40 Times Gravestones Were So Uniquely Amazing That People Had To Share Them Online
Interview With ExpertDeath is an unavoidable part of our life cycle, and whether we like it or not, it catches up with all of us. Saying that one final goodbye to someone close to you is never an easy burden, but people have always found ways to make it just a bit better.
There is a lot of beauty in that. For example, if you were to take a walk through a cemetery and observe all that's around, you'd probably notice some very unique ways in which people choose to honor their loved ones. But of course, you can also do that without leaving your home because there's a subreddit just for this purpose. Scroll down to see the best pictures posted there!

My dad served in 'Nam too - I am forever grateful that he came home (it was before I was born, but still.) A lot of his friends did not make it home, and that haunted him. I know it is a hokey phrase, but - thank you for your service.

Famous headstone of Leonard Matlovich, kicked out of the Air Force when he went public.
In human years, that's around 90. Pretty impressive!

Cemeteries have quite a unique feel compared to most other places we visit. After all, their purpose is to be the final resting place for those who have passed away, so they often offer a calm shelter from an otherwise chaotic world.
This subreddit, CemeteryP***, is exactly the kind of place where people who appreciate this calmness and the sights it brings meet. The group has over 143,000 members, yet there are only two rules: asking members to include context with their submissions and upload their sightings in static images.
Everything else, just like in the rest of the Safe For Work P*** Network on Reddit, flows smoothly without the need for any strict guidance, so if you go there looking for drama, you're probably in the wrong place.
My father, consummate narcissist, has "I walk with God" on his marker. My mom refused my pleas to have hers say "Yeah, no."
My Grandma from my Dad's side had " Beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother " and Mom almost died laughing the first time she saw her headstone. She was Mom's MIL and treated her as well my Dad, her own damned Son, like worse then dogshit. Mom and I used to refer to her as: The Wicked Witch of the South, for a really good reason. Mom told me that the only reason she went to the funeral was to make sure the Old Hag was really dead and staying that way. Because if anyone could pull a Lazarus it would be her just to be spiteful and torture everybody. As we walked into the house coming back from the funeral we sang " Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead". I had the most awesome Mom you could ever want or ask for. 😂😂
Children's headstones always hurt to see. My heart goes out to his family.
You can definitely tell this little angel's parents adored him and want everyone to know how awesome he was.
Took me a while to comprehend the fact that buddy was just 10 yrs old..!! May Almighty bless your family with strength..
It's a phrase meant to imply the person instantly befriends everyone they come across. As soon as they meet someone new they become a new friend.
Load More Replies...Looks like it is a real photograph hermetically sealed, or a ceramic copy of a photo (also looks like it is under glass).
Load More Replies...There are a number of places on Etsy (and elsewhere) that will engrave your pet's picture on a black granite headstone.
My pup’s ashes got turned into several beautiful glass pendants for each of us family members 😊. I had my grandma’s ashes done like that as well and the glassmaker made a barely-noticeable mistake on one pendant so she made another and sent me both - I keep one in the kitchen on a tiny memorial wall art piece so my Baba (who taught me to cook) can cook with me, and one dangling off the rearview mirror in my car because it’s actually her car that I inherited when she passed away last year. So she drives with me in her car and keeps me safe and I can squeeze the pendant every morning and say “good morning Baba!” Surprisingly affordable for a memorial piece, I paid maybe $150 CAD and just spread the rest of her ashes in her favourite spot. Cheaper than a grave and headstone but still a meaningful memorial ❤️
Load More Replies...All these kid ones are making me sad. Especially when they are the same age as my son like this one. I can't even imagine the pain the parent must have been in.
That... that's a cat, friend. The photo in the center is a kitty and the name at the top says "Devil". I'm the first person who will tell you that pets are just children with fur (o how I have grieved the losses of my furbabies) but this one is not a human "kid".
Load More Replies...The views in these cemeteries are definitely fascinating, but the color tone is usually still quite a bit more gloomy for those who are affected by the losses personally. And yet, death is actually a very interesting subject with many different views on it.
To discuss this aforementioned subject, Bored Panda reached out to Hanan Parvez, a psychologist with a deep passion for better understanding the human mind and sharing that knowledge with the rest of us.
She may have been from the silent generation, but she definitely got the last word in!

Janice was never seen again.
From findagrave.com: "A convicted murderer and known pedophile, confessed to her killing in the 1970's. He claimed that he buried her in an area near Lawrence, Massachusetts. Her body has never been discovered and the suspect was never charged in her disappearance. He died in prison in 1999." Heartbreaking!

