“Humans Are Metal”: This Online Group Celebrates People That Are Real-Life Heroes (50 Pics)
With all that's been in the news lately, one can easily think that humans are just the Earth's waste. And while that probably applies to some of us, there are plenty of awesome people as well. At least that is what the subreddit r/HumansAreMetal is trying to prove. With over 539,000 members, the community is sharing random acts of kindness and heroism in hopes of restoring our hope in humanity. From honoring firefighters who lost their lives during 9/11 to car crash survivors showing the lifesaving effects of seatbelts, it is doing one heck of a job, too. Continue scrolling and check out some of the most popular posts on the subreddit.

Stuttero said that a lot of the long-time members of the sub are also big fans of our sister communities, r/natureismetal and r/natureisbrutal, "which both showcase similar content to r/HumansAreMetal, albeit with animals/wildlife instead of humans, and slightly more graphic content in the case of the latter - most of the team definitely do believe that the more gory content is viewed really well by the community."
The moderator highlighted that shared interests really are key to building a good, strong Reddit community. "It's been clear to us for as long as we've been here that the people make the community what it is—it's for this reason that we really try to give people a fair amount of latitude to post what interests them and the wider community—one thing for sure is that we wouldn't be where we are today without them."

What a brave, selfless, and empathetic woman. The practice of child marriage is horrifying, antiquated, and plain vile-- it needs to end.
As for the people in the pictures, they couldn't have done all these wonderful things if it wasn't for their ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of others. Empathy is crucial for behaving compassionately—it allows us to experience another person's point of view, rather than just our own, and enables us to do good not because we have to but because we want to. Because we know it's what has to be done.
We, humans, begin to show signs of empathy in infancy and the trait develops steadily through childhood and adolescence. Yes, most of us are likely to feel greater empathy for people like ourselves and may feel less empathy for those outside our family, community, or race but it also allows us to bridge these gaps.
First responders, humanitarian aid workers, doctors, therapists, journalists, and others whose work involves opening themselves up to people's pain tend to be especially empathic. However, they need to watch out because all the heartbreak of those they help or whose stories they record can accumulate and when this "emotional residue" gets big enough, they may shut down, burn out, and become less willing or able to give of themselves.

I work in education. My college has a large number of Gurkha's who study english for free due to their service in the british army. They really are an incredible community, they have a tangible effect on the atmosphere in college. They bring tranquility to the campus, and a little splash of colour as well.

@AntiAntiVaxx- My father was a Marine (Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Korean War). He was gifted a knife by a Gurkha that he fought alongside in Korea and it was the only souvenir he owned from his entire career. He said of the Gurkhas, "I was just glad they were on our side."

In the Indian Army they are known by their original name of Gorkhas. I live where we once had a Gurkha regiment based. Extremely humble, proud, tough, honourable, polite and respected. My grandfather fought beside them during the war and had the uttermost respect for them.

A professor at my university, years ago, had been a Ranger when he was in the military. He told me that the toughest and bravest soldiers he ever met were Gurkhas. That was a universal opinion, evidently, among the Rangers.

I read a story a while back about a British officer in WWII looking for Gurkha volunteers to jump behind German lines out of airplanes at 2,000 feet. He was disappointed that "only half" of the Gurkhas volunteered for the mission. Once he explained they would have parachutes, they all raised their hands.

I very, very proudly alter vests and attach patches for the BACA chapter in my area. My neighbor is a recruiter and asked me to do his because I sew, it was really difficult to learn to worth with leather, but members now donate to a law center in the capital of our state for each patch I do. That center VRLC, helped me defend myself (pro bono) for my Title IX in college. When you're alone in those positions, EVERYTHING matters more than you could imagine.

My mom remembers them finding a child abuser/pedophile in their car on the way to the case with another kid in the back. She says she watched this entire gang pull out a frightened child and beat up the bad man, so this guy ended up with two sentences instead of just this one. She had no idea the dude was bad at the time and was scared as a kid cause to her they just took a kid out of the car and beat up her dad. But she says they're really cool and she knew some of them.

A former governor of my state once said, "All of the bad people bringing drugs, stealing, raping, and murdering our girls are BLACK MEN and we need to lock them up." He had no proof, was found to be lying and in fact all of the ACTUAL crimes were perpetrated by WHITES. (fyi, we have a LOT of domestic violence death in my state) He was running for reelection and LOST. He also claimed that the dangerous chemicals in plastics were "Not a big deal and all they do is give women little beards." WTF?? EDIT: stupid typos

She is very brave. Respect. But that doesn't mean that women who do not fight are not brave. Most women calculate that if they do nothing they will probably live to tell. Rapists prey on this situation. Sometimes the rapist just is too strong, too big, too convincing. I have known cases where there was no violence at all, just a man so powerful that the woman became frightened for her life and let him do. This is not cowardly, just survival.

