in the crisis? Not every landlord lives in wealth. We cannot judge based on a single Tweet!
Many landlords are struggling too, so without more details about the situation, it's hard to put this only on the shoulders of the landlord who might be struggling to pay the mortgage.
What does his religion have to do with you not paying your rent?
Well to be fair, we don't know why they're being evicted. So to call this landlord "greedy and delusional" just because the renter is a mom with a sick kid, is pushing it. For all we know she hasn't paid rent in a year.

Left The House This Morning With A Small Leak Dripping From The Ceiling. I Informed My Landlord And He Said He Would Take A Look At It Today. I Came Home At Night To This

I was living in a council home in the UK. I noticed water coming into the kitchen and reported it. Nothing was done. I moved out 2 months later as I bought a home. Later my old neighbours rang me to inform me the whole of the upstairs had fallen though. All because the lazy cheapskate council could not repair a leak. I laughed for days.
He was in for a surprise too? The repairs would cost heaps now. Was it fixed and properly as pointless to have a property falling to bits and not rentable!

Load More Replies...Well it kinda happened to me and my ex a few years ago x'D I kinda laugh about it but at the time it was infuriating. The case was, we lived in the whole big flat and paying still the same amount as before but we were without a lease for two summer months. There were two other rooms that our landlord wanted to rent and she really did invite the tours just at any time without telling us. She also had some bit of repairs so random workers could be bangin at our door (to the room, already being inside the flat!) to get some info from us or to ask if they could have a coffee x'D At least our room had its own lock so we could be safely naked there x'D Well there weren't really that many tours since no student would need to rent a room in the summer holidays so it wasn't even as much as like 10 tours in all two months, so wasn't that bad and we had whole flat to ourselves ridiculously cheap. And were ready for a lease for another year. We were kinda poor back then so it worked.
my previous landlord tried to do this, for a month tho!! said she would let people to come see the apartment at whatever time of the day they were comfortable with.. i told her she absolutely CAN'T do that cuz we were still paying full insanely huge rent to live there, so she can't have people over while we live there!! she didn't bring people in while we were there BUT she was coming in whenever she'd like which was crazy!!!! we were sleeping, she rings the bell and we wake up but we were cuddling so we weren't opening the door. she rang once again and then started unlocking the door from the outside. Came in and came to the bedroom.. WHO DOES THAT!!!!! ( she thought we weren't home cuz we weren't opening the door so she'd come take a peak in the apartment....) SO GLAD we moved out!!!! " just coming to see if you've watered my plants", " just coming to measure the window frame", etc...

Any Tips On Making A Couple Homeless Before Christmas
Air Bnb has been devastating in many cities - these a**holes are buying up rental properties just to Air Bnb them and people who really need a rental home are being locked out of the market. Even apartments in big buildings/complexes can be rented & used for Air Bnb - pay 1k/month rent, figure the utility cost, divide by 4 weeks/month, add a bit for profit and bam - put it on Air Bnb. I have no sympany for these Air Bnb jacka**es.
Really? I didn't know it was that bad, I need to look into this. I thought it was a cool gig to be able to make more and pull yourself out of 9 to 5 drudgery but I guess it's mostly big businesses doing this? Also the area I live in is a massive vacay/weekend trip destination so maybe that's why they didn't seem so intrusive to me
Load More Replies...if they did get kicked out, then a small consolation is that the landlord wouldn't have earned much from airbnb the last year...
I do not think this person actually thought of that..she was looking at better possibilities for her self.. The idea is to let them know the lease will. not be renewed. Many people move at Xmas/January in Australia. But leases are the'supposed security' for all ..
There is actually a good and ethical way to go about this. Sometimes the need arises to empty out a rental for one reason or another. Buying them out of their lease agreement or just simply asking if they would want out of their current lease may have been an appropriate course of action. To do so for an air bnb is kind of nonsense though.
asshole, AND idiot in one - prefering short time profit over long term profit AND credibility..
He's an asshole, but it's not short term profit. With long term tenants he can only raise the rent ever so often - renting to tourists he can charge whatever people are willing to pay at the moment. He has much more control over the property, and can change back when it's not working out. That's why landlords all over the world use this filthy tactic.

