“Safety First!”: This Online Group Is Dedicated To The Dumbest Work Safety Examples, Here Are 45 Of The Worst Ones (New Pics)
No matter what job you do, each workplace has its own work and safety requirements every employee has to follow without a second thought. For other health and safety regulations, the employer is responsible, as it makes sure no worker gets harmed while on duty, which might also make them eligible for compensation.
Some people, however, choose to play with luck and see where ignoring all they know about safety in the workplace will take them. As we may suspect, it won’t be far, and their safety violation cases will also land in this notorious corner of Reddit known as OSHA.
Created back in 2013, the community’s slogan reminds everyone of “Safety First,” something that the examples which get shared there totally lack. Below we selected some of the craziest posts shared on the OSHA subreddit, so scroll down. Also, be sure to check out our previous features with more OSHA content here, here and here.

Captain Ladder Has Arrived

Just A Small Jump And It'll Move Again, Nothing To Worry About Jim
This had to do with a very old-fashioned safety feature. Old elevators from the 50s and 60s had pressure sensors in the floor designed so that kids would not be able to use the elevator unsupervised - if someone under a certain weight steps in, then the floor sensor doesn't trip and the buttons don't work. The way to circumvent this is to do a small jump because it tricks the sensor into registering you even if you're under the weight limit. When I was a kid, this used to happen every time I went to see my grandma, because her building had one of these elevators (now long since replaced) and it also had an audible "click" when the pressure sensor was pressed. Of course, the scary part is that the doors on that elevator were manual and if you stepped in and the floor sensor didn't trip, the elevator would think the cabin was empty and turn off the light - also, people from different floors could still call the lift so you'd ride with the inside doors open and in the dark...
Alexandru, thanks for that awesome information. That's so cool, glad you shared that.
Load More Replies...I'd be stuck if I was in this alone as I'm in a wheelchair and cannot stand let alone jump... given that wheelchair users make up a large percentage of lift users, this is quite worrying
I had a former coworker who got stuck in the same elevator twice from jumping in it. We were technical instructors... in the physics department... at MIT. Twice.
That's a "no" from me. Been stuck in a lift once, not keen to repeat the experience.
Remind me to put this sign up in the elevator on the boat I work on. It's only 4 floors, not gonna hurt....
Stairway To Heaven
As a handyman, this freaks me the f**k out. Haha. Adjustable stair ladders are $150. How much is the trip to the ER?

To find out more about how exactly health and safety violations at work can damage the reputation of a business, Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Audrey Tang, a chartered psychologist, media spokesperson and author of multiple books, including "Be A Great Manager Now", "The Leader's Guide to Mindfulness," and "The Leader's Guide to Resilience,”.
Dr. Tang explained that there exists a strange phenomenon called the "Service recovery paradox" where if a customer's trust is breached by the company and the company is able to fix the issue, the customer is more likely to be more loyal than if the breach had not occurred in the first place.
“It is possible that this may also apply to the employee of a company. If there has been a breach of trust and it is rectified, it is possible that trust within the organization can be retained, and in turn, this can result in more favorable publicity,” Dr. Tang explained.

Safety Suggestions Are Overrated, Guts And Sheer Will Suffice
Sometimes s**t just has to get done. Most cubicle people don’t understand someone has to do the dirty work.
That's still not the way to get it done. A ladder at that angle might not just fall, it might even fold in the middle. It's not actually about how high up this is, but that the ladder is ridiculously out of spec.
Load More Replies...Well, look, I wouldn't do this, but if the bottom of the ladder was REALLY securely fastened and couldn't slip, is it really all that different from climbing a ladder in a normal position? The angle is a bit steep, I'll give you that, though.
Well, I would consider doing this depending of the amount of work that needed to be done. If the whole chimney has to be grouted, nope. And only at my own home.