Amazing how he managed to keep his cool and not panic at the tender age of five. He also had great presence of mind and immediately understood what needed to be done, then did all of it. Plenty of adults wouldn’t make that connection and just dissolve into panic and fear. As to commenters dissing the parents, we don’t have all the facts. While it is possible the parents were neglectful and left the kids alone in the house, or were drunk or wasted and slow to respond, the article doesn’t mention any of that, plus there are other plausible explanations too. Maybe the parents weren’t awake, or weren’t aware the kids’ room was in peril, or maybe he was faster than they were and got everything done before they got there. Until we know more we shouldn’t pass judgement.

A little hero! My grandpa got some kind of honorary award from the fire department once when he went into a burning house to save an elderly neighbor lady...both ended up being okay. My mom would tell me this story and ask me if I've ever touched a real hero before and I would say no, so I would touch my Grandpa's arm and go..wowww!!!

It all depends. Some people especially during certain decades and from certain countries are allowed to donate after transfusions. Most countries won’t allow people to donate if they lived in the UK during a certain time or if they had the transfusion during that time due to the risk of mad cows.

He had heard of his patients' ulcers being cured when they received antibiotics and extrapolated from that. He tried and failed to get the medical & scientific establishments to listen and they refused, mostly because he was just a GP and they were the 'experts.'

I knew a doctor who worked with her a few years back. She was a total badass then too. Being a female in a backward ass country like Iran was bad enough, but she stood up to the wankers all through her medical training and fought them AND WON to get money for various treatments for women that many male doctors thought beneath them. Hear! HEAR!!! I was listening to an interview yesterday (1/25/21 - yeah.. just got this thread) and the gentleman Doctor was talking about his life's work. CLOSING THE GAP WITH VACCINATIONS!! This man at 76 is still working to help continue to mandate vaccinations for schools in the US. And also - rework the vaccination schedule for babies to lesson the fear for parents. He also worked in India. India has had a law in place since the late 1800's that they can enact at will to force its citizens to be vaccinated. This Doctor was there when they had to reenact it when India's children were dying and/or being stunted by such diseases as TT, DPT, and Polio. It is possible it will be done again once the world has an ACTUAL COVID VACCINE THAT IS PROVEN TO WORK.

I'm conflicted over this one. I'm not in favor of people taking justice in their own hands. But when the system fails you... what would you do? Especially in cases as gruesome as this one... Was he right to shoot this man down? Maybe he could have recorded the conversation... I don't know. His little girl didn't have her father from 6 to 19... That's quite a heavy consequence even if he did was felt right. But it was also a radical way to prevent this man from abusing more children.

Recording the conversation wouldn't have helped. Inadmissible in court since he didn't consent to being recorded and it took place in his own home. I get what you're saying, but the recording would have done no one any good. Personally I would have suggested beating the s**t out of him until he was only half dead since that's a lesser prison term, but his size would have made that difficult. That being said, this isn't taking justice into their own hands. This is taking revenge because there is no justice. The guy doesn't seem to have any illusions about that.

I'm in no way condoning this, but 13 years? If the child had shot the man, it would be self-defense with most likely very minimal consequences, right? So how did a man protecting his child, who was taunted by the scum, rate such a long sentencing, especially since the police found evidence that it wasn't an isolated incident and indicated that he never would have stopped? Even if he showed little remorse, how could a jury not see that this wasn't the action of a man who would make a habit of killing people if he had been free to go about his life?

A jury is made up of random citizens. Even just the opinions here vary greatly. Some states have a minimum sentence, some people believe you just can't kill someone outright and not go to jail. That's how, I think.

That's what privilege does to people. They don't have the experience to see children die from a disease. This reminds me of one doctor who became a writer, Bulgakov, he has short stories of his experience in a town as the only physician. Just starting out and a child comes in with diphtheria. The child is choking and hypoxic. he needs to open the airway. And it's a dramatic short story of an inexperienced doctor saving a life. Everytime I read about antivaxx I remember him and remember how he described the tears of the mother and how she begged for him to save her child. I despise antivaxxers.

My grandma, may she rest in peace, often volunteered at the hospital when they were understaffed, many years after she had retired (she was a doctor, a specialist in oncology - the field dealing with cancer). I often think that if she had still been with us today, she would have volunteered again to assist with COVID patients, even though old people are most vulnerable to the virus.

Cracks me up - a couple of years ago, I was working in a gas station that got a lot of international visitors because we're near Death Valley. One day, a group of young Russians were browsing and talking to each other in Russian. An older dude walks in wearing a MAGA hat. He hears them talking and assumes they're German or Israeli. When they say they're Russian, he starts going "Oh Russia...that Vladimir Purina, he's quite the guy huh? Isn't he great?" He's just going on about how great Putin is. If there is one thing I can say it's please remember to ask high-functioning people if they want support as well! (ask, don't assume) One of my biggest struggles is people often think high functioning means "autism Light"- in that none of your symptoms are pervasive or severe, which is not always true for all. Sometimes it just means you fit enough requirements to "pass" as normal, whatever that is. I have great people skills, business skills, etc.- but I will STILL cry like a little baby if a stranger taps my shoulder. I kid you not.

