The death tolls change, the locations vary, but public mass shootings remain a constant in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 12,504 gun deaths in the country this year alone, and even though mass shootings only account for a tiny fraction of this number (307 or 2.5%), these incidents have left the whole country terrified of their wild unpredictability.
The victims of these shootings were innocent people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This has led many activists to question U.S gun laws, saying that 89 firearms per 100 residents isn't normal. Moreover, a cross-section study found that of all the 50 states, the six states with the strictest gun control had lower suicide rates. Another paper also pointed out that children living in states with stricter gun laws were safer. The list of scientific studies backing-up gun control are numerous, but some people still vehemently disagree with this evidence and argue that guns don't kill people, people do. They also like to spice up the gun control debates by stating that such measures would violate their 2nd amendment rights.
A review of published studies on gun control facts released in October 2003 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was unable to determine any statistically significant effects that would result from such laws, either. It's clear this ongoing debate among Americans isn't slowing down anytime soon, just take a look to the savage roasts on Twitter. However, within the many, many tweets that discuss this subject matter, there are some that lack reason and logic. Luckily, people instantly call them out with perfectly good comebacks. And, to our delight, sometimes they use sarcasm and humor to do so. Fancy comebacks such as this may seem to prove something, but they don't. A lot of times they give the illusion of it, but don't connect. In this case, it might sum it up, but the better response would be to think, "Of course, you're right. There are a lot of sharks in the water. That's why I'm getting my own shark that might just help me protect myself from other sharks." We all know guns are dangerous, that's the point. But if we use them to help ourselves and others to protect against other dangerous sharks or guns, then that helps us.

The place where you'll meet the least resistance. Do you lock your doors at night or put up a big sign saying, "No locks, no guns, no phone to call cops?" How else would you protect yourself? Discussion? A police force would help in schools and churches/synagogues. Shooters only go where there is no gun presence. The ones caught have said so. It would be a great to stay in a foolish world. In complete bliss. When you need a police officer, does he/she carry? Yes.

When a shark attacks someone, is it the sharks fault? Are there readily available courses to train you how to use a shark in self defense? Are there former shark users, such as the military shark squads, or shark law enforcement officers, that go on to have careers as teachers? Has anybody ever used a shark to attack somebody else? Is it obvious yet how ridiculous it is to compare a dangerous wild animal with an inanimate object? Please use some logic people.

Even though I don't believe that this idea would ever work in any universe, I still understand the false equivalency here. These things are not the same and, if we somehow came up with enough money to allocate to armed guards in schools it would be quite effective. And it would open more jobs. The equivalency of sharks to protect you against other sharks is so ridiculously far apart from the original idea that the joke loses credibility.

A terrorist attack just occurred in Bourke St, Melbourne Australia, centre of the city.He used a knife. One man killed, two injured. Passerbys attempted to slow him down with a shopping trolley,witches cones. He was shot by police. One death was one too many, but could you imagine the carnage he could have wrought if he had been armed with a ak-15?

I'm British, and I still don't understand the need to arm everyone with guns, and I can't turn on the news without the story of another stabbing victim in or around London. Yes, we have an armed division of our police force, but they're only used in extreme circumstances. In America, you get a bullet to the head for carrying around a water pistol, or a Nerf gun.

They are like a broken record: "But muh 2nd amendment", ''but my right to defend myself', ''but what if we get invaded', 'but what if the government turns fascist'. /// Your favorite 2nd amendment is two centuries old and doesn't factor in such things as fully automatic, high caliber weapons that can kill from hundreds of meters. And in the history of USA how many times have you been invaded? Is Canada plotting to invade you, or are you afraid of the dolphins in the ocean? And if the government does turn fascist and you form a militia how exactly do you think that will work out for you against better equipped, better trained soldiers with access to IFVs, tanks, the navy and the air force? That is going to be one short civil war.

The one I love is when they say, "If a person wants to kill someone bad enough he can use a spoon." OK, then why do you carry guns instead of spoons??? A spoon costs far less than a gun, it doesn't use ammo and it has no moving parts so it's infinitely more reliable. Plus you can carry as many concealed spoons as you want and nobody is ever going to hassle you about having a concealed spoon permit. So if you believe your own b******t then why are you spending so much money on guns and ammo instead of far less on spoons? Oh yeah... because you know you're full of s**t.

