People From The USA And Other Countries Show How Much Groceries Cost Where They Live (30 Pics)
According to a survey conducted by The Harris Poll, about 90% of Americans are concerned about food prices. And how could they not be when inflation is now the highest in about 40 years.
That means that shoppers have to cut down on staples such as bread, meat, dairy, fruit, and vegetables, or switch them for cheaper alternatives. Meanwhile, more vulnerable people will have no choice but to skip meals.
No wonder more and more people are already forced to alter their shopping habits and reevaluate the grocery list and things that fell under the essentials category.
And to put inflation into perspective, people from all around the world are now sharing pics of their grocery hauls showing what money can buy you in these difficult times. Below, we selected some of the most illuminating ones that shoppers shared on Reddit.

$35 Worth Of Groceries In Brazil!
$35 here is R$175,00. Sometimes its almost my whole cash to buy food for the month...
Mas fruta e legumes 175,00 tá esquisito. Faltou alguma proteína ai nessa foto pra dar esse preço
Load More Replies...Man, I would never be able to eat my way through that before it started to spoil.
If the fruit is actually fresh and you sanitize it properly (kill microbes), depending on the fruit it would last over a week. Put some of them in the fridge and they will last 3 or 4 weeks.
Load More Replies...That’s 35$ worth of fruit in basically any country. This is not really a proper comparison. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Where's the beef? I know a few Brazilians and none of them are vegetarian.
The fruit look awesome, but I just cannot stand the heat, that's why huge parts of the world are off limits for me 😭😭😭
Load More Replies...Recently Moved From The USA: Here's €29.00 ($30.25) Of Budget Groceries In Munich, Germany
Cabbages, root vegetables, onions, garlics and apples are very cheap in Europe. Most of his €29 went to the other things.
Load More Replies...OP here. The bratwurst, ham, cherries, hummus, cheese, and smaller radish were all nearing the sell-by date and were half off, totaling only 6.65 euros, around 6.80 USD Bread is 1.89 and Milk is 1.09 euros, so quite affordable. The most expensive things were the cabbages at 1.99/kilo, totaling just under 5 euros.
What do you do/cook with all that daikon radish?
Load More Replies...Can someone explain, please? Is this person surprised because it's much cheaper in Germany, or because it is much more expensive? No idea about US prices, but this looks about right for budget groceries in the UK.
It's much cheaper, depending on where you shop. This is easily $60+ USD, I'd say.
Load More Replies...And that is already including brand hummus and lactose free milk, which can be kind of pricey. Probably some of that produce is even organic. To the original poster: Are you sure you just recently came from the US? Because it does not get any more German than bratwurst, radish and whole grain bread...
The Lidl, where these groceries come from sells lactose free milk and hummus under their own brand name, which makes it a lot cheaper. The quality is the same, or better, though.
Load More Replies...Living myself in Germany, for 1 person a grocery-shopping for a week with fruits-veggies, meat-fish is between 40-50 euro.
That's interesting. I also live in Germany and we (2 people) pay 50 euro for two people for one week of groceries. Of course, we're vegan so that's a lot cheaper. But, I meant to say that it’s interesting that costs can differ so much in one country
Load More Replies...Germany is cheap on the basic food groups like Bread, Butter, Milk, Eggs, Fruits even Meat is cheaper there on Sale which they have every week for at least 5 Supermarkets
$4.45 Worth Of Produce In Argentina (Currency Crashed Again Today)
That is cheap! For that amount of money I could get lettuce, bananas, carrots and maybe garlic.
How cheap it is depends on how much you earn.
Load More Replies...For those that say it is cheap. It is not. $4.45 USD is between $600 to $1200 local currency. With a minimum salary that is around $44,000 a month, that equals to between $170 to $320 USD. So, not cheap. Difference in USD amounts is between the official and street exchange rate.
Minimum wage in Arg is about Usd 200 and the average is about 450, most people in and below the m inimum cannot afford produce, they base their nutrition in low quality carbs and processed food.
Unfortunately some people aren't grasping the concept of currency exchange, or this thread. Their "average" pay, is MUCH lower than the majority of the people commenting. To us it may seem "cheap", but to others, these are very expensive items.
It would really help tho to put the average wage in the titles too
Load More Replies...En cualquier lado eso es muy barato. Los argentinos no están acostumbrados a pagar precios "normales". Siempre lloran por los precios de todas las cosas.
Food prices are on fire, and chances are you probably have felt it already. In fact, they were a whopping 9.4% higher in April 2022 than in April 2021 which made it the largest annual increase in 41 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, grocery prices jumped 10.8% for the year and that does not reflect seasonal swings.
A number of factors are to blame for the rising food prices. They range from something as simple as bad weather and post-pandemic disruptions in supply chains, and increased demand due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has increased wheat and other commodity prices.
This Is What £80 Worth Of Groceries Looks Like In London
