More often than not we read about toxic workplaces where bosses micromanage, pressure and manipulate their employees. Where they don’t give them well deserved paid time off, or where they refuse a salary raise.
But the truth is, there are still many devoted and passionate bosses out there who are true leaders and stand for the people. And this post is a celebration of exactly that.
Below is a collection of pictures that show the moment people realized their boss is so much more than their formal superior. Scroll down, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your best boss stories in the comment below!

Manager Helps His Employee Get A Raise
I'm a general manager, and our new President wiped out all raises I gave to our fantastic employees. Last year, during these challenging Covid and financial times, my division came in under budget, so I gave EVERYONE at least 7 to 10% increases; they deserved it. Then came my review; it was the lowest I have ever had; I wonder why? They don't know it, but I am so out of there.
Wow, I want to work for you. My previous boss was denying me a 5% increase for 3 years, even though that's what we discussed before. Long story short, new employer and a significant raise.
Ok get this, if you value your employees, right? Then you wont have to complain when they move on to other jobs because they are better off elsewhere. You know what else is crazy? If your employees aren't stressing about feeding themselves or are overworked, their productivity actually goes up. This is why I always laugh when older people start talking about getting an entry position and working your way up blah, blah. That only works if your employers see you as a valued asset and not basically an antagonistic force they need to exploit. And that just isnt how most of the world works right now. Yeah theyre happy to pile on more responsibility on you, but they're gonna do everything they can to resist paying you a cent more and will gaslight you by telling you youre actually worthless so you accept that. Ironically, employers actually need employees more than the other way around pretty much even at the lowest levels of work.
wow. some of ya'll really get into this. [i'm old and done so it doesn't matter to me.] sorry we left you such a f'd up world. it was not all my fault.

A True Angel Indeed
I was in college and had to take my kid and young neice to class with me one day. My professor noticed that I kept staring out the window, and walking out every 15 minutes to check on them. So he asked me what's going on. I told him my kids are in the car. He said bring them in. He was so caring and patient with them. Forever grateful to Dr. Rotarius.
My Sister's Boss Passed Away Several Months Ago, But Before She Did, She Arranged To Have This Sent To Her Staff
OMG, I'm crying. Most people are really incredible when you get to know them.
This was my nurse manager! She was hilarious, irreverent, fair and treated everyone with dignity and respect! She was a huge advocate for our patients in a psychiatric ICU. I was lucky enough to work with her for 4 years and she is sorely missed! Hugs and love to her grandson whom she loved so dearly!
Please tell me she was reincarnated into the flowers and they have been seeded and turned to happy sprouts somewheres.
“A good boss today looks different than 50 years ago,” Christine Mitterbauer, a licensed and ICF-approved career coach and serial entrepreneur based in the UK, told Bored Panda. “Today, some of the skills that are most highly valued in bosses are communication skills, coaching and mentoring skills and relationship-building skills,” she explained.
This Wholesome Manager
Yeah, half the reason homeless people cant get out of a rut so many times is the system itself that hates them for being homeless, but ironically prevents them from leaving the lifestyle. Like ironically most welfare systems want people to get a job, but are set up to actively discourage people from working at the same time. Say you want to work, but you get $1000 in welfare. You start working and earn $1100. You now get no welfare. Also you might spend $200 on stuff like commuting and work clothes, and you have less time to watch your kids, so daycare costs. Well in that case even if you want to work, not working is actually the smarter financial decision. And thats how people who WANT to work, are forced to sit on welfare.
I was denied assistance because my annual income from fulltime and part time job combined was too much by $40.00. But if I hadn't had two jobs I couldn't even come close to making ends meet. I kept both jobs and continue to do so for sever more years after. Edit: This experience doesn't make me bitter against people who accept assistance. Some time you just need a hand and you are able to get up and running again in no time.
Load More Replies...I've been homeless and lived in my car for 7 months. I managed to get a job, but it was very difficult: you can't get a job without an address, and you can't get a home without a job. I used an old address until I had enough saved to get a place. Two days after I moved in, I was fired for lying about my housing - some mail they (employer) sent got returned...
In L A there are over 40,000 homeless who are working full time, but due to inflation, gas at $6 a gallon, and rent increases are unable to have a home to go to at the end of their shift.... in the USA in 2022.

