Flight Attendants And Pilots In This Online Group Share 33 Things Passengers Do That Annoy Them
InterviewWhen the time comes to take a flight, we all know the drill: packing, going to the airport, checking in, passing security. Perhaps some enjoy tiny rituals beforehand such as applying the most expensive face serum in duty free, enjoying a cheeky drink to calm the nerves before flying, or trying to do everything to get a window seat. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or only taking plane rides to go on holidays, you might love, hate, or really not mind the whole process. But there are people that make sure that the time that you spend on the plane will be as safe and as comfortable as possible. Flight attendants and pilots repeatedly zooming on numerous flights, sometimes a few times a day or the exhausting long hauls, constantly help and take care of their passengers. But there are things that travelers tend to do that simply get on even the iron nerves of the flight crew, and they decided to share with everyone online.
The AskReddit community, asking and answering tons of questions, this time enquired “Flight Attendants and/or Pilots of Reddit, what are some things passengers do that get on your nerves?“ Some of the answers might surprise you, make you chuckle a bit, and perhaps give you a heads-up on how to become a better passenger on flights.

My wife works at ticket desk for Large Airline. The stories I have....which honestly anyone who’s worked any type of customer service knows what’s up.
My personal favorite. College athlete showed up late to flight, told couldn’t board, yelling, screaming and cursing all employees. Bringing her race up as reason they aren’t letting her on....you know the works. The competition she missed the flight to was Olympic tryouts. How late was she you ask? She showed up two hours after the flight left
Well technically it did regard her race. The race she lost to get to her flight on time.
Bored Panda contacted a purser (cabin chief) who works for a major European airline to find out what aircraft crew’s job is like and how they behave when they travel as guests. The cabin chief is normally flying on the Boeing 737-800 short and medium-haul flights with 4 cabin crew members on board and 2 pilots. “Working on planes taught me how to accept different people and how to make them listen,” they shared. “As a flight attendant, we are at your service primarily when it comes to your safety, and also for your comfort. We take training, tests, courses, simulator trainings, etc. to ensure that you remain safe!” The member of the flight crew also underlined that “hands down, it’s the best job I’ve ever had. It fits me perfectly meeting new people all the time, seeing new places, and taking care of our passengers and crew. Never met better coworkers than the crew in the airline industry.”
Poking or grabbing at me to get my attention!! And it’s usually on my ass as it’s eye level with most people haha. But for real DON’T poke people! Especially if I am speaking to another passenger. I can see you waving at me I’m not going to interrupt my assisting someone else because you want me to take your trash, just give me a second and I’ll come to you next. I promise can hear you if you say “excuse me!” Or “Miss!” Or even wave a little in my direction. There’s just no need to touch people or grab at them.
Once I was so irritated at someone’s incessant poking, I turned, looked them in the eye and poke poke poked them right back and said, “what do you need.”
This is one of the more offensive ones on here, IMO. personal space and boundaries... Don't F#$king touch me,
“When I’m off duty and taking a flight as a passenger, I’m trying to be polite, tidy, and respect the crew personnel duties and the procedures. It’s for sheer safety to not have any personal belongings or loose items on the emergency exit row—so for me it’s easy to understand that I need to comply with the airlines restrictions.” The cabin chief also said that “being a nice passenger is easy. You just have to think about that you are in a public place, where there are other people to consider, both crew and other guests. Smile, and say thank you, that could make someone’s day.” They stressed that if passengers are feeling insecure or unsure about the reasons why certain procedures are carried out, it’s best to just ask and they will gladly explain everything to you.

My worst experiences with customers is when the weather is bad and we have to either wait or make a no go decision. My personal favorite is the guy who screamed at me while I was in the terminal getting coffee because his flight wasn’t leaving on time. The whole north east was shut down for thunderstorms and low ceilings, but his iPhone said it was ok for us to go so he had to tell me how bad I am at my job.
Parents that don't watch their kids during the flight. The aircraft isn't childproof and there's a surprising amount of things they can injure themselves on.