That is not £80 spent in Waitrose, Sainsbury's or Tesco's. It's Lidl or Aldi which are perfectly fine (love a bit of Aldi) if this was Waitrose you can literally half the amount on the conveyor.
Load More Replies...Holy cow! That much food in the Southern US would cost me about $200
That would be about $300 ...maybe more in Maine. I regularly spend $140 on one bag
That actually pretty good considering the picture I've seen the other highest country right now is Australia and us Americans are having it high. Wish we lived somewhere else at this time
$95.41? Try here even at a discount bulk store like sam's club this is at least $230 if not more
I live in London and went to visit my family in south NJ recently. I was absolutely shocked at how high the grocery prices were!
What $67 Of Groceries Looks Like From A Discount Grocery In One Of The Poorest Towns In Texas
It’s really dependent on when this was bought… that’s a LOT of fresh produce, and that isn’t cheap! The US has a major problem with healthy foods not being affordable. The bananas and onions are usually cheap, but those 2 peaches would probably be $2 in season. Ranier Cherries are $8.99/pound right now. They are one fruit, IMO, that is worth it, though - they are from Mt Ranier in Washington State, and taste like cherry candy - sweet, not tart!
Where in Texas do YOU live? Here in DFW peaches are $1.99 a pound. Cherries, $4.99 a pound. Chicken is cheap. So are plenty of different meats.
Load More Replies...Looks like the meat was $14, which is pretty cheap for steak. $10 for the Topo Chicos. This looks more like he's going to a BBQ rather than a normal weekly shop for meals. He's got the makings for a lot of salsa and guac, with some serious chilis I might add. All that and a lot of fruit is a good deal for the money. I'd end up spending way more than $67 here in the SF Bay Area. It has one of the higher costs of living in the US. That steak would be $25/lb, $35 if you want grass fed.
Load More Replies...Those individual protective sleeves on the pears make me so mad. Those are used to guard against poor handling and are single use. They serve this purpose for maybe a few days, then will sit in a landfill essentially forever. So arrogant, like a big F-U to the earth.
OMG, converted to South African Rands and that works out R 1,121.58.....damn, we get WAY more for that
I did too, in South Africa, we can probably get all this for about R150 to R200. ($8.96 to $11.94)
Load More Replies...Texas is not known for growing produce. So all that produce cost money to import.
You are so wrong. Literally every single item on here is grown in Texas.
Load More Replies...Those aren’t Rainer cherries though, Rainer cherries are yellow blush colored cherries. And you’re right, they are worth the price!!!
Half of that looks like ingredients for salsa. I haven't bought steak in over a year. The sticker shock has just been too much for me to overcome.
This Is $100 Worth Of Groceries In The South Suburbs Of Chicago
This person shops like I do when it comes to meat. Buy the large family packs and split them up into smaller portions and then label and freeze. Cuts down on the grocery bill when I only need to buy ingredients for my menus.
Oh yes...look at all that chicken.....I would've added family pack of pork chops maybe even a london broil if it was reasonable
Load More Replies...That is so much food for $100! In my small town in ID, the chicken alone would be $30 a pkg.
Now, this is one of the few on here that shows enough groceries to feed an adult for a week, maybe even an adult and small child, if they’re careful, and don’t snack in between meals. They may all be chicken-centered meals, but full meals nonetheless. Combined with food from previous shopping, like if they have rice they bought a couple weeks ago, they can add that to the chicken and veggies as a change from the tortellini. Eggs can be breakfasts, and leftovers can be lunches. There’s even some danish for dessert (or breakfast). But where’s the bread? Maybe they already have some—-stores will often have specials, and you can freeze bread.
I try to buy only "on sale", specially Beef. The same pack family of NY Steaks I just got for $5.99lb were $14.99lb the day before. Don't know about where you live but here in California the price of meat is totally out of control, we rarely eat it as entrée, but it's to have it if you do. ✌️
It is out of control. We stick to chicken thighs/legs and ground beef most of the time, bcuz it's cheapest. We make a lot of big one pot meals, to feed our large family, of 7. 5 are men or almost men. (Chili, spaghetti, chicken and dumplings, chicken curry) We really can't afford to live in Ca anymore.
Load More Replies...The meat alone would cost 100.00 or more in WA state! By the looks of what's there it would likely cost 200 or more in WA state
Not a luxury in Chicago. I live there and shrimp is neck and neck with other fish and sometimes beats meat in price.
Load More Replies...In the US, the deadly and highly infectious avian flu left local farmers with no option but to kill millions of egg-laying hens. As a result, the country's egg supply was substantially reduced which drove up prices. The damage to the egg industry hit consumers hard in April when egg prices soared 10.3%, adjusted for seasonal changes. Without those adjustments, egg prices spiked 22.6% over the 12 months ending in April.
Among many foods, meat and dairy products got significantly pricier. Bacon cost 17.7% more, and chicken prices were up by 16.4%, CNN reports. Meanwhile, butter and margarine together went up by 19.2% and milk prices went up 14.7%, with fresh whole milk jumping 15.5%.