Just A Man On A Stack Of Pallets Raised By A Forklift Changing The Bulb On A Street Light
idk, it seems like it should be on the redneck engineering post ngl
That appears to be the case. The pallets are strapped together. This is much more secure than it looks.
Load More Replies...I love how the top pallet has a railing around it - as if THAT is going to help in case of a fall !
According to the psychologist and book author, it is also possible that when an organization has truly learned from its errors, we might appreciate its genuine growth and ability to feel remorse and make changes. “Although it would depend on how serious or life-changing the outcome is of the breach in all cases - there will be many people from the thalidomide tragedy or the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster who may be less forgiving even now,” she added.
If It Gets Wet You Might Have To Buy A New One
I saw that some areas are filling empty milk jugs with spray foam, sealing the lid and tying them in pairs. While sketchy, they at least don't get stolen like real life rings do, and cheap to replace if they do get stolen. I'd rather have foam filled milk jugs that are available than a locked up life ring.
You guys have it all wrong. This steel cage doesn't know how to swim so they got it its own life preserver. That's some heads up thinking.
The security zip tag, I am guessing, was the original method used to secure the lifesaver. Like the ones used for fire extinguishers. The lock was added later due to people messing with the cage and breaking the security tag.
Load More Replies...Me: someone help, he's drowning––– Lifeguard: oh f*** I dropped the keys
What's really sad is it looks as if that cage was specifically designed for the life preserver.

Things you can do to put out an electrical fire: Cut power to electrical device. Call emergency services. Use fire extinguisher rated for Class C fires (inc. ABC extinguishers). Smother with sodium bicarbonate/baking soda. Cover with a fire blanket. Never use water on an electrical fire if the electricity is still on.
HEY! Let me throw a bucket of water on this fire! Don't call 911 or have real firemen come out!
A Signboard For The Blind Next To Bare Wire
It's so that a blind person knows the sign is for them. /s
Load More Replies...I know it looks like somebody should have noticed this, but these conversations go like this: "Boss, I noticed a real safety issue when I was putting up the Braille sign." "Am I paying you to find new problems or to put up signs?" "But...." "I'll fill out a form. Don't worry about it."
There is a CHANCE this is a low voltage doorbell, but I wouldn't stake my finger on it.
Yeah, judging by the size of the wires this is almost surely a low voltage open switch. I have seen these accidently cross wired at the transformer to be running 110v but you'd have to be barefoot or touching metal to feel anything when you touched it. Plus who doesn't like a little surprise pick me up every now and then?
Load More Replies...Looks like a broken doorbell button. 24 volts class 2 circuit. Not really much of a hazard.
Incredibly, research into trust has shown through brain images that when trust is destroyed, you can actively see certain neurological links fade. “And as a development from that, restitution seems to be the most effective way of rebuilding - but as I said above, when the consequences of the breach are so great, how possible is it to restore what has been lost?” Dr. Tang wondered.
However, when it comes to rebuilding trust after safety breaches, there’s a lot to be done. Dr. Tang argues that it would be possible in the scenarios when a sincere apology and acceptance of wrongdoing is given. Moreover, there has to be clarity in the procedures to put it right, as well as evidence that changes have been made.

Of course, not check to see if people were still in the buildings first. Odd getting locked into your work building and security dude left his cell phone on his desk. Good thing there wasn't a fire
Reminds me of my previous school. Because several residents complained about students smoking on the sidewalk in front of the school door, it was always locked for everyone during breaks (even for the teachers). The janitor was the only one with a key and was always out somewhere in the three school buildings. Unfortunately, in the first main building, the school door was the only way out; the other exits were in the outbuildings and too far away. In the event of a fire, that would probably have been a deathtrap, always reminded me of the creepy scene from Watership Down with the blocked rabbit hole....

This is the equivalent of a parent jinx... "oh wow, look at how peacefully you kids are playing together..." - 5 seconds later, someone is crying.
In a previous interview on a similar topic, Dr. Tang told Bored Panda we only have a finite amount of energy we can devote to productive work within a day... "We know when we are ill, for example, that ability to focus diminishes and performance suffers - if a workplace is making someone sick, you have already reduced productivity (not to mention breached the trust of the employee), but also, even if an employee is worried about something they have noticed that is awry, their own mind will be distracted and in turn affect performance,” Dr. Tang argued.

