I hate when people say this because it's not true. My daughter learned cursive in 2nd grade and 3rd. Will she ever use it after that, probably not. I sure don't. But it's still being taught

I learned cursive in school and it is an absolutely useless skill. I do not understand why people place so much importance on it. There are so many more useful things to learn. We could be teaching kids ASL. Or how to do their taxes. Cursive is pointless.

We had handwriting lessons every day in the early 90s. I love my writing, I can safely say it's beautiful as I've had many compliments. I did a report at work and an 18 year old colleague said 'wow you write like someone from the olden days.' 😂

Cursive and handwriting are not the same thing. Cursive is a specific type of handwriting. They are still teaching handwriting, starting in kindergarten.

It is not mandatory these days, though there is a push to bring it back. Education has pushed tech the past 20 years yet they also did away with typing classes. The logic was the kids grew up with computers at home so why should we use class time for typing. The students have used the index finger hunt and peck method durung this time period unless their school made them take a typing class, wgich again, wasn't s state or national graduation requirement for 8th or 12th grade.

But...that's not cursive, it's calligraphy, which also is not taught in U.S schools. Though i would argue that teaching calligraphy would be more productive than cursive, as there's a much better chance that it will end up legible.

Technically, this example isn't cursive, either. But I agree it's a shame cursive isn't really being taught anymore in the US.

Funny though, because so many people keep paper journals, bullet journals, etc.

Cursive is only needed for signatures. I'd rather my kids not have their time wasted for just that.

Yep, my step daughters are 25 and 28 and neither one can write in cursive. When I was kid, many, many years ago, we had classes just on learning cursive.

My son is 26 and he can read and write in script because his 5th grade teacher made the kids write everything in script. My twin daughters are 22 and they can barely read or write in script. It's sad that they don't bother teaching it in schools anymore and if they do it's just like a quick lesson and they move on.

The other day I took my car in to my dealership to have a flat tire replaced and when I was signing out, the young man taking my paperwork told me he didn't know how to write in cursive, except to sign his own name, as a signature is something always needed. He was probably late 20s, early 30s...I told him that was a real shame and he should have been taught how to use it. My daughter taught her 2 children how to write in cursive; I think every child should know how!!

I write by hand often, but in cursive? If I don't consider the moment I showed my kids that I still know it, I didn't use it for 5 years or so? And that was only because I thought that it will look nice on the box I made for cards. Well, it looks nice, but that was the first time I used it since I was 8 or whenever we learned it in school.

My daughter's school said that. Meanwhile they didn't teach a keyboarding class. Sooo...

What is the argument for teaching cursive in schools? Seems like a waste of time that could be used for more useful endeavors.

Art seems to be slowly going that way with the creation of AI - once they work out how to draw hands, of course, lol.

No they stopped teaching cursive because every teacher had a preference and you had kids writing near gibberish by mixing multiple types of handwriting styles
