We might think of parrots as the masters of mimicry but in fact ravens kept in captivity are just as likely to pick up human speech and sounds if not better than parrots. In the wild ravens sometimes are known to imitate other animals or mimic predators so they can attract them to carcasses that they can't break open on their own. If that's not a smart bird, we don't know what is!

This one reminds me an episode of that entertainment/documentary show about animals I catch on TV every now and then. There was a cat who was raised by a hen, then the cat grew up and had her own babies. Guess what the cat did? No, she didn't eat the hen, she left her babies for the hen to take care of, while she is wandering around free, as if she never kids in the first place.
Ostriches may be known for their giant eggs, but little is said about their giant eyes - which are the largest eyes set on any land animal. That's right their eyes are the size of a billiard ball, which is 2in (5cm) in diameter, measured front to back, from the center of the cornea to the retina - five times bigger than the human eye.
Have you ever been eating outside and had your meal ruined by an invasion of ants crawling on your food or even worse on you! Well if you were a cardinal this would be a welcome scenario. This bird species likes to cover their feathers or crushed and living ants. While scientists still aren't sure the reason behind this anting, their best guess is that the birds use the formic acid secreted during this practice to help get rid of lice and other parasites.

Letting out a fart in any circumstance is definitely impolite and embarrassing, but especially at the dinner table. Well, if you want to have a classy dinner don't invite the worm-eating Bassian thrush, they find their prey hiding under leaves by farting directly on them. The gas moves the leaf-litter and dislodges the worms - yum.
Have you ever seen your friend yawn and then tried to turn away before you 'caught the yawn?' Well this behavior of contagious yawning is seen in very few creatures other than humans, such as dogs, chimps and lab rats. Budgerigars, or budgies, a common parakeet, are the only bird species/non-mammal scientists have observed so far that also exhibit this behavior. So if you have a parakeet try not to yawn around them!

This is how I like animals kept, on farms, running free, not in slaughterhouses, crammed up in tiny cages. I like how chickens look like elderly ladies trying to see neighbour's baby.

I was sitting in the hospital duck pond garden and my daughter pointed out an owl sitting on a high ledge. I had never seen a wild owl and I went to take a photo of it but as I was zooming in a pigeon decided to sit on its head. It turns out it was supposed to be a bird deterrent. well it doesn’t work lol.

Reminds me of the time I was at the aquarium and there were a bunch of crocodiles sitting in an outdoor setting while some seagulls were brazenly sitting on them. My dad and I were all impressed until my mother pointed out that the crocodiles were fake. XD!

None of these decoys work for very long. Snakes, hawks, owls, even with built-in response mechanisms like lights, sounds, or flashing eyes, only work until the animals (whose survival depends on being clever every day) figure out that they are no threat. I have found that male urine does repel raccoons though.

Re; something said in the texts. I can make my cat yawn by yawning at him. and vice versa. .... If you are going to keep birds PLEASE keep more than one. Birds live in flocks and family clans, To keep one alone - especially if you work and leave it alone - is cruel.

Very nice! One night I was traveling home from our lower university campus. They had just finished construction on a new science building complete with glass roof. As I walked the path to home, I saw two girls staring and pointing at the building. I said "Who's jumping?" They said "No... there's an owl on the building." Illuminated in the light coming from inside the building stood a huge great horned owl. He looked like he was the king of his territory. As I continued on my travels, I heard bats flying in the direction of the science building. A loud screech from the owl and those bats made a beeline in the opposite direction.

In the 70's my sister found a baby injured magpie. She gave him to my dad who just had a massive heart attack. As they both recovered together they really bonded. Named him Max. He talked but only repeating what my dad said. Dad and I built him a huge aviary. Max would call our dog Shorty to come here then drop food down to the dog. He also would purposely put chicken bones close to the cage edge and when the cats tried to reach in to steal it he would peck them. He was really an intellegent character. Miss him.

Totally random, but my gran is turning 100 this year and every time I see birds, I think of her :) She used to take me to the park (or even sitting outside on her porch) and we'd watch the birds. She knew all their names and could do some bird whistles. She'd feed them seeds that we called song food. I hope someday I have grandkids to take to the park to bird watch - I'd love to be like her <3

My husband works at a apartment complex with pools & the ducks do the same. But PLEASE, if you ever see baby ducks swimming, make sure they can get out. Sometimes it’s harder for them to find a way out or to hop out & they get very tired & can drown

Not really a massive bird person but for some reason me and my partner were obsessed with watching a pair of crows nesting in a tree just down from our flat. We live on the top floor flat (only 4 storeys high) and had a great view of them through the binoculars. We watched them nest and have young 2yrs in a row, but the next year they abandoned the nest after a particularly windy winter and we never saw them again - until this year! They came back this year! So happy about it lol! On a sadder note, there were another pair who nested in another tree down the street from us, and one day the council came along and cut that tree down. No idea what happened to those ones either. So I'm glad that at least one of our pairs have come back. It's amazing just watching them and getting a glimpse of the babies in the nest, seeing them building up their wing strength and finally taking their first flights. My partner even woke me up early one morning to tell me that was the babies out flying lol

(two paragraphs later) we named them and every we celebrate their birthdays inviting the whole neighborhood over and i have a notebook where I've written the exact date and time of every day detailing their every move." :P (I'm only picking with you, not being mean or sarcastic)
