At the crossroads of architecture and home design lie stairs. They serve an important and practical function and they can serve as important design elements, but as this aptly named Facebook group loves to point out, they can also be downright deadly without the appropriate safety considerations.

Honestly, it takes some talent and creativity to make stairs that are as unsafe as some of the masterpieces on this list. Some seem downright uncomfortable while others present clear tripping hazards or even fool the eyes into hiding individual steps. Let us know which ones you think you’d trip on in the comments.

It really does look like a ramp, but if you zoom in & look closely you can see the edges of the steps. I'd have tried going down it in my wheelchair!

Stairs may seem deceptively simple at first. How hard is it to design a set of stairs? Just make a bunch of steps and you’ve got it, right? Not quite. In addition to whatever architectural regulations there may be, there are some basic geometric rules that ought to be followed.

The ideal rise and run for a single normal step is 7” rise and 11” run (~18cm x ~25cm). However, other ratios are possible for other types of steps. There are tons of sites online that break down the rules of stair design, and that’s all before you get into the fancy ideas highlighted in this post.

I am struck by the "Half-A" construction. No attempt to hide the welds / even out the color. The support rods appear to be galvanized water pipe (can't see well enough to be sure.) It is a poor design, poorly executed. As for the why of the stairs - since they go to a skylight I'm thinking maybe a fire exit required by code or something like that. Hopefully not for regular use.

Fortunately, most jurisdictions do have some sort of requirements for stairs, and we suspect that they haven’t been followed in many of these examples. In addition to rise over run requirements, step and stair regulations may determine banister shape and height, step edge shapes, step layout, rotation characteristics for steps that turn, and other factors - all of which can determine how likely it is for a set of steps to cause accidents.

The design itself is treacherous as it is - but to make the steps completely see through? HUH?

Ok, I was surprised to find an entry on this list that had a handrail! On both sides! And proper railings! I forget what this style of stair/ladder hybrid is called, but even with the unfinished wood it's still a well-made example. Definitely not for everyone but miles better than some of the other entries with staggered steps

The slide was unsafe, you would go too fast for the curve, and a child fell off once and got badly hurt. The actual slide part of the slide starts just after the curve, where the man is standing.

Those aren't the stairs you use any more. I don't know what they were thinking but they put a room of some sort where the stairs were and they just left this little piece behind.

someone I visited had a vacation home in the "A" frame cabin architectural mode. They had stairs to get into the loft only slightly wider than this, and without an outer hand rail as well.

Only A Stair In The Loosest Sense, A Clean White Tiled Ordinary-Looking Men's Bathroom Has An Unusual Vertical Access Method

Only A Stair In The Loosest Sense, A Clean White Tiled Ordinary-Looking Men's Bathroom Has An Unusual Vertical Access Method

The first two urials are placed at normal height for your average male genitalia. However, the third pee depositary looms above 2 inches from the ceiling. It's bowl is, almost defiant, orientated towards the ceiling. Truly only a giant whose legs are 90% of his height would be able to take advantage of such a piece of plumbing unaided. What vertical assistance is available to our average man? A staircase perhaps? a ladder? Leading up to the bowl are five red rock climbing hand holds. The lowest is placed at heights that maybe a toddler could access and the tallest one at perhaps at head height. At the urinal no such had holds exist besides the gas heater pipes. What type of mutlilegged creature can access such a waste disposal method boggles the mind. Perhaps the building developers had spiderman as their target market.

I lived in a house like that except only one turn in the stairs. Probably built early(ish) 1900s but not sure. Our farm was homesteaded by the family though. In older houses it was fairly common to have narrow steep stairs to the second floor. I never fell but I can see why building codes went to wider step depth and specified rise and so forth. Also, back then folks didn't have king and queen beds with 1,000 pound memory foam mattresses. They tended to be single (twin) or double (full) beds and also not the rigid box springs you see today.

They were intended to be stairs to the servants quarters. So no one "important" ever used them. And apparently they weren't concerned with the safety of their servants either!

Its an abandoned Indian stepwell ruin. It allowed multiple women in the same village to access the well simultaneously regardless of how much water was in it. It also served as a reservoir to store water during the rainy season for the dry season. Google stepwell to see many amazing designs over 1200 years.

Its a grain silo. There are augers on the opposite side of the building. This stairwell is to access a walkway that runs the length of the building so you can unblock clogs in the tube that dumps the grain. The tube runs the length of the building too so it can evenly dump the grain.

What country? Old design? The grain silos around here (west coast USA) are all round cylinder jobs. Usually conical at top and bottom but basically a 'tube' in between.

Very weird, but looks like this is a retro fitted raised landing. On the landing in the back you can see where the new platform starts. I just cant' imagine what the door to the floor behind the camera looks like though. Unless there is no exit, but the old landing underneath is somehow damaged and new metal stairs put over it.