Forget Real Estate, Wtf Is Up With Grocery Prices
The milk label says Meadow Gold...which is a company based out of Hawaii. So I am guessing it is there...and everything in HI is horribly overpriced. Not the best example of regular American "groceries", imo.
Load More Replies...And it doesn't even come with the cow! For that price I want to hear mooing
Alaska or Hawaii maybe? Dairy is heavily subsidized in the US and I haven’t seen a price hike anywhere near that.
I saw a sliced mango pack going for 20$ yesterday in Houston TX. As well as 13$ for a pack of 4-5 bratwurst. So I dunno…
Big Brand milk here in Cali $6.99gal, 1 shelf down store brand $3.69...ALWAYS look at the lower shelves, it where the less expensive items live. My guess is the milk shown above is either in Hawaii or Alaska✌️
Yeah, definitely not the same prices as in Alaska. Cheapest Pre-Pandemic price for a can of "Easy Cheese" (generic/off brand) in Alaska was around $13-$14 dollars PER CAN - Before 2020. In Colorado, $2 per can Pre-Pandemic. Idk what the price is for that same item in Alaska now, probably twice that today. ☹️ The Price for that can in Colorado today is about $3 - $4 per can.
Load More Replies...Wow. I've never seen a gallon of milk anywhere near that. Where is this?
$40 Worth Of Groceries In 2022. Washington, Dc
Most expensive item here is the Wyman’s at about $11. This is Whole Foods which has notoriously high prices. Also, owned by Amazon, so that’s a hard pass.
Agreed, but this is not Whole Foods...they use paper bags, and the bags in the pic says "Safeway"...
Load More Replies...Ok I live in DC Area, I'm checking these prices at Safeway right now.. Kraft salad dressing 16 oz bottle $3.29 Fairlife milk $4.29 Dawn dish soap $3.99 Wyman's mango Berry frozen fruit $14.99 Kikkoman's less sodium soy sauce $3.39 Double stuff Oreos $5.29 O organics basil $2.49 This adds up to $37.73 today but most of this stuff is on sale right now, except for the milk and frozen fruit and is $25.89 before Tax. I never buy Frozen fruit at Safeway, giant or Harris teeter I always buy it at Aldi or Costco it's a lot cheaper there.
DC being one of the most expensive places to live in the US, not shocked!
I think this is completely believable! In the tiny, pretty poor farm town I live in (which is in Texas and has around 3000 people in it,) it costs $30 to buy coffee (ground, not name-brand), sugar, creamer (not name-brand), filters, a twelve pack of pop (not name-brand) and a loaf of bread. Since this picture is supposed to be DC and Safeway has always been expensive, it's completely feasible!
I don't think this is whole foods. That organic brand on the herbs is Safeway packaging
Some of that is even food and I can't tell what the blue canister is but I'll bet it's the pricey item.
Moreover, flour prices have also seen a whopping surge of 14% and coffee by 13.5%. As you may already have noticed, fruits and vegetables also got a lot more expensive, as citrus shot up 18.6% and lettuce rose 12.7%. Simultaneously, canned fruits and veggies were also affected with a price increase of 10.4%.
For those who enjoy eating out at restaurants every now and then, this may become a luxury. According to CNN, menu prices grew 7.2% for the year, because operators raised prices to counterbalance the surge in the cost of produce.
$91 Worth Of Groceries In Wisconsin
That's where I shop! All I can afford right now
Load More Replies...I went to Aldi yesterday. 2 heads of broccoli, ranch dressing, box of cereal, half-gallon of milk, a creme mint chocolate bar and a paper bag. $9.59. Would be almost $15 at local store, gotta love Aldi!
I went a few hours ago and got two bunches of asparagus, a half gallon of milk, some olive oil, and a bag of flour (I brought my own bag) for $11. Aldi is the absolute best!!
Load More Replies...I heckin' love Aldi. So glad there's one within 15 minutes walking distance from where I live.
I average 80 bucks per week on food if I shop at Aldi, nearby Wegmans ridiculous, 12 something for a half gallon of organic lemonade.
Jesus. I'm sure I could get that lot for under £40 in my local Aldi. Probably nearer £30.
Aldi in the US is definitely cheaper than other stores, but more expensive with less selection than in Germany and Austria. Ours don't have a fresh selection (at least in Florida), and no bakery. I haven't been to Aldi in the UK in years so I couldn't compare it to the US.
Load More Replies...I just don’t see a week’s worth of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners here.
$140.33 Of Groceries For 5 Dinners, 7+ Breakfasts, Snacks For A Family Of 4 In Georgia, USA
Now's the time to incorporate some vegetarian meals, it seems! Eta: I was in no way being preachy. Meat is expensive -- I live in Georgia and likely pay similar prices for food. I also didn't say they weren't eating vegetables. 🙃
Wow! Georgia has incredibly low food prices. Eggs in Arco, Idaho are $6 for 12 right now. Ground beef and chicken are same price per pound at $5.79/lb.
For that price you might want to buy chickens and lay your own!
Load More Replies...What part of Ga is this bcuz I'm obviously shopping in the wrong places
I live in Georgia too and that's about how much I'd be paying as well. Depending on the store. If I bout the same exact groceries this poster is showing I'm.sure it'll be about the same. Give or take a few dollars. Might save this picture and see.
People love to say eat less meat but a lot of people can't handle beans even with "beano" and all those stupid rinse and turn around 3 times or whatever. It's not just farts it severe stomach pain for a couple of hours.
There are so many more alternatives then BEANS! My niece chose to go vegan a couple years ago & it’s made me very aware of all the non meat choices out there. Go hit a Trader Joe’s & ask for a non meat recommendation that the whole family will love. You will have options! Challenge yourself to go meatless 1night a week. Better for you, the environment & you’ll find all kinds of new recipes you love.