As a teen, I have learned the lesson that you can accidentally injure yourself on anything from a saw to your own leg
Check-in Agent here. When the plane is delayed or there’s a cancellation and passengers blame us! Honestly there’s nothing more we want than getting you on the plane to your holiday or back home but if there’s something physically wrong with the plane we will not risk everyone’s lives. Shouting, screaming and cursing at us won’t change the fact that the plane is still broken!!!!!
When passengers get up as soon as the aircraft stops ... y'all could be sitting effortlessly until we make the bridge and disarm the door but nah
I usually stand up when the airplane stops, because I've been sitting for probably 5 hours and I really need to stretch. I'm under no delusion that I'll be going anywhere, but getting my legs less stiff a relief.
After reading through the other posts I'd like to add that I don't stand up until the seatbelt sign is off (I'm not that much of a jerk lol)
Load More Replies...Once landed in the north of Pakistan on Emirates... quite a lot of people jumped up to get their bags just as the wheels touched the runway. I mean damn, the nose wheel wasn't even on the ground yet. All that the cabin crew could do was just shout as loud as they could that they must all sit down. It was the Facepalm of all Facepalms.
Now with the Corona restrictions you have to sit until the front rows are out of the plane! Last time i traveled there was a couple in the back rows that kept standing up and trying to take down their suitcases and they kept being instructed to sit down!! More than 5 times! Seriously if you are over than 6 years old don't do that!!!!
Once on a flight I'm pretty sure the pilot did a handbrake stop just as the plane neared the airbridge and several people already standing and/or reaching for things out of overhead lockers went flying (no one injured just looked stupid) and quite a few of us still sitting and buckled LAUGHED
"Please remain seated until the plane has reached the gate and has come to a full stop. At no point in history has anyone ever beaten a plane to the gate, so please don't try."
Annoys the hell out of me too, hence why I book a window seat, then I don't get trampled on by the idiot who would be in the window seat racing to get out. I OWN that seat now! Mwwaaaaah. Seriously though, one time the plane was still taxing and the SEAT BELT sign is still on, tons of people reaching up and grabbing bags. Pilot can see the passengers (smaller plane) and says, "I think I need to get up now, been a long flight and all." You have never seen so many heads swivel in one fluid motion as that time. The pilot had pretended to get up and the plane was still taxiing! I must admit I did snort a little snot trying to suppress my laughter.
I just need to stretch. I know I'm not going anywhere. Just leave me be if I'm not endangering you or hurting uou
In Saudi Arabia they start standing up as soon as the airplane LANDS! The flight attendants tell them to sit, but no one listens. The first time I saw that, I was like, they are nuts! In my hometown a few years ago a plane went off the runway as it was taxiing, so I’m not standing up until the door open and everyone in front of me has left.
I know that airline etiquette is supposed to allow the passengers to disembark by rows, but I don't understand why they can't allow the aisle passengers off first, if they already have their carryon, and don't have to get it from the overhead lockers. That would make the disembarkment (is that a word?) go so much quicker, if those standing in the aisles were allowed off first, IMO.
It's about class. First class gets off first at a different gate. And them business/coach class from the usual gate, if they have economy plus, they get off after business/coach, and then the economy class gets off by rows. It's also easier for flight attendants to keep track of the passengers and keeps groups together so they don't litter the halls trying to find one another.

Don’t ask if we were out late last night drinking. You may say it as a joke and think it’s funny but we have to take those comments seriously. There is a chance that comment will force the pilots to go take a breathalyzer and your flight may be delayed or canceled. If you honestly smell booze speak up. If not it’s not funny and keep your mouth shut.
Walking throughout the aircraft barefoot. Especially into the toilets... Those floors are not as clean as you think they are!
If you are nice I am happy to walk the extra mile for you. Having a free seat next to you, a drink i don't have in my cart atm, extra snacks etc. But being an a** for things i can't change won't help anyone. Yes i do see you are flying with an infant and i would love to give you a whole seatrow but the flight is fully booked. You have a certain allergy and can't eat any of the foods offered and have not ordered a special meal before flight? We have only the foods on board which were loaded and i can't create or order any mid-flight.
