They say cats have nine lives. But ginger cats must have at least ninety.

With all the wild, silly, and totally unpredictable things they get up to, it’s a miracle they’ve made it this far. Maybe it’s thanks to the devoted humans who put up with every last shenanigan.

Over on the subreddit One Orange Braincell, owners and orange cat fans alike share all the moments that make these chaotic felines so lovable, from their most unhinged antics to their cuddly, lazy, and downright adorable sides.

Scroll down to see some of the best ginger cats in action—and don’t miss our chat with certified cat behaviorist Shani Campbell on whether their reputation is fact or fiction.

Ah, the famous fiery ginger coat. It’s the stuff of legend—and plenty of debate—when it comes to the personalities of the cats who wear it.

Biologically speaking, the orange hue comes from the aptly named orange gene, which sits on the X chromosome, not the Y.

This gene is responsible for producing phaeomelanin, the pigment that gives orange cats their signature coloring. In these cats, phaeomelanin is expressed instead of eumelanin, the pigment that would otherwise create black or brown coats.

Because the gene is sex-linked, a cat’s chromosomal sex can affect its color.

Cats with one X chromosome, typically males, need only one copy of the gene to become a vibrant shade of pumpkin. Cats with two X chromosomes, typically females, would need two copies of the gene to be fully orange.

If they only carry one, they often end up with a tortoiseshell coat, featuring a mix of colors, including orange.

That’s why female orange cats are significantly rarer than males. Statistically, for every female ginger cat, there are about three males.

But let’s get back to personality.

When people say that orange cat behavior is one of a kind, it’s often said in jest. But is there any truth behind the meme? Some studies have tried to explore whether a cat’s coat color correlates with its personality, and we hate to break it to you, but the results suggest it’s mostly a myth.

“From what we know so far, there’s no clear or conclusive scientific evidence that a cat’s coat color directly determines their personality,” certified cat behaviorist Shani Campbell told Bored Panda.

“While it’s easy to fall into the habit of labeling certain colors as ‘friendlier’ or ‘more sassy,’ these kinds of assumptions can have unintended consequences. When people adopt based on these stereotypes, it can lead to some cats being overlooked in shelters; which ultimately contributes to lower adoption rates and even higher euthanasia rates for certain coat colors,” she said.

Unfortunately, the data backs this up. According to a study published in international peer-reviewed journal Animals, black cats have the highest euthanasia rates and the lowest adoption rates, while white cats enjoy the opposite. Brown, gray, and orange cats tend to fall somewhere in the middle.

As Campbell pointed out, social perception plays a huge role. A recent example is the animated film Flow from Latvia, which featured a quirky black cat as its main character. After the film won an Oscar, its popularity helped boost black cat adoptions, despite long-standing superstitions.

The stories that may be told . . .

For Campbell, the takeaway is clear: we should see cats as individuals, not walking stereotypes.

If a cat is acting “chaotic,” it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re misbehaving, it might just mean their needs aren’t being met, and they’re trying to adapt to an environment that doesn’t support their natural instincts.

Had the epic battle of the kitchen trash can with my black kitty for about 6 months. He’d turn it over every night. Finally weighed it down with a couple of bricks in the bottom. Then he leaned how to open the lid and climb inside. Went through four different types of lids before finding one he couldn’t get open. Then he just started pulling the bag out by the edge folded over the top and shredding it into confetti out of spite. Finally had to buy a cabinet just to house the trash can with doors heavy enough that he couldn’t open them. So far that’s working but I’m pretty sure he’s mapping out his next move!😹😹

I've actually thought about this and realize I'll get to an age where it's better that I don't adopt a young cat. Kinda sad. I will adopt older ones though.

In that sense, helping cats with behavior issues isn’t about traditional “training,” but about providing healthy outlets for their natural behaviors.

“What many people view as ‘problem behaviors’ are often just normal feline behaviors without proper outlets,” Campbell explained.

    He knows where you sleep

So when people assume that getting a cat instead of a dog means less responsibility, they’re in for a surprise. Cats still require proper, attentive care, regardless of personality or coat color.

“For too long, the bar for cat care has been set far too low,” Campbell insisted.

“Cats aren’t low-maintenance pets, they’re intelligent, instinct-driven animals with real needs. Many behavioral issues that land cats in shelters are completely preventable if we meet those needs,” she said.

Campbell’s biggest tip for keeping your cat happy and well-behaved is playtime.

“We have welcomed these fierce predators into our homes and their entire lives are to hunt, eat, groom, sleep. This is their life sequence and how they regulate their physical and emotional bodies,” she noted.

Ideally, you should play with your cat twice a day for 10–20 minutes, followed by a meal or snack.

“Your cat is going to be happier, less anxious, more confident, and more connected to you!” said Campbell.

According to OP: The man fell into a ravine in the icy water of a stream and remained there immobilized. He survived an entire night, at minus 12 degrees Celsius, because he held the animal tightly to his chest. That kept him warm. Although he was in an advanced state of hypothermia when he was found by rescuers, the young man was holding the cat to his chest.

To give additional context - the man survived. He is a Ukraine refugee who was crossing the border into Romania with 2 others when he fell in. The other 2 people were rescued by the helicopter, but he had to be carried out, and his rescue took over 5 hours, but he is safe and was able to keep his kitten, which was his that he brought from Ukraine - so imagine how much this young man and his cat have been through together! Definitely a life long bond.

Then I’ll throw THEM in the dumpster, grab the cats, and leave them to fester in the garbage. I hope it’s extra gross and disgusting in the dumpster that day.