THIS. This is more what I am used to seeing after spending about $100 in my area as well...this is way more typical than some of these other crazy hauls...and I would have gotten a bit more by not buying those pre packaged microwavable meats at the right end of the counter...buy some breasts and grill your own much cheaper.
Cut ‘em some slack, will ya? Maybe those are for the nights they just don’t f*****g feel like cooking when they get home.
Load More Replies...Everybody complaining about oh it's cheaper to do this and do it from scratch blah blah 80% of people work 40 plus hours a week and take care of the household not everybody can come home and do that , we'd love to be able to do that but we can't, so instead of feeding our kids a bowl of cereal sometimes by the prepackaged meats it might not be the best but it's better than the alternative.
But America is far from the only place that has been affected by drastic inflation and skyrocketing prices. A similar situation has been reported in the UK, as well as many European countries. Many shoppers have already felt the hit of increased grocery bills and they are now sharing what and how much food money can buy them in different places around the world.

This is about pricing NOT about judgement! Unless you're there you can't say anything and you shouldn't anyways unless you want to be judged.
Once upon a time I used to eat bags of chips as a treat. Then as an adult it became an actual meal because I couldn't afford much and they at least filled me. Now we're back to being a treat.
This Is $70 Worth Of Groceries When You Just Buy Random, Non Essential Items And Live In The Midwest
in the US, highly processed is usually the cheapest option. Eating fruits and vegetables is crazy expensive (compared to Europe, where it's the other way around, or.. used to be.. its changing that direction too now)
Load More Replies...I do not really see groceries here - except from the milk and the paper towls. The rest ist just (overpriced) mostly sugary snacks. But the calory count depicted is sufficient for a week, so you should be alright...
I don't know where this person gets "non essential" from. A fudge round was a whole meal for many of my classmates growing up. When your family is poor as dirt, that's the only way to get enough calories to not pass out during class on their budget. Also, snow fox sushi is one of the only ways to get prepared "healthy" or international food using food assistance programs. Sometimes you just need something you can rip open and eat with your hands that is more filling than a bag of chips. Working retail and service industries leaves very little energy for cooking, especially with multiple jobs. As far as the energy drinks goes, going without food for long periods makes eating really hard. It becomes easier to drink your calories and a protein shake is far too expensive and has far fewer stimulants to get you through your double shift than an energy drink. What most of the world terms non essential is considered survival food here. Poverty drastically changes the game with diet.
I want to try the Haribo Twin Snakes we don't get them here in SA but we do het other Haribo sweets
Haribo Twin Snakes are the food of the gods! You must try them once they hit SA
Load More Replies...The sushi and energy drinks are no doubt jacking up that grocery bill.
$70 Worth Of Groceries In Adelaide, South Australia
Is most of the produce in Australia from other countries? Why is it so expensive?
everything here has gotten more expensive- but especially farmed items (fruit, veggies, milk). our farmers are often caught in floods or droughts. the suicide rate among farmers is quite high because of how it can get
Load More Replies...But an Australian dollar is about 2/3 of a US dollar, so this could be around US$45
I’m Australian I don’t pay that much for that If I got that I would pay $30
I don't know where you live but that would cost me around $60-$70 IN Perth and we don't have the currently overly inflated produce prices.