Parents which let their kids do whatever they want. I almost had to cancel a takeoff once because a toddler was crawling in the isle just because mom said he won't sit still shortly before takeoff. Disregarding that on takeoff roll he could have gotten severly injured. And please bring everything you need for your kids. Diapers, food, milk. We have some items to help you out when you run out but not to supply everything for infants for the entire flight. And tray tables and seats are no changing tables. Gross. Please use the ones in the restrooms.
"And tray tables and seats are no changing tables." I wish I could unread this.
I'd say one of the most irritating and annoying thing is when people ignore or fight our instructions concerning safety regulations. I do not enjoy telling you that you can't have your bag in an exit row, that you need to put your important laptop away for takeoff and landing and that you should stay seated when the seatbeltsign is on. And no it is not negotiable. No reason to get insulting or treat us like shit.
leaving a ridiculous amount of garbage behind. Last week I had a grown ass couple spit huge globs of gum onto the floor and then step on it to try to rub it in. Like seriously? Why? And getting up to use the bathroom when we're already descending.
This isn't related to the post but why is everybody watching the same show in sync? Also, that's disgusting. Just use trash for your gum.
(Military pilot) They always ignore instructions! Just do what I’ve politely asked of you, it’s almost certainly for your own safety!
As a former FA-
Don’t try to join the mile high club. Just, stop.
Don’t have sex in the bathrooms y’all. No, you aren’t being very quiet and yes we will know and depending on the airline policy we’ll also have to politely ask you to knock it off and keep it in your pants.
Not to mention the obvious - airplane lavs are ridiculously tiny, to the point where once on one long haul we had to make an emergency landing because a large couple couldn’t get out of the lav they had shoved themselves into once they were done.
I’ll add that this is THE grossest place to possibly want to do the deed, as lavs NEVER GET DEEP-CLEANED, EVER (between same-day legs)
Ugh, and please don’t jerk your partner off while you’re both in your seats, with OUR COMPLEMENTARY BLANKET(!!!).
I know what your hand motions mean and I will have to come over and shut it down, especially because in most cases there are families with kids sitting behind or near you.
You are a guest on bord. A very valued guest. But please behave as such. You have passenger bins and your seat area. Don't open other cabinets or lockers. Don't help yourself to anything which isn't obviously on display for you. And if in doubt ask first. We had passengers eating the homemade lunch of a colleague in tupperware. Someone took a bite from a piece of cheese which my colleague already had a bite from and placed it back, etc
Stop expecting free alcohol because you handed me a three dollar bag of candy you bought in the airport. I’m a grown a** man. You didn’t make my day by giving me a Hershey’s kiss. Slip me a twenty instead. I’ll give you an open bar the rest of the flight.
Wait, what? You can bribe somebody to give you free alcohol on a plane? I thought it's either free, or it isn't - in which case it's like $5, so you would need to have 4 drinks just to make up for the $20 you spent on the bribe.
Poor hygiene/inappropriately dressed/exposed feet/etc. Aside from being disgusting, you should always “dress to egress” as we are taught in pilot training. Good luck making your way through a burning airplane, down a slide, and wading through leaking fuel and hydraulic fluid in your crocs, basketball shorts and Hawaiian t-shirt. Stick to close-toed shoes to protect your feet, and non-synthetic clothing that at least covers your legs completely. Synthetic material melts when heated; non-synthetic will just burn. Your skin hates both, but will prefer the latter.
Completely agree on the hygine/proprietary thing, but I will not choose my clothes based on the "burning plane evacuation" scenario.
People who talk to us and treat us like scum. And yes, we'll provide better service to the ones who are nice, or think of them first when a whole row is free and they need to lie down and sleep during an 11hr flight.
Pilot here.
Not an annoyance but I do love the look on peoples faces when I tell them “sorry I don’t know where the nearest X is, this is my first time at this airport”. We don’t pre plan and memorize the layouts of the terminals at every airport in the world.
Pilots know MUCH more about the exterior of the terminals than they do the interior.
