Does anyone else have any funny and irrational fears?

Example: I'm afraid of cans of biscuit dough. I'm afraid that one day my quest for buttery goodness will have me losing at a game of biscuit roulette. I will be opening a can, which will explode, and I'm left looking at the stumps where my hands used to be.

#1

That everyone everywhere can read my mind. It's actually really annoying.

Have you considered that maybe you're reading theirs? ESP isn't really looked into as a credible science. You won't find many papers devoted to it in The Lancet yet humans possess a biological function to sense 'atmospheres you can cut with a knife' or laidback and chilled vibes. We don't explore it because we also have logic and reason, and aren't encouraged to, but there are so many things our biologies can do. Chances are people aren't reading your mind - thank God because we all need at least one space that is utterly us and private - but you may have an ability to tune into other people's thoughts. Chances are that's not a comforting thought but exploring it may help to reduce your fear.

I use to feel like someone or something was aways watching me. I know it sounds crazy. Sometimes after watching a scary movie, sometimes the feeling comes back and sometimes if I watch true crime at night it get bad sometimes. Like I can't sleep and feel like if I look out the window I will see a face. I know it's crazy. 🥺🤯 And sometimes I hate it. ......

Spiders. Where I live, the United Kingdom of UK, there are no spiders that can physically hurt me, so why am I so freaked out? Arachnophobia makes sense if you live in Australia, when every little creature is poisonous, but where I am? Nope. Ridiculous. I do remember a theory that spiders were extra-terrestrial in origin and that is why so many people are afraid of them, spiders not literally being otherworldly. And it makes sense to me. Yes, I know it is not a serious theory.....

For me it's only small spiders I really don't like. Tarantula? Cute and fluffy. Daddy long leg? I rescue it out of the bathtub. Small cardinal spider? Destroy at all cost. My reasoning: if I can keep an eye on it, it's safe. If they can vanish in a blink of an eye, not happening 🤷‍♀️

I have never been bitten by one that is considered dangerous. But every single one of them carries a toxin used to subdue and dissolve their prey. So yes, the "harmless" ones have sent me to the emergency room more than once. There is no such thing as a harmless s****r

It's not strictly true that 'there are no spiders that can physically hurt' in the UK, there are more than a few, they are just less likely to kill you. I don't like the idea of justifying your fear so maybe don't look up the rabbit hutch spider, cupboard spider, noble false widow, Walnut orb-weaver, wasp spider (admittedly rare in the UK, but still present), or probably one of the worse The black lace-weaver.

I grew up in New England house built before the Civil War so it's foundation was stone. Because of this spiders would come right in from under the floorboards HUGE WOOD SPIDERS! I had them crawl on my at times, and even crawl onto my bed when I was trying to sleep. When I was married I told my husband YOU have to deal with the spiders. He thought I meant little spiders, but while at my parents I saw one and screamed. He came to kill it, but then he saw it! "That thing is bigger than my foot! I know, I said, why do you think I'm afraid of it??? I HATE ALL ARACHNIDS TO THIS VERY DAY!

I'm always anxious when I look at people with long fingernails doing any precise tasks, especially the ones requiring pressing or prying. I can't help but expect that their fingernails will snap or rip off leaving bare, bloody meat on the fingers. For the very same reason I can't grow my own nails too much.

UPDATE: I just got back and it honestly went rather well. I was TERRIFIED when I first entered the water. I kept panicking thinking of the worst case scenario. So I stopped to take a break quite often. But, I completed the second 25m round with no breaks but since it has been 5 years since I last swam like this, I didn't have much stamina. The results aren't revealed yet though so I guess I'm gonna have to wait. Also, I forgot how to dive since it's been so long. I did a full on belly flop. Now I know what people mean when they say it burns.😂

I'm afraid of escalators and by extension moving sidewalks or amusement ride/ tubing conveyer belts. Now... the story to explain it. When I was a kid, my shoelace got stuck in an escalator. My shoe got really tight and it was freaking me out. I tried to tell my mum but it was loud and busy so though she could feel me moving she couldn't hear or see what the problem was. Out of nowhere, a guy going the other way could see it, he jumped over the barrier, grabbed me, snapping the shoelace and ran me off the escalator. My mum thought I was being kidnapped and freaked. When he explained what had happened, she was grateful as I could have been seriously injured. I was 3. To this day (26) I still avoid escalators and if I must take them I have to psych myself up to get on or off. I don't dare walk on them and I grip really hard on the handrail the whole time. I also will say that they are less irrational than being afraid of sharks as more people die in freak escalator accidents than in shark attacks (thank you shark week for that random fact)

I have the same fear. As a child I would freeze up and refuse to step on the escalator. I would imagine disasterous scenarios like your shoelace incident. I still fear using them, especially going down. I hold on like a vice. Now, walking conveyers are awesome, but I do get a bit tense stepping off.