Load More Replies...COVID meant farmers couldn't get their usual (cheap) overseas workers, so a lot either ploughed food under or only harvested parts of their crops. Hence, shortages. Then the supermarkets screw them over for price but maximise their own profit margin - so, prices went up.
Compounded by the repeated severe flooding of the Eastern States which has devastated the crops and inflated the prices ridiculously. Also, too many lazy Aussies who wouldn't deign to do farm work for their money.
Load More Replies...Our food bowl areas are under flood for about the 4th time this year. An iceberg lettuce which you could buy for $2-3 is now $10.
(I live in Adelaide South Australia) I don't think this is entirely accurate. It depends where you buy your fruit and veg....my bill would be much cheaper as I go to a discount (seconds) fruit and veg store. The quality is excellent but they are deeming cosmetically flawed (over/under sized/marks on the skin) The grocer buys what is in season and buys to items that are over stocked in the market. I notice that most of the products are "name brand ", I buy home brand with the exception of items that are not as good in home brand. I get way more groceries for $70 than is displayed in the above picture
It's pretty obvious that this is a Woolworths shop. I just priced most of it up on the app and $70 is a low estimate. I know that I would be paying that approximate price in Perth and we haven't truly been hit by the issues caused by flooding. By not buying Homebrand products in this particular shop, the total went up approximately $5 - not really significant.
Load More Replies...Australia subsidized fresh meats and produce to make things more affordable. . . The popcorn was probably one of the more expensive items shown
Fresh produce and meat is very expensive in Australia. That cauliflower is $5.90, bag of capsicums $7.90, cucumber $3.50, 6 bananas approx $4-$5, zucchini $1.20, broccoli $3.27, the punnet of mushys $6.50, corn $4.90, pack of Roma tomato $5.90. These are the current prices at the specific supermarket these were purchased from. Just an example of our produce prices.

He posted this grocery haul that cost him $30.25 in one of the subreddits.
Moreover, a lot of his usual brands became pricier: “From 1.99 to 2.50 EUR for oatmeal or .99 to 1.20 EUR for ham, a euro more for chicken. Tiny differences, but they add up.”
What 2,131¥(15.76usd) Worth Of Grocery Look Like In Japan
The eggs look huge compared to what I buy. When I watch egg recipes being prepared on You Tube I am surprised by how large , sometimes huge, the eggs are. Asia. Europe. The eggs I get in the USA are pathetically small, even the extra large ones. I swear that eggs used to be larger here.
If I recall right, their processing of eggs in Asia is WAY better than here. I think the docu mentioned something like 1 to 3 in every 100k eggs has salmonella. That's why they're so comfortable with raw egg dishes. I feel like we get it just from touching eggshells in the US.
Load More Replies...The Japanese revere food like no one I've ever seen elsewhere, and I travel extensively in the Mediterranean. The food is good from the beginning, and they waste virtually nothing edible. Canada (me) and the US (also me) are some of the biggest wasters of food I've ever seen.
Are eggs sold by tens in Japan? I'm just so used to dozens that any other number looks really odd to me. Like something's missing.
Does Japan not eat meat, other then Sushi? (Not trying to sound ignorant, just curious)
from what i know, since japan is directly connected to the sea, lots of seafood/fish/crustaceans and octopi. bugs such as bee larva are not common but can be found in landlocked areas of the japan countryside where sources of protein are scarce. i believe many meats have been at this point imported or taken on by japan (like the rest of the world took on sushi) but seafood is absolutely a staple. sushi is only one small section of a wide range of seafood