According to Mitterbauer, a great boss puts the team and the goals of the company before themselves. “Whereas earlier, a good boss would tell their employees what to do, today, they should empower their employees to do the job themselves. A good boss also realizes she/he is often not the smartest person in the room, and knows how to bring out the very best in her/his employees.”
The career coach explained that some people naturally have the skills mentioned above, and they will therefore be naturally good leaders without much specific leadership training. “But most people would benefit from training, ideally including on-the-job training,” she added.

I wish everyone wore these. I'm a lip reader also and with mask wearing I can't hear anything anyone says. It's a huge letdown.
when the pandemic first came out and I had to go see Dr. Sig with my tortoise it hadn't occurred to me but he's very hard of hearing - had a heckuva time with masks... no one had thought of these at the time but it would have been very helpful .... I whipped out my pen & used a paper towel (who carries paper anymore?) - he's still the best pet-vet around

It doesn't even take 15 mins to perform zuhr. Also whose stopping the other employees from asking for an additional 15 mins? I am sure if the boss has been so accommodating to this person, they would have accommodated everyone else as well but no, let's just write nasty comments like 'keep your religion home' when non Christian religious practices are being accommodated for once. Interestingly, the same country that forces kids to pledge allegiance to a flag which is the secular form of religion and die in its defense sees no problem with sitting in judgement on what Muslims can and cannot do.

“Communication, coaching and relationship-building skills are all skills that can be taught if you have the right mindset and take the lessons and insights onboard. Because the head veterinarian is a wonderful gay man who is accepting of anyone and everyone as long as they aren't a total a$$hole. This wonderful man exudes inclusivity and positivity and is always teaching anyone who will listen; new skills to be better at their job in the veterinary world. I still take my pets and service dog to him 15 years later and he still gives me employee discounts. Just don't ride in a car with him, he's only got one eye and drives like a bat out of hell /J. Still love him with everything I have, though
Employees want to feel listened to and respected, so a good boss will honor this and show, over time, that they value the input and work from the employee, Mitterbauer said. She argues that “it feels genuine, this process takes time, as there have to be several instances of feeling listened to and respected.”
“Giving regular constructive feedback to the employee is important, as is spending time training and simply listening to the employee on a regular basis,” the career coach concluded.

That is wonderful! Caring for a loved one at home, is extremely expensive. Unless you can hire someone who will do it daily, and then allow you to take care of the rest of the time, it’s very hard. My sisters and I did it wit both parents, and we found an amazing young woman named Sonja. She worked with my mom for 8 weeks, until she passed. We did the rest of the time. She was 8-4 pm. We loved her for loving my mother. When my dad was dying, she wasn’t available, and we had to pay an agency. Wow. As a one time nurse, I know what I was paid, and I can just imagine what families were charged. We had to have aids, 24/7 for a month or two. Luckily my dad had the money, it was over 100k for that time period. They were great to help!

It sucks that we have to rely on individual good bosses to do something about customers that sexually harass staff tho
I worked hardware store. My boss was fine, but I never met the store manager. It also had various assistant store managers. Sadly they had to cut hours massively and as new hire I would be impacted severely. Well around end of my shift, I get called to director office. Goes on telling me about hour cuts, but also that another store was looking for a full-time, he only had good words about me from basically everyone. Next day, during work hours, an assistant-director drove me to a sudden interview with the dept manager over there. Was just a formality and got hired. It pissed my boss to see me go. Sadly the dept manager was an hypocrite and terrible leader. Applied to a different store that was looking. Eventually got a call that i could not be hired because HQ would be closing that store definitively. Same day got a call from previous job telling me they were working hard to get me back... but it dragged on. Later learned the store manager got replaced and that one cut hours even more.
So the job they were planning for me got trashed. Got tired of my manager and the ridiculous workload we had. Applied to a grocery store next to my old job. Got the job, closer to home, better pay, and a great boss as a bonus. So I go say hello there now and then. I could get my old job back (which I've only had for 3 months) any time now that the full-time left... but I got a great boss, no hassle, and better pay :| my old boss told me "Stay there. This place wouldn't pay you rightfully."

Just thought the truth needed to be told (or at the very least some context given), as this tweet seems to pop up on every "cool boss" article on BP.

