Artist Willie Hsu draws eerie sketches of animals and people that appear as if they have been trapped behind glass. With each drawing constructed using clever shadowing, it makes them appear as if they are real, three-dimensional, and are trying to reach out to the viewer from the afterlife through the page.

"There’s just something about the enigmatic beauty surrounding the unknown that I find truly intriguing," the artist told Bored Panda. "I often wonder what happens when someone passes and they haven’t fulfilled their purpose. Do they stay among the living, trapped in the amber of their regrets? Waiting in the moments they wish could be rectified? Or do they just hover aimlessly behind a mysterious layer of fog-filled purgatory? I want each and every ghostly figure I create to tell a story or to convey a message," Willie Hsu explains.

"My artistic background started at a very young age, Willie Hsu told Bored Panda. "I’ve been drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil. Art was and still is my escape to a place where anything’s possible. All I have to do is imagine and create."

"In the first piece I created showcasing this style, I drew a shapeless figure lost in fog with only its hands seemingly pressed up and in focus. I wanted to create the illusion that there was a thin layer of glass separating the subject from the viewer. Everything snowballed after that. This style of mine quickly developed to feed my hungry curiosity for ghosts and to satisfy my insatiable fascination with the afterlife," Willie Hsu explained.

"Some [drawings] are products of my own experiences," the artist revealed to Bored Panda. "In times of sadness, loss, or heartbreak, people say the best thing to do is talk to someone. But for someone like me who tends to keep emotional lows bottled up, the only place for me to pour it out is onto a blank canvas. Art is the simplest way for me to cathartically express myself."

"These pieces are mostly created using various graphite pencils, graphite powder, brushes, and blending stumps. Just think of it as painting with graphite. Sometimes I’ll use grey wash watercolor, ink, and charcoal as well," speaking about his techniques Willie Hsu told Bored Panda.