Yup...this look like a Whole Foods buy. There this a reason people jokingly call it "Whole Paycheck"...this is NOT typical of a $200 grocery trip in the US. Edit: It has been brought to my attention this is New Seasons. Still not a typical grocery and still WAY higher than normal.
Load More Replies...This isn't really a good indication seeing as a lot of this is the more expensive products. Of course your grocery bill is going to be high when buying the more luxury brands and organic foods.
Well, "certified organic" and "all natural" products are extremely expensive, especially at independent groceries.
There is absolutely no reason for this picture to be here. Everything they're showing is luxury food, which is always more expensive than store brands. If they paid $200 for this, they knew exactly what they were doing. Even the meat, which is in the brown butcher paper, has to be either some sort of specialty, or they requested a specific cut from the butcher. Had anything here been under $200 total, I would have been amazed.
I'm guessing this is mostly organic produce which is always more pricey.
Lots of meat and organic produce in an expensive part of the country, so not too surprising

That would be $130+ in my town SE Ohio. College towns jack prices so badly locals are pushed out.
A single person could live off this for a week, if they’re not a glutton.
That's certainly not Northeastern Ohio. BIG difference for the worse over here.
I've lived in NE Ohio all my life...This seems about right and it also depends on where you shop. The big chain grocery stores like Giant Eagle are expensive. 90.00 doesn't go far there, but you can get twice as much from Aldi's or Save-a-lot. We get fresh eggs from local farms about a 1/2 hour away for $1 per dozen.

Don't know where in Canada this food to cost is correlative...but not in saskatchewan...a zone of high agricultural yield.....and equally high food costs; costs that seem to be multiplying for ALL food, imported or local, each time news broadcasts claim a difficulty incurred by any type of crop production, movement or storage in any single state or country in the world.
I see no name brand. Going out on a limb here and saying you shopped at superstore. Normally a cheaper place to shop. I'd say this is about right. Prices for groceries up here are crazy expensive. I tend to go grocery shopping for meat on days where my local grocery store marks whatever is left because it's a day away from expiration. Wrap up portions and put in the freezer. Lasts a while. I also don't make my meals as big as I once did. Enough for a day of leftovers.
If mushrooms are naughty haha. That tends to be what's in the paper bags.

yes, I had one cat that was pretty picky... Fancy Feast wasn't that bad compared to other brands in the pet stores. But in the end, my other cat had kidney failure and it was all I could do to get him to eat. I'd buy anything. I think he just gave up because his failure wasn't as advanced as others who lived longer.
Load More Replies...Depends on where in Ontario you shop too. Rural Northern Ontario is way more expensive than anywhere that they have a Walmart within 50-100 km. The farther north you go the more it costs, never mind the cost in the territories. I’d assume Alaska is just as bad, too.
Most of this grocery budget went to the pet supplies. That jug of cat litter was probably $20-25 and fancy feast isn't the cheapest cat food either.
This Is Just Shy Of $180 Of Groceries In NY As Of Last Night
Yes. The price difference really adds up. Living in NY, Aldi has been a real life saver.
Load More Replies...You can’t even see all of it, there’s no way to tell how much there is or where it’s from.
Eggs and bananas in the same bag with (and under!) onions, potatoes and cans? How do they survive the trip home?
I'm assuming that's a pint of blueberries it's $5 not on sale at the stop & shop I work at in Massachusetts.
I first read that as $80 and was like, "ok that's cool" and then I saw that it's actually $180 and realized that we are deep in a dystopian nightmare.
£20 (~$25) Of Groceries In London, UK
It’s from Tesco though, more expensive than Aldi
Load More Replies...There are 21 items. Approximately you’ll pay less than £1 for each item. That’s unbelievable.
You have chicken and three other packages of meat. That alone would be $20 here lol
$500 Groceries USA
I'm in the US and yes, prices are going up, but no way that was $500. At least not yet.
Looks like a trip to Costco or some other bulk warehouse store.
Load More Replies...No it isn't!! That is all from Aldi! Look at the laels. And they got the Lamb 50% off!! That is $100-150 tops!
There is no way that is $500.00 worth of food when all of the labels show the groceries come from Aldi. We have had our basket completely full multiple time and have never gotten even spent $200.00 at Aldi.
To those not believing this high price, I also see gluten-free items in here, so if this is an all gluten-free shopping trip, I don't doubt it one bit... $5-6 for bread, $3 for a box of mac and cheese, etc. they add up...
$500 equals to R8373,18 in South Africa, for R8373.18 we can buy groceries for 2 months for a family of 4.
I don't believe it. My full size grocery cart was 3/4 full and it was only $175
Ours gets stuffed full at times and it's only 150 tops

