21 Posters Showing What Women Should ‘Thank A Feminist’ For
418Kviews
The world is celebrating International Women's Day. So you know what that means. Lithuanian police officers are probably giving tulips to female drivers again. But an online feminist community called the School of Feminism has suggested another cool way to commemorate the occasion.
Posters. The organization uploaded a series of designs to the internet, listing some of the biggest achievements that societies' have earned in their quest towards equality. "Thanks to feminists, women can vote, work, abort [their pregnancies], divorce [spouses], wear pants, read any book [they like], use birth control, take out a loan..." Anyone who wants to use the posters can download and print out the designs or simply share them online.
"There are still many rights to fight for to achieve real equality between women and men around the world," School of Feminism concluded. "Let's keep up the fight."

"There are many things [women can] thank feminism for," School of Feminism told Bored Panda. "From being able to vote to wearing pants, these are just a few obvious things that we do not consider on a day to day basis and that is why our simple and clear message has been so viral. But despite of all our achievements, we continue to live in a tremendously macho and unequal society. Do not forget that there still are many rights to fight for to achieve real equality throughout the world."
"Everyone has the potential to make a change in the world," they said. "When we released this series, we didn’t expect such a huge reaction because we didn’t have a community to share the project with." However, people in the internet found it despite the low like count on School of Feminism's social media pages. "We published the images on our personal accounts and they began to spread quickly."
In one week School of Feminism’s Instagram account has grown from 0 to 13k followers and their Facebook page has reached 21k, and the numbers keep climbing.
"We are receiving messages from all around the world, including Spain, Portugal, Mexico, France, Italy, Chile, Poland, Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, thanking us thanks and asking us to translate the posters into their native languages."
"We’ve ignited a worldwide conversation about feminism, and people are actively commenting and sharing their points of view thought direct messages and comments. To us, this is a great achievement because there still are people who do not understand that Feminism, as Angela Davis said, 'is the radical idea that women are human beings.'"
"We firmly believe that through [active] communication we can translate the concepts of Feminism into something so simple, everyone will be able to understand and embrace it."
After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference suggested that Women's Day be held annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. Then, socialist movements and communist countries began celebrating that day until it was officially adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
In a lot of tribes is was the women who hunted and women who were warriors too. Women's role in society as a worker has changed over the years for many reasons. Women went to work during war, because the men were not there to do it. Queen Elizabeth was a Mechanic during WWII.
The official theme for International Women's Day 2019 is: 'Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.' "At a time when innovation is dominant, shaping and changing the way people live in every part of the world, we have to be intentional about its use to positively impact the lives of women and girls," UN Women stated. "That means making sure they are not only consumers of innovation, but take their place as innovators. With their engagement, both design and execution of solutions can address the unique needs of women and girls, from the creation of decent work to delivery of products, services and infrastructure for women in all walks of life. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change” puts innovation at the centre of efforts to reflect the needs and viewpoints of women and girls and to resolve barriers to public services and opportunities."
Yes, but... A good friend of mine, she is having three kids and wants to leave her husband (this is happening right now), because of various reasons, of which one is abuse. The thing is, at least in the US, a divorce is probably as expensive as a marriage, if not more expensive (depending on where you live, it varies between 10 and 2,000 Dollar. If you can't afford it, can't afford a lawyer, if you were the one raising the kids and haven’t been working, you have a problem. You might be leaving your partner, but you can't get a divorce, unless you can afford it one day. It the same old problems like back in the days - To leave someone you either need the support of family or friends, or you are damned to at least stay married. Often, as a woman you can’t just leave.
"Remoteness need no longer be an exclusion issue when mobile money technology and digital payments can deliver social benefits to even the most remote households. Lack of roads need not prevent life-saving medication from reaching patients, with smart inventions like 15-year old Nigerian Eno Ekanem’s drone to make drops to rural areas, controlled by SMS messaging."
Also thank LGBTQ+ movements, they made same sex marriage legal!! Not all women want to marry males. :)
According to the statement, women and girls must have opportunities to contribute to making real change, and help shape the policies, services and infrastructure that impact their lives. "As we have seen from recent marches for climate action in Europe and elsewhere—they are ready to do so."
Huge deal. As someone who was born in Germany many moons ago, I am happy to say, that we have a female chancellor since a few years now. Not everyone is happy about her, especially lately, but that doesn't change the fact, that it is a good thing. Now that my family is living in Atlanta (close to), I am sure that it is only a matter of time, until the US will have a female president as well (maybe even as a follow-up to Trump). I think, in the past it didn't have much to do with the fact that they were women, but more with them not being the "best" option. However, I am sure the day will come.
Feminists is about giving women rights. The right to make a choice. It's not about picking a side on a controversial topic.
But a woman still can't walk around topless like a man can. Edit: I wasn't choosing sides, I was just pointing something out. And not because it's illegal or whatever but because women wouldn't feel safe doing so in places a man might be seen without a shirt.
