Most felines are Catolic, Purrrsbyterian, Catservative Jewish, or Sunnyspot Muslim. Please add any faiths I've omitted. I know for my travels that I have seen cats in and around worship buildings of all faiths. Knowing cats, they probably pick the faith that best suits their needs.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to belong to a long line of jesters to make humor work for you and your children. Parents can sometimes use joking as a distraction or departure from the usual routine – a break from the serious side of things.

With humor, moms and dad can calm down emotional situations, encourage proper behavior and strengthen the parent-child bond. Yet, many of us do not fully appreciate its potential.

Talya Stone, a former public relations specialist turned blogger and the woman behind online journals Motherhood: The Real Deal and 40 Now What, told Bored Panda that allowing yourself to switch off and not make a big deal out of everything can be a real gamechanger.

I had a bad burn on my foot a few years ago. The pain in the healing of it was beyond anything I'd ever felt. I can't imagine enduring the healing of such burns as this lady took. I'm in awe.

    Joe Reaves

The treatment is often worse than the burns. 3rd degree burns don't hurt - because they've burned the nerves away (ugh). But the treatment to keep them uninfected as they heal is known to be incredibly painful or at least it was a couple of decades ago. I don't think, painwise, its improved much. A lot of people with burns over a large area express how, during the treatment, they wished they hadn't been saved because they're not sure they can bear the pain. If the ones who survive say that I can't help but think it contributes to the low survival rate - I wonder how many of the ones who don't live to talk about it just gave up because they didn't want to keep going through the daily treatments (not disparaging them for that). You have to really have a strong will to live as well as good treatment and luck to survive that kind of injury.

If u love your parents, tell them. Doesn't have to be that hard. My dad is kindda cold but shows his love in many other ways and once in a while i'll drop an 'love u' just like passing by, and I can feel he feels touched by that. Btw, i think he has said to me "I love you' a hanful of times in my whole life (im 47) but is the kind of guy who would do a week long research on medicine if I told him I got a cold

I'm so glad kids aren't afraid to show love for their parents in the presence of their friends now. I remember back in the 90s hearing kids and teens talk trash and make fun of their parents, and get all angrily embarrassed if they were seen with their folks.

"The moment I learned not to take everything so seriously (or myself so seriously), I instantly became a better parent," Talya Stone said.

Susan Newman, Ph.D., who is a social psychologist researching and writing about parenting concerns, family dynamics and trends, agrees. She thinks even though parental anger may seem like the right response when your child misbehaves, it runs the risk of putting a wedge in your relationship.

"Consider a thoughtful, humorous exchange: laughter or a joke, but one not made at your child’s expense in a way that demeans him," Newman suggested in U.S. News. "Sarcasm and put-downs work against tightening your parent-child bond. Let's say you send your child to his room or take your daughter's cellphone away for two weeks. You are ultimately pushing a child away who already feels miserable because he broke a rule or your favorite bowl (or because he got caught). She's stressed by the transgression that curtailed her privileges and may begin to harbor resentment toward her restricting parent."

This is lovely, but I’m just sayin, don’t get all stabby with me. Why exactly did the teacher need to carry the baby and feed him? If the kid was able to keep cool in the lecture and the feeding distraction was the same for teacher or student it doesn’t really make sense. Ups to the teacher for helping out, but don’t really get why she couldn’t have just been cool with student having a kid in class. If it is to keep from a lack of focus like yeah but not really

    Blue Cicada

Babies are carried, get a lot of touch contact, in many cultures. You don't put them down unless you are sitting down. Babies fuss less, potty train much earlier (compared to current US avg age), etc. Student needs both hands, needs to focus. Professor is pro at keeping baby quiet (carrying) and working while distractions abound (experienced mom/parent). Lack of access to affordable childcare leads to situations like this. Also, colleges w draconian attendance rules lead to situations like this.

Of course, that doesn't mean that humor is always the best answer. "Anything that puts your child in physical danger or seems to put his academic or social standing at risk calls for a serious chat or imposing restrictions," Newman highlighted.