When I was 3 or 4 I went to Barnes and Noble with my mom and it was so big it had an escalator and for some reason I was thinking about what would happen if I stood at the top until my mom was nearly out the door-and it happened. I also have that fear, and my foot got stuck in the escalator in Macy's NYC. When I was 4 the escalators above the 4th floor were old and made of wooden slats. My foot was small enough to fit in between the slats and got stuck! My Mom noticed seconds before the top of the escalator where my foot would have been broken off by the mechanism! Still afraid [67] and I take the Elevator or Stairs!

I have the fear of looking up. There is a name for it but I forgot what it was. It only applies if I am seeing nothing but sky. It makes me feel like I am going to suddenly fall to my death, even if I am standing on the ground. Not terrified to do it but it makes extremely uncomfortable. It's a weird one.

Not at all weird. Views that have no frame of reference are disturbing. I was once on a Navy ship and we were so far out we could not see land. But looking across the deck at the ocean I could see the curve of the earth. Endless sky and water holding on because of gravity. Terrifying.

I got locked in the room with a corpse when I was like 6 I think. I was in there well over an hour before they found me. I was at a funeral with my mom. My mom's best friends father died, it was her best friends daughter who accidentally locked me in the room with the body. The funeral was at a funeral home and it was a room set aside for one or two people to go in and visit a passed loved one so the room wasn't big and yes he was in a casket. I'm okay aside from the fact that corpses weird me out now which makes funerals more difficult. At the time I wasn't but surprisingly not even in the top 10 worst things that have ever happened to me. Defiantly number 2 on the list of weird things that have happened to me though. Number 1 we don't talk about.

No idea what caused it but I have an irrational fear of something coming out of the power sockets at night and zapping me. If I get up in the night it is very hard not to run to the bathroom and then run back to bed and jump into bed to avoid touching the floor. I also struggle to have my feet on the floor if there is a thunderstorm, not sure what will get me there. And clowns, those dudes are terrifying despite never having seen such classics like IT.

I have a fear that what I see/experience as reality is just my mind playing tricks on me and that some day my mind will suddenly show me the "real" reality -but at a time where I can't avoid being badly hurt or even "unalived" ( as I think BP prefers to call it). Example: I think I am out for a walk in the sunshine in a park.... but in reality I am out on the ocean about to drown. Example: I think I am sitting on a bus listening to music.... but in reality I am falling down from a cliff. It's weird but I've always had this fear.

Well I live in the country so sometimes you just accidentally stir up a ground wasp’s next when mowing or gardening. Haven’t been stung in a few years but they got me right on the forehead a month ago. I have a system to mitigate damage and I take an allergy pill and an anti-inflammatory, along with putting on some kind of topical analgesic. Still swells up real good and painful. Felt it all the way down to my jaw for a few hours. Bump was there for a week, but I’m still not scared of them.

I am afraid of any nuclear disaster. I am so terrified that I know exactly how to survive. Whenever I go to a new space I plan how I would know, and how I would survive. For example, on my first day of middle school I identified how I would be able to tell (aka I identified all the windows so I could see the flash), where I would go (the gym), and how to help others. I even have a plan for if people don’t make it in in time, they would be radioactive so they couldn’t come into the gym with the non contaminated people, so they would have to go to the multi purpose room Sry it’s a bit long

That people and inanimate objects can read my mind. I can't touch people, touch the same object as them, or stand on the same floor tile as them if I'm having bad/intrusive thoughts. If I'm touching something like a door handle or a button or the sink knob I have to hold on to it until I finish the thought so it has context.

Eels... Something about those... dreadful faces... I can't stand them. As for a story of how bad this "fear" is {first, I'm 7'4 and I was 33 years old at the time of this story.} I went to the zoo with my baby brother for his birthday and headed over to the Fish Tank area. There was a walk-through glass tunnel with... You guessed it... EELS... Just swimming and poking out all over. My brother had to clutch my hand and let me bury my head into his shirt/Jacket so I wouldn't see them while going through the tunnel, Because every time I tried valiantly to "man up" and get close... I started crying and having a panic attack.

She had D.I.D and had her personalities shift while we were on a bridge over a river and suddenly my mom was dealing with a 7 year-old freaking out trapped in a 30 year-old's body. She had to wrestle her out of the drivers seat and into the passenger seat. So yeah - I developed a fear of bridges after that. I was actually 7 at the time. I feel you.