On the other, people attribute your talents to your autism, which may, or may not, be true, and to varying degrees... or they support you out of pity. Eh, most cases on House are rather well known conditions. While they are often rare, most doctors would know them because those "intersting" conditions are often lectured about at medical schools. The problem with the show is that their diagnostic methods are completely off the rails. The patients often have diseases that would show up in routine diagnostics, but House never does routine diagnostics. If there's a cheap and simple test for a condition, you can be sure that they won't do it.

I have. I've seen worse. I live in Oklahoma and several years ago we had softball size hail. I kid you not. One guy, a jogger I believe, was caught out in this particular storm. He looked much worse. I'm so thankful this lady wasn't hurt worse and that she saved her child's life. She's a bad a** mom for sure!!!!!!

As soon as Ms Simpson pulled her car over because of the heavy rain, she heard a loud bang and realised the back windows of her car, where her young child was sitting, had been destroyed by the hail. “I looked down and I could see she was screaming but I couldn’t even hear her, that’s how loud it was. I covered my infant with my body to stop her from getting badly injured. My entire back, arms and head are badly bruised. I’m just so relieved that my daughter and grandmother are alright.” What a wonderful and brave woman.

Okay this one is actually a bit misleading. Yes the Irwin’s own and operate Australia zoo, they did not single handedly save 90,000 animals. A large team of volunteers, veterinarians, zookeepers and other staff all helped out.

This isn't an issue of defining death though, this is an issue of misdiagnosis. He very clearly was not brain dead so the doctors either failed to test him properly or just made an assumption. It is also possible that there was an error in the tests, but in that case the docs should have redone it at the father's request. Regardless, unless this gentleman had a living will stating no extreme measures the doctors had no right to take him off life support without his family's approval.

It's simple and yet a sad truth. History is written by the victors. Most will leave detail out that don't suit their narrative. Since most of the US was heavily racist and segregated back then they saw this man as lesser than and left it out. Just like US history books never mention how Canada played a special part in the World Wars, earning the reputation that other troops could not, some in mere hours- thus earning the nickname Crazy Canucks. It has sadly become subjects that are now considered interests and not mandatory in the education system.

Well, even on strike firemen work normally (and unpaid) as nurses and doctors do, so the French government doesn't care and this can go on for a very long time. That's why they need to show their protest in such a spectacular way... Something you would'nt expect to happen in a rich and democratic country as France, renowned for the quality of its public service. But the ghost of Mrs Thatcher seems to be haunting the mind of our current politcians. I don't remember the outcome of the firemen's strike exactly but I can tell you that hospital staff were on strike for more than one year to protest the organised decay of public health. They didn't get anything and were even beaten by the police. That was just 2 months before the government started to call them heroes due to that pandemic the country was completely unprepared to deal with.

When I was a teenager, I was at a dance club with a friend and my boyfriend. He chose this night to break up with me. Sobbing, my girlfriend said "Let's go to the ladies room, get you cleaned up and go find you a real man." As we walked past the entrance towards the restrooms...a skinny older man (who was totally out of place in a teen dance club) was walking next to us when we hear "clunk." We looked down to see a gun on the floor. He quickly snatched it up and ran for the men's room. We bolted to the ladies restroom, then got brave enough to find a bouncer and tell them what we saw. The guy was detained without a gun. When we told them he went to the restroom first, a search found the gun in the bottom of the trash bin. He had planned to rob the place. I'm just glad we were there to see him with it..otherwise no one would have known.

How about Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov (Russian: Станисла́в Евгра́фович Петро́в) was a lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who played a key role in the 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident. On 26 September 1983, three weeks after the Soviet military had shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, Petrov was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile had been launched from the United States, followed by up to five more. Petrov judged the reports to be a false alarm, and his decision to disobey orders, against Soviet military protocol, is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in a large-scale nuclear war. An investigation later confirmed that the Soviet satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned. Without him, it's likely NONE OF US would be here to read about him.

These are some truly incredible, inspiring and extremely strong people. Well done to them and their amazing efforts/achievements. One that is was surprised that didn’t get a mention was Desmond Doss. He was a combat medic who refused to kill anyone or carry a weapon due to his beliefs. The military tried to force him to quit and when that didn’t work they tried to court martial him for refusing a direct order to hold a gun but his religious freedoms saved him from dishonourable discharge and he was allowed on the front lines. During an ambush by the Japanese soldiers on top of Hacksaw Ridge ALL the US soldiers (that were able) started retreating back down the cliff, except one. Desmond Dodd went searching for anyone still alive and sending them down the cliff to safety. He saved 75 people that day, when the US soldiers stormed Hacksaw ridge slowly taking over Okinawa, Desmond Dodd’s was wounded severely from a Japanese grenade and as he was trying to get to safety he was shot by a sniper. Even when he was severely injured he told the ‘litter-bearers’ to take another man to safety first before rescuing him. He literally would choose to die just so another can live. He died at the age of 87 after his ONLY lung failed as he had one of his lungs (and 5 ribs) were removed approx 50 years prior after suffering tuberculosis.