But with that being said, in many instances, a lighter approach reduces both the parent's and the child's stress. So why not make use of it?

"It can also keep a situation from escalating and reduce a child's feelings of regret or remorse over having done something inappropriate. Most importantly, humor underscores that you love your child in spite of the immediate misstep."

Poor thing is so confused! "Where do I snuggle up now? My mom, as usually, because you never change a winning team? Grandma or Great-Grandma, because you don't know when you will have the next possibility to? Will somebody be cold or feel left out if I go sleep with somebody else? Why can't they just cuddle up in a big pile like good kitties do??? So much easier! You climb on top and be done with it!!!"

The mother demonstrated determination, moral fortitude, and grit, which deserved to be applauded and recognised with an honorary degree. She has not demonstrated the knowledge and skills required for a “standard” degree. That’s not what she was aiming for or what she needs so there is no issue here. She is still amazing and is being recognised.

I’ll never forget a time when I was on a flight and a kid kicked my seat and screamed for 10 hours straight. The kid was about 5 years old. He would scream and kick to get what he wanted. And surprise, surprise, mom catered to each demand. He called her names, and also kicked her when she would even attempt to go against him. This woman didn’t bat an eye or apologize to anyone around her. Her only reply was, “what do you want me to do, he’s a kid.” I could think of a couple of things to do to that demonic monster kicking my seat though.

For parents who are infuriated by what their child has done, summoning humor in that moment can be hard, but Newman thinks it's worth a shot to make something out of an already unpleasant situation. The social psychologist invites moms and dads to imagine these situations:

    • Your toddler throws ketchup at your beige curtains – a direct hit before company arrives in 15 minutes for dinner.
    • Your teenager, a new driver, crumples the fender backing out of a parking space when he was told not to take the car to the mall.
    • Your 7-year-old tries on every one of your lipsticks, breaking most of them in half.
    • Your child uses your favorite handsaw on a mystery, gooey surface, and the saw is now only suitable for collecting dust or the trash.
    • You warn the kids that nothing good could come from playing ball in the house. Two minutes later, they crack the living room window.

Yeah, as corn chip said, Agender means not having a gender, while non-binary is an umbrella term that encompasses any gender outside the man/woman binary, or can be used as a label by itself. Agender is technically under the non-binary umbrella as it is not man or woman, but not all non-binary people are Agender. Some feel aligned with one of the binary genders but not fully, or some feel a concept of gender, but it is not like man or woman. Probably unnecessarily long, but I hope this helps :)

I have bladder cancer and polycystic kidney disease. I just had my 1st surgery and chemo Friday. My mom is a retired nurse so she is even better suited than most to be my sounding board. I feel bad for needing to be able to vent - to whine & cry and it's only her that I allow to see that side of me... Yesterday I was in a lot of pain and I told her that I felt like I am losing it- my mind is just overloaded & I can't seem to think straight. Her response was "I can give you a kidney, I've always assumed that I would eventually, but I am afraid that my brain is about used up,sorry If I could I would" I thought that was so very SWEET on top of being hilarious & the laughter snapped me out of my self pity wallowing! I am 55 years old & I STILL NEED MY MOMMA SOMETIMES! All she wanted for mothers day was for me to come through the procedure alright.

"None of the [before mentioned points are] particularly funny in the heat of the moment," Newman said. "As you attempt to control your displeasure and decide what to do, consider a reaction that's different from your usual approach. For instance, take the line, 'nothing good can come of that,' as a family mantra, an inside joke, and call it up when you see trouble brewing next time."

"Chances are good that your kids will laugh and start using it themselves (or with their siblings). They may even think twice about having a food fight or using your things without asking, and the line will be one more touching point between you. Alternatively, you can jump up and down or lie on the floor (not speaking) to 'say' without words, 'Stop what you’re doing right now!' And the children will think their parent acting ridiculously is quite entertaining."

We can't all survive on what our jobs pay us here, and having an adult child living at home means we can't rent that room out to a stranger for extra income. It's only fair that they pitch in to help pay the bills since they're using the home too, and most people charge their kids only a fraction of what rent would normally cost.

