Believe it or not, but the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world counts its existence for 11,000 years as of today. The town, Damascus, is the Syrian capital city, and astonishingly enough, not much has changed behind this ancient city's walls. However, not many towns keep the same faces for such a long time, often changing and evolving. Sometimes the city development makes it even more beautiful, but as it is in a more often case, the alluring greenery and historical houses have to make way for skyscrapers in the ever-changing city skyline.

The world has increased over the last 100 years that it's difficult to imagine just how much things have changed during that time. Many of the world's most famous cities and country capitals - like Kuala Lumpur for example, or Hong Kong - bare little resemblance to their earlier selves, and cities such as Dubai didn't even exist at all until relatively recently.

Take a look at these before and after pictures of beautiful cities to see what we mean. Compiled by Bored Panda, they're sure to give you a fresh perspective on how you look at the world's biggest cities and settlements.

Looks a bit like the old Blade Runner sets if climate change had gone the other way (i.e., if it had gone the way it is going). Far too ugly and densely packed and parched. It's just a huge show off, I know. The population is actually quite small, fine. But with all the money something a little less hard on the eye could..should have been possible, surely? I admit the location is against you but work with it not against it. It looks a bit like Hong Kong without the scenery or Las Vegas without the sin. Or the family-friendly Fun places. It looks mostly just very boring and HOT. Not in a sexy way either...

1900 was quite a long time ago, so this example is not that surprising. Better show the world how the famous Gangnam district looked in the 1960's. The second half of the 20th century was a drastic speed-up of Korean modernisation and economy.

It doesn't look bad but if the 1900 pic had been in colour I can't help but finding it the better. The green spaces are spot but the whole "Manhattan-on-the-Vilnia"(if it's the Neris I do beg your pardon but the point is still valid I think) vibe is slightly off-putting

Considered the largest and single most devastating bobing attack in history. Check out this Youtube for a bit o schooling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdAvWfVD5Fk

No, it's Tokyo. Pretty much all of Japan was wiped out by 1945, the firebombing raids on Tokyo that March were actually more devastating than Hiroshima. It's just the city wasn't obliterated in a nanosecond, and there weren't all those pesky radiation after-effects.

I moved there in 2006. This is 2005 in the Mall of the Emirates/Jumeirah area. That is exactly what it looked like in that part of town. The part of SZR closer to the first roundabout had some mini skyscrapers then, but that's off to the right in the picture, and way more developed now. Night and day difference.

Yes, you covered up the sand in ghastly skyscrapers and way too much paved roads than needed and lit it all up like you had money to burn (oh wait.. you do) and it still ends up as the ugliest city here though to be fair your neighbouring emirate's and national capital is close.

A lot, actually. Ecosystem changes made fishes be closer to the shore, which attracks sharks that used to feed themselfs of it in the open sea. As a results, sharks are seen often, and the number of shark attacks is far greater then they used to be in that region.

Doesn't seem to have changed quite as much as the others which is excellent. Improvements can be seen only much closer to the ground and the city looks more Levantine than I remembered but quite beautiful then AND now. Which kind of goes against the whole point of this entertaining exercise, surely?

Try to be accurate, this is basic geography. There is no "the" before "Great Britain", it's either "Great Britain" or "The United Kingdom", depending on which parts you are including in the reference.

That is probably the only part of the entire city that has been somehow protected. Attached is how they ruined Istanbul in the past years. Unplanned urbanization even got wilder and faster after 2009. One of the most beautiful cities in the world just became a mass, thanks to Erdogan's government. What a shame. istanbul_4...164c43.jpg istanbul_453947-57805c7164c43.jpg

The 1940s photo of Los Angeles appears to be a view of the Fairfax district with the Park La Brea residential complex (built in 1944) highlighted in the center. And the "Now" photo is of downtown Los Angeles, several miles away, with several of the more recent buildings missing. The Now photo is at least 5 years old.

The transformation of cities over the last century is a testament to human innovation and progress. As we witness these urban landscapes evolve, it's reminiscent of how humanity has progressed in leaps and bounds, especially when considering the contrast between early innovations and modern achievements. Just as cities like Dubai emerged from the desert, the comparison of historical achievements, such as the Wright brothers' initial flight leading to Apollo moon missions, speaks to the impact of change over time.

For deeper insights into these shifts in human achievement, exploring how life transformed within a single century can be illuminating.