Complaining about how rough the flight was. I've had some cuss out the flight deck about their abilities because the aircraft hit wake turbulence... If you can magically see wake turbulence on a tiny monitor and think you can do a better job then join a flight acadamy, pay several thousand dollars for the training and certification and do it yourself...
Feet in the isles during night flights. The cabin lights are dimmed and i do understand your need for stretching your legs but it is a trip hazard for us. There have been colleagues which broke bones for tripping over feet and legs in the dark.
Getting really drunk or high before a flight. You will almost certainly be caught and arrested. Dodge the federal charges and just wait until we land. Edit for clarification - If drunk passengers weren’t allowed to fly, I don’t think a single flight would leave the gate. I was mostly referring to the absolutely blitzed folks who could become a safety hazard.
Standing up when the seatbelt sign is on. On the ground, we’ll most likely be bringing the airplane to a stop, which inconveniences not just everyone else on board, but the 10 airplanes behind us. Plus ATC starts yelling at us. Not fun. In the air, if that sign is on, it’s for a reason. If we fly into turbulence and you get injured because your belt wasn’t fastened, we might have to divert, which makes everyone’s day exponentially more shitty.
Speaking of which, assuming the galley is a free for all. Sometimes we don't get provided crew food for work and bring our own. If we're busy attending to a call bell and can't finish out snack or whatever... Its not for you to just grab and eat... At least ask first!
Asking if I can upgrade them to first class. Even though I’m just the pilot, I’ve been approached by all kinds of passengers and heard almost every story/lie in the book. None of it will work and it’s just an uncomfortable situation to be put in.
okay, this is stupid. People are approaching the freaking pilot about seats? Why?
Drunken behaviour. When you start getting aggressive for not getting anymore booze, we know it's the right call. It is neither fun for us or the people sitting in you vicinity. From harrasment, cussing, aggressive behaviour, throwing up or loud terrible singing/howling on a long haul night flight. Same for medications taken with alcohol.
Passengers who do aircraft yoga during the service. By all means if lights are off and it's quiet go ahead, but if there's a buzz of activity near the galley then maybe wait a while.
Act like it’s a restaurant and you’re the only costumer in it. If you don’t get your choice of meal, just take whatever is available, meals are loaded by a specific percentage. If your seat is at the row where the food cart will finish, then there s a chance you won’t get your choice of meal
What is you are literally the only "costumer" on the plane? Do you get preferential treatment for your fabulous gowns?
Stopping me in the terminal to ask for information about your flight. I do not possess universal knowledge of every single flight for every single airline. Direct your attention to the departure boards, or just Google your flight number.
I do get this, but if your lost or confused, most people will ask someone who works there
The bar carts are heavy and the airplane has basically always an incline angle. Please move out of the way and go use the restroom before we are blocking your way.
Serious question, what is the best possible way to anticipate that? if you wait until you see a cart, it'll block the way on your way back from teh restroom.
Arguing with/disobeying flight attendants. They are there for a reason, and it’s primarily for your safety. You will always lose a pissing match against them. Just swallow your pride and cooperate. Bring them chocolates and snacks and thank them for their hard work, and they just might hook you up with free liquor and a better seat.
And yes i cringe seeing ppl run around barefoot especially near/in restrooms. I sometimes can't understand what happened in there but its gross. And well i bet in almost every aircraft are restrooms where someone couldn't make it to it in time and vomitted right in front of it.
Asking me where a gate/restaurant/etc. is located in the terminal. Most airports have signs overhead that are more than adequate. And unless it’s my home base, I’m probably not as familiar with the airport as you think.
I think the people that are asking that question are not frequent flyers (and it could even be their first time), so just tell them what you said here "the gate numbers are hanging from the ceiling and there's kiosks with a terminal map so you can find your restaurant". I almost said "You can download the terminal map on your phone", but the people that aren't sure how to navigate an airport probably don't know where to find online terminal maps.
Basically people that act like spoilt babies are annoying in any customer service related job! I work in hotels and i absolutely HATE IT!