I see nothing wrong with a grown child paying rent. It could be that the money is needed to contribute to covering household expenses. It is also a good way to prepare the person for the cost of living when they do move out. My parents charged all five kids rent after we graduated from high school, except when we went to college. It was $200 a month and they put it in a savings account. When we moved out to an apartment, they gave us the money to cover down payments and other costs. They allowed us to take our bedroom furniture if we wanted it.

Single Mom Dresses As Dad So Her Son Wouldn't Miss "Donuts With Dad" Day At School

Single Mom Dresses As Dad So Her Son Wouldn't Miss "Donuts With Dad" Day At School

Today at my son Elijah's skewl as I was dropping him off I ask him why there were so many cars... He said Donuts with Dad, so we quickly went back home cause I wasn't about to let him miss out... I know seeing other dads with their kids isn't easy for me but it's life, at least I can do whatever it takes to put a smile on that face, so here it goes.

It would be better with a "Donuts with someone you love" day. So many dont have a present dad. Or simply two loving mums instead. If you have two dads, does both get a donut? Never heard of it, but it sounds weird with so specific events, so assumes US?

I wish schools would stop doing this kind of thing. Make it 'someone you love' like another comment suggests or 'someone who loves you'. These days if you suggest that you get people whining about SJWs and 'woke' this or that, but there are so many reasons kids don't have a mum or don't have a dad or have neither and it's hard growing up without a parent. We don't need to make it harder by highlighting how different they are and how their family isn't 'normal'.

I just think it shouldn't be a thing at all. Not every adult can take the time off to go to these things. If you really want to do something like that give each kid a 2 free donuts coupon or something so they can get it with the adult in their life and at a time that works for that family.

Some states get this awful "don't say gay"-law and than schools discriminate children for not having a dad - as just to show what kind of genderism really gets back to the kids. -.-

If you want to give it a go, Newman suggests these silly approaches:

    • Act silly. Walk backward or abruptly stop speaking as a signal that you don't approve of whatever might be going on at the moment. Your children will laugh at you once they understand your action means you are not happy with the current behavior.
    • Talk to your child in pig Latin. Or ask her to repeat back to you something you said in the language she’s studying in school or in pig Latin.
    • Swoop in. Pretend you’re an angel or part of a cleanup crew (if a mess has been created) to diffuse the situation and get help with cleanup.

    • Get emotional, but not really. Make believe you are crying or sad, or do a dance and give it a name: “The Broken Vase Dance” or the “Not Going to Bed Dance.”
    • Make up a jingle. Use it when your child might be acting unsuitably or is about to break one of your rules, and repeat it often. For example, bust out a tune when you see your daughter is about to go over her allotted nightly screen time. Or, sing when your son is about to touch an object he shouldn’t.
    • Laugh at yourself. Do this when you make a mistake or do something boneheaded.

Today Is My First Mother’s Day And I Gotta Say, I’m Killing It

Today Is My First Mother’s Day And I Gotta Say, I’m Killing It

I grew up with abusive, drug-addicted parents. I was always filled with anxiety about having my own kids and wondered if I’d be a good mom.

Can relate. My parents were awful, but I'm raising my child the exact opposite of how they parented. I'm always there for her, respect her feelings, and know her worth. As a result, we've always been best friends and can tell each other anything

This is why I don't like people standing up in court and using their background (unless super extreme or involving, for example, head injuries or Foetal Alcohol Syndrome or similar but even then 'don't have kids' is a viable option) as a mitigator. I get that there is a correlation between growing up in an abusive household and going on to be abusive, but it IS a choice once you're an adult. Make a choice to be better than your parents or if you really can't get therapy and/or don't have kids.

My husbands mother was the same. Was on her own raising three boys after leaving an abusive husband. She taught math at a local high school where kids sometimes show up in orange jumpsuits and ankle monitors after a weekend in lock up. But she was there for her sons and never gave up on the students. Every student that went on to get a career out of high school was a success story for her. One of her proudest moments was when a student was invited to London to participate in a culinary try out for cooking schools. He was chosen to attend the Culinary Institute of America in NY. Her reward, she got to chaperone his trip to London. First time she was ever outside the USA. She had a blast. We lost her 8 years ago.