Okay I have some questions I am hoping someone can help with. When did mass shootings become a regular occurrence in the USA. For the past couple of years it seems there is a mass shootings every few of months. Basically when did this become the norm and more importantly why did this become the norm. I am sure when I grew up in the 70's & 80's they weren't this regular. So what changed since then?

As an American, my experience is that guns are a vicious cycle. People buy them because they're scared of shootings then their kid steals it to shoot up a school, then people around them buy guns and the cycle continues.

I'm OK with gun ownership when: 1. They are allowed in Congress by the people 2. When they are allowed in courts by the people 3. When they are allowed in the White House Why should these classes of citizens be afforded different protections? They can all have guns, too. Why should churchgoers, children, people at a concert have less protections?

I'm against people having assualt rifles but I have a shotgun, a pistol and a 22 rifle. my grandfather and great grandfather were gunsmiths with Colt and Winchester.. As simple as both sides believe this topic is, it's actually a very complicated problem. We have to work on reducing gun violence without ignoring the rights of Americans guaranteed by the Constitution. While you may disagree with the supreme courts interpretation of the 2nd amendment, a lot of people agree with it but I think we can all agree that gun deaths should be lower in the US. As funny as jokes about gun owners = small weiners and anti gun people = snowflakes are, they don't move the needle in the correct direction. If you hate guns, talk to someone you trust about why they feel the way they do, and gun owners should reach out to someone who totally disagrees with them for the same reason. I'm sure a broader understanding of this subject will help everyone make more informed voting decisions and make intelligent arguments to their representatives. I'm stepping off of my soup box now and will accept my down votes because my post doesn' with the biased tone of this panda page.

Damn. So many downvotes. Even though I am all for gun bans. Dilly yes I have recorded them. I have 8 security cameras around my house. I have showed them the footage. They always say, “Don’t worry. We will deal with this.”, but nothing is being done. My only guess is they are friends with the neighbors. I wish I could move like you mentioned, but I don’t have the money. I can barely keep the bills paid with what little I have. I don’t know who else I’m supposed to go to about this. Also, yes I always worry what will happen to my kids if I’m in jail, but I’d rather be in jail and lose them than they end up getting hurt or killed. I wish there was an easy solution. Thanks for the advice though. I’m sure I will figure something out. Have a nice day.

Didn't they have the right to go about their business safely? Without fear of being shot? I feel zero fear of being shot when I walk alone late at night in the capital city I live in, because hardly anyone in my country has a gun. I like it very much. I might be robbed, but that's all. And I have never been robbed.

NRA has "almost 5 million members". US census estimates 326.7 - 327.1 million adults. That means each one of the 5mil NRA people have a grip on the "balls" of 65 Adults. How have we Not been able to force change?

Im Canadian so I'm not very in tune with whats happening in the states or "down there" lol as we call it, but wow you guys sound like you can't get your s**t together. STOP KILLING EACH OTHER FFS!!!!! We have guns, I own 3 hunting rifles. Most of my friends hunt. Your crazy to walk in the bush up here without one but nobody is getting shot. Btw, pistols, semi auto, and fully auto weapons are for killing people, not squirrels or deer. Start there

Okay I have some questions I am hoping someone can help with. When did mass shootings become a regular occurrence in the USA. For the past couple of years it seems there is a mass shootings every few of months. Basically when did this become the norm and more importantly why did this become the norm. I am sure when I grew up in the 70's & 80's they weren't this regular. So what changed since then?

This is not actually a post about pros and cons of gun ownership but about logical fallacies. Any "pro gun" example features her eis outright stupid. Although as a European I can only shake my head about the gun obsession in the US, single sided stories do not contribute to the discussion in either way.

Why are civilians armed? Why do Americans want guns? Why are Americans shooting one another? What is going on with you guys? Why are you all on drugs and killing one another just because you can? Where did it all go wrong? Why do kids have any access to guns at all? Why are they shooting their classmates? Why are so many Americans in support of more guns? Why is America at war with itself? If you want to shoot everyone you don't like, remember there's someone that doesn't like you. If everyone were like you, you would've been shot in the head by now. Put your guns down and let go of all the hate in your heart. America is a blessed country but you guys don't know the value of what you have. Stop destroying yourselves. Stop shooting one another.

