Women Are Sharing Stories About Men Who Acted Superior When It Came To Their Geeky Interests (23 Tweets)
Video games are for everyone. And everyone plays them, no matter their gender or background. Because video games are awesome! It’s a simple idea, but some people still find it hard to grasp.
When Shayna Moon, Associate Producer at the Sony studio in Santa Monica, shared the time a guy talked down to her and questioned if she even plays on a PlayStation, she sparked a viral Twitter thread. Other women shared their own experiences about what happened when dudes talked down to them because of their geeky hobbies. Scroll down, read about what happened, and share your own experiences in the comments, dear Pandas.
Shayna’s Twitter thread got over 90k likes and was retweeted more than 7.9k times which just goes to show that her message resonated with a lot of geeks out there.

I started sometimes giving such braindead answers too, quickest way to get rid of undesirables.
Commenting on strangers like that is impolite in any situation, really. Hope that taught him to mind his damn business.
This seems to happen so often, with female creators getting dismissed by fans of their own work.
Shayna is a true professional and nobody should doubt her love of video games. She worked in development teams behind the immensely popular God of War video game which was released in 2018 and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Shayna also volunteers with Amplifying New Voices, a program designed to educate diverse candidates on the ins and outs of the gaming industry.
For her achievements and involvement with video games most of her life, Shayna was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 list, in the 2020 Games category. That’s the kind of recognition we video game geeks could only dream about!
They can't seem to hear your ovaries. They prefer to be a d**k about it
I'd tell him I want to return it & buy it at some place that doesn't hire sexist people.
Age is just a number. IQ is a very inportant number. This guy probably had a very low important number.
According to Shayna, she has a “people-first” approach when it comes to video game production. She focuses on seeing people as individuals and seeing what work processes help them feel at home and keep them motivated to do their best.
But Shayna has a lot more talents than just working on video games. She’s also a writer and boasts some short stories and pieces of fiction that you can find on her personal website. In fact, she’s been writing fanfiction since 2003!
why are there so many negative comments? people running out of people to make feel bad so that they can feel better about their life? tsh. nice job shutting them up tho. kudos
But surely she was wearing it to please Hubby! That's literally her job! Amirite?... Right??... Anyone... ?
So recommend them the best product.it will kill them to see how right you are!
You actually ASKED for something new to read, he recommends something, then disses you for not having read it. No class...
I was in line at the supermarket last week and this guy thought he was the mayor of the line, trying to tell people where to place their carts and just running his mouth the whole time. I kept saying to myself, "not my goat, not my problem". Then he starts spouting, "It's like that song about keeping your hands to yourself by that woman from years ago" and he kept going on about it. I finally snapped. I said, "First of all, it wasn't a woman. Secondly, it was the 1986 song Keep Your Hands to Yourself by The Georgia Satellites. I actually saw them in concert back in the 80's, they opened for REO Speedwagon at SPAC." He dejectedly said, "It wasn't a woman?" I said, "No, it was The Georgia Satellites, you can look it up". He shut up after that, paid for his stuff and left. It wasn't even 8am and I was up to here with the whole situation. Charlie-up...49348d.jpg
Exactly. I can appreciate and even create music without knowing who wrote or performed a song on the radio!
Well to be fair her answer could be taken either way. Sounds like he was one of the good ones.
I am a research scientist and recently published a paper on psychedelics that got discussed on a reddit forum. When I found it and chimed in to clear up a couple points, some asshat mansplained my research to me. I was like, thanks bro.
I have had similar experiences in fandom, but funnily enough it was not with men. Once when I was out with friends someone had invited a girl, who was a superfan of a popular book series I also like. They introduced us and her first words were "Oh, you like those books too, let me test you!" and proceeds to try to quiz me. Another girl tried to tell me I hadn't read "real" fantasy if I hadn't read The Lord of the Rings (I had read it). Gatekeepers suck the fun out of everything.
I love the mansplaining ones. So recognizable! Me and a girlfriend were once playing a game of mega chess against two guys at a festival. The amount of men stopping and explaining to us how to play chess was astounding. We know how to play dude, we're winning, help those guys. Best part was when we left (after we won), one guy came up to us and apologized. "Sorry I assumed you couldn't play. It's just that normally women don't know chess." Not making it any better man, still insulting half of the world's population..
I know I have commented already, but I need to say something: I do not hate men in anyway and I am not a lesbian either. I was reading the article and giving my opinion on it. For some reason, because of that I have been called a dyke, a man hater and someone who has to have things explained to me. I was raised by both my mother and father to take care of myself and be strong. I don't see how being an independent woman makes me a man hater. Maybe someone can explain that to me.
I've never understood this idea from some men think that women don't read comics or play video games. Newsflash dudes, there are nearly just as many of us women as there are you guys who love video games and comics. Deal with it.
For the quarantine, get rid of the guy. He might spread idiotism to you. Get an animal.
My dad was trying to buy (using my money) a new (used) Alienware laptop for me. The guy who had the one I wanted to buy immediately said "I don't want to waste this much of a laptop on your daughter, she'd be much happier with a macbook for her facebook and shopping!". Needless to say we didn't hear back from him when my dad sent a picture of me on my old Alienware with GTA V up.
We used to have "game night" at the local pub about ten years ago. Usually Scrabble or something, but when Mortal Kombat vs. DC came out, my buddy the bartender brought that to the pub for game night. I asked to play first and IMMEDIATELY almost every guy there was either laughing like I said something funny or rolling their eyes. I kicked every single one of their asses, about half of them flawless victories.