So your mom supported all of you on a secretary's salary back in the days when minimum wage could support a family plus a mortgage payment. If people want to know what's wrong with the US today, I challenge anyone to support 4 kids on a secretary's salary!

Same feeling. Today I am having a fever when I wrote this comment. The highest temperature was 38.2 °C (100.4 °F), every muscle in my body aches. My mom came in my room, brought warm water with honey and told me to drink it. I don't know which one is magical, the honey or my mom, my temperature now is 37.1 °C (98.78 °F) though still a little warm my muscle aches recided. My mom is a stern woman, we don't say "I love you" we just do things to show we love each other. Love you mama.

I saw a pet shelter once and the animals were all so scared and cooped up and old (a few even a bit mangled) I used all the money I had made babysitting to buy a bunch of the saddest looking ones. I now have to take care of two dogs (one being too old to walk) three cats, seven loud birds, four bunnies, and I love volunteering there! I constantly smell like wet dog and I’m always busy but I regret nothing! (Other than the fact that maybe the commotion stresses the bunnies out probably) the best decision I’ve made in years. Currently working on a giant outdoor playground so the birds can have the closest to their old rainforest since they aren’t domesticated even. I’m just a teen and really really have NO IDEA why my mom agreed to that lol

My son went to meet a friend on the park yesterday. It was the first time he’d gone out, spur of the moment, on his own. I panicked a bit too, I get this.

Sorry, this is not what good mothers do. Good mothers keep their children safe and help them learn good judgement. Not respecting a grown adult is pretty sad.

When I was in my late 20s, having left home about 10 years before, my parents came to stay. Actually they stayed at a hotel close by and I gave them a key to let themselves into my flat for breakfast. I heard them come in but didn't actually greet them then, I was busy getting ready for work and y'know family. I was nearly ready and nearly about to join them when my mum walked into my bedroom (my door was shut and she didn't knock) to wake me up for work.

You’ll always be her baby, and she’ll always worry about and look out for you. Enjoy all that comes with having a mom who loves you, because, trust me, you’ll miss her when she’s gone. 🥹

It's a mom thing. We would give our children everything if we could, it feels wrong to take anything away from them. If one of my children takes me out for dinner, I enjoy it but I find myself thinking "this could have paid for new underwear for my daughter" or "a new video game for my granddaughters". I love them so much and want their lives to be as happy and comfortable as possible.

Isn't that normal? We've got heaps and heaps of children's clothes in our basement, because my mother and my older sisters kept whatever was still good for the next child in the family. Came in very handy when we had our twins in 2020. They're wearing things that we wore when we were toddlers, and I still recognise most of my nieces' favourite outfits. Do other people just throw things away?!?

I moved 13 hours away when I was in my 20s. My mother asked what I wanted for christmas/birthday (the dates are days apart) I asked for recipes. The place I was living couldn't live up to my father's creations and many of my beloved dishes were obsolete where I was. It is my most cherished possession to this day. My siblings did did not see the significance when mom asked if they wanted a copy, not until years later. They are both far more stable and well off than me in most ways. I'll make a copy for them as well. It means a lot to me that even though my siblings and I take after my parents in extraordinary ways, my seemingly obvious inadeptness proves wise in the long run.

yes it's a common form of discrimination... the idea is women are "mere sex objects" and so the less they wear, the better. However, men are expected to adhere to dresscode. A similar case is cover charge. In our country it's commonplace on large parties to charge only the men cover charge, so as to encourage the ratio of women to men to be higher for predatory purposes. It's gross.

Love is love … your children are still your children no matter what path they take. They’ll always be little pieces of your heart & soul no matter how near or far. I don’t understand parents who use love as a bargaining tool. You don’t love people by choice or conditionally. That’s not love.

All that said, good for her, I've been working on cars for well over 20 years and can 100% say that drum brakes are a pain in the a$$ for for someone like me, let alone someone that's never repaired them before.