I Work Construction In The Midwest And My Boss Just Delivered All Of These Food Goodies To Our Home In Time For The Holiday
Nothing makes employees and/or volunteers feel extra good about themselves than just being recognized for a job well done. A bonus on top of bonus for his boss getting personal gifts instead of something pathetic, like a coupon. This boss sounds like he knows just how to keep his employees happy
this reminds me of one of my favorite gifts from a former boss (really, he was like my cool Colombian uncle and I love him) -- it was the week before Thanksgiving, and he said he got me a "turkey sandwich". Cut to him giving me, in two minute increments, the following: a whole 15 pound turkey, three loves of artisan bread, gravy, potatoes, three cans of vegetables, two cans of cranberry sauce, and two pies.
What is really sad, is Nurses week. Think, tote bags, pens, a carnation, a coupon for a free meal at the cafeteria… yeah, that knocks it home that you appreciate your nurses! I was really shocked. Decided then, health care was being treated like a business, and they just wanted warm bodies. Sad but true. Still loved nursing, but when they passed that stupid c**p out, I left it on the counter and never picked it back up. Not worth my time or self worth as a nurse. Was a nurse for 35 years.
My Boyfriend Is Going Through Chemo For 6 Months And Has Surgery Coming Up. This Morning This Was Left On My Desk By My Boss
My boss loves stones of all kinds and we have talked about our love of labradorite. She had mentioned red labradorite which I had never heard of. The ring is red labradorite and the card says, "I think about you at times and what you are going through and I know how tough life can be. You are always positive and there for the clients, your peers, and even me. Here is something I wanted to give you. As I said, jewelry is my thing and this is a red labradorite. I love it and hope you do too. Please take care of yourself and know I am here for you as is the team. Have a blessed day!"
I've never heard of that stone before, so I googled it and found this: The gem is incredibly rare and I have seen some gem traders trying to sell Red Labradorite for over $1000 per carat, placing it amongst the most expensive red gemstones on the planet.
wow, looking at that ring, that's gotta be minimum 2-3 carats, no?
Load More Replies...I saw the "incredibly rare, $1000" comment when I googled too, but I think there's something wrong with that source- you can find red labradorite for 200 or less right now. Labradorite (sometimes called andesine) is in the feldspar family (like moonstones) and is lovely, but not rare like emeralds, etc. A source I found says that right now, red ones are known to be diffusion treated with copy to improve red tone. (https://www.gemselect.com/other-info/andesine-mystery.php). This is just to clear up the 'price' question- the gift and the card itself are super thoughtful, regardless of how much it cost.
You pay for size, clarity, cut, setting and the manufacturer. A stone equal in name does not have to be equal in price
Load More Replies...Red labradorite is copper-diffused andesine, another feldspar. Closely related but slightly different proportions of constituent elements. Glad to hear this. When I was going thru hell, I mean, chemotherapy, I was fired from my... wait for it... volunteer job!!!
Beautiful. I have many labradorite sets of jewelry, including fire labradorite but I'd never heard of or seen the red variety. I guess I know why now - it's way outside my price range! 🤣 What a lovely gesture from the boss.

Today one of my (best!) people was struggling and finally asked me for help because things were building up too fast. I think they expected me to be angry about it as well. WTF?? Of course I'm here to help! Why can't we all just treat people like we want to be treated ourselves? No one may read this, but... My husband of 33 years fell down a flight of concrete stairs and died on Monday, February 14, 2022; it was Valentine's Day. Four days later, on Friday, I was asked when I was coming back to work. I showed up the following Monday. I just cried and did my job. I didn't realize that they wouldn't cremate him right away when they finally did cremate him. They did it on my birthday. I never thought to ask for a date of when that would occur. Now, this week I had my review. They said that the amount of work I usually produced had declined recently. They reduced the raise I expected and then dangled a 2% increase if I managed my staff more efficiently and bartered more with our vendors. Mind you, I always came under budget. Before posting here, I wrote my letter of resignation and I'm giving it to them tomorrow.

My hair has been cobalt blue for the last 3 years.

As I fellow tomato hater, this is gold :) I too would rather eat an entire raw onion than even a morsel of tomato!

