There have been a lot of talks and discussions about how different generations are and how that affects them understanding each other and getting along. Having this in mind, Reddit user @Prolificvisions decided to ask: “Gen Z, what are some trends, ideologies, social things, etc. that millennials did that you're not going to continue?” The question that got 12.4k upvotes got generation Z naming things that they find weird and annoying, such as not having any privacy or choosing a stable job that they don’t like instead of going for their dream. They also named some of the rather funny answers such as getting rid of the fashion of “weird-a** eyebrows.”
If you are Gen Z, what things would you say “bye” to? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

Identity politics. F**king hate it. I don't give a s**t what your skin color is, what your genitals are, or which genitals you want to f**k. I'm just gonna treat you like a person.
Dependance on social media. When you take a step back and realize how ridiculous its gotten.
I'm hoping to God that this whole 'getting offended on other people's behalf' is not something you guys are continuing.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. You don't get offended on other peoples behalf. You stand up for what is right because it is right.
Saying "gay" to mean stupid/dumb
This. Even in a very progressive city in California, it was extremely normal to hear growing up in the 90s and I'm ashamed at how long it took me to understand how ignorant and hateful it is. Now I have a visceral reaction when my older siblings say it, and I try to encourage better ways of expressing themselves when I hear it!
Collecting user data for advertising purposes.
They can't use the data that you do not provide. Make it your second nature on social media to lie just about anything and be a pregnant 72 year old female lumberjack working in the Sahara while living in Washington DC with a awfully long daily commute and a craving for pickled herring with pineapple pizza and Budweiser beer.
impact font memes and saying "only 90's kids remember this" are high on the list
I've never understood the hatred for a particular font. People hate comic sans like it's written in the blood of infants. WTF is that?
Looking at generations differently.
No ones gives a damn f--k about which generation you belong, just be nice.
Work for money, not for passion.
I know it’s depressing but recently a lot of younger millennials were talking about how they want to do something they like. My coach is getting a PhD in history, My economics teacher is going to Law School because she doesn’t make enough etc. and I just can’t think of a reason to justify that much debt. Basically they’re putting themselves in tons of debt to make enough money in something they enjoy. I can’t see a reason to justify it enough. I just want to find a field I’m GOOD at and don’t hate.
cancel culture
WTF do you think this entire article is about?! Canceling others and their habits.
Not letting the kids have opinion
Or not letting kids get involved with 'adult' things even when it effects them too. (thanks mum)
I say this as a "millennial" (though must point out the lines between the two are blurred aren't they?) -
Facebook
I have friends also in their early 30s who had kids young. In high school now, teenagers. NONE of that age group use Facebook. It's an "old person's thing" to them. Though being 12/13 it is invariably described as "gay", but you get my point.
As someone who works in the music industry, we plough literally millions (collectively) into Facebook ads each year. But within the next few years it will no longer be our primary social media target.
Which is a shame, because as one of the first and most established social media platforms, it has great advertising tools.
An organic lifestyle seems expensive and kind of dumb. Organic life style meaning buying food that is significantly more expensive but has an organic label on it.
if you don't want chemicals in your food don't eat food because everything is made of chemicals when you really think about it
Is this a joke? Or the dumbest thing one can say. POisons are made of chemicals, and so is broccoli. There's a big difference in how they affect the body when consumed. Watch what they spray on broccoli to kill pests, read what those sprays are made of, what they do, and you'll know why you must NOT get that inside you.
Load More Replies...Organic food is a con designed to capitalise on people's fear of "chemicals" and their uninformed environmentalism. The alternative to irresponsible non-organic farming is not organic farming. It is responsible farming.
There are plenty of people who understand that organic food might not be necessarily healthier for themselves, but it's is usually much better for the environment (no monoculture, loosing some crops to keep insects alive,...) but especially for the people working with it. Easiest example for that are bananas: absolutely identical on the inside, but massively toxic for the farmers if not organic..
Organic is not completely better for the environment. There have been some studies on it and it's actually quite complicated. There are instances where it is better, where it's no better and where it's worse: https://geneticliteracyproject.org/2021/07/09/organic-vs-conventional-farming-lower-environmental-impact/
Load More Replies...This. It is sad how most eco brands abuse their prices. Being green is nowadays only for the privileged. I would never be able to afford buying in bio supermarkets. I try to eat bio meat eggs and milk; but i will never afford the rest of products just because they make them overpriced. I tried to buy a deodorant with a cardboard package and they were 9 euros the piece!
Actually, the pesticides used in mainstream farming might have significant drawbacks, but so do some of the organic pesticides used in organic farming. The other option is to grow produce without pesticides, weed aggressively, and put a positive spin on the insects (protein bonuses).
So much this. A lot of people think that organic means that there are no pesticides involved in growing it, when in fact there certainly is. It's just that the pesticides have to be naturally occuring, some of which, like copper-sulfate, Rotenone, and nicotine are all approved for organic farming, but are highly toxic in just small amounts.
Load More Replies...I always found the organic craze stupid. I also happened to have a garden, as did my grandpa. Did our veggies and fruits taste better? Yes. Only because we picked them right when they were ripe, not early so they could be shipped. Waste of money for a $5 tomato!
You do realize that everyone in impoverished India eats organic food, right?
I think the real line is between mass produced or home grown. I prefer to plant stuff in my home garden...still GMO seeds but I can control the use of pesticides etc.