As a parent this is a nightmare worse than death.
Load More Replies...I think many of have heard of the heartbreaking numbers of missing women/girls, but not everyone knows how this scourge has especially affected Native American women. In the US, 2.9 % of the population are Native Americans, while indigenous women make up 11 % of the cases of *missing* women, and 16 % of female *homicide* victims are indigenous. In Canada, indigenous women are up to 400 % (!) more likely to go missing than other Canadians, and between the years 2000-2015, the homicide rate among indigenous women was almost six times higher than among other Canadian women. 4 % of Canadian women are indigenous, while, in 2018, 37 % (!) of female homicide victims were. It’s absolutely horrifying, and police racism and apathy is believed to be one contributing factor.
Load More Replies...We began by delving into the question of why death, especially of those close to us, can be so hard to accept, to which the expert answered by explaining that our success in life is often determined by our family ties. "Our dependence on close family is highest when we're young and decreases with age, but it never completely disappears."
Hanan further compared losing a loved one to losing a part of yourself, which is as impactful at the genetic level as it is at the identity level. "It's like losing a body part. You know you can't get it back, but the pain is extreme."
Still, people do get over it. It is a natural part of life, and it's safe to say that everyone is aware of this, at least to some extent. "However, the grieving process is essential because you want to acknowledge the relationship you had with the deceased person," added the psychologist, explaining that this process is more about being grateful for the person who was in your life rather than wishing they hadn't passed away.

What I find most interesting is that, while it is a grave marker, both women are still very much alive.
There's a grave in Spain with a heartbreaking story. Beginning of the twentieth century, a very young couple couldn't afford to get married and the priest wouldn't do it for free. They lived together and had children. She died very suddenly and the priest refused to bury her in the cemetery, as she was a sinner (!). Overnight, her neighbours built a mini cemetery for her in the forest, where she still gets visitors.
Wow, that is such a beautiful statue! (It's still called a statue, right? Regardless of whether it´s standing up or laying down?)
"Sculpture" works...but according to the definition of "statue", it is also fitting in this case 🤔

im surprised disney let them get away with having a character on the headstone. disney is real litigious when it comes to that stuff
Disney probably realized that they’d get a lot of backlash for making the character be removed
Load More Replies...Unique gravestones like the one we see in these pictures can help people cope with loss and better remember those they have lost. Creating a headstone that's different from the rest makes it stand out and, in a way, gives it a personality that reminds people of the person it's meant for.
But at the same time, the decision to have something unique might have been the wish of the deceased themselves, as a lot of people tend to be very particular about these details. "So, if you see a unique shade of grey on a gravestone, it could just be that the person buried there liked that color. It's about how the deceased wants others to see them after death," said Hanan, joking that the human need for looking good extends beyond our lives.
I think it’s beautiful that they’re side by side like this. Rest in peace! 🤍🥋
The broken and dead tree was a common marker, often for members of the Woodmen Of The World, a fraternal organization. Still in existence I think. The railroad car and tunnel- were not common.
It's the grave of George S. Bangs who was lobbying for developing Rail Mail Trains it seems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Bangs

Of course she was. All cats are good cats, even the bad ones.
Load More Replies...Getting over a loss like that is not easy. However, rituals like prayers and visiting the grave to talk to that person can help reassure people that the deceased is now someplace better, which often plays a big role in helping them reach the acceptance stage of grieving.
And yet, in many cases, it seems that people find it easier to let go of someone who has passed away than get over a breakup. "It's because once a person dies, there's no hope of getting them back. In contrast, one could always get back with their ex," explained Hanan, summarizing that most people eventually find ways to recover from a loss without too much difficulty.
“The graveyard’s most popular and romantic statue is the one on the Mazzone grave. The effigies depict the two Mazzone siblings dancing together. Mario died while serving as a pilot during World War II, and his sister Maria died just before her wedding. Their mother wanted to represent them finally reunited in the afterlife, Mario wearing his uniform, and Maria wearing her wedding gown.”
In the same cemetery, you'll find Carlo Collodi, author of "The Adventures of Pinocchio."
lol. An old joke; and long one of my favorites- I've threatened doctors with it many times.
Isn't it on Spike Milligan's as well, or is that just a myth
Load More Replies...As the mother of a child with multiple special needs, I have always been so ambivalent about this idea. I love my son with every fiber of my being. There are days when things are so difficult and I wish he didn't have the issues he does. But those very issues are a part of who my son is. To not have them would mean not having him be him. I do believe in an afterlife and have contemplated if the idea of my son being "cured" is worth the change to his identity. I don't know the answer; it's probably different for every person.
I wish everything best and beautiful for your lovely champ. He's perfect the way he is. Lots of love and blessings.. <3

A lamb in a memorial tends to indicate a child, at least where I am from.