I worked at a major fast food chain and we received a food delivery that had cases of real eggs at the bottom with heavier food items on top, needless to say we got credit back for all the broken product, but the credit was for the full case and we were able to salvage some so we ended up with free eggs
Interestingly, there are many “hygiene factors” at work that directly affect the satisfaction of their employees. Dr. Tang explained that such hygiene factors include things like working conditions, behavior of immediate management, and the physical workspace.
“More recently, research into organizational health speaks of 'psychological safety' as another element of health - at least emotional and mental health(!) - in the workplace,” she said.
Someone Complained About Contractors Leaving A Hole Exposed Without Any Barriers. This Was Their Solution
For these you need another guy, and a third has to remove them later. These are very specialised jobs /s
Load More Replies...I saw a sad story about 30 years ago, when workers did this same thing and covered a, lets say 'mini river' cause can't find the exact term in english. Then a guy carrying his nearly newborn crossed over it, fell through and lost him. The guy could barely survive the strength of the flow.
That's actually a pretty standard covering for a hole that the construction dug for a reason. Like, if they are running underground piping/wiring or something, or intending to mount something into the ground, they need to be able to expose and cover it regularly throughout the day. A plywood sheet with 'hole' so people know it's there for a reason is just to keep people from falling in/through until the hole has served it's purpose and a better long term solution has been used.
I came from the wrong side - what the heck is "ELOH" supposed to mean?
The area is securely coned off. It's not the fault of the workers if you dumbass people ignore caution tape, delineators, cones, signs, the fact that the concrete within this area has been ripped up leaving a gaping hole. Which they put a large board over to cover it. Here's a suggestion. *STAY OUT OF WORK ZONES!* Go around, take a different path. Aside from the fact that this particular zone is where vehicles would normally park so it shouldn't be a problem anyway.
I am so incredibly stupid I found myself, for a few seconds, wondering where the "A" would fi. Hoale? Holea? Haole? Then I realized it's Ahole ( or is it?)

For those who have never stepped on these tiny step ladders, the weight is about to shift, and he's about to hit his head against that marble counter. RIP
Wanna Go To The Hospital? Nah I’m Good
Do people usually just "walk off" the amputation and NOT go to a hospital?
Pretty sure I see "Did someone lose an eye?" over there on the right
ANY injury at work is supposed to be documented by the company in the very least. You never know what small injury can lead to horrible infections and amputation.
Dr. Tang also said that “if a worker doesn't feel psychologically safe, i.e. they don't feel heard, or perhaps they are criticized all the time, perhaps they don't feel they can ask if they need support. This can be hugely detrimental to motivation, retention and performance - not to mention the employee's mental and emotional wellbeing."

Labor Foreman Didn’t Feel Like Moving The Lift So This Is How He Wants Us To Unload
That looks suspiciously like a loading bay that vehicles can back right up to....
A lot of places have loading bays, having a loading bay doesn't mean you have the space for vehicles to actually use it. When I was a younger man working labour, would do deliveries and sometimes the loading bays were in narrow alleys where you could not even get this good and angle.
Load More Replies...Actually looks ok to me, used to do that a lot in construction back in the day

Load More Replies...That's a mechanic's engine mount. It "will" hold a car up that size. It's the mount on VERY fragile plywood, there are no blocks under front wheels nor is there a secondary jack to help with the weight...and most of the operation is on the damn grass(unstable). Another thing. You NEVER get under a lifted vehicle without backup. Morons.
One time in Mexico I almost saw a guy get crushed to death using he wrong kind of jack to lift a car. Right as he was about to slide under it, the jack slipped and the car slammed to the ground.
Unless there's another crane on the other side, this could end very badly. And, this is great way to f**k up your rear axle. Also, this guy bought a shop crane but can't be bothered to use a set of jack stands?
You can tell there's nothing on the other side - the wheel/tire on the passenger side of the car looks like it's hanging lower, and just the angle of the back roof line tells me there's no support on that side. PLUS that crane/hoist - it's from Harbor Freight!!!

