Phrases to make essay longer
Title here should be "How to make your essay such a tedious bore that no one can be bothered with it". I've tossed many potentially informative articles because of this counter-productive practice. Oh, er, should I add a few hundred unecessary words here to 'fill my quota'? LOL
Collective nouns
Basic grammar rules
I have had 2 teachers who speak Spanish as their first language. One of them repeatedly remind some of my classmates that if we thought learning Spanish was hard, imagine trying to re-learn English. Consider: go, went; goad has an entirely different meaning; am, was; the word "they" is gender-neutral; run, ran; its v. it's, there, they're, and their; the list goes on.
Except if your Sam Smith, where grammar goes out the window. They are singular, you know.
Why did 'I' and 'YOU' get its own box on the left, instead of just adding 'I' to the bottom? Sorry, that's distracting, especially when they are reordered on the right.
I think it's because of single/plural. I, You, He, She, It are single, while We, You, They are plural.

why do all of these look like things you'd see on a wall in a classroom
I just need someone to show me when to use a semi-colon vs a hyphen lol
i found the first answer on this website to be helpful https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/114/should-i-use-a-semicolon-or-a-dash-to-connect-two-closely-related-sentences

Surprised I didn't see past participle in this post. Commonly butchered in speech/writing
Hooray for this post! I was seriously starting to think that grammar was dead based on tinternet posts from the past decade or two. I actually read a published novel a while ago where the author's characters 'were sat', 'were stood', etc. Mind boggling.
i believe that used to be proper grammar, or it may have been a stylistic choice? (i've heard some English people say "were sat" so i don't know for sure)

There are all kinds of writing sites out there that list these phrases as obvious and just plain gobbledygook. If you can't find a way to make it longer, you haven't used all of your research, opinions, or descriptive powers.
making an essay longer should not be a valid aim for students. it should not be encouraged by instructers. maybe there was a time saying simple things with more words looked better somehow but this is not the case any longer. in fact it's the opposite, academic articles, for example need to be much shorter due to the quantity of journals and writers as well as the increasing similarity between all online sources.