Good bosses are out there. Companies that care
Everyone fails every now and then. That is how we learn: Failling is not bad, however you can handle it in good or bad ways. If you never fail, you were not challedged enough, will propably be bored like hell, and won't grow as a person as a result. What is important is how you failures are handled, and getting the ballance just right between the numbers of successes and failures.

Manager's Last Day At Work. Another Manager Doesn't Want Them To Leave
Had To Work On Christmas Eve But These Adorable Cookies Made By My Old Boss Made It Worth It
One blessing at work is I get to decide if staff gets extra time off. I give my incredible staff all day Good Friday, all day Christmas eve (and sometimes a half-day off before Christmas eve), New Year Eve, their birthday, plus a floating holiday of their choice. And I like it when a holiday falls in the middle of the week, because I'll give them the day or days before or after off. My new President doesn't really appreciate it though. My days are numbered there.
On behalf of all your staff, thank you for being a good boss!
Load More Replies...well, I work Christmas too and I don't see the issue. Not everyone on the planet is Christian, I work for a global company in global financial markets and Asia does not care if we celebrate Christmas, just like we do not care for their holidays - so we are open. I get other days off instead which to me has as lot more value than sitting home (I am an Atheist with a small family so we do not celebrate anyways)
The mentality of everything must be open all the time is crazy! It comes with large human cost and in most cases we will still survive just fine -at least those that are able to plan just a little bit ahead, and the rest need an emportant lesson about what happens when you structure your life badly. In fact I like the slowing down that usually happens during christmas where I live, so you can have just a moment of rest. Only essential "businesses" should reamin running on hollidays. That is hospitals, fire departments, water, gas and electricity etc. ... and no, a clothing store, fast food restaurant or similar shops does not fit into that category, despite the managers trying to convince the employess of something else. Hollidays should be spend with family, not on earning money for someone else to profit from, and they should not be able to buy your precious time with loved ones with something as cheep as a cookie.

the sad thing is that the immediate managers probably don't make THAT much more and need to pay out of their pocket, while the big bosses get a spending budget but don't use it - or on stuff for themselves (again, not all of them, but I see it in my company. Bosses get 500.- a month for expenses which they do not have as they don't travel/go for lunches and they could easily invite the team for a few drinks but nope, not happening)

After so many posts about horrible bosses, it's nice to be reminded that good people exist. I once had a boss lend me a company vehicle for a few months because I was fighting with my car insurance company over a claim and couldn't afford a new car. He also paid for tires on my coworker's car when she couldn't afford them. Good bosses are rare, but wonderful.
Just what I was going to say! Very nice to see after so many negative posts about bosses.

At the start of the first lockdown, a colleague got a ticket for one of the last flights to Australia to join her wife who had been visiting family there then couldn't leave (because lockdown). Our mutual manager drove her three hours to the airport for a 3am flight, then did the same the next day when she couldn't board her flight because Australian immigration had messed up her visa paperwork. The team will forgive him pretty much anything after that.
Companies are only as good as their people. My first boss was my mentor and taught me more about business than any college could. I had an amazing career because of his insights and teachings and I still use his examples today, even though I retired years ago. His best was the three fairs. A company needs to be fair to it's customers, a company needs to be fair with it's employees and the employees need to be fair to the company. If you can achieve those goals, your company will do fine.

Mine refuses to not pay my breaks. He pays my breaks and even schedules incentives when I feel like we need one! I believe he is like that bc I do good work and don’t take advantage of these privileges?!
I had the same boss for 20 years. We worked side by side, and she encouraged me and the other employees to keep bettering ourselves. She would adjust our schedules if we were in school so we wouldn’t miss classes, and still let us work while receiving qualifications for certain positions. She would close our facility every year, for 2 days, in addition to regular holidays, for staff retreat. Hourly employees worked half day on a Wednesday and have Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Hourly staff enjoyed the paid time off; she would reward the salaried administrative staff (we worked REALLY hard) with little working trips such as Las Vegas or 3 day cruises during those off days. Good times!
I was working as a chef in Spain and accrued holiday time so my boss told me I had to take the time off because he didn't want to pay me the 'double bubble'. I decided to drive down to the south for a break and was asking around where to rent a decent car to make the trip. Boss told me to come to his place the next day and gave me the keys to his Mercedes-Benz. Miss you Kuno.