Cigarettes And Gasoline
People forget that gas fumes are combustible and assume if there's no liquid visible they're fine.
I used to work at a gas station and I used to love stopping the pump when people were smoking and getting gas and then getting all stupefied when quit working and come in and be all like my pumps not working and said ya I shut it off NO smoking near gas pumps
I hate when people do this!! I saw a gaggle of older ladies in a car lighting up while the man was filling up. Just because YOU'VE had 82 years already.....
I went to the reddit post, and this guy had a very good explanation as to why this isn't really as dangerous as you'd think, along with a couple of links that prove it: https://www.scienceabc.com/eyeopeners/can-cigarette-ignite-light-puddle-gasoline-fire.html https://mythresults.com/special7 "Highly recommend watching this, it was a fun episode" "Haven't got a cold hard explanation for you. Gasoline itself isn't going to go boom from encountering a lit cigarette, but gasoline vapors can. I'd be far more wary of having a lit cigarette in e.g. a closed one car garage that smelled faintly of gasoline, because that means there's a gas can in there somewhere that's been venting fumes out into the garage. The vapor around a gas pump disperses pretty rapidly - but not rapidly enough for a static electricity spark to be safe around it either. Karen in her fleece joggers reaching back into her car while pumping gas to grab her smart phone is at way more risk of blowing."
Just because you can't see vapour doesn't mean it's not there! https://www.flir.co.uk/discover/instruments/gas-detection/is-it-really-that-dangerous-to-smoke-at-a-gas-station/
Load More Replies...Cigarettes can't light gas on fire. The ignition temperature is higher than what a cigarette burns at. The reason they ask to not smoke is lighting a cigarette can set the gas on fire. The spark from a lighter
Honestly, the reps inside should have been paying attention. I worked at a gas station retail store. Gas pumps are required to be seen by the workers at all times, and that's why the registers are always near windows for just this reason. When you go to start pumping gas, an alert comes up on the registers. A rep has to approve it for you to begin pumping and the reason is we're supposed to check to see if you're smoking or have a gas can in your car instead of on the ground. They approved it and clearly weren't checking, or he lit up after he started pumping.
This jackass works there. I worked at a Sunoco years ago and turned off the pumps several times when someone was at a pump smoking. There's a lot of gas underground.

Load More Replies...I've seen this corrected once, we used a forklift that had rotating forks for tipping bins. Went in under the chassis and above the wheels, lowered slowly and the weight of the forks and cage were enough to start tipping back. The counter weight of the load in front meant that the fork truck never took a huge load. Once it was down the doors were opened and a large pallet of goods placed just inside the door while the load at the front was adjusted. All quite anticlimactic
That was not loaded well. Or they had to slam on the brakes and the entire load of heavy objects shifted slightly

My dad fell from about this height and sustained a catastrophic brain injury that left him in a near-vegetative state, wearing diapers and needing a feeding tube inserted through his abdomen. This is not “fine” and it doesn’t matter how “fit” the people look. Falling from a ladder is NOT safe and you can get a brain injury or a fractured skull even falling from a stepstool.
Load More Replies...That’s nothing, I have a 20 foot roof and the amazing gutter installation crew would jump their ladders left and right. Scared the hell out of me but it’s their world. Respect
If they fall/get injured, they will make a claim against the homeowner’s policy.
No, if licensed and insured, then their insurance covers accidents. Its the uninsured "handy men" you have to watch out for.

So Was Anyone Aware There Are Chemicals That Burst Into Flames When In Contact With Cardboard? Because That's What We Learned At Work Today
Could have been concentrated nitric acid or even perchloric acid
Load More Replies...These are boxes of ammunition. Could have had quite a bad day there.
Well, ammo for a Nerf Gun.. not real ammo that would contain explosive materials.
Load More Replies...I'm hoping that info in written on the container of whatever dripped onto the cardboard.