I can remember my Mom asking my Dad for his credit card, as at the time woman weren't allowed to have one of their own. I remember this vividly because of what happened next. Mom took me shopping for school clothes, shoes etc. When she went to pay, the sales man asked if my Dad knows Mom had his credit card. Things escalated, It got very heated, the men were using language that was worse than rude. The manager threw up his hands and said "god save me from educated women" Then he said cash or the highway. We left. I'll never forget this. I had never seen my Mom as angry as she was that day. She behaved like the lady she was, I was so proud of her. After all these years I still get angry just thinking about it. Do thank a Feminist, thank my Mom and your Mom.
Interesting story how long ago and what country was it. I thought with credit card being quite a recent thing that they would have always been open to both sexes, eye opener.
Credit cards aren't so recent.. They started issuing them back in the 50's. Back then wives were expected to stay home, take care of the kids and make sure there was a hot meal waiting on the table for their husbands. Feminists in the 60's and 70's are a large part of why those viewpoints have changed.
Early 60's/late 50's , USA
This country, and it was still happening in the early ''70's,. I remember.
too often, people forget that this misogynistic crap is still within living memory within "1st world", westernised countries.... it ain't that long ago that women had VERY FEW choices..... I am thankful every day for the women before me, that have enabled me to earn, save, work, learn, control whether I reproduce, and choose who / if I marry. Please say a huge "thankyou" to your mum, for being one of the many who came before me, who have enabled me to have as many choices as I do. <3
When was this? Wow!
My parents got divorced in 1975 and he had to give permission for her to get a credit card. At first he would not agree and finally did.
In Australia the Bankcard was introduced in the early 70's. I remember this because I was working in the same buildingas the company working on setting up the process. I asked questions about this as it was a new concept. This was before ATM's, banks closed at 3pm and shops at 5.30. Saturday trading was 9 to 12. No Sunday trading.shopping and banking difficut if you were working as banking had to be done in your lunch hour, and grocery shopping on Saturday morning.
This was going to be my addition: Thank a Feminist you can have a credit card, i.e. get credit, in your own name...I was in college before this was widely available in the US.
Thank a feminist if you can have a bank account without a man co-signing for it. Thank a feminist if you have paid maternity leave/family leave. Thank a feminist for many things, but most of all, thank feminists for pushing to make rape a crime, and not a character assassination...
YES!
Is it just me or did this post bring a lot of trolls to the light? A lot of negativity around here. Probably unsecure men, afraid of strong women!
Yeah, people have a lot of time on their hands, downvoting every comment. It's hard to be an asshat in public now with people calling you out or filming you on their phone; so this is all they got. (Shrug) It's pitiful but what can you do?
internet anonymity sadly reveals people's true selves the Fact that your getting a lot of trolls is sadly a sign that despite how politically correct people "act" a lot of people aren't as womens rights minded as they might lead you to believe
Yes, there are men afraid of empowered women. Some of them are just raised to be assholes by asshole parents. Some of them are bitter men who, through failed relationships with women (or the failure to attain one), have decided that women are the problem. They’re usually socially awkward and insecure types who don’t grasp that women are people, and not some alien species that needs to be “handled”. Some of them even started out well-intentioned, but grew bitter & angry after having unfortunate or awful experiences (either they were unlucky in who they pursued, or they chose poorly, just as anyone might do when trying to attain a relationship partner). As they spend more & more time alone, and under pressure from toxic masculinity, they find online groups of misogynistic men to act as their tribe of sorts. Go look at “the red pill” on Reddit some time. It’s not effectively different from a cult. They have their own terminology, and they prey on the vulnerable to increase their numbers.
Or do you just call people 'trolls' when you don't agree with them?
thank you. You are amazing
Actually lots of selfclaimed "strong women" are the one insecured or the opposite side of the spectre - female chauvinists/sexists but they pass by the blind eye the very same way lots of former victims do (racists other than palefaces, some lgbtqa+ members, natives etc)

Im not a man or insecure and i still disagree. Early day feminists made advancements current new wave feminists are just the biggest bunch of whiney, useless arseholes
This ain't true. You are generalizing. Yes, there might be people, organizations, or trends, where someone or something labels itself as feminists and they use that for their own interests. But that has nothing to do with feminism itself, but with the times we are living in, the media, the internet und especially social media as well. You can find this behavior with literally everything. People abusing a good cause for something wrong or for their advantages. However, that doesn't mean that their is real feminism and people who are fighting for women's rights. You won't find them on magazine covers or in the mainstream media. They fight without someone following each of their steps. You might want to check out "third-wave feminism" and find out that you probably won't know many of the names related to it. Still, those women changed a lot. Overall one has to admit that times changed and to fight for a/ your cause, you have to find new ways, to gain enough support and attention.