Axle grease XD tires are FILTHY. Brakes and rims/hubcaps are filthy. Grease is applied to keep everything lubricated, and dirt/dust/grime sticks to the grease/lubricant. So much of a car’s exterior workings are very filthy XD I’m black grease up to my elbows whenever I do any work on my car.

How does one "figure out" how brakes work, how tight/loose to make them, &c? A manual might help. It's dangerous to have home-made brakes. Lotsa luck on I-95.

I don’t know how some parents can have the mindset that their kids owe them, since they fed them, bathe them, change their diapers, put a roof over their head ect ect., dummy ,that’s something a parent is supposed to provide for their children , won’t be surprised if they have them sign a weaver when they turn 5 to pay every thing back

What horses}{it: babies can't talk so they don't get a vote. If you ask for nothing in return, you're probably very bitter & have a rotten life. 1-sided relationships never work whether it's within the family or boss/employee, friend/friend, lover/lover, et al. Leave the platitudes on wooden plaques. Does her "good life" consist of a "huge time suck" which is dictionary.com's definition of 'time sucking,' i.e., social media like TikTok. BP adds quality & laffs to one's life but disinformation & lies permeate the web & some can't tell the difference.

That made me cry. When I legally changed my last name to my (step)dad's last name, he actually cried. (He never cries.) He's been my dad since I was 12 (bio was never involved). I was getting divorced, judge said I could use any name. I was 27. Even gave my kids a hyphenated last name to carry on the family name. Having someone love you who didn't have to means the world. He's my dad and I love him dearly! His parents (grandmom and grandpop) even told dad's sister to include me & my kids in the family tree or take him out! I didn't know about this at the time, but grandpop apparently got upset & old her he wanted nothing to do with a family tree that didn't include me & my siblings. . (She was only including biological family) She'd been working on it for years. I didn't find out about it until grandmom's death 5 years ago (grandpop passed 15 years ago.) Finding out about this means more to me than I can say. I lucked out & got an amazing family. Took a while to find them, but they were worth waiting for!

My mother baked her beloved bread loaves to give to our garbage men, teachers, bus drivers and anyone else who's services helped our family. We didn't have much money, but the whole town knew of her baking prowess and looked forward to receiving those bread loaves! Mother taught us that any honest job is respectful and should be treated as such.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I know how destroying it can be, even though we do it out of the strongest love there is. My dad got a brain injury in an accident when I was 18, and we took care of him at home for 21 years. I never moved out. He died last year. I’m 40 but I wouldn’t trade a second of those 21 years, even though it has also kind of ruined me. I hope you still get to have some bright sunshine moments with your mom. Hang in there!

Three loads: whites and towels on "hot," sheets on hot (separate so they don't get stuff twisted up in them,) jeans and colors on cold. And fold or hang promptly. If you've ever had to rely on a laundromat you learn to condense those loads!

But how is that a water bottle? What is it for? It seems to keep very little water and have a lot of extra stuff (voume and weight) to carry around. Or is it a baby cup and we only see the lid and you are supposed to suck on that thing that looks like the only possible water container on the image? And if so, what is that handle for? Are you supposed to carry the bottle in 45 degrees angle?

You have it about right from the second guess, you're looking at it from the top and the plastic part is a mouthpiece to dispense water from the bottle we can't see. It's not a baby cup, and yes those handles annoy me too since it does always tilt to 45 degrees.

Yes, they’re waterproof mats for sleeping on, not blankets, but OP’s mom still put a lot of effort in, either way!

They're a lot of work but are water proof and will actually retain heat in winter and give air flow to cool you in the summer. The hard part is cutting out all the straips of plastic and sewing/connecting them so you can use them. And it can be difficult to work with until you get used to it.

I wish you people understood the reason they block things like this. It has nothing to do with 'snowflakes' or censorship. It's because of ad revenue. The thing that makes BP a 'free' to use website. If they end up on a list of websites with regular nsfw content, they lose on significant ad revenue. Take your arguments to Google and Microsoft...