As an American, my experience is that guns are a vicious cycle. People buy them because they're scared of shootings then their kid steals it to shoot up a school, then people around them buy guns and the cycle continues.

Guns are designed to kill. If you point a loaded gun at a person pull and the trigger then that person is probably going to be injured or maybe even killed. What else do I really need to know?

I'm OK with gun ownership when: 1. They are allowed in Congress by the people 2. When they are allowed in courts by the people 3. When they are allowed in the White House Why should these classes of citizens be afforded different protections? They can all have guns, too. Why should churchgoers, children, people at a concert have less protections?

I think they should take everyone's else's guns but let me have mine.lol. but seriously this is a hard topic. I'm against people having assualt rifles but I have a shotgun, a pistol and a 22 rifle. my grandfather and great grandfather were gunsmiths with Colt and Winchester.. These are guns made by them, I'd never give them up.

Not a gun rights person,I think they should be better regulated, but I do wish that more Europeans had had them in the 1930's. it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the holocaust, but it would have been nice to know that a few extra nazis ate a last meal of lead salad.

As simple as both sides believe this topic is, it's actually a very complicated problem. We have to work on reducing gun violence without ignoring the rights of Americans guaranteed by the Constitution. While you may disagree with the supreme courts interpretation of the 2nd amendment, a lot of people agree with it but I think we can all agree that gun deaths should be lower in the US. As funny as jokes about gun owners = small weiners and anti gun people = snowflakes are, they don't move the needle in the correct direction. If you hate guns, talk to someone you trust about why they feel the way they do, and gun owners should reach out to someone who totally disagrees with them for the same reason. I'm sure a broader understanding of this subject will help everyone make more informed voting decisions and make intelligent arguments to their representatives. I'm stepping off of my soup box now and will accept my down votes because my post doesn' with the biased tone of this panda page.

Damn. So many downvotes. Even though I am all for gun bans. Dilly yes I have recorded them. I have 8 security cameras around my house. I have showed them the footage. They always say, “Don’t worry. We will deal with this.”, but nothing is being done. My only guess is they are friends with the neighbors. I wish I could move like you mentioned, but I don’t have the money. I can barely keep the bills paid with what little I have. I don’t know who else I’m supposed to go to about this. Also, yes I always worry what will happen to my kids if I’m in jail, but I’d rather be in jail and lose them than they end up getting hurt or killed. I wish there was an easy solution. Thanks for the advice though. I’m sure I will figure something out. Have a nice day.

Pointing out problems in other area doesn't make the one you have with guns go away. You do need to ban guns and sod the pissed off people, children are being killed. Australia turned it around and solved their gun problem so America could too.

It's almost as if all the evidence of how well it works without guns in other countries, where they have much lower crime statistics, is constantly ignored. It's almost as if pro gun Americans don't care about the 12000 plus people being killed annually, the deaths of children. It's almost as if they can't see how well Australia got control over gun crime and yet Australians still hunt and haven't been invaded. As if facts are constantly ignored because, wah, we want our guns.

I think you are very mistaken, if you think just any low level little robber or thief would know how to obtain a gun illegally, if he couldn't get one legally. Your country has one of the highest gun murder rates in the world, not because you happen to have more criminals for some strange reason, but because you make it incredibly easy for them to obtain weapons.

Hey, Tyler - this is an INTERNATIONAL SITE. Lots of different laws in countries across the world and none of them have America's gun problem. Rights!!! FFS - what about the people who were killed? Didn't they have the right to go about their business safely? Without fear of being shot? Gun owners clearly don't do what they are supposed to - so they probably shouldn't have the guns in the first place. Probably most countries think health care is a right. Why do some Americans think their laws haven't changed since the constitution was written? Do a bit of reading why don't you. Kids deliberately antagonize teachers. Sooner or later somewhere a teacher will loose it. Normally they just shout for a few minutes along the lines how the kids will never amount to anything. The end result is a sore throat for the teacher for a few days. Now imagine for one second the teacher is armed...