I have irrational fears They’re not funny though. Most of them are connected to my mom because she wrecked me. She reflected so many bad concepts onto me, like one time when I was 11 she was complaining about her weight. My stomach looked bigger. I was scared that I’d blow up like a balloon. One time, I was 12 and she noticed we had the same pant size, except her waist was 1 size bigger. I didn’t have hips yet, I started falling into a bad place. Eighteen days ago, I was nearly kicked out because my mom is transphobic but since that’s politically incorrect, she tried gaslighting me into believing that someone must have hurt my feelings for me to think about such “adult matters” She was the only one who ever hurt me. Ever. Because she wanted me to be what I wasn’t. She wanted me to be her perfect daughter.

Wormy things with legs - grub worms in particular. I don't know why, and I know they don't bite, but I don't want to touch them. This also includes millipedes and centipedes, but mostly because of how creepy they look. And millipedes smell terrible if you squish them.

I used to have a fear that someone would strap rockets to my bedroom and make my room take off into space so I would fly up and freeze to death. Yeah, kinda strange. It was because when I was a child, I went to a space museum, and they had this thing where you have to dress up the astronaut in appropriate clothes for space. Me, being like 5, dressed him up in random stuff like shorts. The sound of the astronaut freezing to death and me watching it happen was freaky to me. Yeah, that was weird.

Butterflies. Yes, butterflies. My family thinks it’s hilarious. I don’t know, it’s just something about their creepy legs and the fact that they fly way too close to me for comfort. I used to like them, we’d go to a butterfly garden occasionally and I’d always try to catch them, but we went recently and I was nervous the entire time, especially when a butterfly came flying in my direction.

I am so scared of mirrors for literally no good reason. Like idk, they just freak me out like I can’t look in a mirror or anything. Apparently there’s a psychological thing where if you look at yourself through a mirror in a dimly lit room after you stare at your face for a while you will start hallucinating. Even the smartest people do it. You can’t control it. Idk, someone test it out for me, I can’t do it. 🪞🫣

I’m afraid of shower heads, and I have been for my entire life. Luckily I’ve gone from screaming and crying when just thinking about them, to just having an intense feeling of dread. I do take showers, don’t worry, but I can’t look at the shower head while doing it, I have to be quick (I probably don’t shower for more than four minutes at a time but I do make sure I’m clean), I can only shower at night, and I have to have music on. I’m also afraid of change. I’ve been worried before that if I leave a room, and then come back, the furniture might be rearranged or the walls might be a different color, or that one day I’ll wake up and something will be slightly different. This fear is very mild but I thought I might include it. Terrified of heights. Scared of what might happen once I die, especially since I’m not religious. Mildly afraid of texting. I have to check several times to make sure I sent my text to the right person. I’m worried that my reply isn’t what they want to hear, or that my tone might not be read correctly, or that the contact or phone number I have saved isn’t actually the person I’m trying to reach, even though it always is. I prefer talking in person, but that’s not always feasible. I’m afraid of all insects, specifically a certain kind of caterpillar. I can never remember what they’re called, but they’re a kind of moth, they’re fuzzy and yellow, have two black antenna on the front and one on the back. I can’t even look at pictures of them. When I was younger, we went camping, and all the frogs were gone. Usually there were so many frogs that you couldn’t go anywhere without stepping on one, and they screamed like dying kids at night, which is probably why I’m also uneasy around frogs now. But instead of the usual frogs, there were now these f*****g caterpillars, and they were everywhere. They were on the tent, in the tent, on my clothes, in our food, just everywhere. And their heads would fall off and gather and in clouds at your feet…not to mention they had acid on their feet. And no one else was scared of them. It’s been years and I’m still absolutely horrified by them. They went away after a few years (thankfully, because they were also killing the trees with the acid in their feet), but then the frogs came back. I feel like I have a good sense of humor about all this, but oh my god do these fears suck. Sorry for the long post, feel free to ask anything.