I eat some organic food because of the environment not for health or 'lifestyle reasons. Pesticides get into water system & kill fish & other wildlife. Intensively farmed meat is blanket treated with lots of antibiotics as a preventative to illness caused by their cramped living conditions (chickens literally knee deep in their own poo), this is causing antibiotic-resistant superbugs like MRSA. I don't only eat organic as I'm not rich but some veg isn't that much more expensive (like carrots in the UK) and I enjoy growing some tomatoes on my balcony.
I eat some organic food because I care about the environment not because of a lifestyle. Intensively farmed meat is pumped full of antibiotics as a preventative to them getting ill from their cramped living conditions (chickens sat literally knee deep in their own poo for their whole lives). Also pesticide over-use means they get into the water system & damage eco-system killing fish & other wildlife. Obviously I still eat plenty of non-organic stuff as I'm not rich but things that are not much more expensive like carrots (in UK at least) and growing some tomatoes on my balcony is do-able. Meat is much more expensive granted so I only eat it occasionally now but it does mean it is a real treat that I really enjoy.
But have you ever tasted organic food? Far superior . . . However I can't afford most of it.
"Organic" is just a marketing gimmick, albeit one a lot of gullible people have fallen for. "Organic" produce is no healthier or more nutritious than produce grown the standard way.
I think self deprivation humor is dying and I think millennials started it.
Like it’s seriously getting old when people say they are depressed as a joke.
self deprivation? I mean, I suck and all, but pretty sure deprecation was the word we're looking for. What do I know, I just work here...
Being nerdy will no longer be a negative aspect
It never was, they just got bullied by idiots who where too stupid to study so they called skilled people nerds like it was a negative thing.
Thinking the world is going to end at the turn of a new generation
Every generation was sure that the next generation would destroy the world. Now we're at the point that we know that the next generation will have to deal with what we are destroying right now. And our world leaders do not care about the generations to come.
The Skrillex cut I’m hoping it will be seen as the mullet 2.0 that it is before too long.
Make fun of kids that play fortnite, like seriously just let kids have fun
I don't make fun of those who play it, I just make fun of the actual game because it really is awful.
Making fun of the teenagers of the nest generation and gatekeeping mental illnesses
Getting a degree in art history and wondering why I’m not employed
We will soon live in a colorless world void of the things that make life worth living, because it isn't something that can pay. I find that utterly sad.
Born in '98, so I don't know which side of the debate I'm on (personally, I think millenial = pre-2000, so I think I'm a millenial).
Cable television. I really think making TV for streaming services is where we should end up.
I'm a millenial but my cousin is Gen Z and when we hang out she refuses to watch Star Trek. So based on a sample size of one, Gen Z is going to kill the Star Trek franchise.
Nothing will kill Star Trek. Its impact can't be underestimated, especially the way in which it used fictional storytelling to comment on social issues.
Early 2000 fashion, hot dog that was bad. I want anyone who contributed to that to cry over their mistakes.
Not knowing how to invest and losing like 10% of your wealth every year.
Based on the surveys I've seen, Gen Z apparently thinks millennials are complaining about nothing in regard to the economy. Benefit of not graduating right as the economy crashed, I guess. See a lot of them refusing to vote, too.
this is what I get for not updating my data. 30% of eligible Gen Z voters turned out for the 2018 midterms, which is far better than I expected. My bad.
Being social
Don't see why being social should be discontinued. People are a social species who can suffer from loneliness. If you want a society where dead people behind closed doors become the norm, you should definitely ban being social.
Almost none of these are things that Millennials actually started. History goes back more than 20 years, folks
I only got to No.14 before I couldn't take the stupidity of this list anymore. I think it was put together by people who weren't born before millennial times so have no idea that most of these things were all ready happening in the 80s or earlier - so before millennials were even born. And the one that says "Assign stereotypes to people born in certain years", when this whole post is just that. :-D
Load More Replies...Half of these weren’t started by millennials, like smoking? How is that millennials fault
It's Millenials fault that they didn't put a complete stop to it, obviously /s
Load More Replies...im so confused by a lot of these? like wearing a scarf all year round??? seriously who cares??? do what makes you happy and feel good
They have that and eyebrows then turn around and say stop judging people that were born in a different time than you. SMH.
Load More Replies...Uhhhh....as a GenX, 90% of these aren't Millennial things. Some aren't even GenX, some May even be older than Boomers.
Maybe we could get away from the whole imaginary "Gen Whatever" nonsense and start focusing on real things like, y'know, why Libras hate Leos and those awful people with RH-negative blood types.
As someone with AB-, I can confirm that we are awful. I procreate with a positive blood type so I've done my part to end my negative lineage
Load More Replies...Veganism being treated like a religion and a cult. I don't care what you eat just leave me alone.
Nobody has ever bothered you. And it’s okay for someone to explain why your position is wrong. That has nothing to do with worshipping anyone like in a cult, you’re just dumb as fûck and probably can’t sort out your guilt in an intellectual way.
Load More Replies...That's just as bad a generalisation as this whole post. Can we just accept that every generation makes its share of mistakes and has a fair share of stupid people? Many of whom contributed ideas to this post.
Load More Replies...As others have mentioned, I don't feel like those who created/contributed to this list understood the assignment. Almost none of these were 'Millennial trends', and many are REALLY old habits/behaviors/memes, like smoking. Also, a lot are really petty, personal style things, and others are things which are already NOT trends. I worry for the future sometimes.
Sure we have a lot of debt but at least we got educated enough in history to know that most of the items here date back to oh, the dawn of human existence? lol
I thought y'all were big on 'let people do what they want as long as it makes them happy and not hurting other peopl'. What is this then haha
Influencers who do nothing but take pictures of themselves and expect everything for nothing.
Better than being a literal child. Nothing is cornier than that.