So, in the end, there is a lot of uniqueness and beauty, not only in life but also in death. There is a lot we cannot change or predict, and while it may not make us happy, loss is something that all of us have to deal with regardless. But instead of being sad about it, it's better to appreciate what we have while we have it. And when it's gone, take solace in whatever it leaves behind, be it nice memories, captivating stories, or unique gravestones.
What did you think about these pictures? Have you ever seen some headstones that would fit in this list? Tell us all about them in the comments below!
Why? Usually when jokes are on headstones it something the deceased previously said they wanted.

Would be pretty sure someone had found it and put it there on purpose if it was a raven :>
Load More Replies..."The Raven" was my favourote poem of his, and his story of the Murders in the Rue Morgue.
I've been to the burial monument in Baltimore but I didn't know about this one! Gonna have to find it!
What a terrible quote, though! (Poe was a Catholic; that quote sounds like it denies his Heavenly home.) (Yes, I've read that poem several times.)
But, since it was a quote from his work it seems appropriate. Besides, he may have been a Sunday Catholic, but he had plenty of vices the rest of the week. I doubt the quote would displease him. Or God for that matter.
Load More Replies...Thanks to Lakota sharing a news story, I learned that this was a 5 year old named Bryce who was hit by a car, right in front of his house, by a 16 year old driver. It appears that there was a large trailer obstructing the drivers view and the 16 year old wasn't charged, but the poor guilt this kid is dealing with. The story also mentioned that the 5 year old was riding a motorized scooter that goes up to 15 mph and is made for ages 12 and up. So sad for all involved.
I think it is the child's own attempt to write his name. I would guess Bryce.

I've seen this one on my YouTube channels, too. This is a very famous cemetery, where lots of celebrities are buried/interred. Hollywood Forever, I think.
Huh, I'd wonder if the experience made her more susceptible to illness somehow--a lot of the survivors had hypothermia by the time they were rescued--but I looked her up, and it's weirder than that. She was hit by a car--probably; the authorities at the time also looked into the possibility that she was attacked--and died of her injuries. The eerie part is that she died on the second anniversary of the Titanic disaster (with her car accident, assuming that's what it was, happening the previous day). https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/local/2014/04/13/local-history-titanic-survivor-died/10606258007/
Load More Replies...That's interesting as the name "Hocking" was the name of Billy Zane's character in the movie Titanic.
He died so young (heart failure at age 24.) His family asked for donations to be made in his memory to a German Shepherd rescue, in lieu of flowers.

So this one is weird for me. She was born on my birthday (not the same year though), and one of the names mentioned on the stone is also my first name. It's even spelled the same way, the less common way. Oh, AND one of the other names is my grandma's name, and my niece's name (niece was named after gma). That one is spelled differently, but still. What a weird coincidence...
Here is the front side of her grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/88161474/teresa-anne-bolden#view-photo=63447526 She was murdered by someone she hired to help her repair her home.

Load More Replies...I wonder if she had any stated preferences for this- her stage name instead of birth- etc.
If she had, they were surely ignored. She was horribly violated and controlled by the men in her life in life as in death. Look up how Joe DiMaggio (her ex husband) behaved after her death.
Load More Replies...Mr DiMaggio paid for a half-dozen roses to be placed there 3 times a week for 20 years. After their divorce they had become friends again and according to his son he was just on the verge of asking her to get married again when she passed.
What's so unique about out this one though? Just a famous person and it's rather plain.
If you've ever seen Supernatural you know that you need to burn this doll immediately! ;) Seriously though, dolls were often made in the likeness of a child (usually with their own hair) who passed away.

According to OP on Reddit, this is her son's grave. He died aged 6 of a disease/condition that he was born with. No one should have to outlive their kids.
You are correct. No one should outlive their children. I lost my only child when he was 17. Next year will be 20 years since he passed. I can tell you, it does not get easier. Time cannot heal some wounds.
Load More Replies...So sad that the reason there's a family headstone is because the child died and is the only one with birth and death dates. :*(

Died aged 21 of asphyxiation due to vomiting in her sleep after combining alcohol and Oxy. Truly just a tragedy. As someone who has struggled with substance abuse myself, I know how hard it is to stop/fight it.
Does one regain consciousness upon vomiting or did the alcohol and oxy keep her asleep? It sounds horrible either way, just hoping her suffering wasn't too bad

(I have the donor sticker on my license, but just in case.)