Never judge a book by its cover. Some people just don't learn. I was at a seaside resort for a girls weekend. A guy tried to hit on one of us and brag about his diving certificate. One thing is trying to talk to a girl, which btw is kinda cute, another thing is bragging about stuff he didn't know much besides his entry level cert. I had a couple of hundreds dives under my belt and a few more advanced certs at the time lol
I have a T-Shirt of the game I'm assigned to. I keep it as a souvenir, since I'm a bit shy to flaunt it out (I'm not shy to wear merch of the things I am a fan of, though, and no, I'm not ashamed of my job - on the opposite! But it's a candid shy feeling....) But, now that the weather is getting better, after the quarantine, I may try and see what happens. (Although, I believe nothing will, because Koreans are usually mostly minding their own business.)
Why, in 2020, is it still a mindblowing thing that some women to play/know a fuckton about video games??? I really don't get it
When I bought my Porsche, there was always some loser willing to hassle me about driving "my boyfriend's car". I was driving for a friend in a race and ran into one of those a******s....and blew him out of the water. I've been racing since before I was legal to drive.
I feel this on so many levels. But I was so happy when one of my student workers (male btw) stood up for me. A student comes in "I need the ethernet turned on for my xbox" he pauses and looks at me, "Do you know what that is?" My student worker was living and started screaming , "ARE YOU SERIOUS!! She's a gamer!!! Of course she knows what your stanky XBOX is. GET OUT!!" That just warmed my heart.
Right after the PS3 came out, I went into a Game Stop to buy a PS2 memory card because I'd lost mine. The guy at the counter was super condescending and asked if I meant PS3 when I asked where they were. I just stared him in the eye and told him I'd just lost hundreds of hours of gameplay. He apologized and handed me a PS2 memory card.
When I was in high school I went to Hot Topic wearing a band tee from the metal band Death, and the employee asked me if that was my boyfriend's. I told him that I was single at that time. He then said "You're not supposed to be wearing that. Do you even listen to death metal?" I said that I listen to death metal and all other metal genres. He then said "Oh, Pierce the Veil isn't death metal." I don't even listen to screamo or whatever genre the emo kids listen to! I was fuming mad and to this day I will never step foot into a Hot Topic store. They were overpriced anyways ($2 for a button pin?)
I am 13 years old and a tomboy. People have told me I don't "look like a tomboy", which shouldn't really matter, because it's not how you look, it's how you act. I just wear jeans and graphic tees most of the time, maybe it's because I'm straight? Anyway, my church youth group had a sports day with time slots for the different sports, like you signed up for what you wanted when. But you were only allowed to do the same thing twice so others could play too. Anyway I signed up for basketball for the first round, because that is literally my 100% favorite sport of all time, and I've been playing for like 5 years, most of the time on BOYS teams because there weren't enough girls to form a girl team. So the fact that the rest of the kids doing bball were boys didn't faze me, right? So we're standing there, and the instructor says "Street Rules". Cool, standard half court game, done it 1000000 times, right? Then he goes "Anybody need me to explain the rules?" looking at me. I shake my head,
I've had a similar thing with my job, I'm an assistant teacher. The boys won't even listen to what I say :/
The first time I went to a lanparty with my ex, my brother and their friends, there was one guy who instantly started saying stuff like “oh a girl, what’s she doing here, she’ll suck at this game”. I’ve been playing all kinds of games since I could hold a controller. And I ended up kicking his (and few others) butt in Quake4. In the end he did apologize and we went to more lanparties as a group and played several MP games together.
World of Warcraft is so bad with this. I can have a normal interaction with someone, but the moment they find out I'm a girl it's "Oh you must have character boosted, there's no way a girl could level a character" like dude... it's not that hard. That game is easy mode these days. Another dude tried to convince another girl in the guild to make out with her SISTER on cam for him. Like WTF is wrong with you?! Glad i'm not on there anymore. I tend to just let people think I'm a dude online in whatever game. It's easier than dealing with the harassment.
Extremely unrelated to video games but all the mansplaining anecdotes have me remembering this one time, I went out to get coffee on my lunch break and came back to a locked building door. One of my coworkers was outside smoking and I stopped to say hello while fumbling my purchases around so I bave one hand free to punch in the code. One of the maintenance guys saw me and opened the door for me. I thanked him and he proceeded to interrogate me. "Do you work in this building? Which floor? Which company? Then you should remember the code for the door. It's XXXX. Remember it becuase we do lock it on Sundays and occasionally throughout the day on weekdays." I have been working at that building for half a year and occasionally see this dude in the mornings.
I’m kind of an outcast at school so I just end up thrown at random tables at lunch. A lot of the time there’ll be guys there talking about a video game and if it’s something I like then I’ll try to join the conversation. They always stop and stare at me and act all surprised like “You like video games?” B***h I got three Nintendos and a PS4. Yes I like video games, jeez
My sister and I played the original Nintendo console. We had another console later and I played PS4. I know the video games that I am on interested in and am pretty good at them. Being a woman doesn't take away my knowledge on video games or any other subject. Some guys need to realize that having to condescend or mansplain all the time only shows their insecurities. To the guys who don't treat women like this no matter what: Thank you.
I read "female Greeks" and was seriously confused after reading the first posts.
and then there's me who doesn't know sh*t abt half these games and hasn't ever heard of another 1/4.. reading this article.... lolol I am awkward as h3ll
