Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Ms (which has nothing to do with being widowed) should be the norm. It was created to do away with the married or single distinction. Miss and Mrs should go the way of Goodwife and Mistress (the abbreviation of which is Mrs, and no, not that kind of mistress), both of which are positively stuck in the Middle Ages.

Just wait until the glorious moment when someone cries out on a plane or in a crowded theatre: "Is anyone here a doctor?" And you can modestly say "Why, yes, I am!" And they'll probably say something about someone's health or something, but just concentrate on looking wise and noble.

One day you must wake up and realize the fundamental flaws you have created. It is amazing to see that in a country that holdes freedom as their highest value, you have the the least freedom for yourself. Paying for school makes you dependent on your parents. Paying high price for healthcare makes you dependent on your employer or even worse your husband! The believe in your capitalistic system only favors the 10% richest, and leaves the rest outside in the cold. Calling women by Miss, Mrs og Ms. is actively surpressing women. No other industralized, western country disregards their women like the United States, the home of the brave and the "free".

Given that it's absolutely, 100%, totally necessary to share the marital status of women (Missus, miss, mizz) I've decided that the same is necessary for men. And so, men shall henceforth be addressed as either; Mister (Happily married), Mistee (Single), mizzer (Dating), meezdeez (Engaged), Mississippi (Currently in the process of getting divorced), meepmeep (Unhappily married), moomomoomomoomo (In an open relationship) monstermash (Unable to commit to a relationships because they're hopelessly in love with Emily from Corpse Bride.)

Ms = Mrs or Miss. "Ms" is supposed to replace the use of both "Mrs" and "Miss" to not refer to a woman's marital status.

I think these will all be irrelevant soon anyway with the rise of the gender pronoun. Just pick your own.

Just FYI Ms. doesn't mean widowed. It means a grown woman who isn't married. Facts

Mrs. and/or Ms. can be single or married, or widowed for that matter. Means nothing.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.

To the know it all who made a comment about nurse’s salaries, I use to work in collections for auto loans. A lot of nurses defaulted on their payments. I know this might come as a surprise but people, nurses have other bills to pay, many have children, and many are single mothers. Just because someone is a nurse doesn’t automatically equal wealthy.

How come it's always single mom and that is seen as a bad thing. If ever there is a single dad he's sung like a hero. Unless he goes with his baby girl to the ladies toilet to change the diaper (because the changing tables are if at all only in the ladies toilet), then he's a pervert.

Or we could try using the same terms for males as for females. So a guy who sleeps around is a s**t etc. It's not something I exactly approve of, but I think it wouldn't take long to get the point across to at least some more people

Think of it as a standup comedian trying out material on the road. What gets a laugh stays, what doesn’t gets dropped from the comedy routine. I doubt that comedians get all that defensive if they have to abandon a joke.

I think girls are also trained early to like being objectified. If you see girl magazines there's nothing with STEM or brilliance of the mind, always with how does your hair look or if this dress makes me fat. Baby outfits are already with sexual innuendos - watch out boys for this cutie etc.

I find the amount of pro-rape propaganda constantly coming from conservatives to be terrifying. That there's a whole huge segment of society who seems to be doing everything they can to be allowed to rape without consequence.

This. F*****g terrifying. (The book terrified me when I was Handmaid age. As I got older and knew I’d be sent to the colonies, either for being past childbearing age or for being a very outspoken anti-Gilead activist, I was almost relieved. At least the women in the colonies have some freedom to be themselves. However, I never ever want to see us even think of pursuing that kind of path. Ever.)