In the Uk if your property value goes up, it may put you in a different council tax band so if it was here, and the rental agreement included the landlord paying council tax/bills then its reasonable to expect the rent to go up a bit too.

Load More Replies...You are correct. The tribe of Levi (the Levites) were assigned to work in the temple. The other tribes were to give a tithe of 10% to provide for their care since they were serving everyone and did not have an inheritance of land like the other tribes did. It has literally nothing to do with a landlord raising rents. Actually, the opposite is the case - the law had severe things to say about people who were lenders or landlords or in positions of power who abused those under their power.
Load More Replies...a tithe is 10%. It doesn't make sense increasing the rent though.

Spiders don't deserve anything even close to all the sqishing, painting, burning that assholes apply on them all the time.
I know that in my heart, but I'm still deathly terrified of them. One of my top 3 fears are spiders.
Load More Replies...I feel bad for the spiders. By the looks of it they are daddy long legs which are harmless
They're totally harmless ... and all other spiders who live in europe are, too. And, even if their bite might cause a slight discomfort similar to a bee's sting - who freaks out and paints bees? No one. Spiders don't deserve their treatment. We know better. What makes us not do better? Just don't get it. Leave'em alone, and they won't bother you most of the time. Most spiders aren't even visible to us, due to their choice of habitat (behind a cupboard, above a shelf, ...).

For those defending the trash: Sex requires informed and willing consent. By having the option of being homeless or sleeping with your landlord, though you are making an informed decision to not be homeless, you are being coerced into doing the act, and thus not willing, which withdraws the consent, making it rape.
You could apply that same logic to anyone who has to work to stay off the streets.

Wow. What an arsehole. The nerve of him asking you not to sell drugs or give addicts or possible criminals the key to the main door. What an absolute monster.
This is bs - the landlord needs to step up & notify the police, start eviction proceedings & get the drug dealers out. Posting a sign won't stop them. And even if it's Section 8 housing, there are rules & regulations that will allow the landlord to kick them out!
And for international pandas, 'Section 8' housing used to be known in the U.S. as welfare projects for the poor - similar to council housing.

My best friend in college grandfather died and left her and her brother 3 properties that he owned and rented out. So, she is now a "Winner" for....what? Being born in a family with a landlord to give her property? That is why this is stupid...one can rent for the simple convenience of not having to maintain a property or pay taxes...one can be a landlord from the pure luck of having someone die and give you the house. But, I would not expect someone sleazy enough to slap this on their car to be smart enough for things such as nuance.

Sympathy Seeking Landlord Is Def The A-Hole
I think context is needed here. "AITA for giving a negative reference to a tenant who trashed my home, refused to pay rent for 7 months and smeared sh1t up the wall as she was finally evicted?". Or "AITA for giving a negative reference to a perfectly lovely tenant who always paid her rent on time, but I wanted to increase my income so she's looking for somewhere else to stay and I'm bitter about the dent to my wallet".
From the original reddit thread - the tenant was paying late, destroying property, breaking HOA rules and refusing to pay for the fines, moved other people into the property without consent. From the description, h was being honest when giving references. The AITA thread ws concluded as NTA.

His Hands Are Like Gelatin Desserts
Being a landlord is work. Often a full time job. If you own rental units and don't want to bothered, you can hire someone to manage it for you. You will have to pay them, because of the multitude of tasks required to provide legal housing. Ya know, the stuff you complained about on this post. Fix plumbing problems TODAY, is just one example. Years ago my ex and I owned rental property. We were living almost paycheck to paycheck. Just two months without receiving rent would take every penny we had. Three months, we would lose the property. Then what? If rent can't be paid, someone will get the financial hit. No evictions --- it is the landlord, not all of them are rich.