Boss: “You Don’t Need Any Ppe For That Tool, Quit Whining”
I don't know what tool is it, but sometimes safety stickers are bit too much. Like the "danger, corrosive" sticker on distilled water.
Well water is the universal solvent. Sometimes it just takes eons.

The Triple Ladder Scaffolding
The two jacks on the right should be secured to the building near the top. If they are they should be safe. The ladder with the ladder jack against a sloping roof could turn out to be interesting, however.

The nozzle is called a cam-lock. It’s solid and would take a tank to crush it. Did this person ride that plane?
Let Me Just Cut Out These Pesky Beams
I can attest to this. I'm a contractor and I see this quite frequently when doing renovations. The plumber had cut through supporting beams. Very common unfortunately and still gets me mad every time that I see it!
Plumbers have absolutely no care when it come to beams. Just want to run pipe.
Discovered that in my house when I was doing renovations. Previous homeowner/contractor had cut the beams under the toilet area.

The pallets are meant to be turned the other way, so they lock into the racking. That is terrifyingly that they are all just sitting on top of the racks.

My dad is a health and safety consultant and in the Uk and said it 100% would be here, so I'm guessing it would there too
There are never band aids. They got used up and nobody bothered to replace them. Seen this everywhere.

Judging by the shadow that's a solid aluminum catwalk. Construction is similar to a ladder but it has a deck built on it. Get it at Home Depot
Still it's attached to ladders that's not safe......

My husband did this once. Once was all it took. He wears a beard now to cover where the doctors reattached his lips and chin when they were sliced off after he hit a pressurized pipe. A 20 dollar face shield would have made it a no big deal situation. Luckily he lived and learned. He's more safety conscious than the safety guy at work now. Imagine that.

I put my back out at work by stepping into a pothole in the pitch dark part of the parking lot when unloading my van. They tried to send me on a course to learn how to pick up stuff correctly so it wouldn't happen again. I suggested they fill in the holes and get more lights.

I have an example from my first job!! My manager got mad at me for sitting down to edit a payroll and threw me outside the store— after dark as a teenage girl, alone, WHILE THERE WAS A GUY STALKING TEENAGE GIRLS HOME!!! what a great job experience <333

I once found a very mangled up gold wedding ring in a bag of sawdust for my hamster bedding. It was once beautiful. Engraved outside, and inside with stunning script, but all twisted and torn. I worried so much if she had had her finger ripped off in machinery. I wrote to them (pre internet) with photos and details. A whole 3 weeks later I received a reply. The lady factory worker doesn't know how she lost it, but was delighted it was found, and yes, her hand was intact. I was so relieved. All's well that ends well. Phew !!
So much anxiety inducing images. No wonder the rates of deaths in the construction (and similar) are high when there is so much of this stuff going on. It's dangerous enough doing things the right and safe way.
Looking back on my childhood working for my parents we did some questionable things that wouldn't fly today. Here are a couple from the cleaning business they had: 1. We cleaned apartment buildings downtown on "junkie row". It was pretty common for people to break into one of the buildings and shoot up in the stairwell areas that were intended for safe shelter in case of earthquakes (also common where I live). Because of the spacing, they'd toss their used needles in the back where only a kid could reach them. So every weekend my job was to take a dust pan and small pail to shovel them. No gloves, no long sleeves. It's a miracle I was never jabbed with one. 2. Also in those same buildings. When a tenant moved out we'd clean the place for the next person to move in including the windows. I remember my dad holding me by the ankles as I cleaned the exterior windows on the 4th floor.

A lot of these problems come from cheap property owners/managers. They balk at price quotes from real companies with proper equipment and competent workers. Then go looking for any handyman that will take the job.
Not one single picture of Egypt, Malta, Middle East, or any other country where Health & Safety are non existent.