I’m from frightened of toothbrushes. It’s the sound they make that I simply can’t bear and turns me into a whimpering ball of fear. I am afraid of fish too!!!! The smaller the scarier! When I Was a kid we had goldfish in my bedroom. The tank was too small and I Didn't know, I had a few fish in it, but I guess they were cramped and jumped out. Some were saved....some were not and I found them dead and dried out a few days later when we came home from visiting for the weekend. One morning I woke up and one fish was halfway across the floor on it's way to my bed!!! (He died) I figured out the tank sizes so they were happier (they ended up getting a whole pond to swim in all summer), and got a top for the tank, But to this day I CANT go in a pet store where there are tanks of fish. And if someone is taking fish out of a tank (At a pet store or at home to change the water etc.) I can't be in the room....or the building, I'm afraid they might jump out and need me to rescue them but I'll be too scared to save them and they will die cause of me. :(

I wouldn't say this is necessarily entirely irrational, but it's certainly an odd one. I've (F13) recently started my freshman year of high school, and I've had my hair cut extremely short since fifth grade. It's just easier on the whole. However, that combined with the fact that I tend to prefer sweatpants and hoodies to even t-shirts and shorts (or the fact that I hate almost everything to do with the color pink) means that I have MANY anecdotes about being mistaken for a guy. So here's one of my top three fears: That one day, some girl will think I'm a guy and try to ask me out or ask for my number. I can't even imagine the embarrassment that would happen in that scenario.

As a child, I found them disturbing and the result was a recurring nightmare where murderous crash test dummies took over the world and the last thing I would see is a child dummy trying to strangle and eat me after it killed my family. It always stuck with me and even now, at 36 years old, I cringe and squirm at the sight of a crash test dummy. I really hate them.

Octopodes!! (plural of octopus) I get so nervous whenever I'm near them, when I go to the aquarium (quite often; i love the ocean) i cant go into the octopus section without freaking out. I think this fear was caused when i was 5, i went to the aquarium and i remember seeing a video of a kraken destroying a bridge. I GOT SO SCARED! Later that night, i had a nightmare me & my family and friends were on a bridge and each getting individually 'unalived' by an octopus. And also I think theyre gonna pop out of nowhere and drag me down with their tentacles and sucker things. Eeekkk and also they're way too smart, and they look like aliens-

I should add that I think they're amazing, I just can't really stand them.

Mirrors or blank screens (as in tv screens or computer monitors), particularly in dark rooms. Some part of me always expects something to crawl out of them.

Cut fruit! The sight of it makes me sick. I don’t know if it’s trust issues or what, but I just can’t! Also mandarin peel. Cannot touch it at all.

I'm afraid of getting old, getting frail and being alone. I don't have kids and I probably won't have kids in the future. What if my partner dies before me and I'm alone and old? The older you get the less your body works and thinking about my future "golden years". It freaks me out and gives me anxiety. Up to the point that I start crying. Also seeing older people, especially ones that are feeble and have problems walking for example, really gets me.

Wood Especially wet wood I think it comes from those awful little ice cream cups, with the tiny little wooden spoons. I was always terrified that I’d get a splinter in my mouth 🤮

I have PTSD from workplace bullying so I have been unable to return to any workplace, even as a volunteer. Can't handle loud environments with too many people - even shopping or excursions also trigger me. I don't get panic attacks any more but I do have to have a quiet lie down after such experiences. In response to many of the fears expressed in this list, unless they can be traced to a present life source, then they may have a past life source. Past life regression is a proven assistance, as can meditation. Love to all!

Giant flora and fauna. I’m dead serious. It’s ridiculous. Fortunately though, it’s not something I stumble across everyday. In fact I was 20 before I realised I had this stupid fear. At first I didn’t even understand what was happening; one moment I was walking into the giant vegetable competition tent at a local fair, and the next I was outside on my hands and knees having a panic attack… Through trial-and-hyperventilating-error, it turns out it’s really specific too- only the vegetables *in proportion* set me off… A unreasonably long, but very skinny carrot doesn’t phase me at all. But show me a perfectly proportioned carrot as thick as my arm? Existential dread. Palpitations. The overwhelming urge to run away. A few years ago I was in Vegas in a very nice hotel. I happened upon a chocolate-dipped strawberry the size of a child’s fist. I threw-up a bit in my mouth and started to cry. Giant animals don’t evoke so strong a reaction, but they do give me a wicked case of the heebie-jeebies, making me sweaty and shakey. Just *the perception* that an animal is oversized is enough to do it. I was having a lovely time at the petting zoo until my daughter pointed out that the capybaras looked like ‘giant Guinea pigs’ and… I ran. I am ashamed to say I abandoned my firstborn and was over the fence in seconds. So now Capybaras have joined giant tortoises in the absurd category of cute animals I have to ‘psych myself up for’. I’m in my late 30s. I have a good degree. Last week my children witnessed me yeet a punnet of grapes across the kitchen :-/

Railings. On balconys, anywhere high up. Because they CAN give in so you WILL fall.

I seem to have a bit of an irrational fear of swimming in dark lake water like I think a big fish is going to come get me. I must have been eaten by a shark in a past life.
