Who doesn't love learning new things? Our brain floods our body with dopamine when we see, to quote the American rock band Semisonic, an F. N. T. That stands for "fascinating new thing". And although the group was singing about a girl, the reference still stands, right? A spiky tiny mushroom or a transparent octopus can be a fascinating new thing too.

The subreddit r/fascinating then is heaven for those who want to satisfy their curiosity and get a dopamine rush. It's a Reddit community with over 40k members where people post interesting pictures and facts. Check out our selection from the subreddit below!

Bored Panda also got some thoughts from an insider. One of the moderators from r/fascinating, WeirdPineapple, was kind enough to answer some questions. Check out our short interview with him below!

The r/fascinating subreddit is not the only community that Weird Pineapple is a mod on. There are 9 communities in total under his wing. r/fascinating is the third on the list in terms of member count.

Nevertheless, it still ranks in the top 5% percent of the largest communities on Reddit. And it's not only facts and pictures we can find there. Community members don't shy away from posting videos with interesting facts as well.

After some research, it seems he repainted it because he wasn't satisfied with the colors and overall mood of this one, as he felt he didn't capture the true beauty and majesty of the night sky. In fact, he didn't even like the famous repainting we all know, because he felt it was too abstract. Reminder that your art and everything you put into this world is probably much more beautiful than you think. 💙

Well, not quite. It's the oldest known living, non-clonal tree. There are a number of things older though. Expessially if you count clonal colonies, which can be in the 10s of thousands, and doubly so if you get into microorganisms that are potentially revivable, with at least one successful revival of a million year old organism and candidates for revival over 100 million years old.

We don't consider it fair. It's really difficult to do anything about when the s****y party that abuses this system keeps getting elected because they abuse this system. You have to take it to court. And, even worse, our Presidential election can result in the winner of the popular losing because the electoral college is a completely outdated system but, again, it's usually the only way one s****y party can win so it'll never change.

The whole process amazes me. This additional filter of electing people who then go and elect the winning party is strange. Where I live, every vote is counted and has direct influence on which of the dozens of parties wins. And the winner does not take it all, if they got less than 51% of all votes.

The men who wrote the Constitution didn't trust the poorly educated swarm of US voters. The Electoral College was designed to keep large groups of stupid people from electing an idiot. But it was changed. Whoever wins a state wins the E College votes for that state. The number of districts in a state dictates the number of EC votes and population dictates districts. It makes sense in a world that didn't have computers.

Yep, the voting count is rigged before you even get started and helps make your vote absolutely useless which was even more obvious when Trump LOST the popular vote, but still got elected and had fun destroying this Country and having the world wondering WTF were we thinking even though it wasn't our fault.

Actually none of them are fair, because it assumes there's only one winner. FPTP voting is more prone to gerrymandering. All but 4 democracies use some form of proportional representation, which this isn't. Ideally there should be more than one representative and the likelihood of getting elected is proportional to the votes you get. With the 'winner take all' system implied here, only one group gets a voice, sometimes even if they're a very small minority group overall.

Ranked voting would help. Many would like to support a third party, but don't want their vote for a long shot to get their worst case scenario elected. If I could vote Green, and know that when/if they came in last my vote could automatically switch to Dem, I'd do it. And then if the election showed that Greens actually are the first choice for... 1/3, or whatever, instead of just the 5% willing to risk it nowadays, policies might shift. Yes, I also believe in fairies.

Democrat and republican leaders are both completely cynical and don’t represent us. But their voters are very different conservatives are good at organizing and progressives aren’t. The solution is for progressives to join the Republican Party and vote in their caucuses. It would moderate the politicians and allow for the return of normal politics.

This isn't unique to the US, and especially not limited to a certain party within. Populations around the world change over time, thus representation changes. Some representative governments do it better, some much worse.

What makes me so sad & angry, is that with this alone, it removes democracy. They “arrange” it so they’ll win. Talk about stealing an election! Then all the stuff they can do to prevent you from voting. How is “voter suppression” and “democracy” to be used in the same sentence? In a democracy, they don’t try to stop people from voting, they do everything they can to help you to do so. And who knew the Founding Fathers were such sports fans? Even if you win the majority popular vote, if you don’t win the Electoral College, you don’t get to be President. If you lose the popular vote but win the Electoral College, you get to be President. It doesn’t matter! The Electoral College determines the Presidency. Who knew? The only thing you need to do to be President is to put enough points on the Electoral College scoreboard. Democracy is when the leader is elected by one person, one vote. Majority wins. You guys need to work on this. Please🙏

For all those US citizens saying, "yeah, it's unfair, but can't do nothing about it." BS For a place that celebrates its existence through revolution. it's kinda pathetic that all you can do is wring your defeatist hands. That's why you can buy any gun you want, but lose everything when you get sick if you're not lucky enough to work somewhere to get insurance: which, if you think about it, is like a type of slavery. But, that's what y'all proudly vote for. Mostly, the ROTW is just sad for you.

This is the reason Republicans fight so hard against restructuring districts. Take a look at Pennsylvania and this is after winning some fights to fix gerrymandering. We usually elect Democrat state leaders like Governors, etc. but our legislature is almost always Republican majority thanks to the very oddly drawn gerrymandered districts. Look up how Karl Rove started a campaign for gerrymandering during George W. Bush's term. https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2016/07/19/gerrymandering-republicans-redmap

We don't consider it fair - but we also didn't vote for Trump, and we don't like that Republicans give massive tax breaks to billionaires and corporations who give them millions to rig the system. Or that congress votes to ensure their retirement/health coverage but votes against veterans care. We don't believe it is fair that Fox gets to call themselves news when all they do is lie. We don't think it is fair that Republicans gave those trillions in tax cuts with false promises of how it would be paid and then demanded that Democrats cut programs for the poor. We don't think anything Republicans do is fair, because it isn't.

The point is that districts are gerrymandered to create more representatives for the ruling party. Districts aren’t “red or blue” they’re “majority red” or “majority blue.” As per the last example you can make every district the majority of one over the other. Thus, giving the electoral collage 3 red and 2 blue, when if left alone and based on actual people would have been 3 blue, 2 red.

We throw the word 'fascinating' around quite a bit here on this post. Oxford Learner's Dictionary describes it as being 'very interested.' But that doesn't really do it justice, does it? When we say that we're fascinated, it's not just that we find it very interesting. There's something stronger – it captivates our attention.