Depends on where you live. Salmon is common where I live so it's fairly inexpensive. And I live where shipping is easy for delivery. Where are you located? That can make a difference in the prices.
Load More Replies...Salmon and all-natural chicken. Considering how expensive both are where I live (Above $20 for the salmon and around $10 - $15 for all natural chicken) I'd say $64 seems very reasonable!
Look into wild fork. It is always cheaper for us and it's shipped to the house. It's not a meal plan. You order what you want.

This is why I clip massive amounts of coupons, save receipts for rebates, and join the discount “club” for every store I shop in. The night before grocery shopping day, I am at my computer scanning websites for groceries and rebates, and looking at online store circulars for specials. I can tailor the grocery list to reflect not only what we need now, but also what’s on special now that we will need later. Invest in a separate freezer if you can, folks. If you’re in an apartment, there are small freezers available. They’re a tad bigger than dorm fridges, and don’t take up a load of space. Best investment my husband and I ever made.
damn, I'm all for buying generic when it's necessary... but I'll never skimp on the TP!!! I'll go without food for good TP.
keep expecting to spot a bottle of JD , but alas you are just getting robbed like hell just to eat , Russia is cutting off grain supplies that go all around the world , so expect even more price rises
I observe that you missed the bananas in the picture and I'd dearly like to know how you expect the yogurt to have come in its own skin. ;) Having a bit of good natured fun with ya on this. But yes, many things must be purchased boxed or canned, especially when one is poor.

we used to fill 'em as high as we could get 'em - $12 - 1959. edit for incorrect year. 1959 is correct.
In 1955 my grocery budget was $1 per person a day or $21 a week. for 3. I would fill my cart with fresh eggs, vegs & fruit, 2# hamburger + 2# chuck steak or chicken. I had many ways to fix them. For a while I even baked my own bread, I always baked cookies + I worked part time.
Load More Replies...Remember, most shopping carts are way bigger and deeper than they used to be, and also have room under the basket for big items, like packages of paper towels, etc. So this cart may have a lot more in it than just the stuff we can see here. I’m in Maryland, and my weekly shopping for my husband and I comes to about $140/week, and we’re not starving at all. I use the hell out of coupons and rebates, and will look really closely at store circulars (which are available online, btw) for specials. Oh, and a part of that $140 can also be me stocking up on meat and anything than can freeze when it’s on a great special, because we also have a very reliable vacuum sealer (the one with reusable bags) and a freezer chest to store it all in. It doesn’t happen overnight, however. Takes a lot of research, planning, time, and practice, but you can eventually become a good thrifty shopper, with a freezer full of extra food.
Likewise, I spend just a little less than that for my husband and me. We're in Seattle and don't have a lot of coupons available but I always scan the online store circulars and shop accordingly and judiciously at our local supermarket, TJ's and our slightly upscale market, part of a local chain. TrJ's pricing alw'says looks attractive but mushrooms if you break it down by lb. is about $2 more/lb. Their pre-packaged salads are slightly cheaper (and fresher looking) than the local market's. I don't buy a lot of veg at TJ's because I sometimes need only one zucchini or one lemon and not larger packages. I buy beans and spices in bulk and large cuts of braising pork/beef (when they go on sale), cook and then freeze meal sized portions.
Load More Replies...Probably more. Cereals at grocery stores have gotten insanely expensive.
Load More Replies...New Yorker here, the other day at the supermarket four ears of corn was five dollars and cherries were on "sale" for "only" ten dollars a pound.
Get your cereal at Costco. It's dirt cheap compared to grocery stores. My husband just bought a 3 lb. box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch for $7 - $8 (less than $6 while on sale).
$165 in the 70s and 80s meant about THREE full shopping carts for a family of eight (mom, dad, six kids, no pets)!