It's the same dude - right post was first, stating he would inherit his father's rental properties and the later post on the left says he built it from the ground up.

Unfortunately that's how it works. When a building is sold, the new owner has the OPTION to honor existing leases. I don't really think that's right, but the law is the law.
Not here in the US. The new owner has to abide by the terms of the original lease. (I think)

I cant' even read that article till the end. This is simply too infuriating. I am fuming, I need to hit a landlord with a heavy chair.
The worst part is knowing that in most cases the police or court will do nothing to protect the tenants. We live in a roten society.

I would rather return the security deposit if possible than running serious repairs, changing locks, doing major cleaning and stuff. But a lot of the tenants I had are simply not that courteous. So far only one lady kept the house such a good condition, I did not need to do anything besides hiring a cleaning crew after moving day. I've had people breaking pipes, furniture, doors even the floor tiles. One idiot even jerry rigged some wiring dangerously.
Oh no, that doesn't sound good. In my country (Finland) it is rare for the tenant to damage anything, unless they are addicts etc. Even the house deep cleaning is done by the tenant when moving out!

downvote me all you want, but whatever the context, the people in the comment sections of this thread honestly sound like first graders who just learned how to insult people and swear. moral of the story? calm down, people.
BP users get dumber by the moment. Even some of the old regulars just seem to have let their brains wander off. I hope when the kids go back to class, things can go back to normal.

All my friends who have a mortgage have been given deposits by family members, mine and my husband's family are not in a position to do this and neither do we expect them to. It's just such a frustrating situation!
We were in a similar position, but luckily for us we live in a fairly cheap city. We lived in a one bed flat £400pm until we saved enough to buy a house. But I know so many people that are living in 300k houses simply cuz mum/dad/aunt were able to give them deposits no questions asked. Our house is tiny but at least we got it, I also know so many people that are stuck renting
Load More Replies...This list is appalling. HOWEVER, I do think there should have been some thought put into rent freezes - were there also mortgage payment freezes? At least in the UK, few landlords own the rented property absolutely outright (look up buy-to-let mortgages). So the landlord still has expenses that need to be covered as well. It's no good to the tenant if the landlord cannot make the mortgage payment and the bank forecloses - the tenant still ends up homeless. Rent increases just to line a landlord's pocket should be outlawed, and if they don't look after the maintenance of the property (as contractually obligated) the tenant should be entitled to compensation for their rent. And security deposits should be returned if the property is still in a livable condition. There need to be protections in both directions - not for nothing are there shows about slum landlords and tenants from hell
I don't want anyone to think I'm endorsing buy-to-let by the way. I think it's a scummy practice that has unnecessarily pushed up property prices beyond the reach of most first time buyers. I just also happen to know "landlords" who are paying the mortgage on two properties because they have had to relocate and selling wasn't a good option - renting out the second property at least covered the mortgage on that property.

People who just deliberately don’t pay rent, or have like 10 extra people living there, who went they move out leave behind three dumpsters worth of garbage including used diapers? There’s scummy landlords, and scummy tenants. Unfortunately it never works out that a bad landlord gets a bad tenant.
this makes me want to be a landlord, just not an asshole one. the one i want to be is one who actually fixes the problems instead of going "oh you disagreed with me, okay get out." the landlords on here are just assholes.
No landlord tells good money to get out just because they disagree. None. People want money more than respect.

If you don't enjoy fixing/ replacing things when they break down, then you should probably be selling houses instead of renting them.
I have to say something good about landlords: I hated renting from them so much I worked my tail off and bought my own place so I would never have to deal with a landlord or landlady again.
I feel the opposite. I’m so done with property ownership. I have money and I want to rent forever. Nicer places and less of a headache, more flexibility, and someone to clean up what’s broken. It’s a much better life.
