“The Worst Design Layout”: Realtor Shares Tour Of “Absurd” NYC Studio Apartment Listed For $3,500

“The Worst Design Layout”: Realtor Shares Tour Of “Absurd” NYC Studio Apartment Listed For $3,500

When looking for an apartment, one typically focuses on whether the residence is bright, has a pleasant view, and is conveniently located. Those who enjoy cooking or baking will also prioritize a spacious kitchen…but all will want to ensure this area doesn’t randomly have a shower a few meters away from the fridge.

In a video posted on Instagram, realtor David Okocha shared footage of an apartment in Nolita, New York City, which he described as “the worst design layout” he has ever seen.

Highlights
  • Realtor David Okocha shared a bizarre NYC apartment with a shower next to the kitchen.
  • Listed at $3,495/month, the apartment's unusual layout sparked widespread criticism.
  • Social media users reacted to the odd apartment, with some comparing the residence to a Sims house.

“What I’m about to show you is so absurd. It might leave some of you speechless,” Okocha warns viewers at the beginning of the clip.

As people walk through the door of the small studio apartment, they encounter a seemingly unfinished shower next to a tiny kitchen space.

The shower is enclosed by glass brick and has no curtains or door. Furthermore, one of its walls is half made up of dirty and unfinished tiles, as shown in the video.

The design layout is so unconventional that if you’re feeling hungry after a shower, you could take a few steps and grab a snack from the kitchen pantry. Also, if you’re having guests over, they can unexpectedly catch you in your bathrobe, greeting them as they step into your home.

But it doesn’t end there, as the shower is next to a small room that only has a toilet, “no mirror, no sink, no lights,” says Okocha in the video, which received over 52,000 comments. “Just your toilet and a window.”

The rental unit on Elizabeth Street is listed for $3,495 monthly.

“You cannot beat this block! Conveniently located [next] to the best shopping and restaurants New York City has to offer,” the StreetEasy description of the “charming studio” reads.

The site’s listing history shows this apartment was last rented in 2020 for about $2,100 per month.

After showcasing the peculiar kitchroom, Okocha’s video heads into the studio space, which seems to have enough room for a bed and, in the rear, a closet space for storage.

“This is definitely one of the weirdest ones I’ve seen,” the realtor admitted to the New York Post.

“Everything was just a very tight squeeze. I can imagine, especially if you have guests over, it’s not going to work out if you have to squish everyone in the main studio space.”

He also shared his reaction to setting eyes on the infamous shower.

“When I first saw it, I thought I was in the wrong apartment and it was being remodeled. I thought there’s no way they’re going to market this apartment,” he said.

People online shared their thoughts about the bizarre residence, writing, “That price doesn’t leave much leftover for therapy because of the depression you’ll get for living here.”

“Is nobody going to discuss the amount of mold in that grimey a** shower,” another person said.

A separate individual argued, “This should be illegal. Seriously, it needs to be remodeled.”

“This looks like a Sims house,” another social media user said, referencing the social simulation video game that allows players to create and control virtual people and design their homes.

Finally, someone stressed, “$3495 for a tiny warehouse is crazy.”

“Jail for everyone involved,” someone demanded

I've lived in a studio before and that layout isn't terrible, but it also isn't great. I'm more appalled by the state of the shower and the floor around it. GROSS.

Is it missing tiles or is that grime? For that price, it really should be better maintained, whatever it is.

Is living in NY really that great? Obviously this is a bad "apartment," but any rent there is outrageous. Even with buying in 2023 my mortgage is right at $1500 per month for 1600 sq. feet plus a huge garage on almost an acre. And it's not like we live in the middle of nowhere. 40 minutes from the beach, 10 minutes from multiple grocery stores, restaurants, shopping, etc. What is it about NY that makes people stay?