Not a pilot or FA here but for about 6 years I traveled extensively for work and one of the things NOT mentioned here that used to be quite annoying to me when traveling: people who bring overly stinky food from the airport or even their home onto the metal tube with little ventilation we were going to be stuck in for hours. Several times I was seated nearby someone who thought it appropriate to bring something fermented or fish or hardboiled eggs or cabbage/cauliflower (we all know they smell like farts!)... like just DON'T. Maybe eat those before boarding or if you can't eat before boarding then just bring something inoffensive we don't have to spend the next couple of hours smelling.
This should also be a rule for airplane food. I feel sick whenever they serve fish, it's so pungent, and everywhere
Load More Replies...I've worked for the airlines before, both at the airport and in reservations, and some people shouldn't be allowed in public, let alone in a plane. They need to equip planes with trapdoors under seats for unruly passengers to get dropped into cargo for the duration of the flight. Upon landing, they should be arrested and placed on a no fly list, with the duration dependent on how much of an asshole they were.
Ha ha. I read your comment in a hurry, and at first I thought you wrote "dropped into the Congo"! Oh, they're flying over Africa? (You are much more gracious than I, only wanting to drop them into the cargo hold!)
Load More Replies...I'm amazed people act like this. Just be decent to others... It's not difficult! My husband and I flew back home early from our honeymoon because my dad had died. It was tricky to change our return flight because of the number of liars out there and it was only because I was sobbing incoherently down the phone that we were able to do so. The staff on the flight were so kind when we explained what had happened and made sure we had everything we needed. Just stop lying and being nasty, not only is it wrong but when people need help they won't get it.
Ally, I'm so sorry to hear that your Dad passed away, but I'm really glad that he was at your wedding. Bittersweet for you, looking at the photos and video.
Load More Replies...Be nice to the check in staff. They are the people who can recommend you for upgrade, or swap your seat to right beside the loo.
That is true, but I would recommend: Just be nice to people.
Load More Replies...One of them said "bringing me Hershey kisses will not get you free booze". Another said "bring chocolate. it could get you free booze".
I was on a plane at SeaTac Airport and we had a passenger that had to be dragged off in cuffs because he thought he could sit in first class with a coach ticket if the seat was unoccupied. He became nasty when the flight attendant made him sit in his assigned seat. After he was removed from the aircraft, people descended on the check in desk demanding upgrades and compensation. We were only delayed about 90 minutes. People need to grow up and stop acting so entitled.
I hate entitled people! Nobody ows you anything!
Load More Replies...Ok, I don't have the means to do it, so just throw it out here if any entrepreneur wants to develop this and make money: Passenger Ejecting Seats. But not like in combat aircafts. Mine are democratic ones: if 51% of the passengers press the seat number + Eject Button, that seat pufffff! just goes with the wind.
How many planes have YOU landed safely? It’s a hard-ass job, and y’all made it there safely. Damn skippy I’m clapping!
Load More Replies...TL:DR: Be nice, listen, treat people with respect, think of how your actions affect others, CARE about those effects. Kindergarten rules people!
It goes both ways. When I'm on a long night flight I don't want to hear the FA's going on about how smashed they got at the weekend. You're behind a curtain, we can hear you.
Good to know. Luckily I've never encountered anybody who's done this (to my knowledge). Hopefully I never will :>
I honestly had no idea that was a thing. Is it a worldwide thing?
Load More Replies...I’ve worked in customer service/service industry for almost 30 years. I hate that some people think we want to screw with the customer or want them to have a bad experience, when nothing could be further from the truth. We want to help them as best we can as when they do have a bad experience it can affect the image of the business which can cause their stocks to go down, etc, which then affects how many hours we get and whether we get raises or a bonus. Sadly, sometimes their is nothing we can do and none of us makes the rules that the business abides by. We get the frustration as we are all customers as well and have dealt with the same frustrations. Patience and understanding goes a long way, and considering the state of the world right now, we need lots of it.
I really miss travelling and flying. It has been 15 months now, but the stories here reminded me of the annoying aspects of travelling. Thanks for that!