Frozen broccoli is a dollar and some change here.

Who cares if they bought bread, wine, pop and ramen? It makes sense to post something like this (Which is typical for people to buy, far more normal than all of the luxury food pictures) which shows what prices in their area are like. I'd rather know what top ramen and pop costs than crab, lobster, or some specialty cut of meat.
Not groceries. Alcohol 60% , then sugar soda, carbs and prepared hummus.
Probably still cheaper than healthy food, though. If you're broke enough, calories are calories.

It is cheaper to buy a whole chicken most of the time. Just have to learn to piece it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCMPTvty5nQ or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTNEjPOixKY
This is actually cheap, in Croatia chicken boneless breasts are around 6$, and on the seaside are 12$ (I heard it on the news, some men complained)

They may be a hunter, which they may consider as part of their groceries. In parts of the USA (where it's legal, that is) a lot of people will hunt deer or turkey or whatever as a way if supplementing their groceries. As expensive as ammo is here (hence the posted price) it's still much cheaper to hunt your food rather than buy it.

How can people even afford to own/shoot guns if bullets cost that much?? Guns don’t kill, people do can go right out the window. You gotta really want to use a gun in order to spend money like that. So it’s both - the person buying and the special item they want to buy for their purpose. Which is why we need stricter controls for both.
Is it just me or are the groceries in the USA insanely priced?? I get the palps doing my groceries at the Aldi here in France but the prices I see in USD are insane. How the hell can you afford to cook a decent meal with these prices. Maaaan. The prices here have gone up for sure but this is crazy. EDIT: I am also shocked at the high prices in Aussie too!
Most of these are exaggerated or very expensive items that the average person wouldn't buy on a regular basis. The one from Missouri looks relatively normal (in comparison to prices in my area) and could feed a family of four for more than a week.
Load More Replies...I live in Indianapolis, Indiana USA and there are two adults in my home. Once a month, I shop the sale at my local butcher and spend about $85. I shop weekly between Aldi and a local Pakistani grocery for grocery staples and fresh produce and spend about $40 per week. I stock up on paper products at a warehouse store about every six months for around $100. My average weekly spending on groceries is $60. That gets us seven dinners, lunches for work, breakfast for the weekends, and most of the time our meat supply lasts us more than a month. BUT, I am a careful shopper, I shop with coupons, shop the sales, and plan out meals according to the sales. We dine out about twice per month. Prior to the pandemic, we were paying about $40 per week on average. I am not sure how a family with children can make it with grocery prices skyrocketing the way they are.

I even do a fancy ramen with the boiled egg and fresh veg to mix in. Let's try to help each other through this.
Load More Replies...Where are these people shopping? You have Aldi in USA, right? A whole free range corn fed chicken cost £6.50 and we make 3 dinners out of that. Whoever is paying 15 dollars for 2 chicken fillets needs their head examined.
I want to know where Aldi is cheaper. Around here (New England) Aldi is not just more expensive, the quality is often poor. Yet, I hear folks praising Aldi elsewhere. Why are we cheated?
Load More Replies...I'm not sure this tells us anything. The price for food depends heavily on location, where you shop and what you purchase. Shop at Whole Foods and end up paying major money for less. Shop at a more budget friendly store, get the same items and pay half as much. Where you live also affects prices. Produce tends to be cheaper in California. Meat tends to be cheaper in the mid-west, etc. Outside the US, I discovered that many foods are much more expensive than here (even now) and less available, but this changes, I'm sure, as the world changes. I'd like to see a comparison of what $100(US) gets you in different areas of the country and then see what the same amount gets you in some other countries in Europe or Asia. Of-course, this would need to be similar foods to show realistic price differences.
I must be conditioned to just think these are normal prices for things. None of them seemed too bad, except for the obviously ridiculous. You can tell geography plays a major role in prices, as well as getting meat products. Getting the vegetables\ fruit are great, but there is no way I would use that before it spoiled. Some people might, but not me. So that is money down the drain.
The comparisons are pretty much meaningless when none of them contain the same foods. A better comparison would set up an identical shopping list and see what the different totals were.
How is this a useful article. It's only a comparison if everyone is trying to buy the same stuff and then you can see how far the money goes. If everyone is buying something different it tells you nothing.
